Wendy, I was little bit confused abt The Topic of sentence & Thesis statement ,
1. topic of sentence = Topic (subject, who/what )+ controlling idea (describe the subject) where as
2.Thesis statement = Sepcifc Topic + idea/opinion + supporting details / evidence , however can a topic of sentence can have a supporting /reasons /evidence ? in that case how can we identify them ?

But, I am not certain as to the context you are using "main claim". Is this a term your teacher uses or did you read it somewhere? great information. Just for clarification. Is the first sentence of a narrative or essay supposed to start with a thesis statement?

Is there any opinion when writing a cause and effect thesis ?
I am not sure that I understand your question correctly. Would you try to ask it another way?
If you are asking if you have an "opinion" about what you are writing - I would say "yes". Any time you write you typically have an "opinion" about what you write but it may not be an official Opinion Paper. For example, if you thought smoking was bad for your health - you may choose to write a Cause/Effect paper that focuses on the negative aspects of smoking.

So that is where the phrase ‘it’s debatable’ comes from. I always hear people categorizing other’s statements as ‘debatable’ but I didn’t know what it meant. What i learned from you, the dichotomy between debatable and not debatable can be represented by the following statements:
“The telluride ski resort is fun”
This statement is not debatable because it’s your opinion.
“The telluride ski resort is a unique experience”
This statement is debatable because we can argue whether a unique experience is or isn’t unique.

This is only acceptable in high school. There should not be a "because" in any thesis statement. You should not give your reasons in the thesis. The reasons form the body and should not appear in the thesis. In college, a thesis like the one in this video is just wrong.

You could write a simple thesis telling the reader that there are some similarities and/or some differences between these two countries. Hope this helps!
