What I would do is take a can, put a stone or some other rattler inside the can. Seal the can so the stone doesn't come out. Then put it on top of the vibrating hopper where the birds can't see it. It will rattle every time they put a cap in and get them used to the sound so they aren't so scared. They will also associate they sound of the can with getting food.
Really like what you are doing!! Just a thought... that maybe the soda cans are too big... quite a jump from bottle tops to cans!! I know there is a similar project where they trained crows to pick up cigarette butts in a park for a food rewards. So it might be down to the size of the litter Keep up the amazing project!
Hi Hans, I am a graduate from animal care and husbandry and I absolutely adore your work. It is an amazing idea worth publishing! Keep the good work and get some credit too! You deserve it :-) (btw Corvidae are super intelligent so they might learn by copying , but try using mitten or puppet that resembles another magpie, so they can recognize individual from its own species)
Yes. I have a go with a 'bird puppet' but first, i have to et the birds 'used to' the ipad...right now they don't approach the machine as long as the ipad is there...right now it's turned off, they still dont dare...As i said in the video-clip...things where easier when they where 'chicks'...patience is the name of the game right now.
I love your bird project and the idea with the ipad is very interesting! I am so glad that i`ve found your channel and can't wait to see the next updates. Keep up the good work and stay healthy in this crazy corona times.
@@sturm3d That might be a problem. The eyes of birds can detect UV-light, so they see the environment different than human. The ipad is build to reproduce a picture that the humans see in reality. But there won´t be any UV-light in the screen of the ipad.
@@flyingsquirrel2620 on top of that is that they perceive their environment in another frequency, it's likely birds see nothing but a flickering screen.. but correct me if i am wrong..
Evem if the birds don't respond to / learn from the video, that's an interesting experiment in itself. I think it would be fascinating to see some footage of that. Does anybody know if an experiment involving video as a teaching aid has been done? Either with birds or mammals (maybe primates)?
I just hooked the ipad up...but as i said, the birds are really suspicious...but of course still very interested in the peanuts. I'll let the system run for a while and see if the birds get used to it. The ipad also plays sound...that is, the buzzing, to the birds well known sound from the dispener, can be heard from he ipad...maybe to many impressions...wait and see. /Hans
Probably not the exact thing you are asking for but primates are often studied for their cognitive abilities and they are very good at operating touching screens, tablets.. So they can use them and I guess it is possible that they would understand a task from screen in order to get to treat:-)
vicarious learning( learning by observation ) is an approach that not many people take on animal behaviour but is definitely a good one, if the IPAD is HD would be better.
I think you could better results with more interesting food. While peanuts are nice, birds have a hard time digesting them. How about mixing up oat flakes with salad oil and feed this? The oil keeps the moisture from soaking into the oat flakes. But you'll need a different dispensing system, like a screw which turns until something of the mixture is falling down :)
There are studies that show that birds can lern from videos. But there the birds lerned by observing the behaviour of other birds. Maybe it would be better to shoot the video with an arteficial bird.
Yes...if i only had an artificial bird or enough skills i a 3D-game design system like Unreal or Unity... Lets see how r´this turns out...Heavy rain right now so i had to save the ipad...and the birds get a chance to come back to the machine again...guess i need patiente with this...
Hi there, my kiddo loves your videos so much. However, there aren't any very basic explanations of Raspberry Pi out there for a very young kiddo, like 4-5 yo. Is it possible to do a video that is very basic simple explanation of Raspberry Pi? An American 4 yo would be very grateful.
Birds learn from copying each other, eh? So there is that. If your write everything down, you might end up with a doctoral thesis :)
It would be nice to find mitten in shape of a bird, to make instruction even more explanatory :D

A few more years and the magpies are pressing buttons to like the videos!

I like your thinking, you can't overestimate the birds' ability to observe and adopt. You also raise the suspension..
The othe question is, can they actually read what is ona screen..

First time to your cancel. I can hear your swedish accents. 😁. Great content. Thanks
Everything you've done is quite interesting. Thank you for making such interesting content. I look forward to more as a new subscriber.
Thanks for the update Hans. Have a good day. ✋ +1 for the Tintin Moon Rocket..

great idea. I will try to do the same. Thanks!
This is a really nice idea even if it doesn't work. You have great merit just for the sake of trying 😄

Si
Thst was actually a good idea haha
nice
I think if you give it a little more seeds it would be better 😊
Just call the project Soda-Scan
Tycker inte alls det är en dum idé! De är sjukt mycket smartare än vad man tror!
Hand with can hovers too long in the whole, magpie would think that it is doing something there
I think the video is a good idea. Birds cannot differentiate video from real life most of the time so perhaps they can learn from that.
То есть, вы хотите показать птицам, как надо делать, используя планшет? Нормально так. Обязательно делитесь результатами
Maybe someone can 3D animate a bird putting the can in.
another sub good video
vengo de un poco de todo, hola, hi, bonjour
