I bought CODA as a kid -- it was the only time I ever got to buy a "new" Led Zeppelin album in my life -- I've always liked it and never understood why some of those tracks didn't make it to In Through the Out Door, which -- like you said -- is lackluster. Couldn't agree more on what you said about LZ playing the blues. "Since I've been loving you" is great, but the early blues songs around 69 are pretty boring. I love all LZ, it is one of my favorite bands! But "Presence" is my least favorite - Achilles Last Stand is a great song, very influential for the NWBHM. The Coda deluxe edition is great. One of the few I can really recommend, there is a lot of interesting bonus stuff. The other deluxe album versions usually offer only some early mixes of the album songs or instrumental versions of it.

Presence is an outlier in a way because JPJ didn’t have any keyboard parts or any instrumentation other than bass on the entire album for whatever reason. He made up for it on their last studio album because by that time Jimmy was all strung out and he had to step up, but Jimmy’s guitar work carried Presence and I also love In Through The Outdoor because I was always a fan of all JPJ’s contributions to their music. He was the unsung hero of Led Zeppelin imo.
CODA was also a great album with some classic tracks such as Darlene which easily stands among their greatest songs among others on that album.
I guess it’s a bit different for me because being a drummer myself, Bonham is one of my primary influences as a player and he was consistently great throughout their discography as well as the live albums, so as far as all Zeppelin’s work goes, I’m all in.

Presence was the first Led Zep album I ever owned and it remains my favourite, and has my no 1 favourite Led Zep song in Achilles Last Stand, I think it gets short shrift because it came after Physical Graffitti that is 1 side too long, was more stripped back and isnt a critics or critical favourite. My second favourite Zep album is Houses of the Holy - although I never bought any of the zep albums when I was young apart from Presence, 4 and Physical Graffitti (which I sold because I needed to raise money probably to buy a Rush or a Rainbow album). I did get the two Remasters box sets so I could eventually programme the albums from the CDs. As you say Coda has some good stuff on it as well and the Remasters set mashed together Bonzos Montreux with Moby Dick. Not a great fan of studio drum solos though and I am also not a great lover of blues rock, and so can take or leave the first couple of albums prefer 2 over 1 - contentious and sacriligious as that is, its my taste - not a big Free or Bad Company fan either.

God bless Andy for your great words about Coda. Wonderful. When I was young in the 80`s I felt I was being force fed Zep 1,2 and 4. And as a lad didn`t want people telling me what was great and what I should listen to. Then Coda came out and Boom! I understood. As a drummer Poor Tom knocked me out. The hats on Darlene fascinated me and Bonzo`s Montreux to this day, may be the only rock drum solo song I still love to listen to. Of coarse by the mid 80`s I was a Zeppelin freak. Listening and loving everything. Is this my favorite Zep Album? ....no ( That would be Physical Graffiti ) But I can honestly say. I still listen to Coda more than any other Zeppelin. I hope to cover Darlene on a future project.

The unfiltered opinion of a pro who played with an icon of rock is uncommon.
    Thanks for what you do.
Love going down memory lane. I just re-listened to those records.
There is a lot of great music on these albums.
I remember when Presence came out, .
At the time we didn’t understand it.
My buddy bought it, we went to his house to hear it.
I thought the first track sounded like Chris Squire and Steve Howe were sitting in.
We were waiting for that big “ Heartbreaker “ / “Black Dog” thing.
I hear it now and it is great music.
Made me think about an album called “Outrider “
Not sure if you have heard it.
It was a different direction for Jimmy Page,
And many people I talk to think it is weak because it’s not Led Zeppelin.
    I really enjoy it.

I started playing blues in 1969 on a borrowed guitar. You are spot on about "white guys need to do something unique with the form in order to make it work" - Zep are not the only ones to evolve blues in their own way. When I play, for instance, Spoonful, I play it differently every time to fit my mood. My vocals fit whatever mood is appropriate. Sometimes I play it just a hint uptempo, a hint of swing, sometimes Jimi slow blues style, sometimes straight Howlin' Wolf style. Blues, for me, serve the song, not the other way around. How about punk-acid-blues? Big Brother and the Holding Company are interesting (I love 'em!) blues interpreters. Mike Bloomfield just played straight blues - listen to his side of Super Session - and there is no finer guitar playing on Earth, it still gives me chills. Al Kooper really nailed that session. Agree on Zep. I just skip over the crap songs.

