- A train journey across Finland in early November going from Turku heading north to Oulu towards Lapland. It's not technically winter, but winter comes early in Finland.

HOW TO TRAVEL FINLAND | A Train Journey In The Snow
Just realized that you were kinda whispering in that train. Very rare gesture, considering any travel vlogger.
Much respect, Gabe.
we finns are quiet in public places (except if we are drunk). thanks Gabriel. :)
@@Dinariina pussified and awkward society in finland
@@Gerald69420 more like cultured and respectful
@@fuffthebucks7266 No. Most Finns appear semi if not fully autistic Far from cultured. They can just about hold down a conversation with a few drinks in them. Buncha freaks out there boy.
@@Gerald69420 I have headphones. I don't really need these cultured people.

It's a whole pizza, we don't do slices. But for 7€ they probably are skipping some taxes :)
That's a Panda Pizzeria. Went there couple weeks ago. They're definitely skipping taxes :D
Went there many years ago. No receipt.. guy just pulled a large roll of bills.
A tip on Finnish train travel. If you buy tickets online in advance you will get cheaper ones. Sometimes even significantly so.
Which website do you recommend?
@@GabrielTravelerVideos www.vr.fi The official state railroads one. You can buy the ticket from there and then select the option to pick it up from one of those ticket machines. Or have it delivered into your e-mail and then just show that QR code from that mail to the conductor with your phone.
Excellent, thanks.
Those armoured vehicles on the train might have been on their way to (or coming from) Rovajärvi, Lapland. There's the largest military shooting range and military exercise area in Western Europe, about 1100 square kilometers (425 square miles). It's mainly used by artillery and mortars, but also by tanks and other armored forces from all over Finland. They are usually transported there by train. And of course all the units in Northern Finland use the area.
I can tell you filmed this on the first Monday of a month, around noon. Because of the siren test in the background (6:15 mark).
Yep, you're right.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos They used to blare that siren every week when I was a kid. I was going to a school right next to the fire station that had the siren, it was pretty damn loud (as it's supposed to I guess...)
@@jtekholm When I was a kid our town in northern California had the noon whistle. Every day at 12 noon it would blow, loud enough that you could hear it all over town. I guess they got rid of it because I've been back there and never heard it again.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Every day?! Damn, I thought the weekly one we had was annoying enough. ;D Weird how stuff like this is phased out these days, like we wouldn't need them or whatever. Dangerous train of thought if you ask me.
@@jtekholm where I live, San Sebastian (Spain) they blow the bombing siren sound every day at noon, and actually, today was the first day in 5 years I managed to hear it from my class.
Love it. My ex-wife was from Vasa Finland and now lives in Turku. She was Swedish Speaking but also spoke Finnish, Norwegian and German. Finland is beautiful. I've been there many times. Finnish people are great.
Thanks Mate ! Do You already - or havent börjad / aloittanut / yet ?
Hey Gabe, I really enjoy your no bs vlogs. Thanks.
Excellent.
-12°C "That's really cold!" lol, come back in february
3:35, it's called the disease of Turku, replacing old characteristic buildings with functionalistic squares... you would not believe what kind of awesome buildings they tore down especially in central parts of cities to build those squares.
The train station being a good example of that
Some less central functionalist buildings usually didnt replace anything since cities were a lot smaller before 50-60s when people started to move to cities in droves.
Welcome to Finland!!
Hey Gabriel!! This is awesome, so few travel vloggers actually venture into Scandinavia so it's really nice to see you paving the way for the rest of us!! The trilingual situation in Finland is crazy!! I wish more countries were like that. Keep up the awesome work bro 👊

Nice Gabriel! Snow! ❄ thank you! Can't wait to see more of Finland! Stay safe and warm 😊❤🙏

Always great content Gab. Watched this one all the way through. Stay warm buddy.
Looks like that finnish army is finally preparing to invade Sweden!
🤣🤣🤣🔥Finally!!
Welcome to Oulu Finland,i have lived here 14 years .
One of my favourites - very atmospheric places
Great video Gabriel. I really hope to go to Finland at some point next year.
Thank you from heart Gabriel, we are traveling also with you

