By the time he did Delirious at 22, he was the sharpest thing on the planet. Very minor stumble on the Star Trek joke, other than that, he was pure danger. Best delivery ever.
I can't believe he came in last. He was the 1st performer of the five. The order they performed was the reverse order they placed. I watched this on SHOWTIME when it came out. Granted I was 11 but still remember a lot of his routine (I think this only has 1/2 of it) but none from the other performers.
He's better here (at 19) than several comedians I've seen on much bigger stages with higher quality production... Eddie definitely deserved success.. About 3 years after this he was a bona-fide star
It's amazing that at age 19 Eddie Murphy looked like he was 28-30 Year's old and now at like 50-55 Year's old he still looks 28-30 Year's old!! #Hilarious
Even if there is stuff I see of Eddie that I have never in terms of his stand up, I still laugh at his jokes like its 1985 (For me) This dude is the greatest.
You would have been 3 or 4 years old in 1985. I'm pretty sure you didn't understand the majority of his jokes back then, but were merely laughing at how he sounded and the facial expressions he was making.
Your finally going to get your wish since Eddie Murphy is coming back via NETFLIX(for around $100 million dollars!!)on 5/15/2020!! I see 👀you've been waiting for this for the past 3 years!!
yea totally... it goes to show you copy until you make it yoru own.... i meet so many that think the key to being original is making sure you have no influences and dont steal anyone elses "shtick"
He wouldn't return to stand up, he said so. He hit big in '79, '80, but, today is different, and he doesn't need to re-prove himself, it might not work!
He had the gift of making the room feel uncomfortable and owning it, which only exceptional comics can do. When they say his early material has not aged well I completely disagree. This is comedy at the boundaries and he just it. Legend.
None better. I saw Delirious when I was 15. I had to sneak into the lounge room to watch it when everyone else had gone to bed, and it was so hard to stop from laughing like a crazy person after the first five minutes. I thought, by the time I'm halfway through, the whole block is going to know there's something weird going on in our house.
southlondon86 Ricky Gervais doesn't belong among the greatest of all time like Carlin, Pryor, and Murphy. Adding him is like a "which one of these is different from the others."
I watched it on TV with my Dad. We could not believe he came in last. Another black guy won I believe 500 bucks. The look on Eddie's face when he came in last. How ironic within a short period of time he was famous.
He and Keenan Ivory Wayans and a few later famous comics were all applying to be on SNL back then; it was said that when EM showed up to audition he told everyone else to go home, no use applying because HE was going to get that gig. EM was younger then most of them so they clowned his young ass right on the spot. He auditioned and got the gig and the rest is history.
Yes, he's heavily influenced by Richard Pryor! He's said on numerous occasions, when he was 15, 16...he would basically do Richard Pryor act! And a lot of toilet humor.lol But, safe to say by his 2nd major stand up special "Raw", he was all Ed. And inspired the next generation(Rock, Martin, Morgan, Fox, Chapelle, Tucker, etc)
Eddie was following Richard Pryor hard here. He even has his mannerisms in the way he does his voices. Even did a few of Richards jokes. It's true though, everybody borrows from the legends.
Did the guy at the start actually say "catapult him to fame, fortune & a LAST place finish at the New York Big Laff Off" ??? WTF? Last? Seriously? You'll never see someone this good at stand-up at 19 years old EVER again. Not seen before or since.
Like I did with his tape and the hamburger joke, I would went to school and sounded like him and had a crowd around and told some of these jokes! Peace!
never saw him again. he walked out looking like a goofy looking dork and that was a big part of his routine. he sucked. I was 11 when I saw this on Showtime so I don't remember much about it. I know one of the other performers did an impression of John Wayne and told the joke about a woman going into a boat with a bunch of guys to go fishing and came back with a big red snapper.
The contestants were in order: Eddie Murphy, Carol Leifer, Rick Overton, Mark Schiff and Steve Middleman. The judges awarded in reverse order. By the way, the show was hosted by Don Novello as Father Guido Sarducci.
Who was the black lady who won beat Eddie on this show? I've been trying to find her name to see how her career went but I never heard of or saw her again after this show in 1981. Does anyone now her name?
19 years old?! What a mature professional he was at such a young age.
Joe R very true. He started when he was about 15 so he already had some years under his belt.
By the time he did Delirious at 22, he was the sharpest thing on the planet. Very minor stumble on the Star Trek joke, other than that, he was pure danger. Best delivery ever.
Honestly he saved SNL during the 80s
I can't believe he came in last. He was the 1st performer of the five. The order they performed was the reverse order they placed. I watched this on SHOWTIME when it came out. Granted I was 11 but still remember a lot of his routine (I think this only has 1/2 of it) but none from the other performers.
to the times when masculinity was still alive...
now, being a woman is an option...ain't no room for maturity
"I want ya to scream it like I just moved on ya block" 😂😂
Is there a parrot in here?
such a genius...... wow man thats crazy.... got the upper hand and won them over INSTANTLY
He's better here (at 19) than several comedians I've seen on much bigger stages with higher quality production... Eddie definitely deserved success.. About 3 years after this he was a bona-fide star
Like Donald Glover? Or Tiffany Hadish?
