The Hugh character is desperately trying to maintain a veneer of respectability, despite miserably failing. It’s acted so well because Hugh seems aware that his veneer is paper thin. This is a very dark sketch.
Every so often he gives these guilty pleading glances on the lines of "please play along"
@@ilesalmo7724 Exactly - those glances are what make this sketch so dark.
Quite. Hugh was a well educated upper middle class gentleman, who lost his job and his wife ran away with his sister taking his children Henry and Henrietta with her.
Best answer to explain this sketch
This is clearly a man who enjoys being black-out drunk far more than he enjoys being conscious. For a certain value of 'enjoys.'
This dark English humor... period!😂
It's disturbingly real. I used to live above a corner shop and there was a couple who used to do this same act - come in, talk loudly about having friends over for a dinner party, be distraught over having to cater for their heart drinking friends, then would stock up on two trays of 24 cans of Tenant's Pilsner, a bottle of buckfast fortified wine and four bottles of the nastiest cheap vodka in the plain white label. They would leave, go to the park next door and hide behind the custodian's shed where they would sit on stacked tires, below my window, drink everything and fuck loudly. They would leave about 9pm before the smackheads came and kicked them out of their sweet spot under my window.
I was in that shitty flat for five months, shared with three other people over three bedrooms. Those drunks were there every single day. The same shit every day. Between the rats, the bugs, the mould, the wildly unsafe electrics, the leaking roof, the hole in the floor, the decommissioned fire escape and the threatening and sexually aggressive landlady, I seriously considered becoming homeless rather than staying. It was only the example of the drunks and the smackheads outside my window that made me realise it could still be worse.
F£ck me. Did you used to live in a Ken Loach film?
The see you tomorrow at the end is what really makes this sketch. Equal parts hilarious and sad
" See you tomorrow Hugh ". Love it.
I used to work in a local shop and this was a daily occurrence with some customers
this is probably my favourite sketch of theirs. For me, it's all about Mitchell speaking and acting like a posh but genial fellow who seems like a respectable and relatively well-put-together type at first, and then that respectability just cascades downwards with each new revelation xD
You got it the drunk part so quick, though, that I'm not sure it worked on you 😂
The one where they are on a holiday on a canal boat and they're supposed to be looking after the family dog I'm not sure of the episode title it's the one thats filmed in POV from eye level
Peep show on the canal barge
It doesn't fool anyone lol, but it's polite to play along.
Pretending everything is fine until the bitter end is the British way!
That is how David Mitchell actually speaks, always and in every part he plays.
That look Hugh gives as grabs the 2nd can
"Yes Hugh, it's the most alcohol per milliliter, at the lowest cost, in this corner shop." That right there, is the best line for me. That really gets down to the bone of the sketch.
The thing about this is - this is all very realistic. Having worked in shops like this one in my younger days, I can tell you that this scenario is very real. And the "not quite correct" suit, the "high brow"/"highly enunciated" speech to try to convince the person who sells them their drink each day that they are in full control, the digging through pocket lint to find enough coins, the pretending to look at "normal" wares - only to just get the drinks... It's all VERY familiar to me.
I still quote "This is an Alcoholic Lager Beer, isnt it?"
Four cans of angry and a swan strangler please
Ooh look, one's eyes have opened.
I must continue to pour alcohol down my throat in order to stop the shakes and try to feel somewhat normal before I pass out again.
🤣
(I get to say this because I'm a recovered alcoholic, that was normal life once)
He's being deliberately theatrical because he's trying to put on a facade that he his actually thirsty and not an alcoholic which he is. This sketch is funny but painfully true
Alan, as lagers go, 10% alcohol is a real thumper.
There are parts of London you could venture into where people speak like that, I won't mention any names because I don't want the property prices to collapse. 😂
The epitome of not being honest with yourself. He puts a brave face on it, but underneath just wants to get pissed as quickly as possible. He sounds like how C3PO would go into a corner shop to buy stuff.
M & W really are fantastic at bringing pathos into their comedy, they make you laugh at some truly sad s**t!
The best example for me is Old Holmes, that sketch made me laugh and cry.
That sketch is genuinely heart breaking and Mitchell is AMAZING in it. Oscar worthy to be honest!