Thx for the tour. Finland reminds me of where I live, Canada this time of year. We're expecting the first snowfall of the season tonight.
Oulu is a Great City of KÄRPÄT OULU - Hockey ! Two Famous players - REIJO RUOTSALAINEN & JUHA WIDING - were born there ! Both made IT to NHL OILERS & KINGS !
I live in Finland, 200 km to east from Oulu and we have already 30 cm of snow.
First snowfall came about 3 weeks ago.
Wow man Im really excited for the upcoming videos. I have been curious to see what the northern parts of the nordic countries look like. I hope you can make it to Tromso!
Can't wait for a series of videos from Finland! :D
The interaction with the restaurant server was interesting.
It is good to know more about Finland... Wintertime is like living in the freezer for 6 months long... I used to live in MN and MA and I am sick and tired of the cold... Moved South make my life more meaningful. :)
The street signs you read was in Swedish!
The sign was in both languages, he read only the Swedish texts.
as always, another fantastic video; thanks Gabe! love from Beaverton Oregon
YAY FOR FINLAND!!!! I am 1/4 Finnish!
Excellent video, keep it up!
Shhhhhhhooooo............a quick PLUNGE in temps!!!!!!!! Not EVEN Dec yet!!!!!! Brave man!!!! It is all GREAT experience though! Your room for the night was a real ' oasis'!! Well done you!!! All super to see!! Thanks Gabe!.😁
Was surprised to see you in my hometown... However, for a backpacker/vlogger I wouldn’t recommend visiting Turku (Swed: Åbo) in late autumn or early winter. Sunlight hours are few and the weather is the most unpleasant then. Turku city has 190 000 pop. and with conjoining cities totals 300 000. It was the former capital of Finland, and has interesting sights like Turku Castle (built 1280) and Turku Cathedral (built 1290), also numerous annual events like Ruisrock (Finland’s biggest rock festival on Ruissalo island), the Medieval Market event with hundreds of actors and stalls, also a nice ambience around the Aura River with strand cafes, boat restaurants, etc. These (including the nearby resort town of Naantali) are of course best enjoyed in summer! Turku can also be a good departure-point for exploring the offshore 30 000 island archipelago. Am sorry your video missed the town center and areas with more scenic sights. Anyway, keep up the good work, happy travels!
Great, thanks for the info.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos PS: Much of your walking route in Turku was thru the Port Arthur district, a wooden labourers' quarters built late in the 1800s. Some have cozy inner courtyards. Locals named the district in honor of Japan's great naval victory around 1904. Ruissalo island also has a ski center featuring alpine skiing from its small mountain, if there's enuff snow in Jan-Feb. Former passenger ship SS Bore near the Castle is now Finland's largest hostel with lodgings for 280 people, also cafe, restaurant and free morning sauna. Outside Turku there are 2 main routes, a smaller and larger one (over bridges and ferries), nice for bicycle tours and camping in summer.
Yeah, the mentioned routes go over the archipelago.
Prive Eye VARES - takes care of Turku being on The Map ! Great City - that has been on 7 VARES MOVIES !
I really like the way Finland looks and feels. These buildings are simply shaped but nice to live in.
20:10 OMG. You just spilled all your travel plans to someone, who isn't even your subscriber. Her English is so good. Some people say Lapland is where Santa 🎅 is from.
Thanks for the nice video! Familiar places, greetings from a fellow traveller 🙂👍
Holly Crap!! That's really cold!!🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard Gabriel!! So cute!
Oulu looked more promising. The Air B&B was very nice and the price was excellent compared to America.
I love cold weather, so I can't wait for your next video. Thank you Gabriel!
God Bless you and take care!😊

Nice that you visited my hometown of 35 years :) have nice visit in Finland.
dude watching this just made me cold. Nice video !!!
Gabriel another good video and story, keep up the great work.
Ice and snow, feels like home
I got a chill from just watching you, cold cold place "The Great White North" yes it looks forbidding and forsaken but the genuine warmth from the waiter - a little kindness warms up the heart very nicely.

