Okay but seriously, who's gonna tell DreamWorks that they straight up stole a movie on accident? Maybe we should talk to Caleb first... maybe one day.

"Ruby Gillman" also borrows elements of "The Little Mermaid" (especially since Chelsea looks like the traditional Ariel & this movie was released the same year as the live-action remake), and someone pointed out that it also borrow elements of "Carmilla."
*Replace vampires with krakens & merfolk.
*The main villain tricks main character into becoming friends with them so they can get something that'll make them stronger.
*Villain goes under a false identity, and their true selves turn out to be a much older & bigger threat.
    Of course the major differences between "Ruby" & "Carmilla" is tone of the relationships. In "Carmilla" there are heavy lesbian undertones because Marcilla/Carmilla is a vampire that only targets women as her victims;
While in "Ruby," Chelsea/Narissa was just gaslighting the next ruler of the Kraken kingdom to hand over Posidon's triton to her.

Monster Inc. vs Orion and The Dark
    Finding Nemo vs Shark Tales
    The Incredibles vs Megamind

You've gotta think about the difference between equivalent and similar (oh god 4th grade math memories).
The Incredibles and Megamind are yes, similar, because they're both superhero movies, yet the characters are different, the plots are different, they're actively produced at different times, characters follow different arcs, etc. Yes there are similarities, but just because they have some similar concepts it doesn't mean that they're equivalent.
I understand what your saying, but what I talk about in this video is how Teenage Kraken and Turning Red ARE very similar in that their themes, plot, characters, and many different details are all the same.
And also, if Wall-E was truly similar to The Wild Robot, people would've been blaming Wall-E for being similar to the book. So we'll see I guess.

    ☝🤓
They did NOT start production at the same time,
turning red being developed/announced in as FAR BACK AS 2018 (the idea first being pitched in 2017, though) And coming out in 2022:
Luca Being announced/first in production in 2020 and coming out in 2021:
And ruby gillman: teenage kraken being released publicly in june of 2023, with only the cast being announced in 2023. Only other info I could find was that the IDEA of a kraken family was pitched in 2016, later transfering to dreamworks, and it was announced with a new title on march 16th 2023.
    SO..
Its possible that 'ruby gillman teenage kraken' was in production before turning red and luca, but with Both of the movies being announced before them and soon after being RELEASED before them; its possible they tweaked the actual movie quite a lot, taking and taking elements from each of the other 2 movies, since they were doing SO WELL.

      Does planning start?
Plus if it starts too early, then by the time the movie comes out, then is it even similar to what was planned in the first place?
It's a really tough discussion. I just used the estimate that the movies took about 4 years to make start to finish.

The sad thing is that Ruby Gillman had so much potential (there was scrapped plot lines on TV Tropes that I feel would’ve massively improved the film) and after the huge success of Dreamworks’ two movies before it (Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2) everyone, myself included believed Dreamworks was going to overtake Disney (and Pixar) as being in better shape as they had two flops the previous year. We all thought Ruby would be the hit and Elemental would be flop, only to find out the exact opposite happened.
What didn’t help either is according to TV Tropes is that the pitch for Ruby began in around 2015 but production didn’t begin until around 2020 only for COVID to disrupt production again. The film also was supposed to have Paul Tibbitt (known for being involved in SpongeBob) attached. Around August 2021 he was replaced by Kirk DeMicco, shortly after the release of DeMicco's previous film Vivo, when DreamWorks Animation wanted the project to take a different direction with 18 months left for completion with it finally being approximately finished in March 2023.
PS Wow, congrats at how many views this video has. I think this is your most viewed video yet? It appears to be miles ahead of your other videos (which definitely deserve more views as is, I find your videos quite funny, entertaining, and overall well made).

I do fully believe that each movie has potential. Like some movies have such dumb concepts yet still end up working somehow. One good example is the recent Wonka movie. I absolutely LOVE that movie. But on paper it's the stupidest thing ever. A Willy Wonka franchise addon except now we add in a cartel. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of... IM IN.
Also, I find the bit that the movie was directed by Kirk DeMicco super funny.
For Turning Red, Domee Shi had a deep personal connection to the character she was helping portray. It really just felt fitting to have a female director for a movie like Turning Red.
On the other hand, DreamWork's similar project was made by some dude named Kirk. I just thought it was super funny where compared. I'm not saying one director is better than the other, it's just that Domee really seemed to fit her project more lol.

To be honest, even though I actually enjoyed "Trolls Band Together" very much, I feel like the middle section of the movie copied "Vivo," Sony Pictures Animation's first ever animated musical. Let me tell you why.
Not only did Dreamworks name Camila Cabello's character, Viva (which is also Spanish for life), but she also went through a similar character arc the same way the titular kinkajou from "Vivo" did. After reuniting with her sister, Poppy after years of being separated, Poppy says she has to leave with Branch and his brothers to go to Mount Rageous, save Floyd, and she offers Viva to come with her. But Viva does not take this well because she's afraid of leaving her home at the abandoned Bergen golf course, and she doesn't want Poppy to leave her again, so she tries to pursuade her into staying with her forever, but this attempt doesn't really go well until Poppy leaves her memory book on purpose so Viva could see it. Then Viva realizes the error of her ways once she meets Bridget and Gristle, and she comes with them to help Poppy, Branch, and the others take down Velvet and Veneer.
This feels so similar to "Vivo" because in the beginning of the movie, Andrés is so excited to go to Miami to see Marta Sandoval (his long-lost love) again so he could show her the song that he's written for her, but Vivo does not take this well because he's afraid of leaving his home in Havana, and that's because he spent most of his life there playing music with Andrés, but right after he comes to his senses and realizes that Andrés does need that trip, tragedy comes, so Vivo decides to go to Miami to bring Andrés' song to Marta himself (then he meets Gabi along the way).
I feel like Dreamworks also copied Sony because they did a similar character arc for Viva, but at least they did it differently.
Am I the only one who noticed this?