M&W are comedy geniuses. Their sketch shows & their sitcom Peep Show are great.
I wish i could rewatch Peep Show on Netflix or Prime.
They're good performers, but I assume a lot of the best comedy elements from both shows come from writers
@@chrisnorman1902 yeah they definitely had other writers submit sketches to the show, and Peep Show is completely written by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, although I’m sure they chipped in a few things during production
This is clearly a better class of drunk 🍺🍷
See you tomorrow Hugh 😂 that hit hard!
I've always found this sketch tragic rather than comedic!
Hes basically playing a middle to upper class person who's trying not to give away he wants to buy alcohol drink ,that's why he's trying to buy other things before the drinks .
The sketch they did of James Bond gambling still cracks me up. The doomsday game show when they're talking about "the event" is also a favourite.
Conversely (as an English guy), I've been watching some of the short segments from TV Nation recently. For 30 year old content it's still pretty funny.
I love that one, as well as "Nümberwang"
@@riinak7212 Yeah, I seem to remember Numberwang appeared more often too.
Slight tangent but I never see any of the reaction channels covering; Spaced, League of Gentlemen, Brass Eye or The Day Today. It always seems to be the more mainstream clips (not to say that that's bad comedy).
As with most sitcoms, Spaced takes a few episodes to settle in but the writing thereafter is sublime. League of Gentlemen perfectly magnifies our weirder, more eccentric citizens. Both of Chris Morris' faux news/current affairs series were hilariously on point.
People definitely do cover classic comedy series' like; Blackadder or Only Fools but there's a tendency to watch the same ones. Even Bottom escaped the net somehow!
This is spot on. Ask any shopkeeper in the UK and they'll know several of thse characters. I've done it myself!!
i do it every day
@@paulflint6254 ive slowed down a bit recently. My pupils at school buy their vapes from the same shop.
Love the way you basically predicted the end of the sketch 🤣
So funny, he's playing a drunk trying not to appear to be a drunk...he thinks others won't notice if he does the bad acting. Funny but sad at the same time...
I know a few people who speak exactly like. Very eccentric upper middle class people
The thirst has affected him so much he didn’t see the bottles of water right in front of him, under the till.
It’s terrible when that thirsty.
"Are we the baddies?"
Too young to have seen Mitchell and Webb on telly, but I love seeing them in my recommended on CZcams.
As a recovering alcoholic I do love this sketch.
I remember when I was on the juice that I never bought only booze at the supermarket to convince myself that everything was fine. I'm still drinking but without the blackouts and character changes, I think it worked out okay. Just have to stay away from everything over 5%, so "Jürgen Bräu" would be out of question.
@oldfrittenfett1276 Absolutely, always a bottle of gin ,head of lettuce, and a birthday card.
@@chrisbfreelance? I am still a drunk, but not selfdestructive.
This is one of my favourite sketches, the fact he does the same routine everyday put tries to not make it look like he has a problem 😂
Excellent observation, you called this perfectly. Just sitting outside drinking.
This one - is one of the greatest EVER!
Queen Victoria and the linden tree. You will love it
I remember being in a shop in London when a local wanderer (homeless guy who would wander around town buying a beer at every off-license/corner shop) He was so pissed off that his can of Super T the day before was too cold and probably a bit frozen made him have watery stool. I have to say I did sympathise with him. What an awful predicament if you don't have a loo to go to.
A must watch for you, Harry Enfield and Chums, English for Aliens!
Watched my mates father act like this trying to hide his alcoholism. Used to hide cans around the area we lived then he'd go from one hidey hole to another to get each drink so he wasn't seen walking around with a bag full. It's sad as he knows it's no good but he can't stop.
Hugh: “GOODNESS I’M THIRSTY I really am!” Best line ever said!
I don't have a drinking problem, I drink and fall over. No problem 😁
A brilliant sketch. I also love the Gordon Ramsey/Kitchen Nightmares one by these two
If you haven't already, you should check out Mitchell & Webb's Linden Tree sketch. That one cracks me up!
I know people who talk like that. Posh people in my village. They call everyone “My dear old thing” and say “Good chap”. And lots of other similar phrases.
Mitchell and Webb did some hilarious sketches.
I also like the one where they go into a pub pretending that everything is new and that they are interested in trying it out once only to shatter the facade with every move (the barkeeper knows them, they have a slate, they down the pints in two seconds etc.).
