- Part of the Ulysses 31 Restoration Project; "The Black Sphere" (Episode 3 of 26). Although I have spent hours restoring this classic 80's cartoon please note that I own nothing and will be happy to remove content if asked.
I'll say this for the show, the ship and setting designs are really quite striking.
This is one of my favorite episodes, heck this show is one of my favorites since I was young, so glad I got the DVD boxset, but it is always wonderful to see it here too.
The ship designs were amazing, I still loved the fact they actually made Tridents into ships too, I was blown away by the ship work, do I need to say about the plot and amazing scenes the show set out? Dang they were fantastic.
If they ever were to do a reboot, that some keep saying, I would take interest, but I would hope they keep with the original stuff, but adding something different of course, otherwise we all may aswell watch this one, not that we would stop watching this one as it is a timeless classic, a memory in the hearts of many childhoods.
Both this and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, along with alot of other amazing shows back when were amazing classics and forever be remembered as golden era cartoons, in my opinion, I could nerd out for ages, but you all probably get bored and I be sounding like how C3-P0 would ramble on :D lol
hahaha I share your enthusiasm, everything about this is perfect, loved the spaceships too, the animation, the voices, and the soundtrack is great and the general sounds that they use, it's a very unique TV show, great for kids and adults with it's adult themes
@@dizmop Darn right on those facts, infact when I mentioned this show to one of my work mates ages ago the first thing he remembered was the music and how awesome it was, for me everything about this shows was a huge inspiration and just one of many of my great loves, plus I love the fact they used the Greek Myths in this too, something I am a fan of, along with other Mythologies too :D, but the show is a prime example that kids can be exposed to a cartoon that has characters both winning and losing without the worry of it affecting them in a bad way.
As for the voice acting I always loved it when you had the gods speaking, specially in their powerful voice and you knew which god was talking because Zeus sounded more older and deep, where the other was lighter, but more threatening sounding, it just sends chills down my spine, even to this day.
The Odyssey was one of my favorite designs along with the Tridents because it was so unique and I dare say I have never seen a show use those designs, infact now I think about it, not many shows feature the 31st century either, unless I am forgetting something :D
@@fireballstardraco again I have to agree with all that you say, for a time in the 80's I got into Anime which was not popular here in England, my doorway in was the robots, I collected kits from Hamleys and a huge model shop in Holborn, they were like sophisticated transformer models, similar to Airfix kits if you know what those are, having tracked the stories down through video and later the internet I saw some amazing cartoons, crazy spacecraft and uniforms but Ulysses 31 was still in a league of its own, taking the best from Japanese animation skills with French/European storytelling. I loved the Odyssey, its vast size, its armoury its defences, the huge fields with grazing cows, the play and activity areas and of course the numerous shuttles, and of course Sherka, what an absolutely great cartoon series, nothing comes close.

@@dizmop Your story reminds me of my story, I live in the UK myself, England and back in the 80s my dad got me into all sorts of things, Battle of the Planets was my first Anime, then Robotech/Macross and ect, ect, infact it was him that said to me to watch this show and he would often try and get the kits to make up the ships from the shows I watched, those were the days :D
But like you when I came across the internet it was a door way to all sorts of info about the things I loved as a kid and helped me to even get hold of some of the animes that were hard to get here, all I can say I am glad I picked up some of the DVDs when they were around at the time before they went up in price :D , this show I saw on Boxset and me and my sister both got hold of it, I just recently got myself Jayce and the Wheeled Worriers on DVD aswell, it is US but lucky I got a PC that runs everything, so I am happy :D

This is a cool show. Love the plot. Don't recall ever seeing in my lifetime. If they reboot it, they'd probably screw it up. Thanks for uploading it..
After watching 'Son of Zeus' and 'Castlevania' on Netflix that team would probably be the best if a remake were greenlit. I could imagine it maybe being a follow on like the new X-Men 97 on Disney +
it's amazing how it's not really dated in terms of the story flow and writing. Even the animation is better than some modern Anime. The tech design was done so well it stands up today. I'm pretty sure they tried to make him Jesus though.
The setting and way of speech makes it timeless.
Pretty sure 'they' demonised Greek gods, rather than Abrahamic ones.
@compliobot6519 From the early days of the mythology the Greek gods were basically arseholes, even the comparatively "enightened" ones like Athena or Apollo could be venal, petty and vindictive at times in the stories. It's a pretty on-brand representation
I loved this as a teenager one of the many coproductions with Japan and European broadcasters like RTL and FR3

@@LostockGamerPlays Europe definately got a couple of very cool anime series' that we didn't in North America out of these two. At least we got 'Albator' on the French CBC channel in Canada, or I might not have even known about Captain Harlock. Albator and especially Battle of the Planets (and eventually Star Blazers) were the gems of my childhood, that's for sure.

Love this episode so much, I saw it when I was very small and it’s one I remember well, it’s really timeless, I actually hope if they reboot Ulysses they work with the original material, not redo it and mess it up

Hmm, the version I have has the music a semi-tone lower than this. I completely forgot that there's slowdown with NTSC. This is the pitch the music should be at?
Btw, I compared this with the version I have and you've done a fab job! Would love to hear what went into the process.

Yeah, they will surely land on another, habitable planet, Ulysses. Space is full of earth-like objects. It will be very easy especially In that rusty, wrecked space coffin you left them to die in.