Awesome video! Keep up the good work👌
Gabriel, respect. You have a lovely friends on your travels..
Looks cool! Stay warm😃
You missed the Turku snow. The entire city now has a very small layer of snow!
You okay Patrick? FINLAND!
We have heard that in America - You cant say The F word ANYMORE ( Thanks to Metoo ) - so We are Up in Inland ! This is No Boca Raton - but some NHL & PANTHER players are from here !
Nice visit in Finland Gabriel, I live in Northern Sweden, and we are getting that arctic cold now too. Enjoy the North!
Great Gabriel. Always following you mate. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks. ✌️
your videos are awesome. thanks a lot for the vivid tips.
Thank you, Gabe!!!
The nice thing about these videos is that they not only show me where I want to go, but also where I don't. Sorry, Finland!
That lamb looked like it was on point!
Really interesting. Everything looks so clinical and efficient. But the cold!!
Mary Rose Dwyer You can come in the summer time and it’s not cold.
Warm clothes are selling like Hot Cakes !
Oh wow! I live in Finland!
While in the north check out Tornio/Haparanda! A city that is part in Finland, part in Sweden, with the border right in the middle of a central square! Yes, Finland is bilingual, about 5% of Finns (Finnish Swedes) speak Swedish as their native language. In some cities like Jakobstad and Karleby the local majority speaks Swedish as their native language, also there is an entirely Swedish speaking autonomous, self-ruling archipelago just west of Turku, the Åland Islands. Turku has the only Swedish speaking university in the world outside of Sweden.
Your vids are gold.
6:13 tells me this is filmed at 12 exactly. :P
Air raid sirens in the background.
Generals Danger Signal ? Could You tell / Open little more ? Thanks
Different from your usual but it's really interesting, thanks Gabriel and Enjoy your trip to Lapland it'll be amazing if you get to see the Northern lights 😁 take it easy
Welcome, Brother!
I'm from Oulu! It's a pretty unique city, this video made me a bit homesick
Very good info to know about ABNB. Thanks.
I don't live in Turku, but I used to visit a friend there who lived in one of the houses you filmed at the beginning. What a funny feeling to see you walking the very same street.
Great video. Enjoy your snowy adventure to Rovaniemi and Tromso. Both are supposed to be beautiful and hopefully you get to view the amazing Aurora borealis.
Welcome to Finland :)
The trains would be half the price if you booked a saver ticket in advance.
Thanks for the info.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Yep. There is a huge difference in train ticket prices. From Turku to Oulu can cost 59-96 euros. Depends on the time the train leaves and if you have had booked it in advance.
Cheapest "budget ticket" I found Turku->Oulu was only 25 euros :)
Or take a bus, tickets are online and if lucky you get discount ticket and its only 5 or 10€ from Oulu to Rovaniemi
Gabe, you should think about going to Svalbard, since you plan on going to Tromso already. Now that would be interesting.
"It's the kid's area... Oh, great" 😅😁😅
Fantastic video. I have subscribed to you. I love Finland 🇫🇮
Åland Islands in the summer if you plan on checking out some cool Finnish archipelago and a chill summer paradise. Just a tip from a local islander :) Great videos dude!
Beautiful country Finland.
Really interesting video Gabe. I was surprised you wanted to "experience winter" because you normally don't enjoy the cold. But 5 degrees!! Ouch!! You are correct to bring out the fact that all the buildings are square! I had to laugh....never have seen an entire community with square buildings!! Too bad too, cuz it takes away from the beauty of the place. That was an interesting bit of news about the waitress! Looking forward to your next video (happy you had a chance to just relax and hang with a friend!).
What a nice jorney. Inspirational. I hope to visit Helsinki, Turku and Oulu someday. I am broke now.
Gabriel, my brother, excellent observation at 8:45. That was St. Michael's Church, built in 1905. Travel on!
Awesome!
Fantastic Video Gabe, looking forward to your next adventure. Could I suggest Haarlem, in Holland?
Been there actually, cool town: czcams.com/video/Tlqrd3mdNPY/video.html
Holy cow, you were actually in my home town O.O Hope you enjoyed your stay (:
LOL I used to live upstairs that restaurant u went! ..Didn't expect to see u on that spot after watching your vids for a couple of years;D ..Oulu is cold asf cause of the winds from the sea at winter time grr..
I prefer east side of Finland for it's landscape; The whole west side is flat up until Rovaniemi while the east u have hills and a lot of lakes..
No way, that's hilarious.
Got curious who travels from Turku to north in November ;) I did my army service in Oulu, in winter, haven't ever returned :P In Lapland the tourist season starts in December when the British "Santa" tourists arrive. Yeah Finns travel to Turkey, Spain, Greece, Thailand etc a lot, to escape the cold season.
