owning and/or running a bar is one of the hardest businesses in the world even in ones OWN country with experience of the industry, trying to do it with no prior experience, in another country with a different language and culture is an incredibly brave thing to do... good on Tony for even giving it a go! Best advice to anyone who wants to do it is if you don't have the money to burn then ya better off just enjoy being a customer and let someone else worry about the day to day stresses of running one!! or open a little bar in your shed in your back garden... much less chance of losing the shirt off your back or stressing yourself out!!! (and I say all that with over 20yrs experience in the Hospitality and Bar Industry) Great Interview as always Trevor!

My first visit was in 2004 at age 47. Saw stars in my eyes, retirement eligible in a few years. Planned for income, etc. A few trips later came so close to buying some businesses, an internet cafe, one of the larger bar and room places just off Pattaya Klang. So glad I did not. It would have been a struggle. I am sure I would not have made enough money to really retire. As a contract engineer in the USA, I made a lot and have kept working. Now fully doshed up for a comfortable retirement anywhere, and hope to spend 6 months every year in Thailand, but doubt the full retirement visa is going to happen. Too much paperwork for us USA people, no embassy income letter available anymore, insurance, not to mention whatever COVID or the next pandemic rules will be. Been 15 times. Chomping at the bit for trip 16. I so miss and give great credit to the people like Tony that opened business.
The old Pig and Whistle, Butcher Arm Pub, the Domocile Austrian place, the Brau House German place, and the list goes on. I was part of a family restaurant and lounge here in the States and we had enough issues with licenses, food inspectors, liquor licenses, etc. Paying off all the thailand mafia, crooked cops, regular rules, etc. I would not have liked that.
    wish him well

I have posted previously on this channel and said that until people can travel freely and without restrictions, travel and tourism will not return to anything like pre pandemic levels. There is an argument that even before the pandemic Pattaya had too many bars and even when business picks up it is likely that many will no longer be viable. One other thing needs to be taken into account. I suspect that many of the "well financed bars" are financed other than through bar revenues and do not depend on bar revenues. It's hard to compete with those types of bars. That issue aside it is a chicken and egg situation. Without enough tourists many bars are not viable but tourists are reluctant to travel because of continuing health restrictions. It will take a long time for bar business in Pattaya to come anywhere near what it was pre pandemic. And even that is going to be a struggle.

A useful interview for everyone. Touched on so may topics. If your new to Thailand some good advice and maybe the covid testing on arrival could be expanded on in another video. Now and again I am asked about Thai visa's and how you live in Thailand. It's a complicated subject. So many routes to a certain class of visa, so many loopholes for the Immigration police to make their pocket money. From 12 month retirement visa to 90 day retirement visa to marriage visa the 30,60,90 day visa the list is never ending I know nothing about owning bar and don't want to know. I worked in the energy industry in North/ South East Asia since late 1980's. But I always understood for some falang's opening a beer bar was a simple way of becoming an investor entitling you to a class of visa that allows you a work permit and at least a 12 month stay. It's one of the reasons there are so many beer bars populating Pattaya.

Pattaya got so over built. Exchange rate a huge factor. In 2004 my first trip about 42 baht to the 1 USD. Been below or near 30 for years now. Look at all the little outdoor bar complexes they kept building and foreigners kept buying into. No way they made money to keep running, never mind to make a living and live off of. Sad to see. Glad I caught about a decade of greatness. I was there before the Russian mob influx, before the Chinese tourist hordes, and lately the middle east and Indian masses. most of those Indians are not spending money. they are there illegally or basically bending the rules by working in the Indian hole in the wall restaurants that now number in the 100s all over town. Those places don't make enough money to pay a living. They make their money by sponsoring Indian nationals in and charging their families money to get the guy a visa to Thailand as a cultural expert, chef or whatever. Any western restaurant will NEVER have the owner serving or even working there. Must hire many Thais. But stop in those little Indian places and you will 9 times out of 10 be waited on by an Indian guy. Amazing how they get away with it

The £ is rubbish with most currencies in the World at the moment. I am from UK and holidays in The Med are still more expensive than Thailand. Yes the prices for flights are expensive at the moment but Hotels in Thailand are inexpensive as is a night out (without a Lady.).
Many of my family worked in Airline Industry best to start looking for flights 50 days before departure.
Book if possible for Tuesday as cheapest day of week to fly. If you can hold your nerve 10 days before you want to fly as airlines want to fill up empty seats. But Christmas New Year or late July / August book at least 5 months before as flights will be high and airlines know that seats will be scarce.
Cambodia Laos and even Vietnam are better value than Thailand at the moment but I do prefer Thailand.

Go anywhere in the world and see how busy corner bars are compared to the others. The fact 99% of them don’t even know that means they are destined to fail like both the guys in this interview.

Hey Trev, I hope your friend makes it. Unfortunately, most small businesses fail in the first five years. Add on the COVID pandemic, which has impacted businesses large and small; the businesses lacking adequate cash reserves to weather the storm are severely affected. I wonder whether he has thought of getting equity partners to assist him now and in the future. I wonder how often the smaller bars get together and discuss similar issues that impact them all.
Where I live, many businesses have permanently closed or reconfigured their business model to adapt to COVID, i.e., formerly eat-in places going to delivery and carry out only, resulting in some instances in significant labor cost savings. I know adult entertainment bars are a different animal no matter where you live. They are definitely dependent upon the attractiveness of their staff to fill up the seats, customers consuming the booze, and have the ladies make enough in tips to make it worth their time to work at the establishment.
Hope the best for him. Cheers!!

There so many bars in Pattaya, how does one stand out. A very successful idea was "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" drinks. The bar across from Triangle Bar was extremely successful with this approach. Eventually, the Triangle Bar did the same promo.
These are examples of thinking outside the box that becomes success. Just opening a generic bar doesn't cut it. It's a combo of girls, location and prices. You need foot traffic to help. Repeat customers are the best advertising.
I lived in Jomtien 10 years. In those years, less than 15 times staying in Jomtien. Soi Lengkee was the "Cheap Charlie" area back then. Tree Town & LK Metro are the trendy areas atm.

Very easy to fill in 'on line' but the actual inspection could be a while in happening then subject to 'issues'. Avoided the Soi 6 monopoly so can't comment on the level of business there. Sois Buakhao, the Poon and adjacent Sois looked well patronised to me. But it does seem to me that there's too many Bars now competing against each other, can't help thinking that more than a few Falang Bar owners are on borrowed time there. Massage TGs and Freelancers (attractive ones) especially MILFs seem to be well patronised, and PRICES ARE REASONABLE. If you can afford the Flight go.
