Important note about train tickets: You can't buy tickets from the train, so you have to buy them before you board the train.
Finland is one of my bucket lists🛫
When ever you're ready to come, welcome 😊
We had good experiences with trains in Finland this summer. We took the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and it was super comfortable. Left at 11pm and arrived around 11am. The bunk beds were surprisingly comfortable! Also, we took the train when we first arrived at the airport to downtown Helsinki, and we even arrived in the early morning hours. Thank you again for the video.
Never get tired of your finnish episodes ;)
Upstairs in the Dining car is great on VR.
Oh its "karjalanpiirakka" with "munavoi" on top 😋
Munavoi is just eggs and butter smashed together
My niece and her family has lived in Helsinki for 5 years. If they could they said they would live there forever. Her kids go to an international school. Since living their I think they said they have been to 38 countries so far. They also have been to quite a few of their favorite countries several times different areas.
Mark, your enthusiasm really makes these videos so interesting.
absolutely loved the sleeper train from Tampere to Rovaniemi.
Welcome to Finland=funland.
Good video , thanks for sharing !
Thanks as usual for your travel videos. They are so helpful and fun to watch.
Stay well, safe, and happy!
Nice Video ,Stay safe and well.
Really beautiful country and safest country, Thanks for provide trains 🚆 travel Information.
Liked it! Lots of helpful things to know. You can see what a civilized country Finnland is from the trains. Cheers
Thanks for useful infos
Looks fun! Having just been to Germany, I still love it but burned out with same sites. Need to expand my horizons!
Generally very interesting, but surely you should have mentioned that if you are doing a lot of train travelling in Finland you should buy an Interrail pass. According to the current European Rail Timetable a first class 8 days in one month pass costs 305 Euros.
Well, VR's 1 month holiday ticket would probably be cheaper still
I m from india.find ur vlogs informative always.
good stuff!
i'll be going from helsinki to rovaniemi on the night train next sunday, can't wait to try out the sleeper carriage.
in the video where you mention the red houses, often those houses were railway workers'
houses. Today vr has sold those houses, they are no longer inhabited by railway workers. The houses are recognizable by their red color and they have a certain style, usually a small window that is set in a certain way. Time stamp in the video : 6.28
Red houses still are and also used to be highly popular because the colour was easy to get from hematite and other iron oxides. The pigment has been in use since the stone age. It's undoubtedly one of the first paints with a striking colour that common people could afford to use. What you mostly see from a train is wilderness or countryside. Red houses are everywhere. It's not specific for VR. In fact VR very much like to use yellow paint as well.
Thank you so much for uploading these videos! I m actually heading to Finland in about 2 weeks ! I’m staying in Helsinki but do you recommend atleast a day trip to Turku?
Yes! Mark lived in Turku...we have a few vids on it. ;) it is a lovely town.
@@WoltersWorldEats thank you ! I’ll plan a trip to it as well
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not every city/municipality/place has a Swedish name. Most do not. Primarily places (not all) in the Western parts of Finland do have.
Haha we always joke about how the trains are always late and how the wifi in them is the worst
I was just wondering if you can take a train from hilsinki to budapest or Vienna if so, how long, how much and what train. Pls needs some travel train information. Thanks
Love the masks on the statues at 5:57!
They are actually also used as the mascots of the railway. Like they are originally just the door guardian statues of the Helsinki central railway station called simply "the lantern bearers". However like couple decades ago VR realised "hey these figures make for good official mascots". So now they are the "The stone men", the official mascots of VR. They appear as animated characters in VR ads, information videos and VR timetable prints and various pamphlets. Also the statues get regularly specially dressed for various occasions. Stuff like during big sporting events they sport Team Finland scarfs or shirts.
During pandemic, well VR instituted policy of wearing masks on the trains. So the Stone Men also wear masks to remind and encourage mask wearing. I think they also did an PSA video in the beginning of pandemic of animated Stone Men reminding people to care for fellow passengers and train staff by wearing masks.
My husband's family is from Finland. We will visit there soon. What is the best time of year?
Finnish winter is nice. And the summer is great too!
And this is coming from a Finnish person
As generally in northern Europe, summer usually is the best time to visit Finland. Light summer nights, the locals are more active, all kind of activities available. Finland looks rather different in the dark winter months:)
Usually late July you have the best chance of catching good weather.
July is the best time to go Finland. Theres ”Juhannus” aka midsummer, the best holiday in Finland. Everyone should experience it
@@MrOzzku100 July is propably the best time to visit. However, juhannus or Midsummer is celebrated in June not in July.
I've lost count of the times I've gone through Helsinki Airport and had to explain to some poor tourist that yes, "Helsinki Helsingfors" is the main railway station...
👏👏👏👏👍👍👏👏👏👏
I and P-train goes to the airport every 10 minutes
I'm early
If you have only cash how to buy tickets is there simply buy tickets?
I think you can buy tickets with cash at R-kioskis. Also you could use ticket offices, but there’s very few besides one in Helsinki central station.
5:35 referencing train service in the US is a low bar. Not only are they regularly running late but, the carriers for many of the services really don’t have much regard for on-time performance. (I.e.: Amtrak, NJ Transit)
Great presentation though. Thank you.
Well, most of pur viewers are American so it helps to give a reference they know personally.

Were you in Finland 94-95 with Rotary?
Yep
You roasted the nerds who think they'll get a bad place in second class 2:04
Only problem is, at least in my mind is... Why on earth should anybody in their right mind wish to"visit" Finland of all places? Why? WHY? What for? How about the Sahara for a change, huh? Or the Antarctica? Huh? Know what I mean? Although with Jocelyn along, well... Finland being a pretty cold place... Know what I mean?... Yeah, well... I do know what I mean! Do you, mate?
🤡
@@petejoki I guess you do know what I mean, huh? But then we'd never have time to see much of Finland, would we... But who'd be sorry anyway? ☺
Okay I have to say something. You use the word SUPER way too much. Even a Valley Girl wouldn't use it as much as you do. Otherwise it's fine but please, keep the supers to a minimum!