It's amazing that at age 19 Eddie Murphy looked like he was 28-30 Year's old and now at like 50-55 Year's old he still looks 28-30 Year's old!! #Hilarious
Black don't crack
He was 19 but he controlled the crowd like a boss
Eddie was the first Rock Star Comedian,
& you can see why!!!
Just like Tarantino was the first Rock Star Film Director...
Even if there is stuff I see of Eddie that I have never in terms of his stand up, I still laugh at his jokes like its 1985 (For me) This dude is the greatest.
I'm the exact same age he was in this video and I'm crying with laughter.
Eddie a damn fool 😁
You would have been 3 or 4 years old in 1985. I'm pretty sure you didn't understand the majority of his jokes back then, but were merely laughing at how he sounded and the facial expressions he was making.
Eddie Needs To Return
Ultra Talented no he does not
rman fuck you Eddie Murphy's the man
Ultra Talented he should
Ultra Talented , the world needs him now.
Your finally going to get your wish since Eddie Murphy is coming back via NETFLIX(for around $100 million dollars!!)on 5/15/2020!! I see 👀you've been waiting for this for the past 3 years!!
freaking genius at 19
You can really see the Richard Pryor influence in his early stuff. Especially this clip.
yea totally... it goes to show you copy until you make it yoru own.... i meet so many that think the key to being original is making sure you have no influences and dont steal anyone elses "shtick"
I wonder what material he would use today if he returned to standup? Just impressions alone would catapult him back to #1. I hope he does it.
He wouldn't return to stand up, he said so. He hit big in '79, '80, but, today is different, and he doesn't need to re-prove himself, it might not work!
possibly but I think he can
IF he wanted to!
I just saw Mr Church. He is up to other bigger things.
What was it like? Have you seen his Mark Twain Award speech? Closest thing to standup in 28 years. He's still got it!
You can see Richard Pryor in his act
He had the gift of making the room feel uncomfortable and owning it, which only exceptional comics can do. When they say his early material has not aged well I completely disagree. This is comedy at the boundaries and he just it. Legend.
It's society that hasn't aged well. Eddie's material is and always will be boss!
What a pair of balls on him at 19.
The king of comedy!
They say laughter is the best medicine this man is the cure
my favorite stand-up comedian ever!
He was insanely great in the late 70s to the mid 80s. So much stand up ages poorly, but his first Tonight Show is STILL hilarious.
Damn I miss Eddie Murphy. My favorite comedian and could arguably be my favorite actor.
EDDIE MURPHY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!
Ja Z like dang and all this time, i thought you had to be a certain age lol
Louis Alexander you have to be 45 years old or older to become president
greenbeancom38 it's not 45
Louis Alexander JFK is the youngest president he was 46
greenbeancom38 lol you have to be at least 35
None better. I saw Delirious when I was 15. Comedians in cars getting coffee brought me here
Sames. He's hardly aged
he must have been born funny, he already had the stage presence at 19. him, chris rock, and George carlin, the funniest guys to ever walk the earth.
Man.... Richard Pryor
Bryan Mannoia Dave Chappelle...
Ricky Gervais
southlondon86 Ricky Gervais doesn't belong among the greatest of all time like Carlin, Pryor, and Murphy. Adding him is like a "which one of these is different from the others."
Bryan Mannoia Richard Pryor, Red Foxx.... A LOT funnier than C.Rock...
he's an old looking 19 year old
i thought the same thing but he was only 22 when he did delirious.
I think it's the mustache.
Yeah, it is hard to believe, but it's true. 1961
whats wrong? the mustache too big?
Sonoftoenails93 pretty big for 19...
Stage presence and command of the crowd is amazing! Esp at 19!!
I watched it on TV with my Dad. We could not believe he came in last. Another black guy won I believe 500 bucks. The look on Eddie's face when he came in last. How ironic within a short period of time he was famous.
I saw this when it !st aired. i was a teen and i told these jokes at school next day!!!!!
I dunno if he is the greatest of all times, but he sure is number one in my list.
mine list too. he's N1
He’s BEEN my GOAT.
Saturday night live
Ohhh god i miss his stand ups!!!
More talented at nineteen than most comedians much much older.......
fucking 19!
You can pickup Richard Pryor's influence on him in this
2 minutes in and im in bits.the best ever
The G.O.A.T
After seeing this, I need to go to rewatch Delirious for like the 10th time. Thanks for the upload.
