"it is the primary ingredient in bile, so maybe that's what gives Redbull it's unique taste" - this really does explain a lot.

That it tastes the same going down as it does back up makes so much more sense now.
Another thing I wanted to add: what about simmering all the stuff instead of boiling? I believe if you boil the "tea" too hard it's going to destroy some aroma chemicals instead of extracting them. I think simmering might give you a different result. That's no critique, just a thought :)
the best result would probably come from making a concentrated extract from the aromatics with a neutral alcohol (such as vodka), and using that. This is what "bitters" are in cocktail making - concentrated infused liquors that impart aroma and flavor, needing only a few drops to have an effect
additionally some volatile aromas might (or definitely) will be evaporated. it is basically a steam distillation
Or sous vide
boiling can make tea a bit bitter, definietly kills yerba mate taste
Just on a chemistry note, boiling water never goes above 100 ⁰C, simmering water sits a little below that but not much. Not impossible, but its unlikely compounds would have a strong difference in their decomposition between (lets say) 90-100 ⁰C. Below about 85 degrees id says thats getting more likely (purely hunch in this case, but from a chemistry researcher who spends a lot of his days looking at how various reactions change with temperature). More likely is that more volatile flavour compounds are evaporating off faster, as mentioned in a previous comment.
Depends a bit what you count as simmering temperature though, that seems to be quite ambiguous.
The way you peeled that orange was just criminal.
Fr who tf peels like that
you need to cut the peels off instead of peel them when u do this, these are juicing oranges so they cannot be peeled like regular oranges. they're similar to limes or lemons in the way that they're nearly impossible to peel like a regular orange and it just makes a huge mess

Taurine is actually supposed to have a relaxing effect. It can help with anxiety and lowers blood pressure. It might be added in order to reduce some side effects of the caffeine.
It also alleviates fatty liver. Very useful stuff
Recent paper published from a Norwegian university shows 20-25% longer life expectancy for every mammal they tested daily Taurine supplementation on...
Where i can get taurine?? Purchase..
@@maximilianogabriel9982 any health or supplement store, probably online all over the world as well, Amazon for instance
Taurine absolutely does help you relax. (but it is also used in energy production) After several months of bad sleep, trying all kinds of herbal teas, magnesium etc. and nothing really helping, taurine was the game changer. I really hate the stance of "This substance does nothing because it hasn't been proven in our approved study". The FDA probably doesn't allow the claim that water helps with hydration because no study has proven it - and nobody would fund such an idiotic study.
Someone tell Nile Red so he can finally get his caffeine-free Red Bull.

Emergen-C is as far away from redbull as you can get
I quit energy drinks about half a year ago. However I think I would have loved to see a monster recipe just without the caffeine. This is awesome keep it up.
Monster had a version without caffeine - "Unleaded", unfortunately it was discontinued, but I also like a taste a lot and was really disappointed that it's not available anymore.
I have a caffeine free Monster recipe: Carbonated water, half chewed bubble gum, plastic straw particles, partially hydrogenated hydrogen, 18 kilograms of sugar
Monster is currently making a seltzer that swaps the caffeine blend with a little alcohol. It isn't bad
@@YourWifesBoyfriendYeah that's pretty accurate, Monster is really the one drink I'll have and feel it damaging my body in real time
why?
What I've found that gives red bull is flavor is Guarana. If you've have the opportunity to drink Guarana soda, it's basically identical, and Guarana is naturally caffeinated - the color is even similar. I would venture to get that red bull is mostly naturally caffeinated and taurine is added.
Or b12
Red Bull does not contain guarana, never has. It would be declared as an ingredient.
I've definitely noticed a slight guarana flavor in red bull