1:30 I have met many in the UK who talk like that.
For more Mitchell and Web - Casino Royal, are we the baddies? And homeopathic ER are great!
The accent shows us Brits he is middle class, which is what is required to make the sketch work. A working class sketch of a similar situation would see the alcoholic repeatedly ask how much the product they buy every day is, and then add up their money to have 12p or so less, hoping to be 'let off' the difference while the assistant holds steadfast, pointing out there are other (lower alcohol) products available in their price range. They wouldn't bother with the cherade of the paper/fruit. If you want working class comedy Mitchell and Webb isn't the place to look, try 'the Royale Family' or similar.
No brown paper bags needed here. Drink where you like lol
Have you seen David Mitchell's Soap Box? He has a series on youtube each about 2 - 5 mins long where he goes off on his signature rants about otherwise innocuous topics and situations in excruciating detail
Ooh In my drinking days this was me😖 too painful but too funny!!
There is a guy who goes to the local liquor store and acts like this. Oh wait, it's me 😂
😂
I worked counter at a restaurant in Atlanta in the early '90s. Back then, you could serve beer on Sundays, but only if the customer bought food. The cheapest thing on our menu was chips and salsa, so at around noon Sunday there would be a line with a lot of homeless people waiting to get in. This one guy would do the exact same thing *every* Sunday:
Him: "Yeah, ok, lemme get some chips & salsa . . ."
Me: "Ok-ahem- *anything else?* "
Him: [his eyes pretend to scan the drink cooler] "Umm, yeah, lemme get, umm uhhhhhhhhhhhh . . ."
Me: "A . . . pitcher . . . of Natural Light?"
Him (finally making eye contact): "Yeah, you know what? That sounds good, actually."
Me: "Right, that'll be $4.95"
I always gave him an extra large helping of chips as I knew he probably wasn't eating enough. He would nurse that pitcher for hours, poor guy. This went on for years.
Years later, when I was a manager, he showed up with a "lady friend" (prostitute) wearing fresh new clothes (apparently having recently cashed some sort of government check). He boldly made his order, without all the rigamarole (and TWO pitchers of Natty), and they went to their booth.
A few hours later, I had to kick him out because I came back from the prep room, looked over, and she was on the floor under their table, *actually giving him a blowjob.*
Me: "Look man, I hate to ruin your day, but you gotta go right now, man!"
Him (& her): "Oh we're SO sorry-it won't happen again!!!"
Me: "You're right-it won't. You do realize there are families in here with their young kids, right? Up you go . . ."
Him: Can we at least finish our . . . meal?
Me: "Umm-not *that* one. But go ahead and chug the beer if you want, and then get out."
I stood there while they emptied the pitcher and walked them out. There was a real part of me that hated wrecking what was probably the only moment of sublime joy this weathered old guy had experienced in years, but Holy Smoke!
Thanks
Thank you so much for that
Class act👌
Definitely some people speak like that over here.. crossed paths with a few in my time
They have a sketch called discoverer that's well worth checking out
I once saw a guy plonk his arse down on the pavement outside the newsagents to swig his bottle of White Lightning cider in spite of his house being only about thirty yards away from the newsagents.
Oh my gosh, I've just found you and I'm hooked. LOOOVE your reactions to Rowan Atkinson and Monty Python. Your laugh makes me soooo happy. :) Please consider reacting to *"Argument Clinic - Monty Python - The Secret Policeman's Balls"*!!
I use to work in a convenience store in UK. This is turned up to 11 but I can assure you this isn't that far off the mark. I had one customer bring nappies sorry diapers and a six pack of stella to the counter and realise they didn't have enough and put the nappies back. I had a lovely old guy called Frank who was the stores adopted alcoholic. Use to be a chess master and now just a pathetic shell of a man pouring cheap red wine down himself everyday. I was 18 and seeing Frank put me off drink for life. I made a vow i'd never be there. Shame he was really nice, the drink just had it's claws in him.
Breakfast of champions 😁😁
Watch everything of Monty Python, beginning with the parrot and then the cheese shop and then the book shop
This was me for more years than I care to say.
M&W did the best ever take on the Moon landing.
