How to Stop Being Scared, and Freakin' Send it!

- Fear can be a real limiting factor, especially when you're fresh off an injury with no confidence. Mountain biking can be scary when you're unsure of your abilities! I only started walking on my own in February, and now I'm ready to hit the line we built last year. It's technical, challenging, and pretty high risk. Today I'll show you how I work through the mental challenges required to safely attempt these mountain bike features.

Nobody is acnowlaging Kevin getting engaged, Congrats my man
Heâs on payroll now what did you expect đ€Ł
Wow didn't knew it hope Seth gives him holidays đ
Thanks man. Iâm stoked.
Congrats man!
@@SteadySpin I sent you something on Instagram but Iâll say it again congrats Kevin
âIm gonna help you guys regain your confidence tooâ
Pulls out a huge airbag jump
Lol
ah yes lemme get mine out of my garage and ill put it in my huge front garden on my private trails that all definitely exist
Right??
It's a good video, but yeah a bit misleading
Airbags are kinda freaky. Last year I broke my wrist bouncing off the side of an airbag
Seth is like âdonât do it cuz your friend says send itâ
Me: remembers Super Dave on the snake pit skinny when Kevin said âjust bunny hop itâ
Haha
What happened?
Seth: Wants to warm up on a 9ft gap jump
Me: Scared to do a 2ft table
me too
Just send it! Jk im also trying to get prepared for a drop
The feels.
Why so scared?
I feel that I decided to make a pump track in my yard so I can practice but still be at my home
6:18 I totally forgot about the berm peak iron brand until I saw it on the edge of the pucker pad. Itâd be cool to see a small detail like that throughout berm park as well.
Man thats some good eyes you have!
Hey Seth, I just wanted to say that your videos have really helped me while I've been off the bike. Last year, the doctors found a bone tumor in my calcaneus (heel bone) which left me unable to walk. After getting it scraped out and filled in with bone graft I'm currently 6 weeks into a 9 month recovery.
Thankfully, the pathology report came back as non-cancerous, and your video's have given me hope/motivation to never give up on my ultimate goal of getting back on the bike again. I've got a long road ahead and I've been rooting for you every step of the way! Thank you.
Best wishes for your recovery. Less serious but kind of funny now, an uncle fell off a ladder pruning up the cherry trees. Shattered his heel, but was okay otherwise because he had a protective helmet and good shoes on (helped stabilize the shattered pieces of bone). Trouble was he was by himself on a long hill away from the access road. He dragged himself out and drove to the hospital. Did I mention his truck was a manual?
The nurses called him Rambo when he came in. This was the days before cellphones. After that though, we set up walkie talkie protocols for everyone.
@@katydid5088 what an absolute champion! The pain from heel surgery is no joke
Good luck on your recovery stay strong
@@ianhermansson7191 Thanks Ian!
Its been more than 9 months Bobby, since you posted this. Are you back to riding? I hope so. Take it easy getting back into things.
âJust because your friend says Send it is not a reason to do itâ. Words of wisdom.
This and "Just one more run" often leads to disaster
Ain't nothing like some ill-informed peer pressure.
is kevin available to be a "facetime hypeman"
Did anyone see he actually used that 3D printed chinmount for his go-pro...
So you don't need a gimbal for that? Damn
@@edgarcastillo7005 your head kinda is the gimbal
@@cameron-w its kinda awesome tho but i remembered the go pro has a stabilization built in it too
@@edgarcastillo7005 that too. Though that only corrects pitch and yaw while a gimbal corrects even more. Thatâs why the head kinda acts as a bigger gimbal. But youâre right cause a lot of newer GoPros have insanely good stabilization.
This is what I exactly need to regain my condifidence.
Breaks ankle badly, first time getting big stuff âIâm riding my hard tailâ
Great job Seth. Congratulations Kevin. I have a friend like Kevin that I have known for close to 40 years and I learned early on that it wasnât always the best thing to listen to his tidbits of wisdom, probably why I am still alive now. However, I also wouldnât have done so many different things if it wasnât for his encouragement. Thanks for the video.
