Today we take a look at the first album released by the Mars Volta, one of the greatest Prog Rock bands ever!
Much of this video is my own, but credit where it's due for some of the research and interpretations:

FAVORITE TRACKS: Inertiatic ESP, Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of), Drunkship of Lanterns, Eriatarka, Cicatriz ESP, Televators, Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed - Hudba
-De-loused lyrics were written about Julio Venegas, not Jeremy Ward, though Jeremy happened to have passed away right before the release of De-loused from an overdose. Frances The Mute was heavily based off Jeremy Ward and the protagonist in the diary he found as working as a reporter man, as they eerily had a lot in common with him.
-The most likely reason Son et Lumiere was split from Inertiatic ESP was because the industry standard for EP vs LP albums and how they pay out is by the number of songs, and if there were only 9 songs, I think the label would have paid out as an EP. Same thing happened on Frances The Mute, hence why Cassandra Gemini is split into 8 songs instead of 1.
I always thought of rowing sheep smiles as the swirl water makes because of the oars while rowing. Tracing it would look like a sheep's smile.
I appreciate the clarification. I got the two albums backgrounds confused 😭
@@Theybo2 You really need to fact check yourself more, this is a very consistent issue.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis i will not deny this
i think son et lumiere and tira me a las aranas was a stylistic choice, deloused has quite alot of tracks without them. also you couldnt have known when you wrote this but it recently came out that the frances diary story isnt real and its just based on a movie plot that omar and jeremy had
Also, ESP in the context of this album means "Ectopic Shapeshifting Penance-propulsion"
My son did a report at school about a musician/band he loves
He picked The Mars Volta
I'm a proud papa
Deloused was the first Volta album i heard, it entirely changed my taste in music and remains one of my favourite albums to this day!
When I first discovered this album I became so obsessed with it that I would go to bed at night thinking about it. Even to this day, I could listen to it everyday and it still have the same impact. My relationship to this album is concerning, but wonderful.
I still listen to it every day
The album is a big, almost unfinished Pluto transit. It's horrifying yet beautiful. Not enough words to describe such an experience.
The dogs Cerebus, Hades dogs
I’m not sure if anyone actually knew this or not, but Flea played bass on Deloused in the Comatorium.
He was on Francis the Mute as well
@@nightshiftreports3866he plays the bass and the trumpet
@@soksantan26 Trumpet?! I didn't even know Flea knew how to play Trumpet
@nightshiftreports3866 yup. You should check it out. He is good. On Frances the Mute, he plays on the track Miranda
pretty sure John recorded some guitar parts as well
This is one of my all time favorite albums. Especially when paired with the story
I interpret the cover as being symbolic to Cerpin being in the coma, inside the hospital, and with all the surgical tools around the head could symbolize the deconstruction and examination of what was happening to him in his journey. Cedric in the back is symbolic to real life Cedric, Omar and Julio's other friends, who were worried and afflicted by his situation, while still being only the background of the story.
Its almost like the anxiety of being in a prog band carries over to the listener at times.
One thing I have said about the new album is that it doesn't require the need for me to add any disclaimers or extra context.
Albums 1-4 are challenging to talk about. Octahedron and Noctourniquet are rather straight forward.
Listening to this takes me back to when I first heard this album and how it blew me away and The Mars Volta became my favorite band. I've learned alot from your dive into the story. It is sadder than I knew, but I do feel a lot of the band 's strength comes from their ability to communicate surreal emotions and experiences...audio landscapes similar to Dali paintings. I'm SO excited they are back together!
Great job on this analysis. This album is something special and even almost 20 years later, it's still one of my favorites.
i still made a few mistakes that i have to elaborate on in the upcoming FtM review
The ecto-mimed bison i believe is supossed to be the truck that hit Cerpin when he fell off the bridge at the end, great video man! I love this
band and specially this album, great work, one of the best conceptual albums I've ever listened to. Cheers from mexico!
Cool, thanks!
GREAT video! I love how much research you put into this project and how streamlined all of it was. Excellent work my friend. Super excited to move on to your Frances the Mute analysis etc.
Thank you very much!
I can't believe I watched this whole thing. But thank you for giving context to an album that I've loved since it first came out. I never took the time to sit down and parse together the story. The wordplay was too much for my teenage brain to handle at the time, but now as an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for them. Thank you.
Thank you for this. This is my favorite album as well.
This album changed my life and will never get old. FTM is their masterpiece, but Deloused ...wow. At the time they were fastly becoming one of the best bands in music, like no one else. Saw them in 2005 and bonnaroo, they played take the veil scab dates, the place went nuts. Still to this day that show was one of the best I've seen. That was their best lineup imo. Jon Theodore was perfect for or them, he didn't overdo it. Ironic that pain makes for such good art in life.
