- The ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam is a prototype transformable amphibious mobile suit developed as part of ZAFT's Second Stage Series. It is designed to use its MS mode for combat in space and on the ground, and can transform into a specialized MA mode for underwater combat. The MA mode adopts a streamline-shape that helps to reduce water resistance, making the suit faster and more mobile in the water, and also grants it higher underwater combat performance than the other ZAFT amphibious mobile suits. Like the other units in the Second Stage Series, the Abyss Gundam has a new form of Phase Shift armor known as Variable Phase Shift armor and is powered by a battery that can be recharged during battle using the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System.
The Abyss is heavily armed and features a large number of beam and shell based weaponry, but most of them are usable only in MS mode. The MA mode relies mainly on the high-speed guided torpedos and dual cannons for underwater attacks, and the dual beam cannon for destroying targets on and above the water surface. The suit's beam weaponry are never used underwater as their power are reduced by the water. The Abyss Gundam can also use a handheld beam lance for close combat (even in the water as the lance has a physical blade), and for defense, it can use the pair of shoulder-mounted binders as shields as they are anti-beam coated. The suit mainly functions as a long range support unit due to its large array of ranged weaponry.

Yep,while I don't believe it is the only one,it is by far the best aquatic MS at that point,plus being the only aquatic MS that didn't suck in space

ガンダムとしては珍しい水中戦特化型の機体。
MA形態は水中専用の為、地球に降りるまでは封印されていた。
水中特化型といいながらも高火力のビーム兵器も装備していたから地形に問わず戦闘も可能な万能機でした。
セカンドステージのガンダムの中では最も早く退場した為、その後のガンプラは旧HGのまま。スパロボの参戦もパイロットのアウル共々Zのみであまり恵まれていない。

アビスは毎回バカスカビーム打ちまくってるのに戦闘中１回も途中で充電切れ起こしてる描写が無かったから相当エネルギー効率と燃費が良いんだな。
というか、アビスに限らずセカンドステージのMSはエネルギー問題を殆ど解決してると言っても過言ではないから…
それこそ無理な長期戦やら初期三馬鹿みたいなありえねぇ使い方しない限りエネルギー切れ起こすことはまず無いっていう

Funny that the Abyss is an aquatic mobile suit, yet doesn't end up in the water till quite a bit into the series.
The thing about SEED gundams is, they all embody, reflect, symbolise or represent something.
Duel series-The term ,,duel" means a fair single combat. It can be said it represents OMNIs wish to fight against ZAFT evenly.
Buster series-They are pack a heavy punch. To bust can also be interpreted as to beat or to pummel. It represents OMNIs will to blast ZAFT into pieces.
Blitz series and Destroys names reflect their functions as a stealth attack unit and mass-destruction unit.
Aegis- The term ,,aegis" has simular meaning to protection or shield. Back when it was made, OMNIs excuse for attacking the PLANTs was to protect the Earth.
Strike series-They embody OMNIs desire to strike back against ZAFT after constant defeats and humiliations.
Freedom series-Original Freedom was named for the sake of propaganda to embody the will of Coordinators to free themselves of the Naturals yoke and persecutions. But after Kira got into it, it became a symbol of 1 freeing themselves from hatred, cycle of violence, and the control of the unjust. Freedom to choose their own path as well.
Justice series-Original Justice was named for the sake of propaganda to embody the will of the ZAFT to make OMNI answer for their crimes against coordinators. But after Athrun joined Kira in it, it became a symbol of what is right and 1 following what their own gut and mind is telling them is correct instead of blindly doing what others tell them to.
Raider- The term ,,raider" is synonimous with ,,attacker". It respresents BCs constant attacks on coordinators.
Calamity-It is the symbol of the chain of disasters that was started when Junius 7 got nuked and the distructive consequences of BCs actions.
Forbidden-Reflects nature of it's pilot, an extended, who was subjected to horrible, inhumane and by all means illegal experiments, and it's operators, who commited every crime imaginable out of shear hate and jealousy for coordinators.
Providence- The term providence means ,,divine will" or ,,the way things are supposed to be". It reflects Rau ,,figuring humanity out" and deciding to wipe it all out for their violent nature, deciding their fate.
-Chaos, Gaia, Abyss-The 3 represent the Earth being casted into the abyss of chaos by Djibril and the like.
Impulse-The term ,,impulse" refers to a momentary feeling, 1. thing that comes to mind and desire to act immediately. It can be read as acting on ones feelings instead of clear logical thoughts, which is mostly what it's 1. pilot, Shinn, did.
Savior- it can be said it is a reflection of Durandalls scheme to ,,save" mankind from itself.
Legend-The term ,,legend" means a tale from the past that can not be forgotten. It represents the past, with all it's pros and cons, something that cannot and will not be forgotten. (And I sure won't forget it. RIP Rey)
Destiny-It was originaly supposed to be embodiment of the DP and of how most of people view the very term ,,destiny". A fate that 1 cannot surprass. A road that 1 must follow. Something someone was supposed to be since the get go. But now, after it's come-back, it embodies what the term ,,destiny" really means. Something you eventually become. A path that is defined by your own choices. Something you are turned into by everyone you encounter and everything that happens in your life. Your own potential to become something great if you just keep trying to be it.
Akatsuki-It reflects and embodies Orbs ideals. Its reflective golden mirror-surface shows Orbs capabilities and specialness, but also it's ideals. Orb will not attack another nation 1., it won't meddle in the wars of other nations, but if someone attacks it, they will regret it. Like how any ranged beam attacks that hit Akatsuki are returned to the sender.
Almost forgot
Astray series Gundams-Most of the Astray Gundams that were meant for ORB were lost, meaning ,,they went astray", and are now in hands of the other factions who are using them on their missions and have no permanent fixed bases, as in ,,they are now wandering"
Hyperion series-Hyperion Gundam was given the best gear EF could offer, thus it was the symbol of their ability.
Drednaught-,,Drendaught" is a classification for a big, strong heavily durable ship. Dradnaught Gundam was the 1. of ZAFTs gundams and despite being test-bed and a prototype, in contrast to Duel, it was well armed. It can be said it shows strenght, fearlessnes and endurance people of the PLANTs posses, having been weathering many tragedies and hardships.

