As you say, Larry, a pretty fair list. The Steely Dan album is my favourite on the list. Being objective, the King Crimson album is perhaps the most important one as it paved the way for prog rock. The same could be said of the Black Sabbath album and heavy metal.

I kind of understand why John Lennon and George Harrison's albums on this list are not their actual debut albums, but in my opinion, that's a cheat - it's like, "Well, they're Beatles, so we won't count the non-rock albums in their discography; their debut isn't until they did a pop record." I doubt very much if a lesser-known artist would get that "courtesy" and I also doubt that Harrison and Lennon would appreciate their first two solo records were discounted. I could be wrong about Lennon (but I don't think so) and I'd bet the dog and lot that George Harrison would appreciate it.

The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus & Television - Marquee Moon are two of my top 20 favourite albums of all time and they should've been included here. Other favourite debuts that didn't make this list:

I don't think the list contained anything more recent than the '80s, so it left out the major debut albums from Pearl Jam, Oasis, and Rage Against the Machine. Also missing were the debuts from The Who, Boston, The Smiths, and The Stone Roses. Three other debuts that I love are those from Graham Parker, Marshall Crenshaw, and Aztec Camera, but I understand that those albums aren't very well-known, so I didn't expect to see them on the list.

I admire your honesty. For this list, I mostly agree with these choices but I would have deleted enough of these to include STP's "Core", Sponge's "Rotting Pinata", Jennifer Trynin's "Cockamamie", Pet Shop Boy's "Please", Dig's "Wasteland", Aerosmith's first, Firebird's first, Blue Oyster Cult's first, Angel's first, U-2's first (Boy), Esthero's "Breath From Another" and I must be the only person on the planet who still loves to hear Deep Purple's first, "Shades Of". My criteria is simply what I still like to hear in it's entirety. I have perhaps 35 of the 40 albums on the list, and for my tastes, many have not aged well. It seems to me that many on these lists are noted because of name recognition; I'm sure 10,000 people would give 10,000 different lists.

Boston, ELP, Dire Straights, Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell, and Tragically Hip's Up To Here to name a few. It would be impossible not to include these. And U2, Foreigner, Alan Parsons Project, Tracy Chapman and The Police probably make the list too.

Rush 'Rush' should be ranked higher. Motley Crue is okay right were it is, I like that debut. Ozzy and Metallica are also good right where they're at. Now, that Guns N' Roses is ranked a bit too high, it deserves to be on the list but not that high. I can't argue with what's at number 1. I don't know enough about the second spot to agree or disagree, so I'll have to listen to it. This was a great list, for once.

I have 7 of the albums on the list. I just went through my record collection and found about 30 debut albums (I didn't count the ones that were on the list) that I love. Too many to list. A lot are from the punk/new wave era of the late 70s & early 80s. There were a few more that were decent but not outstanding. Both the Stones & the Who's first albums are their most underrated.

  • @Hexon66
    @Hexon66 Před 5 měsíci +1

It's kind of a cheat, but worthy of mention because it was a game changer. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is technically his second studio album, but the first almost entirely of his own songs. Warren Zevon, as a singer-songwriter, once noted 'he invented my job' . A 21 year old folk singer couldn't make a debut album with his own material in 1962, but had to do arrangements of traditional tunes. So, giving special dispensation to the benefit that Dylan largely provided to later artists, I'd suggest a singer-songwriting debut (beside Talking NY and Song for Woody) album, with the likes of "Blowin' in the Wind", "Girl from the North Country", "Masters of War", "A Hard Rain's A-gonna Fall", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "Oxford Town" deserves mention here.

Good video. Some of my favourite debuts not listed are Dead Kennedy’s Fresh Fruit… , Joy Division Unknown Pleasures, AC/DC’s High Voltage and Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse.
Half that list was ok. Mr. Tambourine Man is one of my least favourite albums. I don’t mind some Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love is a solid album. The 12 best from that list for me, in a basic order, are:
    Black Sabbath
    Velvet Underground and Nico
    Iron Maiden
    Appetite for Destruction
    Blizzard of Ozz
    The Doors
    Are You Experienced?
    Holy Diver
    The Clash
    Kill ‘Em All
    Never Mind the Bollocks…
Please Please Me - pound for pound, it probably should be number 1.
