Building a Small Timber Frame Porch, PLUS the Hardest Metal Siding Install
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 10. 2020
- In this episode of Cabin in the Woods, we build a small timber frame porch over the front walk door, and once completed have to cut and install an extremely complicated sheet of metal siding. These are the types of cuts and installs that you can't rush, and you have to be careful when installing so nothing gets damaged.

Let me know here in the comments if you are still interested in seeing this project unfold? I have been so busy I apologize it's taking awhile...might be time to find an editor??? Thanks for all of your support
Definitely interested in watching this home unfold. I'm hooked! Not only am I taking notes, but I'm drawing inspiration from your builds. Can't wait for the finish of the outside and then the inside project!!
Man great cut around on the porch roof your truly an inspiration to us all
100% interested keep going :)
I love seeing the progress on this project and am happy to wait for the videos. It is great to see craftsmen at work!
I'm very interested to see the rest of this project unfold. Keep up the good work man, your awesome.
With Ryan's czcams.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE plan, I was like one taken by the hand and led step by step from start to finish. Thank you very much Ryan!
YES I want to see the end of this build, don’t stop now great job.
Must be a huge sense of satisfaction for you guys to step back to and look at the building and know that you did that. Awesome to watch the progress.
As my wife said while watching over my shoulder, "Well that's definitely not the easy way." Not the easy way, no, but the right way if you take pride and care in your work. Nice job guys!
Looking better every episode. Can't wait to see this thing done. But don't want it to end either. We understand that you're busy. So no need to apologize. Awesome build.
Regarding writing down measurements as you get older ... agree 100%. No shame in writing them down, even if younger. Used to work for a wonderful man who often said, "Paper is for remembering; brains are for new ideas!"
Man I wish you were in NC. You guys are the most precise builders I have ever seen. Hope your customers appreciate your efforts for perfection
Yes please Kyle, I would love to see the rest of this build, it has been Amazing so far.
The Visual on the Thermal Bridging, Outstanding
Such precise work on that little section today. You guys make it look so easy, but I know there’s a lot of work that goes in to each area. Great video.
It's looking great - thanks for bringing us along. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. Exciting days.
Wow! The detail in craftsmanship and investment in time just to that steel around that one area is phenomenal! I presume the clients get to see the videos of your work and realize how appreciative they ought to be for your effort. Thank you for demonstrating diligence and the priority of a job well done. You both are great roll models for those that are willing to learn and observe your work ethic. Stay blessed, guys.
I hope you continue to enjoy making and editing videos. I'm sure it takes up a lot of your "free" time. As a retired upholsterer, I've very much enjoyed the complex cuts you have to make with a very unforgiving material. At least it's not $300 per yard. Please keep up the good work, both construction and video... Looking forward to seeing the completed chimney.
Kyle you and Greg are amazing! Perfectionist the highest compliment I have ever given. Enjoy seeing all of your work. Keep it coming. Sometime we need hire a video editor when the work load drowns us.
Yeah metal siding tends to really suck when you got to cut and maneuver around a stoop but it’s always super satisfying to look back at the finished product and be able to say that you did all those awkward angles and measurements, and you got it done well.
Yes. Definitely want to see this build to its completion.
Can't believe you were able to get that real complicated piece of vert siding in there in 1 piece. You do know 99.99% of guys would have done it in 2 pieces, right ? They maybe would have cut your piece down to half its width, then had 1 more overlap there. But you stuck it out and put the work in. That's why we watch.
Top notch work !
Great quality !
You never stop learning. You just get better. Not to lose sleep over.. It comes with time. Love what you do and you will always be content.
Yes ... I want to see you finish the build. I anticipate and love all of your videos ... Thank You!!!
I'm impressed with your precise cuts.
@ RR builders. Yes we want every detail you can give, your are a beast man. Keep up the good work
Yes .... all of your different build series, you bring a fresh perspective and new approach. Amazing professional work with explanations that are logical.
Brilliant video - please keep showing us this project it's wonderful to see how you get things done.
Hard to find any fault in your work. You are a credit to your profession.
That metal siding is SOOOOOOO satisfying to look at, but nervewracking to watch getting installed! Goooooood job Kyle and Greg!
im amazed that sheet went on in one piece, well done lads.
You're a VERY professional builder ! Love your attention to detail and your commitment to excellence !
Definitely want to keep seeing these videos for this project! I look forward to you uploading every week!
Watching that porch build is/was strangely satisfying, as usual a great job guys, 👍👍👍👍
Love seeing absolute professional work being done! every video!!!
Fantastic fit-up. Thanks for showing the entire install of that first side steel sheet. Well done. And yes, please continue this series. Dont mind waiting more for content.
Yes! Can’t wait for the next installment
Wow, amazing considering the siding around the door and roof is one sheet!, true craftsmanship
Japanese woodworkers come here to admire the ancient skill of screwing things together without the need for elaborate chisel work...🤣
That is hilarious. You win!😂🤣
How did we survive the last 1000 years without timberlock and Makita??
Hahaha yea I laughed so hard when I read “timber frame porch” in the title and the thumbnail showed him screwing the yoke in with a Timber Lok 🤣🤣🤣
@@TCSwizz2 yea , timber frame look , actually a post frame
I would have said that it was impossible to fit those 2 sheets of steel around that roof. Nice job doing the impossible and making it look good in the end.
👍👍
That was awesome, I could watch all day! 👍
I was getting anxious when you were trying to fit that first siding piece in there! 😆
Perfect 👌
Great work. You are a perfectionist that gets things done 100% the right way.
this had to have been the hardest cuts I've seen you do just WOW great job that porch looks great good idea
GRK- an impressive showing of what great engineering has accomplished with those self drilling Timberlock screws. Any other fastener that long would have split those short timber pieces.