Looks like my corner shop. 😅
Great to see you Alan
You gotta see one of the regular sketch characters of the Fast Show, where this reminded me of (I can't describe it properly right now but someone will ...) The Lower Field sketches there where a gentrified land owning squire would speak like this to his oldest farm hand who he had a crush on ....... Definitely recommend the Fast Show (Johnny Depp joined in once).
Also glad you found Les Dawson but not a great sketch. He was much better than that.
Lastly please check out the late great Ken Dodd, one of only a handful of comedians who would have me choking with laughter; and still slam you with a second punch while you were down.
This is the only Reacts channel I watch, and very regularly now, Great stuff!
Your find the mannerism and vocabulary of that character is not uncommon and quite relatable to some of us who have met people like him here in Britain. My old geography teacher had the manners and vocabulary of a Victorian gentleman that would not sound out of place at Eton university. I always wondered why he ended up in a inner city comprehensive teaching scrotes like us 🤔.....
I had a teacher here in Ireland who dressed and spoke like it was the 1920s. 3 piece suit, carnation in the buttonhole, steel tips on his leather soled shoes, rimless spectacles, umbrella over his arm, moustache and wore a gown. Smoke Gitanes. This was in the 90s. He wasn’t even that old. 50s maybe. Everyone loved him though.
I think this is as close to Monty Pythons standard as I’ve seen them do. It’s outstandingly good.
Some older middle/upper middle class men in England talk like this 😂 🏴
You interrupted too soon 😂
Have you seen M&W Evil Genius ( facing the restrictions of Health & Safety Regs. )
He's speaking 'proper' English. Try the delightful Stephen Fry.
It's a shame they didn't do more series of their sketch show.
This is bittersweet to me; I had an alcohol problem and used to buy cheap nasty white cider. At my Sikh run corner shop they'd sometimes let me have it on tick if I was skint. I always paid them back and once the owner's son gave me a lift home as I was struggling to walk. I never want to get like that again.
Sikh’s are good people. I’m sure there’s asshole Sikhs as well but I haven’t met one.
BTW love the LP top your wearing, they were my favourite band till poor Chester left us
Yeah, this is funny but everytime I go to my local shop to buy a crate of Zywiec I know they're talking about me. They almost snatch me off the street so they can sell me a case.
Alcoholism is laughed at by shop owners. I can't understand what they're saying, but let's be honest, they're mocking me. Fucking cheek considering the money I give them.
If you sell 10% lager, you will attract alchoholics
I talk like that!
When you want to buy something but are to scared to buy it so you speak like this lol
Mitchell & Webb - Some of the sketches REALLY suck but when they get it right, they´re hilarious!
Check out when they do sketches about God lol ... or the one where the guy takes over when Hitler dies & he only gets to be the new Fuhrer for 2 minutes before they have to surrender!
"Who the hell talks like that"? Some English people !
😂😂❤
10%, eh? Not many lagers can carry that off - you want a good Imperial Stout or a nice Sour at that level.
😂😂Would love to see some peep show reactions
Have you ever been to South England?
Seen people like this. one of the saddest people you can imagine
The Alcoholic in denial :)
It's funny because it's me.
😁👍👊💪🍻
👍👍😊👍👍
Have you seen ''are we the baddies?''?
Yes and my audio from my end was messed up. It's been over a year since I've done it and I've only seen it the once. May wind up doing a review or refresher of it since I don't have a video of it up on my channel.
have a look at the mighty boosh one the best comerdy the beeb have done
Lots of people i know talk like that
Functioning alcoholic 😂😹🙌🏼 why lie 🍻
Such graceful brutality. 🤨Be well. 😉
No it's called received pronunciation,R.P. all the rich use it
NARRFFF
You haven't been to England, lol
What is up with the guy making the comments? Is he not aware that this is a humorous skit, not reality?
Love beer, but dunno how alcoholic you have to be to drink 10% + beer. Tastes like dishwater with really bad moonshine.
Special brew and tennents. Lovely lol
Disagree. Tons of stouts, IPA's, double bocks, and other imperials are 10 and over and are tasty.
@@TheEclecticBeard M'kay. Maybe i just got the terrible ones then :P
Rich ppl in england talk like that, thats the point...why are trying to 2nd guess it?
thats called a posh english
