Thank you for detailing a Tesla! I bought a 2020 Model Y with 30,000 miles on it and plan to give it a full detail this summer. I’ve heard that the Tesla paint is “tender” ie thin? So I’ve been looking for detailing products that match well. I have a cabinet full of your recommendations since I first found your review of the Rupes DA polishers awhile back. Yes for the protection of the interior plastics.
Yeah Tesla paint hasn't had the best reputation (same goes for their overall fit and finish, panel gaps, etc). But they have improved the paint quality on some models since 2021. They aren't close to German level yet, but give them time, and like any fairly new car manufacturer, they'll get it right at some point. They have so much money, they should invest in the best production facilities instead of buying old Toyota plants hehe.
Once properly detailed though, they do come out nicely. :)
Did my first Tesla model Y 2 days ago...what a sweet car to clean that is! Everything is such an easy task to get to in the interior aswell.
The only thing I had was the left back seat, whenever we adjusted it, the driverseat went flat, time and time again..it's said to be an error in the programming of the car and needs an update.
But loved this Tesla model :)

Sometimes people don't have the time to watch a full detailing wash/session so these types of videos where it's "sped up" is perfect. And then there are times where you just wanna have a nice beverage while watching the wash real time.. and you have those too. All around great videos Pan!

Hey Pan, I've been watching you for years now and I have to say I have learned so much about car detailing and its become something I look forward to doing every weekend. Thanks so much for putting out these videos.
However, as a beginner who was just starting to get into detailing, I wish you would do a video on more budget-friendly/beginner kits for people who would need to buy almost everything and doesn't want to spend hundreds in up-front costs for so specialized chemicals and equipment, but rather the bare minimum to get started with tips on where you can expand your kit in the future such as a pressure washer or tire dressings. I know personally (when I was VERY new) I was overwhelmed with how many steps you have in your more thorough videos and didnt know what steps I could skip out on to save money (such as clay barring, as a beginner I didnt know how crucial that was and added to the up-front cost) and it caused me to be hesitant to invest so much in a hobby I didnt know if I would enjoy. Just some thoughts from my perspective since what might be common sense to someone like yourself who has been doing this for years, someone who is brand new to the detailing world could feel overwhelmed in how to start.

That came out beautiful Pan. When I picked up my new Tesla Model 3 (blue) on August 2nd, 2023, the paint needed some serious work as their dealership detailers made swirls on all panels. I mentioned it to Tesla and they wanted to detail my car again. I thanked them and said, "No, let me take care of the paint as i'm a home detailer myself for my own cars". Did a full exterior detail and color correction on the car and it looked twice as better from when I picked up the car. I used a Rupes ultra fine white pad with Meguire's 205 and that did the trick for the issue I had in hand.
Thanks! And yeah, a new car is never new until it's properly detailed.
- at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example.
- vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc
- vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements
- at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches
- at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat.
If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well.

Thanks Nicko! As far as the coatings, you really can't compare both as it would be unfair.
The Armor Shield IX is an entry level consumer grade coating. 2+ years durability at a super affordable price, easiest coating I have ever applied. The DuraSlic DS 1500 Xtreme is a professional grade 7 year coating that costs a lot more, so obviously performance is on another level.
You have to pick a product according to your needs and budget.

My uncle has just got a red model Y. The paint is horrendous. Lots of holograms & buffer trails. Such a shame as the car itself is gorgeous. After changing how I wash the car for a day, I found out how important a two bucket and snow foam wash is, because I wiped the paint with a cloth without properly taking the dirt off with a mitt and there was a ton of holograms,I only did this to see what exactly would happen and I’m going to polish it soon, watching your videos helps me adjust my methods when I wash cars thanks
We always learn new things. Even after 25 years of detailing, I still learn new things all the time. It's an always evolving world in the detailing scene with new techniques and products and you have to stay on top of your game.

the finish was real nice and glossy. ive been detailing many Tesla and i agree, the paint needs more imporvement. Living here in Iceland i see how bad it can be plus the harch enviroment gives the clear coat more reason to get a polish treament.

Will you ever do a video of how to care for a wrapped car as well? My model 3 is wrapped with XPEL stealth and I have my little routine of cleaning it but I'm sure I could vastly improve, you can use it for a video if you want ;)

Teslas do have a wiper blade mode that will move them so you can pop them up and out the way.
Yeah most cars have some sort of thing like that, but it can take time for detailers to figure out each specific vehicle's mode and where to dig into menus... Just lift the blades, it's not complicated.
I am glad I watched this one even though I am not that interested in Teslas. I have been using Rinse Less with limited success but based on your usage I have been using a PIR of maybe 2% at best. Will try again with more product next time. Thanks for the great video!

Seen a double upload. To the up most respect.. here owe a 2020. Besides a normal wash and putting was spray on.. and detailing my rims and tire shine spray... Really want the best of the best on knowing how to actually properly wash the car. From the outside how to get the rest bugs and less cleaning work in the long run. You said you used Carpro PERL for the interior plastic. Did you use any other product to clean the inside ?
As this was brand new, only a light cleaning was needed and I used CarPro InnerQD for that task.

Polishing isn’t complicated once you understand the basics. It’s near impossible to get it wrong.

Pan, I notice that in your "after" wrap-around video at the end, the cars you Ceramic coat always have their plates attached. Do you remove these for wash/prep, and coat times? I ask because I rarely see you work on the back end of the car to be able to tell. I would hope you do.

Can one ceramic coat a new car that just came in on a factory order? I ordered a Mazda CX 5 arriving hopefully in July
Yes, this is exactly what was done here. The earlier you start protecting the paint, the better. New cars delivered from the factory already have their paint cured in ovens. Ready for protection.
It would be different if you had a repainted car following and accident or collision repair. Then you must wait 1 to 2 months before applying any form of protection on the vehicle.

Hey Pan, what’s the best way to correct and protect against the water spot rainbowing effect that happens to the satin black aluminum trim on Teslas? So many people recommend WD40, but that just seems superficial and temporary. Thanks!
I haven’t seen that issue yet so it’s hard for me to say. I mostly detail brand news cars now. And I protect them all with a coating. To make maintenance easier. The owners haven’t reported rainbow stains yet.