Raigo-I think it best represents advancement of the Earth based nations and factions in the field of the military tech, since it and its packs are upgraded versions of Strike and its packs. Strike was the 1. EA MS, the 1. too be used by them in battle I mean, and successfully at that.
Testament-Explained in the fan wiki. In short, symbol of ZAFTs twisted phylosophy under Patricks control
Regenarate-Its name obviously refers to its ability to repair itself so long as it has usable spare parts.
They are named by concepts for a reson.

水中での戦闘を主眼に開発した機体にも関わらず宇宙でも運用出来るというなかなかこういう部類では珍しい機体だと思います😅…流石にSEEDを発現したシンのブラストインパルスには敵わなかったみたいですな～😅
アビスの攻撃を直前にブラストシルエットをパージして爆発に気をとらわれた隙にビームジャベリンにコックピットごと刺された。このシーンを見ると前作のイザークが(宇宙やけど)フォビドゥンを突進する際にフォビドゥンはフレスベルグを発射し、デュエルを撃沈したと思われたが、(デュエルはキラを撃つ怨念によってアサルトシュラウドを強化された状態)デュエルの増加装甲をパージし、爆発の隙を突き接近戦を持ち込みフォビドゥンの反撃対応不可な状態でコックピットごと突き刺す。(フレスベルグもビームサーベルで使用不能)フリーダム➕ジャスティスですら敵わなかったのに性能の差をパイロットの技量差で勝利している。シンもそのうちの一人SEED込みでも。
Not my favorites out of the trio, but I do have to give it respect for what it is it’s good underwater and equally good on land, which is kind of rare and some other Gundam underwater MS they mostly put all points in one pacific category so cool
And the model kit is actually decent It’s actually a very nice one worthy of getting it.

Seed Destiny was a very bad anime, but it had the coolest Gundams of the Seed saga

ザフトが開発した新世代ガンダムの一機
その名前の通り、水中戦を重視して開発された機体
非常に高い火力を有しており、状況によっては単騎で複数の相手を抑える事も可能
なおゆくゆくは、水中戦用ＭＳ部隊のフラグシップ機として運用される予定であったが、地球連合軍第８１独立機動群ファントムペインにより強奪される
三機の中でもアビスが一番好き。最後まで生存してほしかったわアウルというキャラもあって。
メイリンとの恋仲も想像。偶然出会って再会してと。シンとも仲良くなれそう。ステラが生存してたら何かとシンとステラに入ってくると。

It's unfortunate we didn't see more of Abyss in an atmospheric battle outside of the Theft at Armory One incident, 'cause it can definitely provide some firepower alongside the Chaos.

そんな機体も、覚醒した主人公には敵わず、最後はまさかの槍投げでコクピットを貫かれ、パイロット共々海の藻屑になるとは・・・😮
