    I'd suggest either triangulating the open area to the shock mount, and or gusseting the open area you are leaving a lot of area for flex under load
    Edit: also be careful of that new shock mount location you may run into some binding issues

    • @baloneyjusticecheezedog
      @baloneyjusticecheezedog Před 4 lety +12

      I am kinda worried with how long and thin they are they are going twist or bend around the shock mounting point... if you can bend it with a leaver just using your body.. what do you think driving around in a car is going to do.. there alot of force being exerted on the suspension and it has to be just as strong if not stronger then the frame of the car. It's that the control arm is big boxy shape that has good triangulation it. The material that is comprised of is just as weak as anything you can bend into shape.. but because the structure is so big with sections of material that turns into tension sections when you try to twist it... It can easily resist bending..
      (Edit..) I'm not sure, I just look at and say it's wrong because it designed with no consideration to compression forces outside of the fact they used a vary expensive steel bar...But... as a tension device its far above par for what it looks to be its intended purpose. So its really hard to tell because I'm not sure if the lower control arm is meant to be a tension or compression part in the lower suspension. I have seen designs for front suspension where the upper control arm is designed mostly to resist tension forces.. but then there the strut and lower control arm to act heavily as compression points to keep the wheel extended to where it should be.. It going to come down to if the part is ever put into a compression situation just how much force does it need to withstand, and is the other components of the system able to take those forces first. (end edit)
      It will be interesting to see how much brutality these control arms can withstand.. and hope he does a bit of spirited driving to test how how good his work is before he takes it out on somewhere where its hard to recover from. (Edit) Another good thought that came to me is he can use the old control arms to watch and see how durable the new control arms are.. He can just hold them up under them and see if there is any movement that deviates things from stock.

    • @purplegravy
      @purplegravy Před 4 lety +7

    Hey Gingium, i really like the fabricating. When performing structural optimization i learned that in general a design that uses triangles (45°) is better than a design that uses simple rectangular connections to add rigidity. Of course this is a very general simplification of a complex topic, but you can see that in steel bridges i.e. ... May be this helps you! Greetings from germany

    @calebshonk5838 Před 4 lety

    I used to at ZF, we designed and manufactured the control arms for many Mazdas, including the Miata. I would strongly advise against messing around with the control arms. There's a lot of geometry that goes into the engineering of them and if the alignment is off at any one point (if memory serves, there are 42 measured spatial points on each FLCA), it can cause cascading failure to the suspension system. (Or at the very least, increased wear in your drivetrain).
    The problem with extending your FLCAs (front-lower control arms) like this is that it throws everything else out of whack as well. Your FUCAs are now too short, your sway bars are misaligned, and your struts and tie rods are articulating at angles they weren't designed for. This can cause warping or binding in your driveline and suspension components (both front and rear, even if it is unmodified), as well vibrations and abnormal wear that is difficult to diagnose.

    You have to wait to tighten the control arm bolts till the suspension is loaded, aka on the ground, so the bushings don't bind into the flexed out position. I know on the inside you have heims, but the outers are regular bushings, and you don't want to tighten those with the vehicle on the hoist like that
