I'm not a big Elton John fan, but the title track of Empty Sky is one of the best things he ever did. I love the early David Bowie stuff; obviously nothing like his mature work, but it has so much charm. The Yes debut is terrific.

Empty Sky is a decent enough track, but it out-stays its welcome at over eight minutes long.

I love the title track. Also the bonus tracks on the later reissues are better than the main album IMO.Lady Samantha, Just Like Strange Rain and it's me that you need are very good. If you want to hear truly bad Elton albums try Victim of Love, Duets or The Lockdown Sessions.

It would make more sense if it’s called “underwhelming debuts” rather than “terrible debuts”. If so, I agree with most of these picks, even though I do like some of these albums like David Bowie’s debut, Genesis’ debut, Blur’s debut etc. Prince’s first two albums are pretty damn good but i guess it’s not purple rain.
But, how the heck are Yes and Journey on this list? The Yes debut album is one of my favourite Yes albums. The Journey debut album might be their best album - this was Journey at their proggiest before they were making commercial radio music.

They could’ve called this “the average to low debut. Because truthfully compared to their later output they do pale in comparison.
But, none of these are “terrible!” That’s a bit dramatic. Especially YES. That’s a great album.

The first Blur album is not very good, but not terrible. They hadn't found themselves as a band yet. As a fan of Beatles, Kinks, and Bowie, you really should give Blur a try. Start with Parklife then The Great Escape, Modern Life Is Rubbish, and the self-titled Blur album. There is a lot of the classic British song craft and clever arrangements of the other artists I mentioned. Blur were carrying on the tradition and updating it for a new generation. Also check out Supergrass. You'll be glad you did.

  • @musicisajourney
    @musicisajourney Před 4 měsíci +2

Yes’s debut does exactly what the band concept was about. I really like that album!
Thin Lizzy’s debut is not like the band that became big later on. It’s a product of it’s time. I wouldn’t say bad, though. Some tracks are alright.
Pantera! I just picked it up used in January. It’s a debut by a young metal band in 1983 who don’t know how to place keyboards well in their music. It’s okay. I bought it because I could.
Love that Tori Amos cover! I’ve never seen that one! Ooh, pop rock queen? Nope.

I have George Harrison's Wonderwall Music and enjoy it quite a bit. Several interesting tidbits: 1) It's the first solo album by a Beatle, 2) One of the tracks is simply the Beatles B-side "The Inner Light" minus the vocals. 3) There is some question over how much George Harrison actually plays on it--the musicians were mostly from India. I also have the Wonderwall movie, but I haven't watched it yet--I hear it's good.
Will definitely check out that Yes debut album.

Blur's Leisure a terrible album? NO WAY! It's not their best album, but it's still a good album. All the songs I've heard on that Adam and the Antz album are really likeable. I'm not a huge Journey fan, but their debut album is respectable; it's kinda like pop jazz, if that makes sense. Some not so great debut albums (maybe you mentioned these on another video): Pink Floyd, Rush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Iron Maiden.

Leisure by Blur isn’t that bad. It’s not what they became and cribs influence from the baggy scene at the time but like a lot of these albums it’s a start. She’s So High is a great song as are many other songs on this list. Apart from anything by Kid Rock

I usually avoid calling albums terrible. Couldn't they have called the albums mediocre instead? I haven't heard the Zevon, Cougar, or Elton John debuts, but all have a reputation for being not very good. I have heard the Billy Joel debut, and it was bad mainly because of the remastering error. It contains some good songs; in fact, one of them, "She's Got A Way", was later a hit in a different version.

  • @willd8574
    @willd8574 Před 5 měsíci +3

I didn’t think the Sonic Youth EP was considered bad at all, maybe Rolling Stone aren’t familiar with that kind of experimental music? The Blur inclusion also shocked me, that’s a very good album and “She’s So High” is a classic song. I also think Billy Joel’s debut is pretty good once you get used to the speed. I’m surprised they didn’t put Radiohead’s Pablo Honey on there, even though I don’t think it’s a bad album.