I really like Presence, but not heard Coda. I appreciate the fact that you just go with your intuitive taste without worrying about aligning it with the supposed ‘received wisdom’. I have a relationship with Zep that even fewer share which is that I think The Song Remains The Same is easily their best,( the original vinyl version not the remastered stuff with the different live takes).
Coming from a soul/funk/disco/jazz fusion background I wasn’t overly impressed with rock music back in 79 when was 13 years old. But I got obsessed with listening to bass players …. From whatever genre. I was with my rock mates in the summer holidays when they put SRTS on. I was blown away and thought ….ohhhhh this is why everyone raves about this band. The live versions of Celebration Day, Song Remains The Same, Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, No Quarter, Stairway To Heaven, and Whole Lotta Love are up there with pretty much anything for me,( obviously there are pieces of music that I gravitate to more, but it’s hard to criticise the quality or creativity and delivery on those tracks …. Rock n Roll and Moby Dick … less so).
If I’d heard any of the studio albums up to that point I’m not sure they’d have had anywhere near the same impact, probably because of that over reliance on blues and folk,( which I realise is really odd when talking about Zeppelin).
Great vid though as always ✌️

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer honestly Andy take a listen to the original vinyl version. The rhythm section of John and John is completely funked up and as snappy as hell. To blow the mind even more……. Page is right in there with them and is playing like an acid fuelled rock version of Nile Rodgers crossed with Pete Townsend , five years before Chic came into being.
My way into this album on very first listen was via John Paul Jones and the Prog funk take on hard rock,( which ultimately must include Bonham obviously), but the larger take away was Page,( still don’t get the guy 100% to be honest on the totality of his guitar output …. Other players always sounded better at different areas of expertise to me. Sabbath’s riffs were always more monolithic and powerful to me, and less blues based soloists always sounded better), who as well as the aforementioned rhythm playing, stepped up and played solos that sounded like they had more in common with Zappa than a Clapton or other more solidly blues based guitarist.

I'm excited about this clip. I agree so much about several points. 'Coda' has tracks from ITTOD sessions, that would have easily elevated that album to all other LZ classics.
"Bonzo Montreux' is fantastic. It's one of the few drum solo tunes, that you can almost hum along to.
And also not a big champion of LZ early Blues. It's the only reason LZII suffers a bit IMO. Once they took it into minor key like 'Since I been lovin" or "Tea for 1" ;they discovered new territory.

No. If somebody can't hear and feel the frustrations and pent up energies from all of their personal events from the last two ears, I don't know I can convince them. Listen carefully - this is arguably Bozno's most explosive album ever, Jones unveiled his new active Alembic sound, Plant's focus because of the cast on his lef and the wheelchair is incredible and JImmy unleashed his "guitar army" orchestra (13 gtr tracks on Achilles, several on Nobody's Fault). No acoustic? That does not automatically make something good or bad. This is the best diamond-hard rock from the mid-'70's IMHO.

3:40 ... Jimmy Page actually did that earlier with Zeppelin IV with zero writing on the front or back. Atlantic Records supposedly threw a fit about that but Page wanted to prove a point that the group's name didn't need to be shown anywhere. He obviously did something right with Zeppelin IV selling 30 Million plus or minus a few million. Zeppelin never released a bad album which not many bands can make that claim. Anywhere from very good 3 Stars (Coda) to the 5 Star masterpiece that is Physical Graffiti, my All-Time favorite album by any artist, ever. A band for the ages..

When Coda was released, in 1982, the only song l recall hearing on the radio was “Darlene.” I had a friend who was a huge Zep fan, and l recall hearing the record at his house. He also had a ginormous LZ poster on his wall with JPJ with his three neck “guitar,” and Pagey with his trusty double neck… amongst a bunch of other pictures. At any rate, Coda’s best track is probably the heavy swagger of “Wearing and Tearing.” It’s a good album, perhaps not as cohesive as some other Zep records, due to the songs coming from different eras of the band. Coda has aged better, over the past forty years.
I feel the same about Zeppy III. As a Queens yewt, the acoustic nature was too subtle for my then immature brain to fathom. We wanted to rock out, and there wasn’t much material in the way of “Immigrant Song,” and “Celebration Day.” Our cavemen minds dug those tracks, but not so much the more mellow fare. As the decades have worn on, I’ve immersed myself more in immense intricacies in numbers like “Friends,” “Tangerine,” and “Gallows Pole.” Another excellent platter.
To me, Presence was always akin to the bastard son of Physical Graffiti. PG is my favorite LZ elpee, but Presence still has moments of greatness. My two faves are “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,” and “Achilles Last Stand.” Bonzo’s drumming on the latter is incredible, those fills throughout the song… wow. And l rally love Page’s guitar solos, sounds and licks on the former tune.
All in all, l feel Led Zeppelin never released a truly terrible album, there are myriad delights all throughout their storied career.
Keep up the sterling work, and keep growin’ ya hair!
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!