Tervetuloa! Have fun while in Finland. I live in Seinäjoki, Finland.
Very very nice ! one for my books ;-)
Tromso is a lovely little town. But you need a snowsuit for that kind of weather (especially if going out at night to see the lights - lot of waiting around in the freezing cold❄). You can take a short flight to Longyearbyen (gateway to the Arctic) from Tromso. Definitely reccommend👍
We here in south Florida are expecting a cold front on Friday, it will be 29 Celsius during the day and 22 at night, yep, it's cooling down here, LOL.
Hang in there, make sure you have a t-shirt handy!
The Funny thing is that some Finnish Ice Hockey players play down there ! I mean Sunny Florida ! Boca Raton & Tampa !
I don't live in Turku but nearby in the rural area, I find that more interesting (as well as the sea, lake and woods) more than densely populated cities. The city is very useful when you can just catch a bus every half an hour for a 15 min drive and get what you need. As you said it, it's functional. I'd say it's far more interesting in a fair summer weather what comes to events.
Swedish is spoken only in some parts of western Finland. Not at all everywhere. Also street names etc are solo in Finnish in other places. Most Finns hate learning swedish.
Swedish is also spoken along the south shoure here. I speak swedish and live in a town where almost everyone speaks it called Ekenäs between Helsinki/Helsingfors and Turku/Åbo. Sad to hear that finns don't like it. It's the opposite for me, I'm only 15 and learning finnish in school and that ain't fun either becouse it's so hard. Kind of messy that we have two languages here.
Jonathan Lindroos true but it’s southwest city anyway.. how can you guys call yourselves finnish if you dont speak it?
@@Danaani We are born and living in Finland! And we can speak finnish too, just not me yet couse I'm so young. It's written in the law that this country has two official languages. Isn't that enough to call us finns? Besides, the swedish we speak hear is pretty different from what they speak in Sweden. We use many finnish words like: kiva, karkki, kaveri osv...
Jonathan Lindroos yes technically u are finnish but imo every finn should speak their native tongue, screw that ancient law, i consider you as finnishsvensk and not pure finns
Danaani okay ultranationalist😂😂 also in porvoo/sipoo etc. so not just the west. I’m completely Finnish and i don’t really agree with this dude.
Lol, my previous bands singers joint, that Cafe and Burger!
You chose pretty good restaurant. There's some good food there.
Great vlog Sir
Thanks.
Well you got your wish for cold weather!
Well, if you came for the cold you were lucky haha. It's unusually cold for this time of the year, even though winter does come early here. Anyhow, enjoy your stay! Cheers from Helsinki
I see, I was wondering. It's pretty brutal for November it seems. It's 5F in Rovaniemi right now and it's only 5pm.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Damn that's cold, hang in there!
Thanks again Gabe.just to think I call the UK cold.🤣🤣
So, I was right, when guessing Finnland.:) Tampere, for example, would be more fun to go to. Baltic countries, Scandinavia are stunning during summertime, but, it seems, you are interested to explore winter over there. Yes, there are still all 4 seasons in Northern Europe, but the weather has become more unpredictable during last decade also here and you never know what to expect. It can be a week over +30C during the summer season, then the next week temperature is dropping half, snow in May, rain in Christmas etc.p.s. just noticed that you probably are coming to Norwegian North Tromsø, no there are no trains going over there also in Norway. We use mainly local plains to come to Tromsø, but I noticed that cheaper to go from Oslo to Tromsø was through Riga Latvia...he,he than to take a domestic flight. Cheers from Norway!
weather has always been unpredictable in Finland, nothing has changed even they try to say so.
Very nice video
Who goes to Northern Finland sees that it is 9 degrees and says I need to explore further North ? Gabriel Traveler Excellent video !

@@duffysullivan2794 Yes I am looking forward to the video.

Holy cow, you went by a lot of fierce-looking tanks on the train ...... such good commentary throughout your video. I was surprised places were still open when you got to Oulu, a city of 200K with beautiful women living in hammocks, who would've thunk it? You were talking Tromso but, aw man, you're so close to Murmansk and your potential Russian-speaking colab travel brother, Bald, is a scant 7-1/2 hour plane ride away in Chechnya.
WOW... That's a first... it took a whole 4 minutes to see the first person in the video.. other than Oceana... Talk about being too cold to go outdoors.. Booking dot com is the way to go.. and you know you have the room. That train looked pretty cool... Wow that place is way too cold... Stay safe & Warm Gabe.. :)