I wish I had a friend like Kevin when I was coming back from my injury. The only voices in my ear were those of the reckless and those of the faithless. It took me a good long while to find my groove with no real friends to help me gain my confidence back.
woah, we're in the same boat, I'm scared to ride again after my ankle injury as well
I am having tomorrow my last check up (hopefully) after a bad crash and two fractured vertabrae, not sure how long it will be before I get my confidence back. It will be a long process. Congrats, Seth!
@@levskitoronto holy sh*t, that must've been really really really bad, oh God I can't imagine breaking vertebraes.
Wish the best for you.
Had my first big crash at Amelia Earhart Park about 7 years ago. Before that, I used to do 3 laps at Amelia and drive to VK and do 4 laps at least 4-5 times a week. Took 8 months to rehab and got back on the trails. Road Amelia at my race pace and made it past the turn, only to take a spill on the very next turn after. Took all my confidence away, didn't ride for years. I am now finally back to riding 4-5 times a week, but this time building up to it slowly. Doing on average 4 miles a day, trying to regain my confidence to attack features and build up my speed again. Glad I found your channel recently, as it's really helping me get back into the grind.
liking some of those camera shots while going down the trail!
I broke my foot last year riding, re gaining my confidence back on the bike took me a long time.. But now I'm back riding better then before the injury ! all I say to people going through similar things is trust the process, your Drs and believe in yourself. you got this :)
The first edition of this video was very helpful to me and my friends! I am so glad there is an updated take on fear from Seth!
Thanks!
I just got back from an injury and what helped for me was table tops and you gradually increase your speed until you can clear, repeat several times then do jumps like step ups then you can get back into gaps and stuff. Hope this is helpful đ€
what if you just can't clear tabletops even going really fast cos your jumping is terrible and you have nobodoy to help you or train you or show you how to do it? Some of the jumps i'm trying i can go fast and BUNNY HOP further than the jump yet i can't clear the landing.
Good job guys! That helped a lot of us here for sure! Kevin! Congrats on the engagement buddy!
This is the video that I needed the most!
I so badly wish I had A life like Seth's Always doing some thing mtb related or at least most of the time.
Dude,
DO IT
Just do it

I appreciate you acknowledging that confidence doesn't come from nowhere. I'm new to mountain biking and while I try to hit everything with confidence, I agree it is important to build that confidence through being prepared. I maintain that line of thinking through all my riding and its given me the chance to ride some stuff I never would have without the proper preparation.
I loved this episode since literally one of the things I like the most about MTBing is the constant fear LOL ⊠thank you!
Kevin! The best sidekick everyone can have! Congrats Kevin!
Also, great video Seth. I did a similar injury in October 2019 and it was a long recovery. I think what helped me build confidence was having support to get back on the bike. I've had a lot of injuries, so support has been the biggest booster for me.
Me who did send it on a big gap and is now watching this from my bed with my broken shoulder:
đđđ
Every time I end up sending something I get injured sitting in bed with broken wrist and broken shoulder
Yikes! Sorry dude. Hope you heal up quick!
I appreciate this video. It really helped me to conquer taking some sketchy drops. It gave me the confidence to not get into my head and having fear overtake me. Thank you Seth.
Congrats Kevin! And thank you Seth for this vid. As someone who is relearning after years of not riding, this helps a lot
Congrats Kevin!
It's funny how Fear is good in some instances, but detrimental in others.
I had a friend tell me "Trust me, I'll tow you in" guess who fell and bruised their hip? Hyping you up is great! Telling you to trust them isnt...
Good for you I amIâm glad youâre conquering your fear and overcoming your injury
Congrats and thanks to you both, and your team in the back
Exactly what I need right now! Legendđ€
Just had a gnarly otb crash and sort of need this
OTB's are tough. Had plenty of those over the years. Best remedy is to learn what we did wrong and get back on.
YES SETH! So excited for you and so stoked to see you getting back on it more!!!
Thank you for the help!! You guys rock! Congrats Kevin
"Don't call it a comeback...!" đ€
We love you, man.
"Don't do something just because your friends tell you to."
Does it (and nails it) anyway haha
I sent some jumps and drops yesterday. All this advice is really valuable. This may not work for everyone but most of the time I just go for it! (usually thatâs not a good idea)Thanks Seth!
The feeling after you do something that scares you is the best. Yesterday I jumped the biggest double i've ever jumped and the feeling afterwards is so awsome!
