Dude there is ZERO way they weren't making money. I think this is a similar case of CEOs and executives in a big company not wanting to take a pay cut on their salaries, but also wanting to keep their staff or expand their production..... so they decide to raise the prices of goods and services on the customers. Same BS. As many people have pointed out, Steven Lim doesn't need a second Tesla and eat gold flaked desserts. Ya'll are already living better than 99% of us.

That's what I'm not getting, or people defending them saying they don't want to fire friends and family. But, something needs to give. Ultimately, they tried pawning their problem on their audience rather than compromising in other areas first. Just seems sneaky. Plus, if they were having issues, I think a warning way before that video would've helped and seeing how audience would react if they made a sub service first.
This apology works for me. They listened to the feedback, they admiited they messed up, and then made changes. They are human, I forgive them.

Let me say I am pleased with what they said. People can say 'The only reason they did it was because their numbers were looking bad and they were getting dragged all over the internet this weekend..." but really; what more could they have done? Can't go back in time and prevent 'Goodbye CZcams' from happening. At least they didn't double down and ignore the backlash. They handled this as best they could.
They can’t ignore the backlash because their careers would be over, I think it was an obvious solution and payment structure, what should happen next is they find the greedy person that suggested the greedy paywall structure and kick them out

I give them some grace with how their apology/update video wasn't them ignoring the backlash and seemingly responding to the feedback/complaints from the FANS not haters but the FANS who supported them from Day 1.

In their apology they still talked about the finances. Something is really wrong with their business considering their revenue streams. They should not be so strapped for cash. They did not seem to grasp the "over produced" commentary people have been saying. It's not the sets people liked it's them. If they don't realize that this venture will fail.
Yeah, the money thing is what really makes me scratch my head. Why add on so many people to your company on top of continuing to spend more and more money with each video?!

It seems like they want to have this big production thing, along with keeping their friends on board the projects. They probably don't want to have to fire anyone, I don't blame them for that, but they should literally understand that even bigger companies than them have had to cut back on overhead costs in some fashion or another. Not only that, but would they rather some of them keep their jobs or none of them? The way they wanted to go would've done more harm than good even if people weren't mad at the paywall.
@@MyKindofEntertainmentI can tell you exactly what their money problems are. They grew their business during the pandemic, when people had a huge amount of time to watch their content. The didn’t consider that this wasn’t legitimate growth. So they expanded on a business model, that was unsustainable. It relied on billions of people globally to be home and looking for things to do. Rookie mistake.
Also, I'd like to point out how they seem to "badmouth" the advertisers and also saying that they are having difficult time staying relevant to said advertisers when they make skits for brands (which I'm positive brands would love because we won't skip on it), their content aren't explicit, nice production-value uploads, and they have a lot of views per video.
It is becoming apparent that they do not seem to have an expert that'll help them essentially sort things out.

i think they handled the situation well, the problem is there never shouldve been a situation like this to handle. some critical thinking, including fans in this, good business advisory??? personally will not be resubscribing, the whole "anyone can afford this ! :D" and willingness to exploit fans like that... nah. i do wish them well tho, hope they get their shit together and manage their budget better in the future😭
like this was, in my opinion, more than just a "oops i spilled some milk" mistake. that was a relentless punch in the face to all of their fans, zero consideration showed. their apology was great, the adaptation to criticism admirable, but at this point its hard for me to say whether they did all that damage control for us, or to save their own asses. i dont think i want to give my loaylty to people who slipped up THIS badly. i saw someone say that a good apology makes for second chances, and not for amnesia, and again i wish them all the best, but it was in fact a Goodbye for me

They've lost their sense of authenticity which is what drew people to their content in the first place. I think they'll retain support initially but their subs/views will start to trickle away because people can't get back into it

I agree I think. I have resubscribed but I’m worried that the broken trust will make it so I can’t enjoy their videos as much. It was really disappointing when they said Goodbye because it made me not even want to rewatch their previous content (which I do A LOT). I guess we’ll see how it goes…