This is great! I was actually discussing to a friend recently about how popular drinks like redbull would taste if homemade. I think I will give it a try.
As always, your videos are the highlight of my notifications!
It is kind of a ginger ale, but with the licorice and ginsing as well, very "root herbal" but the high caffeine, taurine, and B vitamines make it that "energy drink"
making one without the additives and reduced sugar would be nice, the sourness is also there to raise the pH so the acids kill off mold and bacteria, so you could adjust that to taste if you don't plan on it having a really long shelf life.
There’s this one channel that has this series called “Make it or Buy it, where they break down the making of common store bought items (like matcha tea, bread, etc…), and one thing they do (that I really appreciate) is they not only break down the making of the item in question, but also break down the cost, effort, and time needed to make the respective thing. It’s really cool that you were able to make Red Bull, but I can’t help but think things like “man, ginseng is so pricey” or “oh, but I really like (X) flavor”. You’ve listed the ingredients, shown the process, but haven’t discussed the price or whether the drink is worth making at home or not. I haven’t checked the video description at this time, so maybe the prices are listed there and I could just decide for myself if this is worth making, but it’s a short step of effort that would certainly be worth including IMO. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really cool that you were able to make something comparable to the original, and I might just try making it myself… assuming I don’t need to sell my soul to get some ginseng lol.
Finally, a new video! By the way, I stumbled across your Club Mate recipe, and I make it weekly, only difference is half the sugar!
Well, I don't know how Red Bull tastes in other countries, but in Brazil the taste is basically guaraná. More specifically Guaraná Antárctica.
Uma Delicia.
I like to eat the peels once the oleosacchrum (sp) is done enough. They're like little candies, as long as you didn't get too much pith when you peeled.
I remember going to a Colombian café a while ago and having basically exactly this! Candied citrus peels, it was great
My aunt used to make orange peel candy for the holidays. I remember it tasted pretty good. Not great but good.
You can get this in the Hispanic section of your grocery. Cancel or Conchita sell it in cans.
Theres a greek dessert that consists of orange peel in syrup, pretty much looks like the one in the video. You should give it a try
Where did you get the small bowl that you put all of the spices in? It’s a very similar style to one that I have.
I've been wanting to try this for years, I think this is the sign for me to finally try it, thanks! Why did you use exactly these herbs and spices? Any specific research sources or did you just guess?
I've heard that Red Bull was inspired by some kind of Indian drink and basically just commercialized for a western audience. Maybe he looked up the original and added the chemicals that are making it 'distinctly Red Bull'.
@@giratina6665The original non-carbonated Syrupy Red Bull is from Thailand 🇹🇭
The syrupy glass bottle one tastes way different than the bubbly soda can one imo
@@giratina6665 you mean Kratin Daeng? I remember hearing this a long time ago. It's actually a Thai drink, not Indian. I just read the Wikipedia page of Kratin Daeng. It literally translates to Red Bull and it was founded in 1975. They even created the Logo l with the 2 bulls. The founder of Red Bull basically stole it 1982when he visited Thailand, as far as I understand.
This is interesting. I think the clarity is from removing the pectin that comes from the fruit. Same process in mead making
Cool video. I'd like a low sugar version of RedBull. Maybe I'll try this. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Interesting vid. Nice job on the home chemistry, man! Well done!
This is so cool. I start work at 5am, so I’m a huge fan of energy drinks…Red Bull makes me gag a bit, so I think the homemade version sounds a bit better, honestly. It looks better, too! I love the idea of playing around with fruit flavors a bit, and customizing it to taste.

