  • How to identify which board is causing the Plasma TV problem - How to Fix Plasma TVs
Click Here for Plasma TV Parts: www.shopjimmy.com/catalogsearc...
This video is designed to be a guide for testing and troubleshooting your TV repair. Please note that other complications may exist that aren't addressed in this guide. While we always strive to provide accurate and detailed information, we can't guarantee that it will fix your TV's issues.
We are going to take a look at the different boards on the back of the plasma TV and describe what each board is responsible for and the common problems or symptoms that can be shown by a TV and which is most likely responsible for those problems and symptoms.
So, the first part we are going to look at is the power supply which is right here. The power supply takes in and distributes power throughout the TV. This board is either directly connected to your AC power cord or is connected to the AC adapter. Some common problems that can happen with your power supply, is that you have a dead set or your TV does not turn on and you have no standby at all, then you know that you are not getting any power to the TV. You could have a situation where you do have standby, but you can't get the TV to turn on. That could also be caused from your power supply. You could have a bad power supply also if your fuse blows. This power supply has a few different fuses.
The main board which is located over here typically manages your accessory inputs and outputs and houses the TV tuner. So this is what sends the signal from your HDMI ports, your RCA connectors, your VGA input, all your different inputs go through here and are connected elsewhere to get the picture on the screen.
If the set in total resets on its own with you doing anything, it could be your main board that is causing that. If you are having issues with the video on the screen it could be a connection here or the main board is not allowing you to have the full resolution or clear image. Again if any of these inputs don't seem to be working with your TV it could be a bad connection here.
The y-sustain, which is located right here can also be called a y-sus board, a y-main board, and an SC board. So the y-sustain here, connects your PDP assembly through a buffer system most commonly known as a y-buffer or y-scan drive. Which is right here. Some common symptoms of a bad y-sustain, the TV shuts down and power cycles. That would be your TV turns off, and then turns back on again and then turns back off and such. So its running through a power cycle. If you have no picture on the screen, this could also be the y-sustain or if you have a dark picture on the screen. If you have a flashing screen with shadowy sections, this could be the y-sustain. If your TV makes a popping noise, which is usually quite loud and then you have no picture on the screen, this could be caused from the y-sustain.
So, the y-buffer can also be known as a y-scan drive. This y-buffer again is what connects the y-sustain to the panel. These orange colored connections right here are built into the actual TV panel and are what connect to the y-buffer. So if you have a problem with any of these ribbon cables here, they will not be repairable as they are connected right into the panel.
A common symptom of a bad y-buffer board is if you have black horizontal lines running across your entire screen. They would run from one side to the other.
Over here we have the x-sustain board. Common terms for the x-sustain board is x-sus, x-main, z-sus, z-sustain and SS board. Common symptoms that your TV is showing that could be the z-sustain is you will typically have a picture of some kind on the screen, but it tends to look very red or purpley, the picture could be very dark and flash a little bit, you could be getting slow-motion effects on the TV as the panel isn't charging and discharging pixels correctly. So that can be some common problems that could be your x-sustain.
Next we are going to take a look at the logic board. This board can also be referred to as the main logic control board, the control board and the logic main. The logic board is connected to the main board and address buffers, via flat-ribbon cables and can sometimes be hidden underneath the main board.

Thanks Jimmy for actually inviting us to ask you Q's! This video is great, and after watching it I believe I may know which board I need to replace, but wisdom says I should lay it out before you as well, for your input.
My tv is a Panasonic Viera 65" Model # TC-P65GT50 (manuf in May 2012)
the problems started after a freakingly powerful rainstorm blew up suddenly here in the midwest. the living room window was open and the side of the tv that has the main board was approx 12" from the open window, and the back of the tv got doused breifly with rain blowing in the window.
Symptoms mainly affect what is happening on screen. we can be watching Cable or our Amazon FireTV stick, and suddenly out of the blue, the TV MENU graphics will pop up (as if I had pressed the MENU button on the remote), or the INPUT graphics will pop up on the screen (as if I had pressed the INPUT button on the remote), or the MANUAL CONTROLS graphics will pop up on screen (as if I had pressed on of the manual control buttons [PWR, VOL +/-, CHANNEL +/-] located on the lower right side of the unit. When these events happen, I often lose control of the unit with the remote, but sometimes the remote will still work (although rarely). When the INPUT graphics appear, it looks like a toddler has gotten hold of the remote because different inputs appear to be selected in rapid succession. Sometimes the remote is not able to control the TV, and sometimes I can 'fight throught it' with the remote and go back to the input that I want to watch. When the remote goes dead, I have to get up and physically turn off the unit with the manual power button. We can for for a long time (guessing 45 mins?) without a problem, or it can happen multiple times in a single minute. This has be going on for maybe 3 weeks. When it first started, sometimes the volume on the unit would just start increasing by itself, reaching mas vol in say 5 seconds or so. this does not happen anymore.
So, what do you think? Do you think the rain fried some component on the main board?

