£1,000 for a return flight to Thailand from the UK in July. The price to bar fine a girl has doubled. £ to Baht is low, Cheaper in other parts of Asia Not being negative. There facts. I hope Pattaya gets back to normal.

owning and/or running a bar is one of the hardest businesses in the world even in ones OWN country with experience of the industry, trying to do it with no prior experience, in another country with a different language and culture is an incredibly brave thing to do... good on Tony for even giving it a go! Best advice to anyone who wants to do it is if you don't have the money to burn then ya better off just enjoy being a customer and let someone else worry about the day to day stresses of running one!! or open a little bar in your shed in your back garden... much less chance of losing the shirt off your back or stressing yourself out!!! (and I say all that with over 20yrs experience in the Hospitality and Bar Industry) Great Interview as always Trevor!
This is very true. I have 10 years experience of late night bars in the U.K… It’s bloody tough, long hours and stress.
Well said thank you
It's good to see somebody telling it like it is and not pretending everything will be back to normal in a few months? Things have changed forever and it will never get back to anywhere near what it was? Low exchange rate, people with less money, and expensive flights are here to stay?
Totally agree, it can work in time though🙏
The best looking girls are on bigo and other apps live streaming. Earning more just sat on there arse in isaan than at the bar. It'll be a while for the quality to come back to pattaya
A lot has changed and now it's how embrace it moving forwards that matters

As an Aussie who worked for a Brit company in the middle east for over 8 years, I do enjoying seeing an Aussie and a Pommy sitting down for a bit of banter.......although, I reckon the banter would multiply when the beers come out!!!!

This reiterates the fact that owning or opening a bar is really hard. Lots of money, patience, and tenacity is needed.

Flights are expensive, the girls are expensive exchange rate is poor it’s just not worth it for me atm

I just returned back to Australia 2 weeks ago
I met Tony in February when I was in Pattaya for 7 weeks, he is a really nice guy and Sweets Lounge definitely had the hottest girls in Soi Honey.
I went back in May for 4 weeks and played alot of golf with Tony and we discussed the issues about running his bar , the way he communicated to his staff was so refreshing honest and caring ...he treats them like he is the father figure.
Bloody good bloke and I hope when he reopens everyone in Pattaya can drop in a d support him and the Staff as it's a honestly the nicest classiest bar in Soi Honey
I agree he's a great guy and hopefully just taking a 2-month time to enjoy his own things and come back with a boom

Nice to hear a honest guy, the numbers of tourists now is tiny, Buzzin guy bigs it up but look at the numbers ,they dont lie.
What I say and consistently say is that the city is ok if you come out here right now I have never said it is rammed with tourists
With the Thailand pass still being a requirement for foreigners to enter Thailand, you will not get the 10 day tourist traveling anytime soon.

My first visit was in 2004 at age 47. Saw stars in my eyes, retirement eligible in a few years. Planned for income, etc. A few trips later came so close to buying some businesses, an internet cafe, one of the larger bar and room places just off Pattaya Klang. So glad I did not. It would have been a struggle. I am sure I would not have made enough money to really retire. As a contract engineer in the USA, I made a lot and have kept working. Now fully doshed up for a comfortable retirement anywhere, and hope to spend 6 months every year in Thailand, but doubt the full retirement visa is going to happen. Too much paperwork for us USA people, no embassy income letter available anymore, insurance, not to mention whatever COVID or the next pandemic rules will be. Been 15 times. Chomping at the bit for trip 16. I so miss and give great credit to the people like Tony that opened business.
The old Pig and Whistle, Butcher Arm Pub, the Domocile Austrian place, the Brau House German place, and the list goes on. I was part of a family restaurant and lounge here in the States and we had enough issues with licenses, food inspectors, liquor licenses, etc. Paying off all the thailand mafia, crooked cops, regular rules, etc. I would not have liked that.
wish him well
Great comment me I enjoyed reading that thank you for sharing your experience and yes you had an escape with the internet bar
I'm retired in the Philippines and while I'm intrigued and interested in the notion of owning/opening a bar or resto here, I'm canny enough to realize that such an enterprise doesn't 'take care of itself' but would require my time and effort in terms of many hours each week. No thanks. Don't 'need' the money.
Enjoying this interview with Mr Minter , very good indeed.
Haha cheers
Gotta feeling he's jacked in? Young, fit, intelligent , he knows when to fold 'em!
I think he's just taking some time out he owns the building so it's not like he's under any pressure
Happy to see a falang expat in Pattaya who keeps himself in good shape mentally and physically. Rare view these days.
My body is a temple lol
It will bounce back, and I think the entertainment owners need to be patient. Most of them I think are being pragmatic about their pricing, but some are trying to claw back their losses over the last two years in a matter of months.
I understand the economics of it, but they need to play a game that’s sustainable to survive long term.
Good interview. 👍
as you said it will return
Currently $2000 return Sydney to Bkk for XmasNY. Route capacity is being constrained to maximise yield. Good call in my view as bulk tourists won't be charging back for at least 6 months. Meantime tonnes of bars ... Very few customers.
Plus online hookups and other options.
High prices are also throttling the golden goose.
Thank you for sharing your experience
In my experience thai bars are always cheaper and more fun then western bars in Thailand.
I personally try not to vist westerner run bars but am not totally opposed to it either.
fair enough mate
I have posted previously on this channel and said that until people can travel freely and without restrictions, travel and tourism will not return to anything like pre pandemic levels. There is an argument that even before the pandemic Pattaya had too many bars and even when business picks up it is likely that many will no longer be viable. One other thing needs to be taken into account. I suspect that many of the "well financed bars" are financed other than through bar revenues and do not depend on bar revenues. It's hard to compete with those types of bars. That issue aside it is a chicken and egg situation. Without enough tourists many bars are not viable but tourists are reluctant to travel because of continuing health restrictions. It will take a long time for bar business in Pattaya to come anywhere near what it was pre pandemic. And even that is going to be a struggle.
I agree mate I work in China I can get to Thailand but can't come back to work without 3+ weeks in a government hotel at 2500 baht a night. Cheaper for the Chinese but it is what it is.