  • @richardfurness7556

Blur's debut album must have come as a big disappointment to anyone who'd discovered the band through Parklife and Modern Life Is Rubbish. It has one stand-out track (There's No Other Way) but the rest is fairly forgettable.
I'd have included Surfin Safari by the Beach Boys. Generic early 60s pop, tons of filler, not a hint of the greatness that was soon to come.

A friend of mine played on the John Mellencamp album, so I have heard it. It's pretty bad. It's mostly poorly recorded cover songs. There are a few originals on there too and they pretty much just sound like a young guy who didn't really know what he was doing yet. MCA was trying to make him out to be some kind of teeny-bopper "teen idol" and it just didn't work.

Of the albums I’ve actually heard:
David Bowie I agree with for the most part. It’s not something I necessarily enjoy listening to.
Wonderwall Music is okay as a soundtrack. Again, not one I’ve played more than once or twice.
Empty Sky by Elton John is a great album. It’s a solid debut and I really enjoy it. One of my favorite early-Elton compositions “Skyline Pigeon” is on it. “It’s Me That You Need” should have been on the album though, that’s one of Elton’s best early songs as well but was released as a single instead of on the album.
Cold Spring Harbor to me is amazingly underrated. “She’s Got a Way,” “Falling of the Rain,” “Everybody Loves You Now,” “Tomorrow is Today,” and more. A beautiful album with some of the most beautiful melodies that Joel ever wrote. I actually enjoy both the corrected and sped-up versions of the album.

The only albums on the list I’ve heard is the Yes, Genesis and Tori Amos albums. I like them all. They are different from the albums that came after but that don’t make them terrible, they are all very enjoyable. Tori is ashamed of her debut album, though, but the songs are good, it has the typical techno sound of the eighties though and that is very far from Toris sound on her official albums.
The Genesis debut album really has the sound of the pop music from the sixties and they were in no control of the production, just like Tori on her album. But the songs are really good in my opinion. Peter Gabriel is shining, but all the other members are very much pulled back.

Thanks. I really like early elton
      John's early albums. You can
      Listen and enjoy your song.
      Sound track of friends.
      Fantastic song writing from
      Bernie and Elton's 75 now
      What a great talent.
      And Bernie lyrics. Never
      Really dates but latter on
In the 80S his stuff got
A bit lost I'm still standing.
Is OK but really he mean
He still there. But blue eyes.
And song for guy are really
      Nice songs. But apart from
That no albums l really not
      Interested in 80S of Elton's
      Stuff. But concerts then
      On wards worth seeing.
He can live a retired happy
Man . Think what he accomplished
All those years. And to the music industry. Better back then. And
Life. Until that nasty bug come
On the seen . And ruined
      Every body's happiness
      I DIGRESS. Love your
      Music elton john and Bernie
      Musically influence me.
      Always great musos in there
Own right. Like Mr Ray Cooper
      Brilliant percussionist Cooper
      And elton together in Russia
      I think. Two good musos
      Together. Like he bet john
      Lennon if whatever gets you
In the night which I like
A lot. 74 walls and bridges
      Album reg sorry elton. Sing
      Back or together on that
Song if that song hits number
      One elton concert Lennon
      Turned up singing on it
It be came a live album.
      Forget name. But
      That's enough bull shit
      Off me tonight. Thanks
      Cheers

Terrible is a harsh term. I haven't heard most and don't like the ones I have but terrible isn't the word I'd use.

They say you have a lifetime to make your first Album and only moths to make your second
But it is rear to be fully formed out the gate
These are not bad albums just comparing to great work that followed.
Dirk wears White Socks is a great Album as is Yes Album
    Blur is good Album foo
Neil Young : Neil Young was underwhelming solo debut considering his work to that point

Rolling stone is just looking for discourse with this one. But hey, at least most of them are actual rock albums and not crap rap albums and at least King Gizzard’s 12 Bar Bruise isn’t on it.