I let my thoughts be known on the video, I know it'll get buried in the comments of people blindly accepting their return, but I'm not stoked to return to a group that not only feels okay with cutting out the majority of their audience at the drop of a hat and is *more* than willing to insult their fans and call them "broke" in the midst of an economic crisis.
No, I completely get where you are coming from. Some people won't forgive, some will over time, but others feel their video was good enough and they are back onboard. I don't think the trust is ever gonna fully recover for some because let's be real with the surprise that was the 'update' it's possible something like this could happen again...
I for one am on the same boat as you are. We just saw how easy it was for them to lose a lot of their fans, have their friends and Shane's wife defend their decision, and make their patreons pay twice for the same content.
It is a sting that definitely made us all wear the rose-tinted glass off and see them with critical eyes rather than a comfort watch.
People pointed out that the cost for everything is pretty extreme. A couple HUNDRED THOUSAND for a two day trip for video? 50k to make a let’s play? That seems outrageous considering people become millionaires on CZcams with less and better quality. They should do away with their family oriented work environment and bring in people who know how to actually run a company

They'll be fine. So many people have a parasocial relationship with them, and that's why everyone was blaming Steven over the weekend. I'll never be able to watch their content the same, but I don't have that relationship with them. I don't think of them as my friends, and I don't feel like I "know" them. I think most people will forget about it but some people were starting to post things like (not a direct quote but...) "This move has actually made me realize that their content just isn't the same as it used to be" basically this highlighted for a lot of people the rose tinted glasses we watch "Watcher" through and those glasses are off for a few thousand people now. Probably won't hurt them much in the long run.
AGREED! This will be forgotten about in the next few weeks. Sure, when Watcher TV officially launches; people will think about what could've been had they not backtracked but overall; it'll be good before they know it.

I don't know if they'll be fine in the long run. The idea they had initially lends me to believe that whoever's running the business side of things is just winging it. If they're 'struggling' to make bigger production shows, more of them, on top of keeping their employees and they don't want to compromise on any of that...their business model is probably not gonna last. Unless of course, they learn to budget and compromise.
They need to explain why it was ok for them to hire new people if they were struggling. They clearly are running their company poorly. Without that explanation, I will remain....unsubscribed.
I get hiring friends and Buzzfeed crew who you KNOW are skilled and able to do the jobs you need them for, BUT overextending yourself with a bloated staff and horrendous budget well that sounds like a YOU problem that your fans shouldn't have to foot the bill for...

I have said this on other response videos. The damage has been done. I never heard of these guys before and I will forget about them quickly. They seem like douche nozzles with this fake ass apology. You should have never done this in the first place. You are rich who want to just become richer. It is like asking fans of a football team to pay for a stadium with their own money instead of the owner. I understand football isn't free but it rings the same. They can afford to pay for their staff without having to make Hollywood level videos. I don't know but I honestly think it is just scummy to see rich people ask for money from their fans.
Yeah, I've been looking at the comments on their video and others who have covered their backtracking. It's gonna be rough to get back fans but maybe this exposure will actually help grow their audience even more.
the thing was back in their humble days for Buzzfeed Unsolved they was never like this Mr Shane " Eat The Rich " Madej the best part was in those days we didnt care about shows like Steven Lim eating pricey food such as Steak it was about chasing ghosts and hearing about True Crime and Mysteries and it was simple and we got to see both Ryan and Shane go at back and forth like brothers but with Watcher I feel like everything got watered down you dont even see Ryan scared of ghosts cause there like 15 folks with him in a Haunted Buliding for instace
Imagine if the content right after the apology is Steven and Andrew eating expensive burgers with golden flakes.
The whole reason I watched watcher was because I liked Ryan and Shane. I'd also liked it less as time went on because it felt faker in general, but I stayed because I liked and respected them. Not anymore. I won't be resubscribing.

I'm glad they decided to change course instead of doubling down or attacking their fans the way some lesser CZcamsr's would have. And I think this is a way smarter business decision. A streaming platform would have put them on the road to bankruptcy, and I would hate to see them fail.
Especially after they've come so far after building from scratch!
One thing about this that still makes me feel uneasy is the model they tried to launch on Friday is still imminent, just the full implementation is delayed as they get people used to the idea. So unless they can really take a hard look at their content, pull back on the production and get back to the chill, somewhat unpolished, and funny vibes they used to have I see Watcher failing all the same. Their ad revenue won’t be the same after this since they’ve effectively ruined their reputation with advertisers. And as someone else in the comments said, the rose-tinted glasses a lot of viewers watched their new content through for nostalgia’s sake have been removed. This move showed viewers these may not be same guys we watched on Buzzfeed. It’s just hard, but I wish them all the success and will continue to watch them on CZcams if I find the content enjoyable.

