  • I am not a Tv repair man but this is how I fixed a 60" LG Plasma Tv Model # 60PZ550. The tv didnt show a picture on the screen or didnt have any sound but later after fixing it I found the internal speaker was turned off in the settings. I ended up changing most of the Transistors/Mosfets and the fuse. I did manage to change 1 IC chip but dont think I needed to. I will also say that a few days after the repair that I probly didnt do a very good job at soldering the IC chip and the tv started showing a bunch of lines on the screen and then went blank. So I rechecked my work and replaced the IC chip once more and also 1 mosfet that must have burned out from the IC chip that wasnt soldered great and then the Tv continued to work.

    I've been searching CZcams for a video on how to ID MOSFETs that may be shorted to ground to fix my old 2010 Zenith LG Z50P J240 Plasma TV. Looks like I've found it! Thanks for making technical information understandable. I'm officially giving you an honorary teaching certificate for your simplistic teaching methods. After 40 years of teaching as an educator in public education, I think I can officially bestow this honor on you. Thanks for the information and continue using your knowledge to help others.

    You're not a TV repair man, you're a knowledgeable electronic technician with good all around troubleshooting skills. Several "TV repair men" here who don't have the skills to do component level repairs. As an I and E tech, we call them part changers. They'll keep throwing other people's money at the problem until it works. Great job! Thanks!

    Hey man! Thanks for the video, lots of good information. Thought I'd provide some pointers in soldering/desoldering for future repairs. For IC's you should always add a small amount of fresh leaded solder to the pins to make it 10 times easier and faster to remove with the hot air. Also, you should avoid cutting leads after soldering onto board. The leads should always be cut to size BEFORE soldering as cutting afterwards *could* cause a bad solder joint either immediately or in the future due to the force applied when cutting.

    This video combined with another where the TV was fixed just by re-soldering most of the connections helped encourage me to try re-soldering the connections on my LG60PN6500 and saved me $200 for a replacement YSUS board. My only major mistake was using contact cleaner to remove the flux which left a white film everywhere. Lots of brushing with rubbing alcohol, a toothbrush and t-shirt scraps cleaned that up. One challenge I have as one who rarely does component repair is finding a good source for transistors, capacitors, resistors, etc. Maybe you could recommend some good sources? From one retired ANG E&E aircraft tech to another, thank you!

    We have a non profit recycle outfit here, they only make runs every few months, I asked for the TVs, they said no, they must make sure they get recycled and not thrown in the landfill. If I fix it and resell it it won't, if they recycle it some of it will. People here make a living from fixing electronics, they feel fine stepping on our living.

    Hi great video! My question is in regards to the mosfets. Some Y board and power board mosfets also show that they’re grounded. Would they also play a part in ‘no picture’ and also be changed?

    • @AveRage_Joe
      @AveRage_Joe  Před 4 lety

      Yeah its possible. Also some will show grounded while in the circuit board but once unsoldered will show normal. It does that when some are really bad but I usually replace them anyway since I had them removed.

    There is a really cool product called Chip-Kwik that makes desoldering IC's a snap. It is a small quantity of a solder-like alloy that transforms each joint into a low melting point amalgum. The slightest bit of heat melts it and the chips just slide off with no damage. When you want to install a new chip, you have to use solder wick to remove the amalgum, then put fresh solder on all the lands and solderwick that off too. If you don't do this dilution step the slightest heat will melt your new solder.

    LG 60PA5500 here: Takes many attempts to turn on, the red led blinks twice each time it tries to turn on. Sometimes it takes 20 tries, the other night around 100. I leave it "on" with dark screen, sound is coming out. Then I reach over top and unplug and replug power cord until screen turns on after the relay click. When it's on it stays on until we turn it off. Do you know what 2 red blinks mean?

    Great Video. Inspired me to try to fix my LG50PT350. Looks to have almost Identical Boards. The Symptom is that it Clicks to come on and stays on and energized. No Click back off like the one in your video. The Main symptom visually is the screen attempts to light up but all RED. Then it goes blank again. It repeats the red screen then blank over and over. You can power it off with the button to stop this behavior. Turn it back on does the same thing again. Do you have any insight into this?

    My then 2011 top of the range LG Plasma TV finally failed yesterday (nearly 13 years daily operation). I want to try to fix it. Here are the symptoms: about four days ago the TV just switched itself off. When I turned it on there was no screen. I tried to get it going but I could not. The red light near the switch would turn to blue and the noise of switching on was still there (and the noise of switching off). Then I switched the TV from the socket (from the plug) and waited say one hour. Then it would work but after a while switch itself off. Yesterday it worked all day and then suddenly at night it switched itself off. No effort at getting it to go back on gave results. I remember we switched it off for an hour from the socket (from the plug on the wall) and then it came back but only for 5 minutes and switched itself off. So we played some card games to pass the time last night. This morning at 7 am I went down and switched the plug and then it went on and I was watching TV as normal. Then after 5 minutes or so it cut out again and I could not bring it back. What do you think is the problem?