Great tutorial, My 60 inch Samsung Plasma started putting a thin bright green vertical line down the screen about 8 inches from the right side edge. I was bummed out and was looking for a new LED TV, I got used to the great blacks that Plasma TV's have and really didn't want to spend around $2500 for a OLED TV that have great blacks.
Found your posting and you described the symptom my plasma is having so I am taking a chance and ordering a Main Logic control board off of ebay, was only $15 so no big deal if it doesn't fix it.Thank you for the very informative post.

I really appreciated that you haven't taken older videos down. I have a, Samsung 5 Series plasma. Been going strong 12 years. A couple of months ago I got the occasional popping sound but everything was fine on screen. Recently i get kind of messy looking flashes or overlays on the right side (looking at the TV) which were just flashes to start with but are getting more frequent and staying longer. Its like a whitish cloud or puddle tinged red, very grainy and with evenly spaced dark horizontal lines.
So according to this video I have both boards gone? X AND Y? Because in another of your videos you ascribed all those symptoms to the Y board alone (unless I misunderstood).

Hi. Really informative channel. Glad I found it and subscribed.
I have a Samsung 50” plasma about 15 years old. Recently the screen has started to periodically go black but I can still hear sound. If I unplug it for several minutes, the picture comes back one. It does this every few days. The tv doesn’t have to be on for a long time for this to happen. I noticed it is also a little warmer that it used to be when I walk by it. The model number is HPT5034YX/XXA. Thank you very much in advance

Thank you for this - here is how I successfully used this knowledge to fix my Philips (Samsung boards) TV. From the description of faults, I suspected the X and/or Y sustain boards. There was a picture, but it had an out of range color stripe and was grainy. Fault happened while watching and there was a burning smell. TV continued to work somewhat. When I looked at the X and Y sustain boards, I could see some bulged capacitors - they were all 82uF at somewhere around 312-350 volts. Between the boards, there were about 18 of them. There were a couple of other bulged capacitors. I removed them and measured ESR ( a good way to tell if a capacitor is bad). Turns out on these Samsung boards, those 82uF capacitors have almost ALL failed; only 2 of 18 showed ESR anywhere near acceptable. Now, if I were to just replace the boards, I'd be getting boards just as old with capacitors just as old. Ordering new caps from DigiKey cost about $60, and I replaced all of the 18 82uF, plus about 6 others, 4 of which were not even bad. TV is perfect now. Summary: many of the capacitors in your sets are probably at end of life, and if you look closely, you will see visual signs of this (bulging at the top). You may find, as I did, that a ton of your caps were bad, and replacement is inexpensive, and a much better option than buying old boards with the same, old caps....

Hello, you mentioned that you might be able to help with an issue. I have a 2008 AVP504 Sanyo 50 inch. Way back the top of the video became dark but we could see the bottom half of the picture. Well of course not long after the bottom half did the same and away it went into storage. Been sat there, inside, warm comfortable, and ir is now that I have time and inclination to fix this bad boy. Any suggestions as to the cause and how to proceed? Thanks so much!

I guess this is quite an old video bit hopefully I can get a response. My TV model is an LG Plasma 42PT350-UDACCLLHR. We were playing a game and the TV shut itself off. No loud pops or anything like that. The standby light is on and when we try powering it on it sounds like its going to start up but then shuts itself off again and goes back into standby. From your video it could be the ysus or power supply? Just wondering if its worth fixing or just buying a new TV.

Jimmy, I have a question about a Lg Plasma in a 60 inch model LG PB6650., the television was working during a thunderstorm and it shut down during this time, the standby light is working correctly and when powered up it goes off which is normal, also the screen will display a dark picture to lighter shade for a second at that tie it will power off and automatically back on by itself all the tie the screen is continuing to be black. I have replaced the power board and that did effect the time the lighting on the screen is lighting up more briefly till it powers back down and back on again by itself. Could you or would you suggest what the problem could be?