This guy putting guys out of work by teaching the entire world how to do it themselves. 👏
Um actually no... People only put this much effort and time into building something like this because they could never afford to pay someone else.... So regardless no1 was going to be paid to do it.
This would discourage people trying it because this is how much skill is required and the difficulty of the project. I’m good and I don’t want it, there is no way my customers could afford it. Nice detail work guys.
Stay strong and stay safe.
Love to see your build video’s so no need for apologies mate.
Love the farmer style scaffolding used here👍
lots of 29 gauge used up north, down here. East Texas we use all 26 gauge. I like the 29, easy to cut and use. But everything down here has to be a Class 4 panel. Love your details, happy to see contractors take pride in their work!
Man.. fitting that steel. That some determination!
You make this look so dang easy! Nice job 👍🏼
Great work. Love watching good carpenters. I have those same safety "squint" glasses.
Yes would like to see this build. Love the timber frames.
That’s a damn good looking miter!!!
Your buildings are a work of art!
Hearing you say “oh for shizzle” was great. Lol
That was incredible work. Amazing!
That measuring, cut and install at about 12:27 made me subscribe!
Very impressed with your detail work.
*Looks very stable! Great work done!*
That was incredibly satisfying to watch.
Joints are so tight it looks like it grew there. Great addition to the project and yes, please continue with this series. Maybe Greg will curl some full boxes of Rosetta Stone instead of those featherweight posts.
toujours un très bon travail la découpe est l'ajustement est vraiment super vous faite un travail remarquable merci pour les vidéos
don't stop now, we come this far let see it through the end.
You guys do great work. Yes we want to see everything
Technically this is post and beam as you did not use timber wood joinery (mortise, tenon, etc). Looks great.
Those cuts around the porch were crazy. Do you ever say to yourself “this ain’t worth it”?
haha never
Kyle after watching your videos for over a year I would have to say it not in your DNA to say it’s not worth it. You are a true craftsman.
I watch you make these cuts and try to estimate how many pieces of scrap I’d have before I cut one correctly. Skill and motivation.
I would have had to make overlap pieces. I can't see me being able to do that, even without the monkey impression.
@@RRBuildings If its worth doing, its worth it always and forever. (and doing it right, is always worth it)
I will say it again you guys are a amazing talent....
Incredible, I'm so jealous of your job.
As always excellent presentation and detail.
Worm drive 👍 I have 5 different worm drives including new table saw. Quality tools says a lot to me!
Yea, loving see this project come to life, please keep it up. It's my destress from being in front of a computer all day haha. Also, would totally support a Patreon if you set one up. Keep up the amazing work, super impressive and inspirational.
I have one... link probably in video description thanks man
Dang...that’s one helluva big circular saw !
I like your channel, and the tool reviews and comparisons
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL JOB GUYS‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Too bad you sped up on the tricky panel install on the right side of the porch. I would have loved to hear through the entire process. You two have amazing communication skills. On most jobsites the boss yells at others and nothing gets done right. Keep calm and communicate. This was a masterpiece.
Superb. Teamwork Excellent
This is my kind of reality show, nice.
Your dedication to craftsmanship is inspirational. There are too few of your type around today. Did you always work to these high standards? If not, when and why did you change?
hey kyle , that show with intricate cut into j channels and sloped roof detail was very satisfying to watch once it was victorious. However, i couldn't help but to be reminded on my AL-13 days and when we ordered J-channels instead of their snap-lock trim. we were screwed exactly like the porch in this video: firmly. waiting 3 weeks for snap locks aloud the forgiveness your looking for especially in those exact situations. non ferrous blade on the chop saw made for some beautiful miter work aswell. Tucking rigid material into anything more then two dimensions will lead to loss of productivity and is where a snap lock j trim might be beneficial is exactly there. It wouldn't take away from the exact measurements on ur panel , but it would make installing a heck of alot easier. Everyone makes them, james hardy , maibec , etc . grab a rubber mallet and snap lock your way into the future.......... and the future is NOW!! lol
You guys got Canelo Álvarez doing some building.
Man I was looking for something about enduro motorcycle and somehow I've got here and stacked here :D must say you are accurate and precise very beautiful job.
Thanks!! That’s a funny transition of content
Man, your circular saw is a beast!
OH, you can't quit now! Don't leave us hanging; I want to see you finish this thing!
Looks great!!
Without realizing. And with surprise of having more left.. I stop eating my food, stopped rocking in my chair, and had my phone 2 inched from my face as you 2 were putting in those pieces. Thanks for 2 wins, the install and me having more food left!
Simple and beautiful. Im adding a poor mans version of this to my house tomorrow, was just looking for a cool design. Thanks
Good job, guys.
Hey Kyle and Greg. Watch your medial meniscus. You guys are doing a lot of bending but Im sure its gonna come out great as always!!!! Wish you guys where here in Florida!
That is the biggest circular saw I have seen!
excellent advice, fully recommended
in the edit where you noted "temporary structural screw" along the line of the beam all i could hear in my head was "using math, I was able to accurately determine the angle this text should be placed at" 😂
That skil beam saw is amazing 😂😂
You killed it !
Amazing video as always I do like Greg’s tool belt can you keep a tape measure on the left hand side top pouch?
Definitely 👍watching from the UK
Dios te dio unas manos fantásticas, ya que mientras destruyen construyen. Eres el mejor Canelo.
Started rocking a Festool impact!
Great work Guys
good job, congratulations from Romania
curious to how you tied in the wall side, what did you screw into did you put wood on the other side of the metal siding? love the black framed windows and doors
These guys are the best!
Lol. For shizzle. 😂😂Looked like a tough piece to install. Nicely done
RR Buildings is awesome!!
Love to see how you measured the small pieces under those front rafter beams?
nice work guys.
