  • The morning commute can be a drag, but for Joakim Malm, an ice guide based in Stockholm, getting around is always an adventure. Malm hits the ice on special long-distance skates. With its unique Nordic landscape of frozen lakes and rivers, long-distance ice skating has existed in Scandinavia for centuries. But with every skate comes the very real threat of falling through thin ice, for which Malm and his friends must always prepare.

Could someone please tell me what brand or style ice skates those are? They actually look just like XC ski bindings that we use here in the USA.

Yup, his kind of skates have the exact same binding as cross country skis. You can even use the same shoes but you generally want more support around the ankle than what regular xc shoes provide. I don't know exactly which ones he has but they look very similar to my Zandstra Blade. There are other nordic skates available with attached heel, but they're not nearly as convenient to put on and remove.

Am I the only one who noticed that the chair which was left on ice was from IKEA?

Ohh I am sorry !! I know about this, my father taught us to "travel skate" decades ago on the lake where I live,he would skate ahead tapping the ice with a sturdy pole to avoid thin ice. The skates are better now and it is still an adventure! It is a lot like cross country skiing. I live over two thousand meters in altitude!
