Bruce Lee NEVER Wanted Anyone to See This REAL Fight

  • In Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, there's this scene in Thailand on the last day of filming for The Big Boss where Johnny Sun's brother, Luke, challenges Bruce Lee to a fight. Bruce Lee beat the brakes off Luke, and then he rips open the camera and starts tearing up the film.
Y'all know the scene I'm talking about? Well, what if I told you that really happened?
So I've had a lot of people ask me about this fight in Dragon: The Bruce Lee story -- did Bruce Lee really fight some guy in Thailand and tear up some of the film from "The Big Boss?" "Is there a missing scene from the Big Boss where Bruce Lee had a real fight?"
As for the fight with Luke Sun, yeah...that did not happen. Johnny and Luke Sun were a characters they made up for the movie...I guess so they wouldn't have any trouble from Wong Jack Man.
So if Luke Sun wasn't a real person, then how come I said there really was a fight like the one in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story? Well see, the real fight didn't happen while Bruce was filming "The Big Boss."

I read decades ago in a martial arts book that Bruce was having a sparring session with one of his closest friends/martial artists (if not the closest). The other guy got through Bruce's defense and whatever, and Bruce went over the top in retaliation to the point where others had to step in. Later, one of the training group noticed Bruce was missing, and he found him sitting alone in another room with his head bowed. On being asked if he was alright, Bruce conceded that his greatest weakness was a bad temper and he had lost it. (Paraphrasing -- it was long ago I read this.)

I trained in Wing Chun back in the day and got to have dinner with Wang Kiu who was One of Bruce’s “Big Brothers” who would train and drill him under Yip Man. Bruce Lee was apparently a legit terror as a child (around 14 or 15 years old). Not a bully, but fearless.
He was the youngest student in the school and always fought older/larger fighters from other schools. I wish I could remember more stories but you know… too many kicks to the head 😂.
What I do recall is that Bruce Lee’s first nickname was actually “water dragon” (Don’t recall if Wang said why). At this time in Hong Kong, martial arts schools would put ads in the newspapers challenging other schools saying things like “Our school will provide dental care for any fighter from {competing school}! We will remove all of your teeth FOR FREE.
Students would show up to the school and challenge for a fight at the school, or if they wanted other schools/fighters to see they would challenge Ip Man students to public (illegal) fights held on top of buildings across Hong Kong. Sometimes the challenges were direct to certain students, but most often it was a “bring your best” and “fight whoever shows up”. Despite being young and gawky (tall and skinny for his age) Bruce almost always went, and frequently fought for “the honor of the school and glory of (their style of) martial arts”.
Bruce apparently fought and won often enough that a newspaper article about these challenge fights was written and either the man writing it typo’d Lee’s nickname, “水龍” or “Water Dragon” (the characters for water and little look similar when written quickly/sloppily) or wanted to emphasize that Lee was among the youngest martial artists fighting by writing his nickname as “小龍” or “Little Dragon”.
According to Wang, the nickname stuck and Bruce later adopted the name “Lee Sui-lung” (李小龍) or “Little Dragon Lee”.

If say you were to see Bruce Lee (mind you he died in 1973) really fighting you are going to see a lot of very short quick movements probably (if you can see them at all without video/film and slowing it down).
Back when I was doing JKD (from a 2nd generation JKD teacher) I'd see people practice Wing Chun traps a lot.
Almost never using a traditional WC stance, but using traps. Also people using similar style traps in Kali (Filipino stick fighting).
That is where you might see it. A good reference is to watch some Dan Inosanto training videos. Watch him trap peoples arms, etc., which can just look like sort of a tap or a push.
You can actually see some in some of the movies. Of of recall without watching them recently, you can see Bruce intercept punches using WC styled traps.
Also I think some of the leg trapping/jamming stuff you can see in some movies is from WC.

I appreciate the accurate stories/details of these Bruce Lee alleged fights & challenges you present. I’m a first generation Bruce Lee fan & I remember when The Green Hornet series first came on TV. As a young kid I was amazed at Bruce Lee as Kato I never saw fighting skills like that or speed. At the time his speed & skill was the most noticeable- the power he created I found out about later on in the 1970’s as most fans did. Now a lot of these challenges on the movie set I found out about years ago some of course were fiction, but back then there was no CZcams (which w/your channel & a couple of others are catching up to these stories plus the interviews). I found out about Bruce Lee’s fights/challenges from Jesse Glovers book- which I believe is accurate & the Robert Clouse book & from some of the Chinese imported Bruce Lee books/magazines, but you had to weed out the real from the made up stories. The challenge on the set of Enter the Dragon from one of the extras that was harassing Bruce- I saw the pictures of that from a martial arts book years ago. Bruce was about to throw a kick at the extra in one of the photos, plus there was about 4 or 5 other photos. I also knew about the fight that was filmed by Mr.Wong on the ETD set but it disappeared or destroyed (can you imagine if it is ever found). The supposed fight on the Fist of Fury set w/The Muay Thai fighter I thought might have happened-but not like in the “Dragon” movie which was not accurate at all. As you stated Bruce Lee was challenged daily & had to ignore most of these, I know he upset the traditional masters but we all know Bruce had to incorporate other styles Choy Li Fut /Judo ect. Into Jeet Kune Do, Because he couldn’t catch up to his Wing Chun seniors William Cheung & Wong Shun-lueng in Hong Kong. Besides all that Bruce was gifted, he trained & taught a lot of tournament fighters( we all know who) and picked up a lot from other masters too because he was smart & physically able to do so! One last thing I remember reading in Jesse Glovers book how he & Bruce went to either a tournament or demonstration & Bruce was impressed with a Japanese karate black belts display of kicks. If I remember correctly Bruce met up w/this black belt after the demo-Bruce showed him his kick he & was not impressed. The martial artist then proceeded to teach Bruce his kicking technique which he learned from him! Again take this for what it’s worth I believe Mr.Glover is a reliable person also Taky Kimura too. Keep up the good work & info, thanks GoldenbellTraining.