I mean, it's a good apology, they say and promise to do all the right things, but I do think the damage is hard to undo. I know enough to understand that this was really their only choice going forward if they wanted to have an audience for their content, and the apology was obviously crafted by a PR guy so it's hard to tell if they really are sorry or know they just have to go through with the statement. It can't change the fact that I now know the kind of thoughtless, out of touch guys they really are behind the persona, and that kind of sours my view of a channel where the main draw was the people making the content.
It's funny how a PR probably came up with this solid apology video, but there wasn't a knowledgeable PR person to prevent them from coming up with this dang plan in the first place haha

I went in fully ready to dismiss anything they had to say, but this apology I can accept. I also think it was very deliberate to have Steven say "we messed up" like 10 secs into the video. I think they know he's been under most fire. I don't think I'll ever feel the same about them, but only time will tell.

Before I make a decision about resubscribing I need to know if they actually talked about people being ungrateful. I’m gonna have to do some research and figure out whether or not people from the company actually said that.
I saw a commenter on Instagram call people ungrateful brats. I saw another person accuse the first of being a watcher employee. I saw no proof of the latter being true- the Instagram acct was for a cat and had no obvious ties to watcher.

I watched every episode and video they ever made. Including this update. But it is the last time. It was what I thought was their genuine personalities that I liked. What they showed me is that where they are great actors, they are awful people. Nothing has ever been genuine. Ex Shaniac now wanting the portions of my last 10 years they stole from me.

In the end they'll be fine. Long term if anyone takes a hard hit my bet would be on Steven. He's a fan favorite scapegoat as if Shane and Ryan haven't been in this industry for years and have no input or sway in a business they cofounded and own. In all the outrage over the announcement it's interesting to see how fans say they don't care about high production values and being drawn to Shane and Ryan's chemistry while they talked about their ultimate goal of wanting to create TV content not CZcams content, of wanting to produce, not be the star in content. They want to make TV content without giving creative control/ownership to a studio (understandable given their Buzzfeed past) but it seems like majority of their fan base enjoys made for YT content since this is the platform of choice. Mismatched fan wants and expectations with their vision for their future as content creators. My bets are in a year or two we'll be getting a thanks for the support/goodbye I'm pursuing new opportunities that align with my visions video or post (probably from Ryan first). They shot themselves in the foot with the initial announcement which may sink any chance of it being successful long-term even with the changes.
Yeah, they weren't in any sort of scandal it was just a very bad business decision that will blow over in the next week or so by the next big headline that'll have everyone talking

I think both reactions I'm seeing in the comments and in the community are very valid. Those who forgive after they did claim fault are totally understandable. I personally really love them and I wish that this never happened and those who say that they're still hurt and won't be subscribing again yet and making the statement that they still gambled with their viewers. I think is a total valid statement as well just that they had that in them really hurts and I totally understand though that they are human and I never saw them as a corporate entity trying to get more money so I just wish they would maybe get a budget planner cause the math still aint mathing for me

As a long time fan it’s not a matter of forgiveness it’s can they make decisions and take actions moving forward that retain my trust as a viewer, supporter and fan. I think the new video was a really good step in the right direction, I’m willing to give them a chance, but it doesn’t erase the damage that was done with their words, attitude and actions in the first announcement. They basically blindsided people and it’s always going to make me a little wary.

I think 2 big things came up during the backlash of their ‘goodbye’ video 1)going behind the paywall and 2)there are certain shows (that I will leave unnamed) that no one seems interested in. Their apology video responded to the first, but no mention of the second.
Yeah, I never understood the 'some shows that didn't work here on YT are perfectly suited for a streaming service...' but how though? No, seriously...if people didn't watch certain shows on Watcher YT why would they engage with it on a streaming service? Just because they pay for the platform you assume that translates into views?

This has definitely been great or for them. Yes there was controversy but it put their name in places where it probably never would have been to begin with, which will expand their fan base. I'm sure tons of people subbed just to see the drama and stay for the content. The response the fan base has been kinda of awesome........ It's rare for a CZcamsr to do the right thing. It was quite refreshing.
No press is bad press because WAY too many people literally said in their commentary, "I never heard of these guys before!" or "I never even knew what Watcher was before they went viral for the fan backlash..." who knows perhaps this entire situation could be a blessing in disguise!