@@sentinel_nightcrawlerYeah I hate almost all energy drinks for the taste but red bull is really nice for me , especially with a ton of ice in it , but then again I only drink it when coming out of a hangover so what do I know
Nice info, check this out. It’s Lipovitan diluted with carbonated water. Used to get it as a kid in the Asian markets. Twenty plus years later when I tasted my first Red Bull, it was unmistakable. Red Bull stole the recipe
Nice find! Lipovitan was introduced in Thailand in the 1960s and evolved into Red Bull. A Thai businessman tweaked the taste of taurine and named the drink Krating Daeng, which translates to Red Bull. Dietrich Mateschitz developed Red Bull in Austria in 1987, based on the Thai drink.
@@adityagarg190It was called cremola foam before that.
A pharmaceutical turned into a commonplace grocery item. I heard years ago that Red Bull was tested on soldiers for enhanced stamina but they dropped it after finding that taurine was too dangerous.
Make your own, know what every ingredient can do if taken in excess...... Avoid drinking acidic stuff from aluminium can.....some big advantages 😎
Great video. I learned a lot. I am curious if it really is even remotly close to the taste of an energy drink. Your taste disciption about it somehow led me to belief that. Yet I was very surprised that in theory the ingredients feel so "natural" when you do it yourself. This feels like an recipe that you would encounter somewhere on a bazar when traveling 3rd world countries. Some roots, bullsperm and lots of sugar to sell it like lemonade. haha Now, with sugar breaking down the lemon, I finally understand the concept of lemonade. If you would have simply mixed sugar, water and lemons with eachother, you would not get such an intense taste as if you let the sugar react with the lemon first. This can make the great difference in taste. Might seem so obvious, but it still gives me joy to have learned this. Thanks.
Very informative content, everything you say carries weight - I enjoy how you include steps like reusing the strainer and orange peels for the leftover syrup - that functional transparency is appreciated

there is a taurine packet energy drink from the Philippines called EXTRA JOSS. its basically like in between an emergen c and a redbull with way more taurine flavor and very yellow. i imagine it to taste similar to this recipie
When you think about it, red bull is actually such a clever name. Red AND Bull? 🤯

I do not care what people say, RedBull is the best tasting. Ive had the pleasure of tasting some without the caffeine and other additives, and always thought it could be its own drink.
MONSTER TASTE BETTER THO
I fricken love the taste of Red Bull. It's almost refreshing.
Would be just as well if anyone left out the licorice root due to the glycyrrhizin content and potential side effects. Especially if someone decides they really like this home brew and intend to make it often.
AWESOME, i cant wait to drink litres of cafeine free redbull. Do you think it would be the same level of difficulty to recreate the flavor of the monster pipeline punch?
Looks like a lovely tonic
You can just buy liquid vitamin mixes?
How about adding citric acid? (in its synthetic form), to me when I drink Redbull I feel that sour you get on sour sweets, perhaps it could make a difference as opposed to using lemon juice.
Also another thing that came into mind is, if instead of using sugar to extract the oil from oranges you boiled the peels with the "tea" (and added sugar, Also not sure how Caffeine, Tourine and B vitamin react when boiled, so maybe you would have to add it after), you could let it boil for quite a while (~15 minutes) which would extract a lot of flavour, the downside of this would be that since you would have to use the infusion itself you would need a water carbonator, but made me wonder how it would taste.
Citric acid is made from black mould
This is rad! Would zesting the skins of the orange and masticating it with the sugar yield a clearer product?
Macerating would be a lot more hygienic.
Very interesting, a fancy tea.
Looking at the other videos here, liquid icecream, subscribing.
How long would the jar liquids last before going bad? I'd want to try this just for the flavor without caffeine and vitamins.
Would love to get your take on a Dr. Pepper recipe, the ones I've seen are a bit off the mark.
😂I definitely should’ve used gloves… and a respirator! But seriously, I love the “ready, fire, aim” approach.
Appreciated the taurine factoid I didn't know.
About making your drink clear; When I used to make wine I used to "polish" the completed wine which would result in an ultra clear bright finish. It involved using bentonite clay mixed into the wine then sieving through a cloth mesh for a first pass which would leave a bentonite residue on the cloth, takes about thirty minutes for a gallon. Then sieve a second time through the clay coated cloth and the wine becomes polished, takes several hours for the second process. The results are worth it.. Make sure there are no vinegar flies around and cover the filtration set up for hygiene though. Wine polishing kits are available online.
That explains, why i always have that sour orange-ish taste while drinking red bull. Explains alot, thanks mate.
Lol, not really. I worked in the production facility of redbull, mixing the components, and I can tell you the recipe in the video is complete nonsense lmao.
@@datarake7222oh rly? Can and would you tell what is in it?

