Triangle Bar Pattaya - Owner Steve shares the last two years of financial hardship and frustration!

  • Pattaya has many bars, so many to be honest. But the last two years has sadly claimed many victims to the situation we have al had to endure.
Triangle Bar owner Steve kindly shares just how hard it has been trying to survive what has been the hardest two years of his life as a bar owner here in Pattaya.
Staffing issues, money issues and restriction after restriction has caused literally devastating outcomes. However, with the new relaxation of the rules here in Pattaya, Steve now faces new challenges ahead as we come to terms with gradually reopening Pattaya.

Anyone who has run a small business can fully relate to how much hard work goes into to trying to survive in general let alone with covid crippling your trade for over 18mnths. So hats off to those trying to run one in Thailand where the government officials have now turned covid 19 regulations into a very lucrative business. As someone who owned a butchers/meat supplier to restaurants, I can honestly say that even if I was given a free restaurant I would sell it immediately. The work involved and headache's far outweigh the positives. My only worry is I am going to Thailand/Pattaya next year and end up drunk in Trevors Buzzing Bar & then wake up in my hotel room with a couple of ladies ( I hope they are ladies ) and a signed contract I now own a bar. : (

Haha me too if I was given a free bar I’d say no thanks it’s just not worth the hassle. Over the years heard many takes of woe when a falang buys a bar, some have done ok, so far, but that can change at any time.

I have owned several restaurants in the UK and your correct they are a headache. But they can be very lucrative. Enabled me to retire early in life. Now would I want a bar/restaurant in Thailand not on your life. One of the main reasons is you cant own either only rent. If you do well they stuff the rent up. 1 in 1000 will earn a few BHT the rest will just end up loosing monies. It's a mugs game.

Steve is a great guy and charitably very supportive. I met him a couple of years ago and he did tell me he was from Abergavenny. I even remember talking to him about the 'Marty Wilde' song which he seemed to know well, he never mentioned any songs about Newport......are there any? I had a great night there with the 'Black Dog Band'' providing music, and the place was rammed. I wish Steve all the best with reopening and hope that things will return to 'normal' soon. The Triangle Bar is one that deserves to survive the pandemic and go on to greater strength and prosperity in the future. Good Luck Steve, I will see you again next year, with another new guitar for the band to try out.

But I have never had the pleasure of meeting Steve so hopefully in my next trip. So happy to know this bar will survive . For me the Triangle Bar, Pattaya Beer Garden and Sailor Bar soi 8 are the only places I can guarantee you I will never miss no matter what. Once again Trev thank you for making my day.

I find it interesting that - and a tad puzzling why - so many people are so keen to criticise the Thai authorities. "Why were/are bars closed but the music festival was allowed to go ahead?" and "How does having a snack in a bar prevent the virus spreading?" they ask. "Bizarre!", they exclaim, "Only in Thailand!", they assert.
Correct me if I am wrong, but during the various lockdowns in Europe many pilot events took place, some of which have been shown to have become 'super-spreader' events. Was there not a huge football match in the UK during one such lockdown? Were FIFA officials from Europe not allowed to attend? Is it not the case that not only were they permitted to circumvent quarantine but did not even have to be tested? So Brits can ask why a music event (which was a pilot event) was allowed to go ahead in Pattaya while bars had to remain shut, but why are they not asking why, in the UK, a huge football match was allowed to take place while pubs were shut?
Also, all bars, cafes, and restaurants were closed in Europe during lockdown. However, McDonald's outlets were permitted to remain open, and they were even given a special concession whereby they could accept cash payments, while any other 'essential' service could only accept cashless/contactless payments. So, why are the very same Brits who ask how having a bit of food in a bar in Pattaya is meant to prevent the spread of the virus not also asking how having a milkshake in McDonald's - and paying for it in cash - rather than a beer in a pub - and paying for it via contactless payment - is meant to halt the spread of the virus? Gyms in the UK were forced to shut during lockdown but fast-food/junk food outlets were permitted to remain open. Which is better for your health? Bizarre! Only in the UK!
Also, is it not the case that the government were having parties while the nation was in lockdown? How does being in No.10 Downing Street prevent the spread of the virus? Bizarre! Only in the UK!
As for people criticising this Welsh chap for 'toeing the line', I can only assume they have never owned and/or run their own business in Thailand before, or indeed anywhere in the world. This guy knows full well that Thailand is an amazing country full of lovely people - I have had a base there since 2003, so nigh on 20 years now - but it is *not* the sort of country in which you want to run afoul of the law. Brits who go to Pattaya for 2 weeks once a year and who have never invested in themselves but who instead work for someone else 50 weeks a year will never understand that, and if they think the Thai authorities are too 'harsh' then they might wish to look at the powers the British Customs and Excise Department have. They are a law unto themselves.

I am though *SHOCKED* by most Western states' reaction to 'Omicron'! (Note how they no longer refer to 'the Omicron variant of Co-vid'; but just to 'Omicron'! It is a *new* virus and thus warrants *new* restrictions and necessitates a *new* vaccine!)
The South African doctor who first detected 'Omicron' is baffled why the UK government is reacting the way it is! Countries in Southern Africa are stating it is *mild*! The PM in the UK however says they must put to one side the idea it is mild! Why? He says one person (one!) has died 'with' Omicron, not *from* Omicron and the country is panicking!

The golden rules of Pattaya: 1. Never ever even think about buying a bar ( unless you are so rich you can afford to lose it ) 2. Never believe 99% of what a bar girl tells you. 3. Never date a bar girl ( you can take the girl out of the bar but you can’t take the bar out of the girl )
    4. Play the game don’t let the game play you. 5. Never isolate yourself. 6. Never fight a Thai ( They have no shame fighting back ten on one )
Stick by these rules you should be ok.

What a nice bloke - more power to him! (Superb insights to Soi Chaiyapoon ownership....)
That's the first time I've heard that you couldn't bring back shoes or children from East Germany. Köpenick was my destination once through Checkpoint Charlie, all the Ostmarks to buy people drinks with. I empathise with stopping music when you've done it as a job. +1 (edit: the Stasi Museum is a full day out.)

What a moving interview with Steve! Hard times for most people the world over. We went through the lockdown for months here in LA as well. However we managed to stay afloat and we’re super glad we did. People came back in droves when things reopened again. I really hope the same will happen to the Triangle Bar and to Pattaya!! Cheers!!
