    Lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan...that was my 1st real Cup...was alive for all of the 70s but too young to truly appreciate...my 3 all-time favorite Habs played on it....Mats Naslund...Guy Carbonneau and the great Stephane Richer.

    I was at game 6 in Hartford. Broke my heart. ZZ Top was scheduled to play in Hartford that night but got pushed to the next night. I was able to meet Billy Gibbons in the skybox that night at least. Miss the Whalers!!!

    Everyone can point out Steve Smith's infamous own goal debacle in game 7, but Calgary lead that series 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and ultimately won 4-3. They also won three games in Edmonton. They shutdown and outplayed the Oilers. That series was some of the best in NHL history.

      I was at a bar in Montreal that night and on one of the TV's I happened to catch the Steve Smith own goal. As soon as I saw it I knew the Habs were winning the Cup.

    Just loved the Adam division era...big heavy defensively sound teams...typical score 3 -2 a few scraps...that s hockey as i know it...whoever was winning between Hartford and the Canadiens was going to the finals...my first hockey idol as a kid in Montreal...The little viking...Mini Mats Naslund....ahh glorious times and memories! Within a couple years it was all about Stephane Richer his 2 50 goals seasons with that pellet of a shot coming across the blue line...that was insane!

    When the Habs won that Cup, Mario Tremblay was in the Radio-Canada broadcast booth. In fact, he was in the booth for that entire Cup run. His career was over. He did play 56 games during that season but didn't dress for any playoff games.
    (And by the way, Shannon, the back-up goalie's name was DOUG Soetaert, not Steve Soetaert) Steve Penney (who you were likely thinking of) had been with the team that season also but only played 18 games, didn't dress during the playoffs and was in Winnipeg the next year.

    After that tough (and emotional) series w/Edmonton, the Flames had another gritty (7 game) series w/St. Louis just to get to the finals. I remember thinking at the time that Calgary just seemed to run out of steam by the time they got to the Canadiens.

    patrick roy was the best at putting the team on his back and winning big-pressure games.
    brodeur was more consistent and got more wins, but i know who i'd want in net for the playoffs if my team wasn't all it should be.
    roy still has the record for most wins in the playoffs and that's fitting. he took a lot of teams deeper than they should have gone. he's also got more conn smythe trophies than wayne gretzky. no other player in history of the game has accumulated 3 conn smythe's.

  • @answeris4217
    @answeris4217 Před 6 lety +1

    The Tremblay thing is because he had the french Don Cherry role... His job was to pick out the good and the bad from the Canadien and the games and to my knowledge did pretty good. Enough to have somebody think it would be a good idea to put him behind the bench.....
    He attacked Roy a week before he actually got the job and the fact that they where team mates before probably didn't help the ego battle. Tremblay being hired by the Canadien for the Head Coaching job cost them at minimum a cup because Roy and Tremblay didn't jell OBVIOUSLY Right...
    The second HUGE mistake is having the GM and OWNER of the Canadien right behind the bench with no glass there. So yeah picture a frustrated star that pulled HIMSELF out of a game... Tremblay told him to go back out there after getting 7 goals scored on him. Roy just walked pass Tremblay and asked for a trade and then sat back down.... I am sure that if one Tremblay wouldn't have won a cup with Roy and second if the owners where in a booth that this could have been settled after a cool down.

    Hasek not better than mr Roy?
    Perhaps you could make the Hockey Guy defensive forward special award.. ? With some info about players like Carbonneau and Steve Konowalchuk.. etc all those guys that are outshined by the numbers of others.. but without them.. teams are less.
    Cheers from the Netherlands.

    Shannon back in those days if you would have told people that the Blackhawks would have gotten a mini Dynasty people would have probably laughed at you and pretty hard too.
    So Montreal not winning the cup might just be the fact that there's 31 teams and the talent pool isn't what it used to be. That and Montreal had the pick of the litter for a long time.

    I think true Montreal fans can make the distinction between Mario Tremblay the player and Mario Tremblay the coach. He hasn't been booed off RDS (french TSN) yet so I think people have made peace with the whole Roy incident. If Tremblay, and Houle for that matter, would have still been part of the team in '89, I think Montreal could have won it then as well.

    • @patrickquintin4664
      @patrickquintin4664 Před rokem

      Tremblay's biggest problem as a coach was that he couldn't get his players to care about winning and losing as much as he did when he was a player. We must remember that when Tremblay cracked the Habs lineup as an 18 or 19 year old, he was joining a dynastic roster. The fact that he somehow was able to play a regular shift with a team as chock-full of superstars as they had speaks to his dedication. He didn't have the skill set to get by on his looks. He needed to outwork people. And he played every game as though his hair was on fire. His biggest mistake was assuming that the players he was coaching cared as much as he did.