I never picked up fights with anyone. I was in Martial Arts because of the beauty, the form, and dexterity of the art. But I did have some one pick up a fight with me. The guy was young and experienced. I was already a black belt, and I was exercising with the punching bag. I get a round house from behind on my kidneys and he said, "this is the chubby guy I want to beat up". Japanese Go Ju Ryu does stand up fighting, but it also has ground fighting. I calmly accepted his challenge. He threw a sidekick. I side stepped on him. Put him on a bear hug. Lifted him off his feet pushed and spun around with him landing face down on the concrete tilled floor and me on top of him. I jumped to my fight as he crawled away. I told him that I never wanted to see him in this dojo again. He had the habit of not cutting his large toenail. Which I had requested he'd do. A round houses the large toenail can cut like a knife. He was a thug by doing a round house to the kidneys from behind while I was doing something else. That was a cheap shot. He never came back to the dojo.

Wong Jack-man was a larger fighter which wasn’t new to Bruce, but Wong was also incredibly skilled which meant physicality became a much bigger problem in the fight than Bruce had faced before.

I've read up the fight he had with the Thai Boxer on the set of the Big Boss. Tony Liu told gave his accounts of a fight he had with a Thai Boxer but Lee Kwan gave another account of a Thai Boxer that challenged him. So he was challenged more than once.
The reality is, when you reach a certain level, you're eventually gonna get challenged and it's matter of what whether you feel it's worth it or not. I'm a practitioner of the Jeet Kune Do fighting system, so I can relate to all the stuff that Bruce Lee went through because i've been challenged several times myself and the ones I did accept, I made these people change their minds. Most of the time it's usually internet keyboard warriors that would never show their face, and the day we live in, you're gonna get that more. But any local person that wanted to experience Jeet Kune Do up close, i've made some believers since there's so many who don't believe it works against other trained fighters. So this is a constant thing that you get is challenges. But a lot of the times I won't pay attention because most people are just looking for attention.

    • @GoldenbellTraining

Yes, it's usually people with a black sash in "Keyboard Kungfu" who talk the most about how nothing works, this person can't fight, and "Xu Xiaodong can beat everyone."
Many of my classmates have tested their stuff against other styles, and they've been asked to sometimes teach Muay Thai and BJJ guys, even though those are "the only effective styles." 🤣
I hope all of my plans for this channel work out so that I can one day tell my senior classmates that I'm offering anyone a free vacation to Thailand in exchange for a few hours of private instruction until I can get up to speed to do some light sparring at some of the Muay Thai gyms around here.
I'm not looking to beat anyone, but if I can not get completely destroyed by guys looking to get contracts with One Championship, I should be more than capable dealing with a random drunk tourist during high season.

The Dragon movie is full of inaccuracies but you also got it wrong here. I saw in interview with a guy ( I can't remember his name but he was an American guy who was on the set of The Big Boss and trying to get Bruce to work with him on a movie (I think it was Enter The Dragon)). The story-according to the guy who was there-was that the fight did take place during the filming of The Big Boss. It wasn't on set. Bruce was walking out of his hotel room to go film for the day. Some other people working on the film were loading their cameras into a van as another van sped towards Bruce. The doors of the van popped open and some triad gang members picked a fight with Bruce because he wouldn't make movies for the triads. The triads had a heavy influence on the film industry in Hong Kong. According to this eye witness, Bruce refused to concede to their threats and a fight broke out. The camera men started rolling footage of the fight. Bruce handled the attackers and then walked over to the camera man and ripped the film out of the camera. The reason that Bruce did this was to not have footage of him embarrassing the triads. Bruce never spoke of this because he knew that if the triads were perceived to have lost respect, they would have to come at him even harder or even kill him to save face. This incident, is also the main premise for the conspiracy theory that Bruce was poisoned in a hotel room by a Hong Kong director that Bruce was meeting with. If you haven't heard about that, basically the triads paid and or blackmailed the director to poison Bruce because he had disrespected the triads by refusing to work for them