Ed CAN NOT BOMB!!! Every thing he says is hilarious

Dwayne Louis before Eddie, before Richard there was Redd Foxx and he was a pioneer for all those comedians who came after him
Thanks for the upload
3:28, now thinking about it, somebody did this joke 20 years later on Comicview.
Damn even Aries spears and Jamie fox stole from him too
Yeah, but best believe he got a fat ass check tho. 🤣🤣
Eddie is love, eddie is life
back when eddie was eddie I love it...
Can't believe he finished last. Shit is still funny af in 2020.
Karl Martin He came 2nd... they meant last placing as in it was the last group stage...
Eddie was following Richard Pryor hard here. He even has his mannerisms in the way he does his voices. Even did a few of Richards jokes. It's true though, everybody borrows from the legends.
He did that president getting shot joke so many times but it’s always just as funny
Crazy to hear some of these jokes before the Delirious tour.
Goddamn he was too funny
6:13 Jackie Mason. -Damn! This guy funny.
You can see how he polished up this material for Delerious. Suttle changes but way more punch.
Just Amazing
This is GOLD!!!
Pure, comic genious. #GOAT
Amazing how much he inherited from Pryor.
Thank fuck for Richard Pryor. Cause without him there would be no Eddie
Cracked me up at "see the queens basketball team become undefeated" :)))
Wow so many delirious jokes perfected!
Did the guy at the start actually say "catapult him to fame, fortune & a LAST place finish at the New York Big Laff Off" ??? WTF? Last? Seriously? You'll never see someone this good at stand-up at 19 years old EVER again. Not seen before or since.
Damn he the GOAT!
Eddie Murphy really is a freak of nature.
best comedians martin Lawrence eddie grew up in hard times man.
Elijah Melendez hell yeah
I can't get enough of the first 4 minutes of this! 😂
7:02 "They're coming to Queens!" 😂
00:24-He took a risk😮!!!!!! Lol!
Parts of the way he does his comedy in this clip are very familiar to Richard Pryor
That was initial idol and what made him want to do standup
I wish I had that much confidence at 19
If Eddie Murphy ran for president I'd for sure vote for him
Like I did with his tape and the hamburger joke, I would went to school and sounded like him and had a crowd around and told some of these jokes! Peace!
Inspired the Movie *Get OUT* 6:08
Wow imagine this bit today lol
Gen Z is stupid
COMING TO AMERICA!!!!! LOL 6:40
Yes.
MrZombiejoe The most common part.
MrZombiejoe: Spins globe, stops with finger: "QUEENS!"
**Cuts to stock footage of a Concorde**
LOL It's just funny how that went, being that this is a few years earlier.
"A last place finish on 'The New York Laff Off'." I wonder where the winner is now?
never saw him again. he walked out looking like a goofy looking dork and that was a big part of his routine. he sucked. I was 11 when I saw this on Showtime so I don't remember much about it. @@Houmatt A black lady won that competition. Does anyone now her name?
Str8 dope.
Brilliant
"...see the South Queen's basketball team suddenly become undefeated" 🤣
6:50 Lil Yachty was alive in the 80's
The LEGEND OF COMIDEY!!👈👍👍🤘
He so young in this
There is only three. Richard. George. And fucking Eddie genius Murphy. 70mil Netflix deal.
He is still the best. Sorry Jerry.
I never found Jerry funny at all.
m ch George in George Wallace?
Myst ditto his punch line are senseless
Holy crap, 19. I was such a weenie by comparison at that age. Amazing.
The best
The stuff he said about Queens was so true lol
Balls of steel
All I can say is , wow 👌🏿 , well done Eddie
Well done
His impressions are great..what makes him a great actor.
FYI - EDDIE MURPHY IS RETURNING ON 5/15/2020 ON NETFLIX FOR AROUND $100 MILLION DOLLARS!!!
Why wasn't eddie murphy one of the ghostbusters ? It seems like it would be a perfect fit for him at that time in life. Instead we get winslow .
@@calebmatiene7777 thanks for the info. I love that one too but not as much
this is fucking legendary
During this time, he had so much lead way to make anything fun. If he did this now, his career would be on toilet from day 1.
Fucking love eddie
Who was the black lady who won beat Eddie on this show? I've been trying to find her name to see how her career went but I never heard of or saw her again after this show in 1981. Does anyone now her name?
Marsha Warfield from night court won that day 😎
Just for everyone’s information... He came 2nd... they meant last placing as in it was the last group stage...
Natural talent, ruined by hollywood in the late 90's
that's wow
Ed at his best
1st black president joke 🤣😂
that president Shiz was too funny
1:15 😂😂😂😂
Ive never seen this set
40+ years ago but a completely modern set. go back to footage from 1941 stand up and you won't see the same
"Were coming to queens" Years later....Coming to America 🥳
God forbid he would have did this in 2018 lmfao