When my mate was getting married, I thought it a good idea to take him climbing .. next day he was on Crutches..đđ then a week later I broke my heal. The bride wasnât best pleased
yes i finally became one of the first to watch
Lol
Itâs truly a wonderful moment
True
Love watching you guys ride!!! Seth , your flow is still uncomprapable ...good to see you on wheels again man!!! Can't wait to come hit the new park in NC once I rebuild my diamond back.
Coming back from knee injuries recently I have been slowly building up my confidence again! Good video!
Dang this came out right before I go into Pisgah for three weeks of backpacking.
Coincidence both good and bad, cause I'm nearby but won't have my phone...
Can we get a Cooking with Seth Part 2?
That would be great like some trail food
Yes
I injured my tailbone bad when i stuffed up trying to learn wheelies. I faced my fear today and learned how to properly set one up and dismount correctly before even watching this video, but this still helped tonnes. Thanks
I finally got out on my first mountain bike ride the other day and it was AWESOME! Thank you for inspiring me to get out and ride!
Hi
hello
You were first!
"I suck at right turns." I thought this was interesting, because I suck at right turns, too. Out of curiosity, Seth, are you left handed?
It has nothing to do with your handedness. He is right foot forward which makes turning left easier.
Same I am right footed and turning right is just awkward
Motor racing and criterium bike racing I never had a problem with left or right turns. My dad had problems with right turns. At least itâs not genetic. I am fairly ambidextrous.
good to see that youre getting back at it. congrats to Kevin. i love how your pup steals the episode at the end
Yes itâs so cool to see you start riding your trails
Seth needs to look up the definition of "live, in real time."
Listen. He's alive. Time is real. What more do you want?
I'm more scared of my parents whooping my ass when I break my bike đđ
Great video my man. You are a clear thinker and you will always make a good decision. Hopped right back on that bronco.
Congrats Kev, stay stoked!!
Kevin on biking with Bobo: đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»
Kevin on Sethâs channel: đ
Kevin: how to stop being *what* ?
What's fear?
Perfect capture of the emotions we have to when we push it. Also, agree that having friends pump you up in a group setting is generally a bad idea, but having a friend that knows your riding well and is level headed is good to bounce opinions off. There has been times that I knew I could do something, but I was stalling until a friend I trusted assured me I had it, then hitting it with ease. You gotta know your friends though.
Congrats Kevin!!! Way to take the plunge!!! Seth great to see you getting back to good things and shredding!
How I stop being scared is I just cut my brake hoses and I can't stop so I have to do it (wouldn't recommend because it gets expensive)*I also broke my arm this way*
Riding BMX at the skatepark, when we were getting ready to leave if anyone said "I'll just have one last go at that something-or-other" it was like the kiss of death. Knowing when you've done enough for the day is important. Now I'm 45 and trying to re-learn things I could do on a bike but haven't in such a long time. I have to trust the fear sometimes and try to sideline at at others. Cool video. Also Kevin appears to be 'that friend' that everyone has.
I turn 62 today and bought a new Santa Cruz two weeks ago. I started riding mountain bikes way back when shocks were new and controversial in the racing world and you couldn't shift a bike with power on the pedals, like going up hills. On short climbs we'd just hop off and run the bike to the top. Nobody was really ridding mountain bikes back then (early 80's) so I switched over to road bikes, which I rode and raced USCF for 25 years.....riding straight and avoiding even the smallest bumps in the road. Last week was my first trail ride in 35 years. What people can do now on mountain bikes was absolutely unimaginable 35 years ago. Shocks being the game changer. The reason I fell 5-6 times the first two times out was because of fear and no confidence in the bike to handle trails that at one time would have been considered unpassable. I'm watching all your videos. This was a good one.
Good to see you on the bike again seth. Keep up the good work
Great job Seth! I'm so glad your back riding again!!!
Thank you for doing this video. Helped me very much!
I'm a massive fan of the Berm Peak CZcams channels, being a forty something year old woman and being new to the mountain biking world I've found the whole "MTB scene" a little daunting. Seth is so inclusive, I've stopped feeling like an old dork who doesn't belong and really started to challenge myself and my ability, I even got my front wheel a few inches off the ground on the weekend! I hope you get your confidence back Seth.
i recently had to crashes, the first i nearly broke my back the second i smashed up my shoulder making it had to ride without straining it again. as a result i have lost some of my confidence so this video has really helped, thanks a lot! i love you vids, Keep up the good work.