Pattaya is heading for a perfect storm, the bar ladies have priced themselves out of a job, air fares have risen etc.
the girls have not priced themselves out .. its the owners who pay them way too much so hence the girls push their prices way up so they do not need to go ST or LT....

Thank you very much
A useful interview for everyone. Touched on so may topics. If your new to Thailand some good advice and maybe the covid testing on arrival could be expanded on in another video. Now and again I am asked about Thai visa's and how you live in Thailand. It's a complicated subject. So many routes to a certain class of visa, so many loopholes for the Immigration police to make their pocket money. From 12 month retirement visa to 90 day retirement visa to marriage visa the 30,60,90 day visa the list is never ending I know nothing about owning bar and don't want to know. I worked in the energy industry in North/ South East Asia since late 1980's. But I always understood for some falang's opening a beer bar was a simple way of becoming an investor entitling you to a class of visa that allows you a work permit and at least a 12 month stay. It's one of the reasons there are so many beer bars populating Pattaya.
Thanks mate much appreciated
Pattaya got so over built. Exchange rate a huge factor. In 2004 my first trip about 42 baht to the 1 USD. Been below or near 30 for years now. Look at all the little outdoor bar complexes they kept building and foreigners kept buying into. No way they made money to keep running, never mind to make a living and live off of. Sad to see. Glad I caught about a decade of greatness. I was there before the Russian mob influx, before the Chinese tourist hordes, and lately the middle east and Indian masses. most of those Indians are not spending money. they are there illegally or basically bending the rules by working in the Indian hole in the wall restaurants that now number in the 100s all over town. Those places don't make enough money to pay a living. They make their money by sponsoring Indian nationals in and charging their families money to get the guy a visa to Thailand as a cultural expert, chef or whatever. Any western restaurant will NEVER have the owner serving or even working there. Must hire many Thais. But stop in those little Indian places and you will 9 times out of 10 be waited on by an Indian guy. Amazing how they get away with it
The Indian restaurants scenario is spot on mate you nailed that
I think before it was covid/restrictions now it is a Money thing. Just look at the prices in €/US. It is so hard to stay afloat right now, not much left, if any, to save up for Thailand.
Well said
You say Trevor that no one could have predicted what was going to happen but the world economic Forum did as they carried out an identical simulation 5 months before it happened.

John Spartan your spot on.WEF are doing their best to destroy peoples businesses and lives and yes they HAD pre planned this hoax. Why on earth that after two and a half years of constant lies is there still millions not able to see the con?
The £ is rubbish with most currencies in the World at the moment. I am from UK and holidays in The Med are still more expensive than Thailand. Yes the prices for flights are expensive at the moment but Hotels in Thailand are inexpensive as is a night out (without a Lady.).
Many of my family worked in Airline Industry best to start looking for flights 50 days before departure.
Book if possible for Tuesday as cheapest day of week to fly. If you can hold your nerve 10 days before you want to fly as airlines want to fill up empty seats. But Christmas New Year or late July / August book at least 5 months before as flights will be high and airlines know that seats will be scarce.
Cambodia Laos and even Vietnam are better value than Thailand at the moment but I do prefer Thailand.
Great Interview enjoyed the Honesty.
We are in a really difficult situation right now regarding pricing
Great insights into the industry 👏
Glad you enjoyed the video
Wow. Wise words. Gonna take time.

Good interview and Tony fully understands that to be a successful bar owner things have to go both ways and Yes running any business here with Thais it becomes a family affair,I ran a bar in Phuket with another guy back in the early 20s and we had no girls,no lady drinks or bar fines but every night the bar was full freelancers and Punters but I must say this, those guys were a lot different to the guys that come here now, None of those guys were looking for wives or girlfriends they just came here to party had some great times back in those days,But yes a re set has taken place but all the years I've been here the Girls have never changed.

