I honestly think they overextended themselves on hiring. They hired a bunch of friends and family and they don’t want to downsize. The staff is bloated and now they have to make an excuse to keep them around. “High quality production” relates directly to who they hired.
Completely agree, way too many employees and that’s their own fault
The first thing to do when a company is struggling is 'trim the fat' and focus on the core of what made you a success in the first place.

They deserve credit for actually walking everything back. This is one of the very few times where it truly is just a poor decision and not them turning out to be abusive PDF files who cheat on their wives.
The exclusive content will no doubt still happen. They are just waiting for people to forget. They likely had this walk back planned before the first announcement.

Don't give them too much credit, they don't care about fans, they realized it was going to hurt their wallet and walked it back. They showed you their game plan gleefully, dont forget they were going to do this until everyone threw a grenade at them.
I mean they’re still doubling down on the reasoning behind it though. They say their business is failing and that they’d have to shutter it if they stay on CZcams, and they absolutely REFUSE to downsize their staff or take a pay cut. They just want us to fund it. Only change is that you have to wait a month before you see it on CZcams instead of the content being exclusively paid content on the new platform

I think them trying to pass their inability to budget efficiently to us is absurd and I'm surprised to see more people ignoring that and concentrating on the sillier parts of the video ie $6/mo

how many shows do they produce at any given time? how many different cast members/personalities do they have on screen?
They literally own a company, so 30 employees isn't that many people considering the quality and type of content they make. There's probably several editors on staff, writers, researchers, animators, someone working the camera, mixing audio, someone responsible for scouting locations to film at and coordinating travel arrangements, web designers, multiple hosts and co-hosts, assistants, interns, a legal team, managers, accountants, set designers etc. etc. They film these videos like actual TV shows with a full production team and everything.
Most likely no-show employees collecting salary, or employees working 2-3 hours a day making $100k+ a year!
@nissan_skyline I haven't watch them in a while and I remember when there were only like 4-5 guys total, but somehow I find it funny that a lot of people think 30 employees is a lot for the kinda of shows they've been producing but at least for me kinda the simplicity of their unsolved shows back in the day felt a bit better, and well I'm not financial expert but I guess it doesn't help with costs that they're located in SF(from what at I've heard)
@@Kuinsy see this is what i mean. i browsed playlists but kept seeing a lot of the same faces so i was shocked to hear a number as high as 30.
I appreciated Nissan_skyline trying to explain things, but it was ultimately wasted effort because i do know what a company is and what roles are involved lol, I mean i watch smosh and used to watch rooster teeth... but forgive me for saying its a lot more believable for those companies to have 30+ staff.

Im aware theyre a company but my shock is still kinda warranted because their on screen personalities that ive seen across multiple 'series' isnt varied much to my knowledge, and i expected the number to be a lot lower. Companies like RT and Smosh i fully expect to have 30+ employees. I'm not questioning the roles or purpose, and i... didnt really need someone to tell me what a youtube company is. But again i appreciate the thought.
When creators use the stance "You can afford $5" they do so from a very tunnel vision view. If every channel we follow did similarly, we are back to the mess that was cable. No, we cannot afford every creator wanting $5 a month. No, you don't deserve it more than the others.

Their Unsolved series, which is from their Buzzfeed days, is on Hulu now & used to be on Prime. Since starting their channel, they have remade those series & now call them Mystery Files & Ghost Files. If Prime & Hulu are interested in the old material, why wouldn't they be interested in the newer shows? They're the same but with fancier sets.
It appears they have grown too quickly & want to pay all their employees above normal salaries. Instead of laying off employees - they were laying off their fans! It made no sense.
Exactly…. They’re offering the best of both worlds. A streaming service and free streaming on CZcams. I only watched buzzfeed for them
I've read on the watcher reddit forum and some tweets that they aren't consistent with their Patreon but the fans didn't mind because they are just paying because they want to keep the channel afloat. They can just keep their patreon consistent and I think people would invest in them more.
They are mismanaging their funds. Hopefully, they wise up to that.

The thing they should do and can do
First:They need to hire a real Financial Planning & Analysis
Two:They can just doing YT Membership,I know YT take 30% but still you don't need to Maintance your own site and with yt membership you you can promoted it easily
They can also move out of California. That'll save alot right there.
They could've just released episodes a month early on Patreon and made it a bit more expensive instead of now having to pay additional website hosting fees for their streaming site
You know… listening to both videos and hearing the primary point of cost being so high, wouldn’t adding a streaming platform also incur on that profit margin as well??
That's because unlike the avarice short-term-minded or the out of touch dunces that has more money than we'll both see, you live in the real world and could see the problem with this subscription model in an age where there's far too many of them and cost of living being a squeeze for many; they're falling into the same trap RoosterTeeth did by doing this model.
I never heard of these guys until they pulled this stunt and like with RoosterTeeth, they just lost a lot of viewers they'll never get back because why would they support something that's born out of greed? They're so deluded to think their body of work is worthy enough of putting behind a pay wall when anyone can do their shtick for half the costs and half the manpower. Most CZcamsrs have a short shelf life, more so with essayists and commentary channels since the rule of thumb is this; they start out small, get noticed, becomes popular and then the inevitable drop off a while later either because of viewers picking up new interests elsewhere, the channel gets into a drama that damages their credibility or the creator is involved in a controversy.
It's greedy... I'm so ashamed of them. I was SUCH a big fan of theirs

They dont need a studio in Hollywood. You can do this anywhere and have good sets and sound. My guess is, they thought if this streaming watcher site was successful, theyd get invited officially into Hollywood. Just a guess. But there's no reason to have that space there and such a high staff. The best youtubers can do it on their house with one or two editors.
I think them wanting to make highly produced content is fair. After all making content is artistry and just because the audience said they don't mind less quality for their content, doesn't mean the 'artist' themselves wants to make that kind of content. It's just I think they should've managed their budget more wisely if they still don't have enough money to do what they want with their content. Pace themselves a bit.