As a progger, and a contrarian, I’m a fan of ITTOD. It was the first Zep album that my aforementioned (now late) friend and l had heard/purchased when it was released as a new album. “Carouselambra” is in my top five LZ tunes of all time. I’m also a big mark for “All My Love,” which many would label a “softy.”* l love JPJ’s synth solo and it’s a great tribute to Plant’s son. l liked the fact that Jones and Percy sort of spearheaded this particular platter, as James was a wee bit busy with (allegedly) other pursuits.

My least favourite is Presence although its still decent. It's a strange one for Zeppelin as there is little that is new or different on it.
Achilles Last Stand is just an attempt to redo or expand on The Song Remains The Same. Same with Tea For One with Since I've Been Loving You.
The only song I really love on Presence is Hots On For Nowhere, because it's totally fresh and unlike anything they ever did.
I prefer In Through The Out Door to Presence because it has some new and interesting ideas and in the Zeppelin tradition its unlike anything they did before. That's what made Zeppelin great. Their ability to evolve and change. I just don't see that much on Presence and the things they did do on Presence they had already done better before.
    Just my thoughts.
    Cheers.

Here's a little game I play occasionally to keep my blues interesting. What would B.B. King do with such a crude number as Spoonful and it's a whole different song. Or Prince, or is he too good for blues? I am not a fan of blues superstars who crank everything to 11 from start to finish at superspeed. Kenny Wayne Sheppard, your boy Gary, that other guy. Eric needs a guy like me to strip his blues down to the bones, I'm sure he's terrified of me. He's still a fan, you know, of the form. "I'm Dennis John Mason, blues traveler, pleased to meet you, Mister Eric Patrick C., now let me show you how Crossrads can sound truly epic without the pyrotechnics..." and he'd punch me in the nose. No, he wouldn't. He has a house close to where I type. I never see him. I met George Harrison in 1977, I say that a lot just to remind myself that it was real.

'In Through The Out Door' was disappointing, largely due the the annoying 'synthesizer on accordion setting' feel of the keyboards. For me there was a real drop off in quality after the fourth album, with 'Houses of The Holy'. The mix on that album sounds totally anemic in places; some tracks sound unfinished; Plant's vocals are too forward in the mix; and Bonham's powerhouse drumming isn't forward enough (Bonham's drumming never could be too forward). I wish they would have left off b-side filler like 'D'Yer Mak'er' and 'The Crunge'. 'Presence' definitely sounds much better, and 'Achilles Last Stand' and 'For Your Life' in particular are absolutely classic Led Zeppelin. It's unfair to go after 'Coda', because it was a collection of unreleased tracks rather than a proper album. Taken that way it's pretty good. Now if you want to shoot my opinion then here's some ammunition for you: I'm HEAVILY biased in favour of the first four albums, with III being my favourite...

      @AndyEdwardsDrummer  Před rokem

I would agree on the whole...the first four are remarkable. I agree about the production on Houses and there are some strange tunes on there for sure. Physical Graffitti is also a collection of leftovers like Coda. Most of it is incredible but there is filler there. Presence is fantastic IMO and In Through The Outdoor does not contain one classic Zep tune for me. The best is probably All Of My Love but that is an anomalie in their catalogue.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Cheers Andy. Now, imagine if HOTH had been a double album that left off the aforementioned filler tracks, and one side contained 'Houses of The Holy' (from Physical Graffiti), the tracks re-recorded in India ('Friends', 'Four Sticks') and 'Kashmir' - in that running order... HOTH might then have been regarded as Led Zeppelin's 'prog-ish masterpiece'.

I remember when Presence and Coda were released. I liked Presence more. It was released when I was still a big LZ fan, though. By the time Coda came out, my musical taste had evolved. Unfortunately, Coda didn't get me as excited about a new LZ record as their earlier albums had. It wasn't that I didn't like it, I just needed something else.
Thanks Andy for helping me revisit those times. Everybody... now that used CDs are so cheap, it's an excellent time to update your music collection with the ones you missed first time around (if you haven't started already).

@@juliemanarin4127 Let me explain. I've listened to popular music for 50 years and have loved all kinds. When I listen to Zep now it's not the same. I find myself almost entirely focused on the drumming. I didn't do that before. If I take a CD with me in the car, it would far more likely be one of Robert's recent folky albums. Sorry, that's just where I'm at now. What drew me to Andy is his expert knowledge of Fusion. He's been very helpful with filling in gaps in my collection. Don't hate me. Presence is my favorite album for the same reason you mentioned---just the band in all of its glorious raw power. Drumming and guitar riffs are second to none. But here's the rub---the only thing that no one EVER talks about, is unfortunately, Plant sings kinda flat throughout the whole thing. Especially on Achilles... how come no one ever talks about this? You can hear it starting on Physical... all the albums after that, Plant is singing flat. I guess at that point, you're surrounded by a bunch of yesmen, no outside producers to tell him to do a better take (Page produced everything)---shameful and lazy for a band of that caliber.