Thank you for the video. We purchased our 42" Samsung Plasma HDTV in late 2006 and has given us flawless service since that time. I have it connected to a TrippLite HP1000 UPS for a seamless AC Source and power down. Just in the past week I have noticed that the TV has a grainy appearance during power up, and has a slow pulsating appearance with the grainy picture and it all goes away after about 1 minute after power up. No other issues. The picture is good without any lines or abnormalties. The model number is HPS 4253X/XXA S/N B15G3CNLB08739; Mfg Date Nov 2006

I have an LG plasma TV model: 50PC3D When turned on with the power button the screen displays a dark black and grey snowy image with a kind of black hole in the middle of the screen. There are vertical lines present and the screen seems to strobe as if it is surging. This is my first TV repair but based on the info learned in your video seems likely the logic board will need to be replaced? Your feed back would be appreciated as I am going to wait on ordering any parts until i get a response. Also I live in Alberta Canada and also would like suggestions on a cost effective yet quality source to order parts from? Thank you and happy holidays to all.

When it first appeared the lines would disappear after the TV warmed up for a few minutes but now they don't go away. Panisonic Plasma TC-50S2 - Powers on and 2 to 3 seconds later the power supply clicks off and give a 10 flash code. The screen does not power on during the 2 to 3 seconds before shutting off again. I have disconnected both the SS board and SC board together and single, and the power supply continues to click off within 2 to 3 seconds. The power supply board (ETX2MM806AEL) looks okay from a visual inspection of the components resistors, capacitors, and so on. I've done some in circuit testing (I know in circuit isn't proper readings) and not finding anything that gives me any issues to look further into. I do not currently have an ESR meter to test the caps in circuit, otherwise I will be removing the caps to test off the board. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

SP-P4251, sound goes out after an hour. Back on if turned off after 10 mins, then goes out again after some time etc... main board? logic board? power board(caps)? The caps all look fine, in fact it's a refurbished power board. I bought it to fix the black screen issue, worked like a charm. The sound was working fine too. The sound issue came about a few months later. I tried ordering a new main board (the one that has the sound chip on it, texas chip) still had the same issue. What do you think? Someone said it was the sound chip overheating. Can a heat sink be put on it and actually fix it?

The screen has several vertical green lines which have developed in greater numbers over past years. It is an LG Plasma TV model 50PK590 -EZ. I know this is an older post but you seem to know what you are doing and your methed of explanation is very clear. I have a PN51D550C with the following sypmtoms------ Runs 3 Power cycles with relay clicking when plugged in. Will not power on when power button pressed so no picture and no stand-by led. X-SUS replaced for it blew output transistors yet, it did not correct the problem. When Either X or Y boards are disconnected the power cycle stops. What is strange is the power cycle stops when either one of the X, Y boards are disconnected. With both connected, cycling continues for 3 attempts and then tv goes quiet. PS Stops cycling with both disconnected or just one of them connected and does not matter which one is connected just as long as both are not connected. Hard to diagnose a prob with the x or y boards when neither one individually connected causes the power cycle. All voltage output from the PS match and hold what is printed on the board next to each connector. There are no bulged or oozing caps, no burned or discolored areas on any of the boards and no popped fuses on the PS. The logic board "heart beat" LED has a slow and long blink pattern when XSUS and YSUS boards are disconnected and TV when both are re-connected. There is no longer a stand-by led with any pattern of connected boards and the power LED blinks 3 times rapidly when power is pushed with no power on or clicks.(heat sensing buttons not hard buttons on this model) I love this tv and hope to fix it. I do have some knowledge of circuitry but lack the indepth knowledge of how each of the individual components communicate with one another.

Hello. I have a plasma Samsung PN50a400c2d manufactured in 2008. The tv wasnt used that much over the years. I have a section approximately 4 inches wide that is either solid black or colored vertical lines from top to bottom. I have replaced the logic board in center of tv and also the input board. I have had times where it will go away but once powering off and back on, it reappears. One ribbon cable on the center logic board connects to what I assume is a backlight board that goes across the bottom of tv. I have reseated and cleaned the ribbon cable ends. I currently have a ribbon cable ordered. I removed and swapped ends of the ribbon cable but lines remained and in the exact same place. I am not sure if the backlight board (I assume that is the board) can be replaced. Hoping issue with the ribbon cable but dont want to keep replacing parts without decent chance of it resolving problem. Any suggestions? Thank you!!!!