Agree with most of this, but I disagree with the final sentence. They did put their pain to good use, yes, but a lot of it was just their talent as musicians. They were and honestly still are fantastic artists DESPITE their pain and traumas.
This story is what actually made me get into the mars volta. I had only heard that they were great but when i heard of this type of concept album (not positive that its considered a concept album), i was hooked.
Love your interpretation, I’m a bit new to the Mars Volta, I’ve nearly finished their discography and I already love their work to bits, got Frances the mute physically recently too.
Loved your bungle and everything everything vids too, keep up the solid work 💜
You can expect quite a few more music based videos! Namely System of a Down, My Chemical Romance and Dillinger Escape Plan
Peak fiction! That's one way to describe some of the moments from Frances!
I had my doubts starting the video, I thought it would be a documentary...
But your passion won me over! Even if it's speculation, it holds value!
I think my frances video is better tbh. This one has a little bit of misinformation. But I'm glad you enjoyed regardless!
Awesome video! Is the Francis the Mute video still coming?
its already out bro
The dedicated this song to their friends Julio Venegas who went into a coma after injecting himself with rat poison and morphine. He was in a coma for 7 days and after waking up he ended up jumping off of a bridge onto a freeway…
Yep. It is extremely sad.
@@Theybo2 Julio was very very talented artistically with painting, song writing, etc. Once he woke up and found the world bleak, after three years of trying to adapt he couldn’t take it anymore…
This whole channel is dope and I’m gonna watch all of it. Hope you get some love on the algo
The words you said regarding Tira Me a Las Aranas had me wanting to commit a Cerpin Taxt
Banger
The real tragedy is how people don’t think that it’s the best Mars Volta album! Do you people know how revolutionary this stuff was in 2003!?!?
i slightly prefer frances but yes it is easily a 10/10
revolutionary? yes. However, Amputechture is pure TMV.
frances was better
The Bedlam In Goliath
Yes, I do know.
what's up with zack de la rocha ? lol I saw the mars volta in sf 2004 or 2003 live delouse released party in SF met the whole band backstage talk to Cedric in spanish , he happened to be born in the same city I was living at that time in the bay area Ca in the hospital we all knew he was cool af super nice.
The clip is from zach announcing the mars volta at an award show I believe
Super informative video but til 12 minutes in when you didn't acknowledge this album was inspired by the life and death of Julio venegas, not Jeremy ward.
thats because i address it in the frances the mute video i did, not this one.
One video on frances the mute will be so amazing
I already made one
You get some things incorrect and make some weird assumptions. That said, if you consider the theme of the story, why do you think the language might be so confusing and cryptic?
No i totally own up to the misinformation trust me. I've corrected it in my frances vid.
I didn't want to rely solely on the short story he made primarily bc i wanted to make this analysis my own original interpretations based on the album itself.
I've made some people mad with that, and that's fine. This video is not my favorite that I've made and it's far from my best. It just happened to get popular.
I don't know music theory, I'm not super familiar with musical structure. Im not an expert. Just a dude who really wanted to talk about how cool a band is, and got a bit sidetracked here and there.
As for his lyrics, they're cryptic cause that's just his style. To be honest, trying to figure out what he meant was fun. That's partly why i Made this video in the first place.
Please please make a video on atdi
I fully intend to but I've got too much going on atm.
That being said, i did just start a patreon where you can request videos, and in that case id drop everything to do it asap.
welcome to yappervile
Aw man now i have to delete the video because I got totally owned by full name bunchofnumbers !! Its officially joever 😔🤙
That’s Zack De La Rocha.
I feel like the reviewing of the songs isn't necessary. I mostly came for the story, which is in the title
I mean that's a fair criticism. I still felt the sound was worth going in depth for, though. This video was made with the intention of gushing.
@@Theybo2 Fair enough. I just thought you would have made a separate video for the criticism of the album.
de facto is awesome
I hated At the Drive in
Me when I'm wrong
where is the venus volta
They popped into fracticles in the atmosphere
They went to jupiter to get more stupider
at-the-drive-in is emo.....??? wtf
uh...yeah. it is.
Is atdi emo?
Yes
Is Cerpin Taxt a man or a woman because you refer to Cerpin as both?
I believe that before Cerpin trips, he is a man. But during the trip, at a certain point in the story, Cerpin is changed to a woman.
Maybe the implication is that Cerpin is having an identity crisis, not really sure.
@@Theybo2 heroin and rat poison is a hell of drug lol
Dude stop it. This is some phony ass remarks.
I mean this video isn't my favorite that I've made but I think "phony" is putting it a bit harshly. I'm just an amateur video essayist. Doesn't mean my enjoyment for this band isn't any less legitimate. So I find your offense puzzling.