I appreciate your honesty as a creator. A lot of other creators almost try to make you feel like you're not really supporting them unless you join their Patreon group. I like that you said that just watching a creator's content for free still represents real support.
Most people on CZcams dont pay $10 for youtube to watch a million channels and to think they ll pay $6 for 1 channell is just delusional.
Very Fine Brothers type of mistake
By leaving when and how they did, they lost my trust. They got to their new platform and heard crickets 🦗. I’m not going to go back to being a fan and supporting them now that I’ve seen how they leave. I can forgive but I can’t forget.
I'm glad that they listened to fans and found a fair balance for those of us who can't afford the new streaming service. I don't mind waiting an extra month.
I just wish they ran community polls or something, I feel it could have been avoided if they had tested the waters ahead of time.
I've followed them since their BFU days and always enjoyed the content they produced, but my family has fallen on kind of hard times recently. My mother has heart problems and can no longer work, and my dad has been looking for a new job for months after getting laid off but hasn't had much success. I've been trying to support them with what little money I make, but we're struggling right now. We actually have to sell our house soon, because there's no way we could afford to live there. Our money is going to actual necessities, and if it comes between some CZcamsrs and actual necessities, the necessities are going to win every single time. I was prepared to cut them loose, but am happy a solution was reached where their content would eventually be added to YT.

Maybe the pay wall streaming service would include profanity, por-phy, and other all types of inappropriate behaviors not allowed by CZcams (CZcams allows a lot of junk, but maybe they want to add excessive and deplorable shows)!

Glad they didn’t go through with the original plan and ignore their audience. I was satisfied with their response. Yeah it felt a little “PR”-y but honestly it’s hard to make apology videos. It addressed what needed to be addressed and they found a compromise. I personally forgive them and will continue watching their CZcams uploads.

How they should have done this is the streaming site to have to uncensored/director’s cut videos, while CZcams get censored/theatrical cut videos, people who go to your website are people who want to see the full uncensored/directors cut content won’t they? They need to cut staff...and cut shows that are not popular. Which from the comments I've read is the shows with Steven. Shane and Ryan are the talent. Seems like they need a person with a business degree to run the money side.
I appreciate they responded but i would prefer they release more content or new vids released more frequently.

Patreon made an update where you can be a free member / follower. So, everyone calculating 13k members at the minimum tier isn't considering this fact. They might have only 15% of that number.
As for the rest of the revenue sources, adsense doesn't pay much, at least not enough to run a 25 employee business. However, I do think merch, brand deals and live events would cover the costs. So it still is a bad move. Even big corporations need social media presence.
Weirdly, Shane looks so much more relaxed and comfortable in this video than he did in the last one.
This was my exact takeaway. The first video, Shane looked mad and was trying to distance himself from the other two. The apology, Shane was relaxed, maybe even a little happy, and centered as if he's taken over control of the situation.

Mmm, to me the apology doesn't hit right. Like, sure, they admit mistakes, and it's better than doubling down, but there are still manipulation tactics in there. "We're so grateful for your support over the years" is throwing someone a compliment during an apology to try to get them less mad. "We're sorry for how we said it," but how they said it wasn't the problem. There was no acknowledging that they disabled comments on Patreon or how they deleted some. No acknowledgement about the lavish spending and overproduction being detrimental, and moving away from what made them likable in the first place. EDIT: Don't forget the back-pedaling and gaslighting i.e. "No, we never said we're removing content. They misunderstood."
Honestly I think they owe someone money or something, when you do the calculation of how much they are earning it is a MINIMUM of 6 figures, it really doesn't make sense, unless they have something heavy backstage
I honestly do think it's just hiring their friends, not wanting to let them go, as well as expensive rent in an expensive city.
All I have to say is that, they probably made the best apology out of all ‘Good & Bad Apologies’ this one is really good. At least they address everything so that’s pretty good. I think they did a pretty good apology

poor Shane. In the first video, he looked visibly upset and borderline angry the entire time. And then in the update, he looks like he hasn't slept and has been crying for days from the stress.. Shane's comment "We can't stop you from password sharing" was a clear indicator on exactly how he feels about it.
he's a grown ass man who can make his own decisions. I am also a shaniac...but these fans coddling him is pissing me off.

I have just discovered them about a month ago and while I enjoyed it I didn't get hooked. The reason why was because the hosts didn't match the show. They were good they engaged me by being real ; the back ground didn't match very well however. The background looked too polished and fake compared to the hosts. Imho they are not financially handling the company right. They certainly can fix this and I believe they where heart felt in there apology. Hoping for them to being successful and their fans being happy in a near future.
I think they are artists and performers, and other people should never control what others dream and want to do. Let them do what they want. And if they want to hire family and friends that's their business not yours. They are helping their local community and if they have to create a streaming channel to do that, leave them to do it. And pitching them to big companies is the surest way to kill creative freedom and content. EFF that. They made a better decision to keep both CZcams and their streaming channel service. For them to have done this correctly was to simply put out a poll for ideas how to do it without creating chaos. But IMO they corrected that mistake with a reasonable solution.