Let me ruminate on this... a drummer offered a post by Robert Plant, and an open fan of Led Zeppelin's music, regards 'Moby Dick' as 'too long' and in essence as 'what's the fuss about'. Hmmm. Interesting you choose 'Bonzo's Montreaux' as your preference. I wonder if it's a generational 'thing' going on there. Would you by any chance be in that 50 something, NME post punk box? If so no wonder 'white men playing the blues; is not your thing, nor drum solos, that 'go on and on'. Such was the diatribe of scorn offered to your youth-full selves by the music press during those days. I'm amazed, given you have worked with Mr Plant that you are unable to see how Zeppelin's version of 'I Can't Quit You Babe' is anything other than some form of 'wannabe' reproduction. I guess music truly is in the ears of the listener.

If anything, Robert is the one with the post punk attitude...and anyone who watches this channel will know how much I love drums solos. I was once a drum clinician and did solos for a living. I have released an album of drum solos. My problem with Moby Dick is it is simple and boring...I also toured Europe playing 'white blues' with Ian Parker...check out my video on identity politics...basically your assumptions are pretty wrong. I love Since I've Been Loving You, When The Levee Breaks and Tea for One. Watch again and you may get the points I'm making here...

Thanks for the reply. I speculated, and was surprised by your regard of 'Moby Dick'. I enjoy your dives into Zeppelin, and it's interesting to have a musician's take on their incredible music. I understand the point on the legitimacy of people simply duplicating blues standards. A topic that was cited by music journos who leapt upon the Punk bandwagon. Maybe you take a differing view on this, but although 'I Can't Quit You Babe' is very different to the likes of SIBLY, I feel it to be more than just a 'copy and paste' blues outing. Which brings to mind a related question. Would you feel equally unmoved or uncomfortable listening to Rory Gallagher's work? Anyway I digress. Getting back to Bonham's MD I guess the stylus was often lifted and replaced for the final track. Fans could maybe not relate to a stand-alone drum performance, but it's inclusion was of its time. As to your view of MD being 'simple' I'm baffled by that, it would be interesting to hear what other drummers think. Perhaps a video from you on this subject?

  • @LeeLucas
    @LeeLucas Před rokem

I like Coda though it's not what I would classify as a proper album and more like a compilation album that was released not that long after Bonham's death. Presence and In Through The Outdoor I would say are very much mediocre albums and far from solid albums. The worst album this band ever made in my opinion is Houses Of The Holy. They say you should never judge a book by its cover and when it comes to that album they are absolutely right. The cover although done by Hipgnosis looks more like a Roger Dean cover and I personally think it's the best album cover of all Zepp albums. But the album is complete GARBAGE! Here is my twopence worth of the opening track.
"The opening track on the album “The Song Remains the Same” sees the band trying to do what they do best in the way of making a good rock song. Notice I did say the word “Trying” because quite frankly this is not by any means like some of the classics we have seen on their previous albums. But what even ruins it even more than anything, is their so-called new layering and production techniques. To be perfectly honest the live version of this song is very good and in fact 100 times better than the disastrous job they have done on this studio album. Now it does not take even an idiot to realise that Robert Plant has a really great rock voice. So just WTF did they process his voice so badly on this song.
Honestly, he sounds bloody dreadful, and it’s as if he was sucking on a tube of helium whilst singing it. If this is what they call new mixing techniques, quite frankly they can shove them up their arse as far as I am concerned. It’s got to be the worst-produced song I have heard on a Led Zeppelin album. Just hearing Plant sing the song’s title makes me want to smash the record up. Pinky and Perky sound better FFS! and yes Plant’s voice has been speeded up.
“The Song Remains the Same” was originally intended to be an instrumental track however Plant quite liked it and wanted to contribute words and vocals to it. To be honest on this studio album it would have been a damn site better if they left it as an instrumental track having heard what they did with the guy’s voice. There is no doubt that this song on the live album of the same title does sound really great, and this song would have been a contender for the top spot on this album. But no way could I give it to this studio version I am afraid it’s totally dreadful and unplayable.
To be honest, I am well surprised that Robert Plant never complained in the first place and let it be released like this. Honestly, if somebody did that to my voice I would be chasing them around the studio with a double-barrel shotgun" 😊😊😊.