    Hey Joe, you should try eu·tec·tic /yo͞oˈtektik/ solder for your repairs.
    This is an electronic rosin core solder, it's TRUE claim to fame is no solder 'plastic' state. A 60/40 soldier has a period between solid and melted, known as the 'plastic' state. The more metal in the connection, the longer the solder may stay in the plastic state. This can be frustrating and often results in a dull connection, or one that looks like a bead on a pin (convex). A good solder connection should be shiny and have a concave curve from pin to the pad, more solder is NOT better.
    Eutectic solder is 63 / 37, and when hot enough goes directly from solid to a liquid state WITHOUT entering a plastic state. Provides a more consistent and reliable connection, with fewer browning of the PCB material from prolonged contact with the iron.
    Just thought you might check it out, if your not using it currently.

    So my TV was having this problem where it wouldn't turn on like yours. So I tried testing the heat since mosfets or whatever they are, and it threw a spark, now it doesn't want to turn on at all. What did I do wrong? What setting is my multimeter supposed to be on? I had it on DC

    Loved your video! I have a Samsung 50-inch 720p plasma tv, mod# PN50C450. It has a colorful snowy picture that sometimes flashes on/off. Sometimes the pic is perfect, but will then deteriorate to snowy. I tried a dvd input, with the same results. It is definitely something wrong with the tv. Any suggestions on what I might try to replace?

    I have an LG 50PC3D with sound, but no video. The screen blinks on and off, with no video. I replaced the YSUS & ZSUS, plus POWER Supply and Main Video board from a working TV that had cracked screen. I still have the same problem. Not sure what to try next. The buffer board is the next possible suspect, or not. This board has unusual ribbon joints, not sure how to remove without breaking. ny suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

    YO JOE!!
    Dude... some pointers (IF you want them and in case you don't know!!!)
    Generally, Plasma Tv's don't actually have MOSFETS on the driver boards. As a general rule mostly they're not transistors at all and are actually two way (three pin) rectifier diodes for the various power supplies on the sustain boards. Also, the ones that are transistors are generally IGBT type so when testing you need to treat them more like BJT's then MOSFETS. (might clear up some strange readings)
    It's best to lift one leg of the fuse to test it out of circuit. The reason they're "lying" to you is the tank capacitors at the start of the board. The meter will bleeep for as long as it takes for the meter to charge the tank caps up to the same potential as the meter's "measurement voltage", then the current stops flowing and the "continuity" is no more!
    AWESOME VIJAYOH brother!!! The more people start repairing things at a board level (since the repair industry has been pushed out by the chinese pumping out shitty electronics that are cheap and don't last) the LESS CHEAP SHIT ELECTRONICS ends up in land fill.
    Program Rant;
    Uses NoProfanity, CommonSense;
    var purchaser, brandname : String;
    TVworks : Boolean;
    begin
    If purchaser = "buy cheap from china!!"
    and if brandname = "cheapest available parts from one hung low market"
    then while TVworks = 'true'
    purchaser = "be happy, enjoy!"
    else if TVworks = 'false'
    then purchaser = "MUST HAVE REPAIRED" or "MUST REPAIR THEMSELVES"
    else purchaser = "pay's HEAVY taxes for the disposal of CHEAP E WASTE"
    end;
    end.

      Awesome! Love learning new stuff! Thanks Man!!!! I remember seeing IGBT when looking up parts but then for some reason transistor or mosfet stuck in the brain lol. Hey joe, I have this exact tv. I recently moved it to a new house. It switched on, picture was slightly snowy for a while then it turned off. Very hot around the ysus and a loud buzzing. I checked the ysus for cracked solder like you showed with the zsus but nothing wrong. I can’t find a repair kit for the ysus - would buying a replacement board be fine or too risky that it is something else as well?
    I’ve also been told the power points in this old house may be dodgy but the tv has its own protections against that?
    Any help appreciated!

    Awsome video. My top 2 fet pins on the black heat sink are grounded. On the board they are connected to ground through a bunch of filter components maybe? On the far right heat sink(around 4:45ish), you said top 3 center pins are grounded, mine are not. All the top legs of the lower group of fets on that sink are though and are direct to ground on the board traces too. I cannot figure out which fets are bad(without removing them all). Voltage to the board is good. My fuse reads good also. Any advice?

    • @AveRage_Joe
      @AveRage_Joe  Před 4 lety

      Sounds like at least a few fets are grounded. When I removed all mine and tested them out of the board not all were bad but I replaced them all since they were out. Only way to know for sure is to have a in circuit tester or remove fets and test.

Those top 3 on the right heat sink were grounded on yours and not on mine which I can't figure out at all. • @AveRage_Joe

      Its been a while since I did my repair but guessing its most likely a few fets on yours too. If those are not shorted like mine then they should be ok. Did you check them all and are any shorted to ground?

      Then the lower group of fets on the far right have a grounded top pin on all but that is correct it seems they are direct to ground that way on the board. I'm still confused why my center pins on the top 3 fets on the far right are not grounded as yours were and you said they should be.

      You have not yet found your intermittent problem. You replaced a board that was not bad, and then just got lucky the T V started, sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, and it just did when you started it after replacing that board.