I coincidentally also just broke my left ankle and have an almost 2 month recovery in front of me. Glad to see you recovered!
Congrats Seth!!!! Good job!
Dude the timing is so right, i was learning my first jump 2 days ago but man i just could not send it, the jump was very small and the receiver is just a flat ground, but luckily this video was uploaded so thanks for the video seth!
Awesome video Seth đ Bringing the good mood đđ
So good to see more riding at berm peak. Glad to have ya back man!
Great to see you back on the bike keep it up đ
Just what the doctor orderedâŠ8 year old twin sons are going to their first MTB specific camp. Excited and a little anxious but this excellent encouragement. Thanks Seth
Congrats, your progression is amazing!
Congrats Kevin!!! Back to Seth, Congrats! Great to see you back riding!!!!!
Hi Seth, GREAT video. Good to see you back on your wheels!!!
Congrats to the both of you!
I think this works for me, Seth.
I just started to learn a bike length gap jumps and about 12inches bunny hopping. Went to some local trails and hit some gaps not too gnarly easy enough for a 42 y.o. To hit. One day my son invited me to the trails where gaps are a little longer and a bit higher lip.... long story short, after few cases i decided to level up a bit then crash twice. From then on i lost my confident. Watching this video would help me start over again. Thanks mate, appreciate you. Shout out to Kevin too. He trusted your skills.
I cant upload some of my crash video clips here dont know how. But thanks mate. Hope you recover well and back on doing the things you always love and wanted to do. Cheers...
Thank you for acknowledging it's ok to be hesitant and worried and that sometimes you're just not ready.
Grrrrrrrreat idea for a video! Love it dude, thank you!
I don't understand who would dislike seth's videos
Great video Kevin is a solid friend. I would say don't let your friends pressure you into stuff, but positive energy is contagious and helps build confidence. I was struggling with cats paw (at highland) friend said look you've got this, I've been watching you ride. So imma going to tow you in 3x, get the adrenaline out of your system, 4th time you lead me. We did that, and to this day I love that line more than any other. I just remember his energy and confidence he had in me to let me lead the tow once the my nerves settled out. So inspiring. Highly recommend that method of hitting the feature(s) at least 4x to get the adrenaline out and build confidence. But the key was he was positive the whole time.
Awesome video. Great cuts!
Good yo see u back on the bike! â€
Iâm so happy that your back dudeđ„
Oh I need this video my cousin has a mountain biking trail up at their cottage in Halliburton but Iâm too scared to do the skinny or the word feature that goes over a log I only have a front suspension mountain bike. Congrats for recovering from your injuryđđ»đđ»
After cracking some ribs last month I definitely needed this for some tips. Still working on it but getting there!
Good recovery! Both mental and physical!
I didn't realize how insain that line is until now! great job on this video. I'm suppressed this wasn't on your main channel.

This will probably help me on my race run today so thank you!

Glad to see you back on a bike Iâm nursing a shoulder but Iâm hopping within a year I can rip through Sedona and Mingus mt here in Arizona
Great to see you doing well and back on a bike Seth!
Love SteadySpin! Need more Kevin. Congratulations my dude!
Back in the early spring I fell and broke a vertebrae in my lower spine, a compression fracture. Iâm healed up and aside from the normal back issues of a middle aged dude I have zero confidence on my bike now. The weather is nice and my buddies are out riding and Iâm contemplating selling my bike. Iâve been riding my gravel bike on trails instead and while thatâs fun too, I miss the mountain biking. I am inspired by this Seth!
Recovering from an injury is tough, especially a back injury. Best of luck!
Keep it up man, facing similar struggles here with my knee. Got a brand new Santa Cruz 5010 sitting in my room for 3 months now... I haven't ridden it ONCE yet, plus a new jetski I did only ride once. So hard to look at them
Thanks seth ive been off my bike for a month and a half and i went to my local trails to ride to it and i was scared so scared i didnt even do a jump where your suppose to jump. Now i have some tools to conquer again thanks seth!