Does it tastes good without the caffeine, taurine and b vitamin? I mean, I can do it at home with most of the ingredients except for those 3

Caffeine adds a bitter taste so it's probably gonna be overly sweet / sour without it.
Thank you, I can use this video as a drinking game by taking a shot every time you said the word "actually."
Good video. Do more of these. Dyi drinks
Thank you for making this video. I have never had Red Bull. At some point I decided that I wanted to go through life and be able to say there is one thing I've never done, and it seemed like being able to say I've never drank an energy drink was as good a choice as any. So, I've always been mildly curious what they taste like, but not curious enough to try it. Now, thanks to your video, I can imagine the taste (and also congratulate myself on my life choices haha).
Just take a sip and see what it taste like. Problem solved
Red bull tastes like a long car drive. It tastes like exhaustion, sleep deprivation and anxiety.
You're missing out
I always had the impression it was a grapefruit flaovr. Maybe try making the oleo-saccharum from Grapefruit peels instead of oranges?
Not a good idea. Grapefruit oils are very irritating. Mouth feels like it's on fire. I've tried.
You might be allergic
What other uses for oleo sacccharum?
It's good for making flavor syrups for tea, and might be good for scented oil infusions in the form of scented candles or potpourri.@@MissionSilo
Man I used to love the old Red Bull Cola that they sold for a while. I remember seeing a flyer about it and all the different herbs and spices they used, cola and clove and mustard and all this
You should try to recreate that!
I do love brewing me up a pot of ginger tea. Think i will do so now.
the sugar coated citrus peels are the best way to make the most yummy lemonades too
Redbull has a very exotic note in edibles: animalic. It tastes like the deer musk commonly used in perfumery.
What I get in redbull is vanillin, caramel, citrics and this musk as DNA (identity).
Nice! I love the unique flavor of Red Bull but I try to drink it only once every few months due to the synthetic caffeine in it. I might try this but sans caffeine
Now teach me to make Jager :) nice vid as always
This is ideal for making redbull cocktails without all of the heart-attack risk of mixing alcohol and caffeine
WE STILL HAVE SPARKS
It's less exciting without the risk and potential stroke though
Lately Ive been so much into energy drinks (RedBull and Monster), they have a certain flavour that I adore. Im not sure what it is, Ill drink this energy drinks more often if werent for their caffeine content. I just enjoy their unique flavour. Same happens to me with beer, Ive been thinking to try 0% alcohol beer, I just like its taste.
It could be the carbonic acid from the carbonated water. Try Guinness beer, it is charged with nitrogen gas instead of co2. See if the taste goes away. This is why Guinness beer has really tiny bubbles, almost creamy.
This tastes waaay better than Peter Griffins recipe.
yum I'd love to make cranberry energy drink
The ginseng was left whole when you cooked it. Try slicing or crushing the ginseng, to release more compounds. The skin is tough and papery, trapping the good part of ginseng inside.
if you try to peel the oranges lightly, so you have hardly any white stuff on the back, the drink would be way less bitter.
would adding apple juice make the flavor closer?
Taurine from what I’ve seen was used in the 80s to help break food down faster. I looked into what it was cuz health Canada doesn’t care about overdosing on these drinks.
Dont forget about the bull seamen 😂
A quick reminder, most commercially available citrus nowadays has chemicals and waxes added to the peel to extend shelf life, therefore unless you take steps to remove the chemicals beforehand, they are not safe for consumption.
Boiling it should fix that problem but yeah lots of shit on em

I'm wondering if they put even more sugar in the Red Bull that is exported to the US to adapt it for the American market.
I've never been to the US, but most people complain that there are incredible amounts of sugar in almost everything - even in savoury food.
Good job!
“Taurine doesn’t really do anything… at least clinically” uh… that’s… not accurate.
Very true. I'm guessing you already know about Taurine's synergistic effect with Caffeine. I take Taurine for other reasons but It can help reduce some of the side effects of caffeine (lie the jitters) to start with. Not to mention its role in balancing electrolytes. Taurine does so much, it's just awesome!