Come out and 100% you have a great time and if you're here come and meet me and I promise you I will take you to many places where you would definitely have a good time. Nothing stays the same forever the city is going through a change and some will embrace the change others will reject it but whatever happens the change will happen. Irrespective of what the outcome is that will still be entertainment here it's up to you to grab it with both hands and enjoy yourself to the max
Competition between bars must be fierce at the moment i can understand his thinking...the cost of keeping up the running costs of the bar as opposed to the ratio of customers drinking in the bar...it's a tricky one !...I think Pattaya will be busier at the end of the year ( high season ) as now might be too early to expect high numbers coming back into Thailand. Im back this month but only to see my wife and family so thats a different situation. We will all have to remain positive and hope for the best ! Cheers Richard...Pattaya Dog Grooming Salon.
It's the chicken and egg scenario the bars need the girls the girls need the customer so I guess until things pan out and girls come back and customers don't arriving it's wanting to close for a couple of months just to let the mess untangle
I think as Pattaya settles and modernises a split will emerge between a older crowd and younger crowd, with the older more experienced types going in Tony’s bar etc and the younger drawn too the clubs etc
I agree it will be interesting to see how the next 6 months pan out

I've found in my experience some big bars with great locations and don't need to hussle for customers as people will sit there regardless of the owner then you have the other side of the coin little bars husssling for customers like your there best friend and they really have to work to get customers
Most bar owners are clueless dreamers. They don’t even realise for example it’s literally not worth opening a bar unless you can get one on a corner. Go anywhere in the world and see how busy corner bars are compared to the others. The fact 99% of them don’t even know that means they are destined to fail like both the guys in this interview.

Hey Trev, I hope your friend makes it. Unfortunately, most small businesses fail in the first five years. Add on the COVID pandemic, which has impacted businesses large and small; the businesses lacking adequate cash reserves to weather the storm are severely affected. I wonder whether he has thought of getting equity partners to assist him now and in the future. I wonder how often the smaller bars get together and discuss similar issues that impact them all.
Where I live, many businesses have permanently closed or reconfigured their business model to adapt to COVID, i.e., formerly eat-in places going to delivery and carry out only, resulting in some instances in significant labor cost savings. I know adult entertainment bars are a different animal no matter where you live. They are definitely dependent upon the attractiveness of their staff to fill up the seats, customers consuming the booze, and have the ladies make enough in tips to make it worth their time to work at the establishment.
Hope the best for him. Cheers!!

There so many bars in Pattaya, how does one stand out. A very successful idea was "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" drinks. The bar across from Triangle Bar was extremely successful with this approach. Eventually, the Triangle Bar did the same promo.
These are examples of thinking outside the box that becomes success. Just opening a generic bar doesn't cut it. It's a combo of girls, location and prices. You need foot traffic to help. Repeat customers are the best advertising.
I lived in Jomtien 10 years. In those years, less than 15 times staying in Jomtien. Soi Lengkee was the "Cheap Charlie" area back then. Tree Town & LK Metro are the trendy areas atm.
The hard part is staying ahead of the game with so many bars as everyone's tried everything once or twice
spit and sawdust bar with great music and fun girls is the way to go all theses big posh bars with fortunes spent on them will never make money but if you have money to burn good luck for that
The buy one get one free farce only works with mugs who never mastered simple arithmatic.
A local bar on the strip in Banchang is being made to 'jump through the hoops' to get the SHA certificate. A list of boxes to tick. Very easy to fill in 'on line' but the actual inspection could be a while in happening then subject to 'issues'. Meanwhile on the other side of town the 'local bars and restaurants' are full on, live music and closing in the early hours! TIT. They just don't want 'outsiders' on their patch! Difficult---- but then again we are 'foreigners'!
wow thanks for sharing
Just returned to Brissy Australia after 2 weeks in Patts, believe me the place is humming, interestingly more old guys than younger fellas there late May -9June. Avoided the Soi 6 monopoly so can't comment on the level of business there. Sois Buakhao, the Poon and adjacent Sois looked well patronised to me. But it does seem to me that there's too many Bars now competing against each other, can't help thinking that more than a few Falang Bar owners are on borrowed time there. Massage TGs and Freelancers (attractive ones) especially MILFs seem to be well patronised, and PRICES ARE REASONABLE. If you can afford the Flight go.
nice one mate glad you had a great time
Still to expensive to fly and still have restrictions but hope it changes for the better soon miss it there.
Some of the prices I have seen quoted on the internet are absolutely ridiculous but I guess that is the cost of fuel increase
Nothing will be changing for the better.
Are we sure tourists will actually want to come back in the same volume. These locations are aiming to go upmarket as well to wealthier tourists?
Good point. Thailand used to be the place where I would spend as much time as possible over a 20 year period, but right now along with Japan, China and North Korea, Thailand is the last place on Earth I want to be. Left there in May 2022, no plans to ever go back.
I hope so too
Opening a business and treating it as a "hobby"? It was unfortunately, doomed from the start. Best of luck to him in his future endeavours.
He is a great guy
Don't think there will be many buyers for his bar any time soon.
@@Buzzinpattaya hat's the ...weakness point.
Trevor your the Michael Parkinson of Asia good interview and nice guest

Sounds like a volatile investment. I hope your bar is a hit Trev. I'm sure it will be.
cheers mate
Definitely agree, people are apprehensive to travel, even to go to the shops, just the look when someone moves