I’ve decided to subscribe again, and give them another chance. I appreciated their apology and that they’ve apparently read what we’ve been saying.
The fact that Sarah said some petty shit sits poorly with me, and I haven’t seen the employee or what Steve’s said but if they’re true it also makes me hesitant. I’ll continue to watch, but if they fuck up again, I doubt I’d ever subscribe for a third time.

I never cared for Stevens content. The only time I enjoyed seeing him was in Too Many Spirits. I think I am like the majority where we do not care to see some dude eat things that cost our college tuition.
I saw a comment on the response video suggesting Steven travel and support smaller business that would be on Worth It. And I would totally watch that! We (I am guessing myself and the majority on the internet) love to see someone with money help those who need it most. That would rank in views and money if that really is the issue

What doesn't make sense is that its more expensive to run the streaming service in general. they would be better off not doing the streaming service, not only that but they are going after a Rooster Teeth model which just closed up shop recently and had been struggling for years now. the future doesn't look good for watcher right now. unless they can be better which this was a terrible start, it doesn't leave me with high confidence.

Maybe I’m a vindictive person, but my opinion of them has been tainted by the knowledge of their actual disdain for broke people like me. I know I’m poor - I’m disabled and my work opportunities are limited - but to be attacked by people I previously admired, completely out of left field, specifically because of my limited income, was extremely hurtful.
I found their apology to be somewhat manipulative, and I can’t forget that they basically fired me as a viewer because they don’t deem me worthy of their content. It’s painful to realise how little my support over the years meant to them. Kudos to the fans who’ve forgiven them and can still enjoy their content, but I seem unable to shake it off so easily, and I won’t be re subscribing.

I forgive them and when i get a new job i'll likely subscribe but i have 1 suggestion. The suggestion is to allow "multiple profiles" in one account like Netflix. That way several international fans can band together to pay for 1 account. Its why i still pay for Netflix even tho i dont use it - my parents and best friend back home use it. And I have CZcams Premium Family and i split the cost with my sisters.

I honestly think they got bad advice that sounded really good. It’s really nice to see accountability, especially these days although I shouldn’t be surprised seeing Steven is from Ohio!! Shane I believe is mid western to. Sorry Ryan, west coasters are trash! ( Just kidding! You are great! Just ribbin ya!) so happy I still get to see you guys!

This was the best way they could’ve handled this situation imo and I’m glad they backtracked but I completely understand people that just can’t trust them anymore. If I’m being honest, I don’t think Shane and Ryan have messed up that much on CZcams besides this and while it was quite a big mistake, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as long as they don’t mess it up again.
Yeah the fast reply after what must've felt like the longest weekend of their lives was a step in the right direction

I've been watching them for years and the last year of their content felt a little flat. I been saying all year "Shane doesn't seem like he want's to be there anymore and I think he's gonna leave any minute." Then this happened. He just seemed unhappy in most of the videos, specially ghost files and mystery files. They even joked about it in the last few episodes.
I feel ya he's a cardboard cutout of his usual snarky self
They should have said they are making a site in three months. Get people interested in it.

