i saw this band with david sanchez(no relation) on tenor sax. lincoln theater, univ of htfd (ct) around this time. my impression of this drum solo then was that it was so musical he may have been sight reading it. nah. just brilliant, like metheny's solo. i felt it was musically the best concert i ever witnessed (and ive been to over 300 rock, jazz , blues and r&b shows). thank you for posting.
The best of the BEST! One of the vey very few things I've ever wondered about with Metheny is his musical infatuation with Sanchez--not a hater, I just have my other faves--but this video goes a long way to answering my questions! Brilliant playing!!
I had the incredible experience of sitting right in front of Sanchez to see him go to work on this tune (I think it was The Way Up tour) and I was just wowed. Like you say, I'm a little ambivalent about him sometimes (still a Wertico lover) but this (and Birdman) made me think again...
I love all of Metheny's fast songs, like this one, Jaco and several others. They are so much easier to digest by people like me, who are not very knowledgeable on Jazz.
My utmost respect to Metheny and all the top shelf musicians priviledged to play alongside him but "Lone Jack" without the astounding technical virtuosity and fire of Lyle Mays piano playing leaves me wanting....
Interesting that Metheny plays the trio versions of this tune a half step up from the original Group recording. I’m guessing B minor is easier for Metheny to improvise in than Bb minor (2 sharps vs 5 flats).
There is a Reason Pat will go down as one of the all time great guitarist and among the best ever to play jazz.
That drum solo fucking blows me away every time Sanchez has a nice balance of old school classic and modern contemporary influences in his playing
This is the first drum solo to make me weep. Real tears.
Best Lone Jack recording I’ve come across and I’ve listened to many over many years.
Damn these are world class musicians of the highest order brilliant players

it was the second year of college I bought this album and this is one of my best jazz collections!

How is it possible to not be in love with Sanchez?
Lane, have you seen the movie "BIRDMAN"? Sanchez did the whole score as a drum solo! Was only rejected for an Oscar nomination on a technicality.

Wow that solo. So technical and yet so felt...
what a mind bending drum solo!

Exactly! I feel the same way. Love the higher energy songs. ✌️

Ayayay el baterista Antonio Sánchez está muy bien!
Is it just my imagination, or they play the impossible...? ;) Great performance!!!

No cowbells were harmed during the recording of this footage...
Sik drum solo!!
Christian McBride
Come Pat, you didn't have to dress up for us LOL! Just kidding. Pat is the best of the best for well over 40+ years.

Might be he likes to use the harmonics and open strings too.
@@thehont8648 Quite possible, yes
Metheny is a musician's musician. Too technical for my taste but definitely world class!
McBride, por Dios!
Antonio Sánchez is god
Ummmm
WTF...
i don't like drum solos, never did, never will... anyway, great drum solo!
Sanchez's playing is just jaw-dropping.. still I don't like he's style, just not my cup of tea.
+Gerardo McCabe I agree, technically brilliant but far too complex. Give me Paul Wertico any day as he was also brilliant, but less flash.
