The Soviet heavy tank Object 279 is widely considered to be one of the most overpowered vehicles in War Thunder, even after several BR changes. I decided to take this monster up against modern main battle tanks like the Leopard 2 and M1A2 to see how it would stack up, and it did surprisingly well.

This feels like cause gaijin gave it some BS arcade stats , almost as fast and agile as top tier mbt's . Twice the tracks don't let you traverse better , it makes you slower . It's just for ground pressure .

Though if you're bombing 279's something is wrong.

If I'm bombing a 279 then everything is as it should be.
So, this thing is useful at top tier and yet there's ppl complaining whenever it gets its br raised by a little bit, shocker. Either that or the one that's insanely op is spooksman himself, which would explain quite a lot tbh
At 8.3 it was bs, at 8.7 it trived and now theres a bunch of problems here and there at 9.0. Its good, but volumetric, xm803 and etc is pain, and when you know where to kill 279-its so over for them, chased 279 back in the day on gepard and killed it in roof
Editing can making any tank look busted at any BR. It’s fine at 9.0, just because I CAN kill Abrams with a Maus doesn’t mean it should fight them. The amount of times the 279 would just fail facing modern MBTs in game would be insane. lol penned almost every time and only being able to pen half the tanks with side shots
@@22GamingGuy But to be fair the 279 can at least move unlike the Maus and I dread to see it in my already weak M60 (coupla shots one shot even by Gapards)
He is quite good but people being salty about 279 tend to ignore that what makes it good is its armor (which is easy to pen if you know where its weak) at higher BR its just another mbt but with worse reload, no smoke, and no apfsds. That being said I love 279 for its historical cool factor.

God this thing never ceases to scare me. Also poor Abrams, it's just so easy to kill, I tend to treat it like a light tank now adays because of how I usually end up getting one shot anywhere. Oh yeah, one more thing. It would be pretty neat if you could do a video on the M26E1. I had no idea it was a thing until I saw one in a match, and that was the only one I've seen since then, so seeing a video on what it's like would be really cool. Dat 68 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.

And what really hurts is that I participated in the event to get this vehicle, dedicated my entire month to working on it, and all I was able to get was the autocannon Puma. I could have gotten an epic vehicle that looks goofy while still being extremely effective. So close yet so far.
Hi Spookston, the reason the ammo doesn't blow up on the high tier leopards is because DM53 uses a novel propellant that is basically impossible to ignite from a tank round

@Spookston they did something with the HP on the blowout internal doors. I found on Abrams about 6 months ago or so I was frequently surviving ammo racks from the front.

It makes sense, the path of least resistance for an ammo explosion doesn't change that much by just poking a hole in the armored door, but it was a surprising change when I started noticing it

You should try the m103 or conqueror in top tier. One has a large heatfs round and other has the apds... the reload is worse compared to the obj279. Or even try the is7 or the recent plz83 130?

hey spookston i just wanted to inform you that gajin made a thing so if you shot a guys barrel and it turns dark red then he can still shot one more shot before it breaks so make sure to break he's barrel completely before pushing him it works both ways btw it doesn't work with he's breech and sorry if my english is bad
I noticed that! It's gotten me killed a couple of times. I wasn't sure if it was by chance or not if the player got to shoot again. But, it appears they do definitely get one more shot.
Thats always been a thing, but the game randomly decides if you shoot and your barrel breaks and the round doesnt come out

If you pay attention to this vid, every single match was in urban settings, matches where his team spawn camps the enemy by the end, and most every kill is a side shot. The power of editing could make a Maus look like a solid 11.7 pick.

russia is losing more tanks than its gaining from production at the current rate, relying on modernization of vehicles from storage. depending on how long the war takes they may become more desperate to use older tanks, so hes not wrong

Watching these last few videos and here the joy and laughter in your voice has been great. I wish I had a suggestion that would lead to as much fun for you. Sweden is the reason I outright dismiss the russian bias stuff people like to throw around. I understand why some people feel the US gets nerfed cause the a10 is not right at all for a good example. russian bias though is straight up untrue. play sweden and play russia even in low tier and this is obvious that sweden is just easier to play. Sheesh they have a low tier premium with a like less than 1.5 second reload. With a 120mm!! and it has decent mobility and better gun traverse than most casemates. at 3.7! sure it isnt as capable as the object 279 in most any BR but that tank is an anamoly in the whole game really.

gotta admit, the 279 is one of my favourite tanks, that along with the german panther 2 and tiger 105 lineup. The 279 is that one tank, you can play even when having a bad day.
this was the only event vehicle I felt was worth the grind. it is absolutely ridiculous... and it was 7.7 when released. it absolutely broke that whole BR range for a month or two until it was fixed. the nice part about it is that you can play it like a heavy tank, AND you can play it like an MBT. it's got the armor, and it's got the mobility.
