Wonder what the residuals are on this ? with the reliability thrown in ? Wha=ts the MPG when the battery is flat?

Love Land Rovers but they’re getting a dreadful reputation for reliability and expensive repairs and the Americans love to knock them probably thinking Jeep is a better make .
Land Rover isn't what is used to be by a long way and I've been a Landy fan for years, but of the time when they actually were workhorses and not show pony's.

I've just been reading about how problematic recovering a Defender is, if it's in a truly offroad situation. Its owner's manual is very enlightening.
"The vehicle should not be towed on all four wheels and should not be recovered with the front or rear wheels suspended. Doing so can result in serious transmission damage. The method for recovery and/or transportation of the vehicle is on a transporter or trailer designed for that purpose."
"The recovery agent must activate the transmission park release before recovery commences. The procedure for activating the transmission park release is covered in a separate publication for service personnel."
If you don't, the following happens:
"If Neutral (N) is selected and the engine is then switched off, the transmission automatically selects Park (P) after 10 minutes has elapsed. If the transmission park release mechanism has not been activated and the vehicle is being towed, serious damage to the transmission will result."
"If the vehicle cannot be recovered via the correct method, the vehicle can be towed on all four wheels for a short distance."
" Do not tow the vehicle for more than 50 km (30 miles). Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph). Towing for a greater distance or at a higher speed may result in serious damage to the transmission."
So you can only go offroad to places that are within 50-ish km of access to a flatbed truck. ... but you can't even go that far unless you've learnt how to activate the transmission park release.
" Only tow the vehicle in a forward direction with all four wheels on the ground. Towing in a reverse direction, or with only two wheels on the ground, will cause serious damage to the transmission."
What if pulling it out backwards is the only access to where it's stuck?
" Do not tow the vehicle if the transmission cannot be set in Neutral (N)."
"Do not tow the vehicle if the rear electronic differential has failed in the locked position."
Crikey. With electrics that shut down the whole vehicle at the drop off a hat, how on earth does all THAT make it a good choice for serious offroading? Australia? Any continent except Europe? Hmm...
I live in backward South Africa.. u just made up my mind for me.. I will stick with ice engines.

My 1978 2 door Range Rover will do that easy.
Both hands on the wheel and fingers and thumbs on the outside. If you catch a rock and the wheel spins you break a digit.

Where is the 6spd manual? And why all that extra weight with batteries when they could just opt for a 3.7l v8 supercharged and turbo charged? 400 to 500 hp would be adequate power

The new defender is made by Tata motors. They don’t care about the real land rover fans. Grenadier was made by a man who loves the spirit of the original land rover. Just saying

I was going to watch this interested in hybrid vehicles, but when a certain presenter who happens to be a certain ethnic mix gets introduced I will not watch it, not that I am against ethnic mix but they are ticking BBC boxes and if you are offended by this good.

A vehicle with the absolute worst reputation for reliability....then, then you apply an unproven technology of hybrid drivetrain....you wind up with a vehicle that is absurdly priced & doesn't work...90 percent of the time it is going to be living in the shop...unusable.

The look, the stance, the opulence and above all, the price…… it’s a Discovery. Not a bad Discovery, the Discovery 5 is a bad Discovery……. a Frankenstein creation that would look better wearing a Ssangyong badge and a lower sticker price………
I owned and “managed” with the original Land Rover (Defender is a name I don’t recognise)…… However, I wouldn’t advocate a return to the cramped perch in the clattering original.
Land Rover should be looking at a cheap competitor to the John Deere Gator or Kawasaki Mule, crossed with an Isuzu D Max…….. something working farmers want and can use. Although, I would give it a few months before they get identified as trendy, double in price and litter Chelsea…….