The question they havent answered is what is watcher tv offering that patreon isnt? The reality is that they just want to create their own streaming service that they can grow into something like netflix with other shows and creators, but they went about it the completely wrong way
I suppose the new episodes of their shows. Patreon probably just has BTS stuff (I don't have it so I wouldn't know) while Watcher TV will have all the new content people wanted to see on YT in the first place.
it all comes down to respect imo. they built what they have off of those who subscribed, watched, interacted with and provided suggestions/stories for their videos. their original plan and their goodbye video was showing a massive disrespect to the very people who helped make them successful to begin with. to just yank that away and declare all future stuff to be for only those who could directly pay them was disrespectful to the far larger amount of folks who could only watch the videos with ads on but whose viewership contributed greatly to their profitability and success. glad they walked things back but that initial disrespect will take a lot of time to mend. there's definitely going to be a number of folks who just aren't going to be okay with them going forward after having the pseudoparasocial image of the business shattered. but so long as they commit to transparency about things going forward I'm sure they'll eventually gain some of that original goodwill back.
Yeah it'll take some time but I think we just gotta 'watch' to see Watcher's next move to get their fans back on track since they rocked the boat
Well I mean they nearly messed up big time I mean I was already telling my wife I guess that we weren't going to get to watch any more of their stuff because of this so I get it but at the same time they also did the right thing I think at the end of the day so I do have to tip my hat to him on that a long time ago I just got a CZcams premium account and fast forward through any red ads in video so I never watched these ads like ever
Yeah, I understand the people still ticked off. As quickly as they put up the apology, you know it was to save face. However, they did what they had to do as far as I'm concerned.
I do want to also comment on the "eat the rich" sentiment. Its severely misplaced and it frankly annoys me. When ppl - Shane, even - say EAT THE RICH, they dont mean content creators who live comfortably. Its not ideologically hypocritical for Shane to do any of this. The rich we're meant to be eating is the capitalists who use their money to create more money.
People that exploit workers by paying them as little as possible to extract as much money from their work as possible. Separating the workers from the fruit of their labour.
THAT IS NOT WATCHER. THAT IS NOT SHANE/RYAN/STEVEN. They ARE the product. They ARE the workers. They are getting money from their own production. Just because theyre moderately successful at it and have some pocket money, or a Tesla, doesnt actually make them millionaires and even if they each had a net worth of a million, in the scheme of capitalism, thats not actually much. Look at property houses in LA. Properties cost at least 1 million. Its all perspective.
What they were doing was insensitive to the economic reality of a lot of fans, YES, but to claim theyre the rich we should be eating just shows y'all dont actually know any theory and just regurgitate slogans without understanding any praxis.

Lots of ppl mocked the sag-aftra strikes with the same line of thought saying "boo hoo eat the rich!" Instead of supporting them against the producers and company owners who ACTUALLY don't do shit and just make money from sitting on their asses and making bad decisions (looking at you, David Zaslav!!!!)
I think I'm the only person whos skeptical about this apology because they literally have a live show tomorrow and due to the backlash, walking into that would have been hell. I'm sure there's some truth to the apology. But i feel like if it wasnt for the live shows, the silence woulda been longer.

I was only a casual viewer subbed to their channel, they definitely lost me after this stunt. $6 for a streaming service with only their content, which they don't have much of compared to other streaming services (or even something like Dropout which has YEARS of their content on it)? Nah, not going to bother giving them my time anymore. I was never into Buzzfeed back when it was popular so I have no connection or parasocial relationship to them. They're just three out of touch youtubers that want money from their viewers like trying to get blood from a stone. Their hardcore fans can keep their apology lol

I watched them on BFeed prior to their move to watcher and I subbed to watcher when they first started it.
I unsubbed after "Goodbye" and I will not resub.
Their elitist, out of touch attitude has really put me off.
It looks like a money grab and an FU to all their viewers. Especially with the whole "true fans would pay" attitude. I will point out that these guys have traveled around the world filming their food, ghost, murder, and so on, episodes. (wish I could travel around the world).
They took a match to my loyalty and I don't need them, there are plenty of other channels out there that do similar stuff.

I forgive them, but I don’t trust their financial decisions. More than anything this speaks to how dumb they are with their money and it would be a shame to see them fall apart, not because they aren’t viewed, but because they suck at money management. The steps they’re making sound less suicidal but we’ll see if it’s enough. But like everyone has been saying, if they need to scale back the production, then by all means, PLEASE.
Either that or scale down employees because do they really need as many as they have?

I wasn't mad...I was disappointed in them. hours later I'm conflicted. On the one hand, this is a huge fuckup. On the other.....it's also their first. Like they're doing little things wrong sure with their business probably, like hiring so many ppl and building expensive sets, but as ever don't attribute to malice what can be simple stupidity. I didn't dislike Steven before this, I just thought he was a bit much in Too Many Spirits and whatnot. Now I dislike him. Alot of the first video was him speaking, but beyond that it was his attitude and then that worth it reboot he was touting while they talked about needing more money to pay for their 25 employees they already had.
I already didn't watch Steven's content, I wouldn't see that changing; I wasn't enjoying ghost files. i liked alot of their other shows tho. Eh i'm still undecided. I was unsubscribed but I might keep an eye just to see how things progress. On the back of my phone is a popsocket i bought a couple years ago of the Professor. It says "Learn or Perish". I think it's something the boys should keep in mind. Listen to the Professor.