    • @thejackcarlin
      @thejackcarlin  Před 25 dny

I haven’t seen this trolls movie for a few years now but the main thing is really this: if you like it, then it doesn’t matter that any of it copied anything. I just made this video to point out a similar overall plot along with themes.
Take MacBeth for example. MANY pieces of media have copied arcs very directly except in this case it works as a reference. The characters copying Macbeth are experiencing the same things as Macbeth himself.
It’s okay to copy media if it actually adds to a characters arc or at least changes the plot.
Nice observation too that looks solid.

You all don't know this but Dreamworks and Pixar had this whole copy war since their beginnings. Some of the people who worked on Pixar/Disney originally went to work with Dreamworks animators come and go to studio all the time now ideas this isn't anything new. Heres the movie copy line up.
Antz=Bug Life, pathetic ant main character who loves princess ant, and deals with bullies above them.
Shrek=Monster. Inc, monster renowed for their roars, then monster loves a female character, with a wise cracking sidekick.
Shark Tale=Finding Nemo, a fish whose reminded of their lowlife, and vegetarian sharks.
Flushed Away=Ratatolie, rats downed in a sewer wanting a higher life for themselves, while a fat rat takes advantage of them.
Turbo=Cars, racers wanting to win a champion cup but stuck in their miserable small town lives.
    my personal favorite
How to train your dragon=Brave, both northern european teenagers who disagree with their culture norms, conflicts with their dominate parent, and end up fighting a giant monster at the end Red Death/Mordew.
Besides theres times Pixar copies other movies the Good Dinosaur from Land Before time, young longneck dino losing their parents, seeing their ghosts, making friends with T-rexes etc.
Toy story 3 takes heavily from Brave Little Toaster, both beloved items from their grown up owners leaving them, ended up in facilities that constantly remind them less of what they are, and an antagonist(Air conditioner/Lotzo) that has a mental breakdown while taking it out on the heroes, both heroes end up in a junkyard and reunited with their owners.
Other animated movies that take from others
Thief and the Cobbler/Aladdin, Rescuers down under/Fievel goes west, and Titan A.E/Treasure Planet just to name a few.

What are your thoughts on current animation studio collapse

    • @thejackcarlin
      @thejackcarlin  Před 27 dny +3

      Well... I don't think they're really collapsing.
If a studio releases a movie, and it's bad, the immediate reaction is "Ope, this studio fell off!"
But the instant a good movie is made, viewers are often like "Ope, this studio is back baby! Can't go back now!"
This exact scenario was seen in 2011-2013. Pixar released Cars 2, Brave, and Monsters University all in a row. Although I think they're all pretty good movies, it didn't compare to their previous streak. That being said, the next year they made Inside Out which is often seen as one of the best Pixar movies.
Look at DreamWorks. Last year, they released Puss in Boots which essentially revived the studio. Before that, there hadn't been a revival since 2019's Httyd the hidden world. That being said, the stuff between wasn't bad either. There was The Bad Guys and.... well that's about it.
It's not a collapse of animation studios, it's the period of waiting for something great.
Also Pixar only makes one movie a year so they end up technically making less money than say Dreamworks which makes 2 per year which end up either being sequels or random unadvertised stuff.

Just because you use a similar ideas and characters from another movie doesn't mean you're copying them. Ruby Gillman and Turning Red may be similar, but they both have many ideas that have been used countless times, like an overprotective mom and someone who really wants to do something and has to figure out how to do it because they weren't allowed to by their parents. Both of these movies use common ideas that have been reused many times, so I don't think they're copying each other, or any other movie. They just happen to be very similar.

I have awesome friends who always support me. Yes, I did choose my family over them when mom found out I lied to her... But they still cared about me and even looked after my tamagotchi! Plus I stood up for them later because I love them! My friends are so loyal to me that they asked our beloved band to save my mom with their singing. Firstly, my story is about to help you to find the bright side in your weaknesses. Secondly, my story is about to show you how great friendship is. Thirdly, the thing my mom hated about me is the very same thing that saved her, can you smell this great level of irony?))

Normally Dreamworks is good at making fun of Disney/Pixar movies.
Except turning red was actually good. The only people who didn’t like it were people who are weird about periods…and anyone who has never been or never had a 13 year old girl. Those are the only 2 people.
Turning Red is at least interesting.
Teenage Kracken feels like a story written by a 13 year old.
Turning Red felt like it was written by an adult ABOUT 13 year olds.

I don't like turning red because I find it boring (my opinion)
