  • Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discuss the use of prayer beads (masbahah, tasbeeh) in Islam. Dr. Shabir explains that prayer beads are used for counting praises of God, similar to an abacus. The beads typically come in a string of 99, with a marker at every 33 beads. Dr. Shabir demonstrates how Muslims recite specific praises of God (Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar) using the beads, reaching a total of 100 recitations. He mentions that some Muslims may consider the use of prayer beads an innovation (bid'ah), as it wasn't present in the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who, according to tradition, advised his daughter Fatima to use the formula for easing tiredness. Dr. Shabir also showcases modern electronic prayer counters, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the devotional aspect rather than counting numbers. The significance of 33 times is explained as three sets of 33 plus 1, totaling 100, a round number. Dr. Safiyyah highlights the mind-body connection and the role of prayer beads in keeping individuals focused on their devotions.

Bump that up against the stories I have heard about Pakistan, S A and Iran and I have to wonder Who is practicing the Real Islam. Alhamduilah.

@@BruceWSimsThat has been my impression too. Some people retain the outward trappings of their culture and regard faith as a spiritual enterprise, not to be confused with wholesale Arabisation, e.g. niqabs, thobes, abayas, etc. _Urf_ (local custom) is something Islamic theologians have long respected. Imam Abu Hanifa said you may even pray _salah_ in your own language, not in Arabic, if doing so increases one's _khushoo'_ (fervour) even where a worshipper does understand Arabic. A radical statement today, but just goes to show how much of modern Islam is little more than interpretation.
To see the drastic social changes ushered in by the new Saudi crown prince, watch the clip "Rave in Saudi" by DW Documentaries. Jaw dropping stuff: it showcases the music scene in Riyadh featuring Saudi female DJs with tattoos. Concerts are all the rage. The hijab is no longer compulsory to wear and women dress as they please. The morality police have been disbanded. And private beaches allow bikinis. Saudi authorities turn a blind eye to the booze and drugs youngsters partake in. Not all the changes are positive, but most are. Watch also Bloomberg's video on the subject, "The Saudi Rave".

Unfortunately this darker side finds its way into the media much more than our better side. My sense is that if both side of our country got equal time, countries around the world would be more observant that Americans are just like everybody else; no better or worse. @QuranSpeaks Dr. Shabir, you noted that the first set of prayer beads had 11 beads followed by an ornamental. Before that, you explained how each form of dhikr (subhanAllah, Alhamdulilah, ‎Allah Akbar, etc) is repeated 33 times. It would seem that the ornamentals might be there so that one could still do the full dhikr while not having to carry around such a large set, since the dhikr could be said three times using one section of the set before moving on to the next section. Thank you for the informative videos! May Allah Almighty bless and keep you, Safiyyah, and all the crew behind the scenes forever!

If you keep the beads in your hand, it keeps you counting. When a person is without it, forget to count or remember Allah in many cases, though it is innovation, it keeps one engaged to remembering Allah. In most cases men become engaged in gossiping, talking or other sorts of unnecessary works, when this rosery is in hand, it reminds one of one's duty, i.e. the remembrance of Allah.

Verily, the fingers will be questioned and made to testify. Do not be unmindful such that you forget the mercy of Allah.”
