Dr. Bronner's Toothpaste Ingredients: A Dentist's Take

- My grandfather unflinchingly included teeth brushing as one of the original 18-in-1 uses of the Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap. I don’t deny that. It works. It will clean your teeth. But it tastes like soap. He had the happy advantage of being able to take his teeth out of his mouth before he brushed them, so perhaps he didn’t notice?
In 2015, Dr. Bronner’s came out with the All-One Toothpaste, with 70% organic ingredients. I still remember those days when the toothpaste was in development and anyone who walked through the office got snagged to try out the latest formulation. I’m sure our dentists were all blown away by our super clean teeth. All the time and care in development was totally worth it - the toothpaste took off and hasn’t looked back.
In true Dr. Bronner’s style, it flouts many cultural norms: it doesn’t produce copious foam, it doesn’t contain fluoride, and it doesn’t have artificial whiteners or anything else. It also contains ingredients you don’t see elsewhere. I mean, coconut flour? Are we making a cake here or brushing our teeth? These differences generate a lot of questions from consumers. These are our teeth we’re talking about after all. We want them to last a lifetime!
Because of this cultural defiance and consumer uncertainty, I sought the input of someone who knows a whole lot more than I do - as many do - on what really matters. Dr. Mariza Muñoz, a dentist and orthodontist, gives us some insight into the whys and wherefores of this toothpaste’s unique ingredients and how they work.
To put to rest any nagging doubts, Dr. Muñoz received no compensation other than what you see at the end of the video. Then again, those were a pretty fine set of soap dentures I gave her at the end…

This is honestly the finest toothpaste I have ever used. Once again it is a Bronner product I look forward to using. It does, over time, dissolve plaque and whiten. Finally, the Anise was a delightful surprise.
Excellent! That's great to hear!
Aren't you a bit concerned about the lack of Flouride?
I would be concerned about the lack of fluoride if my intention was to lower my IQ.... I have all my teeth and ZERO cavities.
well shit that works for me..@@803mastiff9
@@duckbrewfluoride is bad for the brain and mental clarity.
Wish you would have touched on gum disease. But I will try your product
My nieces & nephews would think I'm a crackpot, but I'll take a crack at this fabled soap for my teeth. Let's wait and see!
I love my cinnamon!!!
@5:01 "...and normally children like the Anise one, because..."
I am no child, and I like the Anise flavor.
I purchased the 4-pack (consisting of 1 tube, each, of the 4 flavors (now that Spearmint is available)).
I tried the Spearmint first, and it was very good. It took a few brushings, to get used to the absence of foam (that I was conditioned, over the decades, to expect). Now I prefer the absence of foam.
Next, I tried the Anise flavor.
Initially, I preferred the Spearmint. But like a song that does not initially grab you, the Anise flavor grew on me. I now prefer it over the Spearmint flavor.
I have yet to try the cinnamon flavor or the peppermint flavor. But I expect that they will both taste good (maybe I will discover a new favorite?).
Air pockets:
For decades, I was using popular brands found in the supermarket. Without exception (as far as I remember), they all had air pockets.
So you are squeezing the tube, and suddenly you lose 25% of what you thought was paste in the tube, because that pocket of air suddenly get released.
I have not had any air pockets in my Dr. Bronner's tubes (and I am close to finishing my second tube). So what you see and feel is what you get. No deceptive larger tube, 25% filled with air.
Lastly:
I do not know if it is my imagination, but my mouth feels cleaner. It took a couple of weeks, and it hit me, that my mouth feels fresher and natural.
Cheers!
Ha! What a fun review! It's great to hear you're enjoying our toothpastes so far. I'd love to hear what you think of the Peppermint and Cinnamon flavors once you've given them a try. I have a hard time picking a favorite flavor myself. :)
You do not want flouride intake from of water. Get it from Green Tea if anything
I’m ready for that spearmint!! 😍😍
Hi Joanna- Spearmint is available now! It's rolling out to retailers now and it's 20% off on the Dr. Bronner's webstore at shop.drbronner.com/

@@GabrielG603 Hi Gabriel- We don't have any new scents planned currently, but I'll pass your suggestion along. Sal Suds, our household cleaner comes in pine scent though.
Started using this a year ago based on the lack of harmful chemicals etc
But a year on and my gum/teeth health has deteriorated.
I am not attributing this to the toothpaste but would just like to find out if anybody else has experienced this ?
Good video. Fluoride is not essential in the least and should be removed as much as possible from human consumption and if possible, compeletly eliminated. The same goes for chlorine which is something else commonly found in most people's drinking waters today. Both of them are neurotoxic and have no where near enough impact on mouth hygiene to warrant them being in drinking water or toothpaste. Their is also science to suggest they play a role in the disruption of the gut microbiome and therefore have a larger net effect on your overall healthy body function and even lifespan.
Everything you said needs a scientific source.
@choltzapple If I cared if you believed me or not then perhaps. You can do your research on it or you can take my word for it. That's up to you. I do however read scientific journals and only get my information from recent and relevant sources. Again, do the work yourself. I'm in a comment section on youtube not writing a peer-reviewed article.
@choltzapple The fact that chlorine and fluoride disrupt the gut microbiome is actually the least studied part of what I said and even that has an incredibly relevant and recent study behind it with a wide consensus coming from the scientific community. Everything else I stated has already been widely accepted as fact by people keeping up to date on the extensive research regarding all those topics.
I'm happy that .y husband does research like you do and knows this as well. It's sad what our government is doing to us
That was unexpectedly entertaining and informative... 🪥🧼🫧
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
So does the tooth paste prevent cavities?
Desert Essence uses NEEM in their toothpaste that by the way I use to use since I found yours, what could be the difference in quality and teeth fighting natural agents in that? By the way I LOVE CINNAMON 😀👍
Hi there- Neem Leaf or bark extract is becoming a popular ingredient in toothpaste because of its ability to reduce plaque on teeth and for its antibacterial properties. In our toothpaste, coconut flour, silica, calcium carbonate, and baking soda all contribute to remove plaque, debris, and surface stains. There is little research available about the antibacterial benefits of neem oil, but the amount of neem oil in a toothpaste is likely not significant enough to provide any noticeable benefit. Additionally, neem oil is a popular natural pesticide and is moderately toxic to aquatic life. At this time, we’re not looking to incorporate this ingredient into our products.
I love the Spearmint
That's my favorite too!
I bought a peppermint one for $4 and I didn't like it at all, I switched back to Tom's
Will Dr. Bronner’s sell toothpaste for sensitive teeth in the future?
YES
Lit
Is this toothpaste ok for sensitive gums?
Hi Jennifer- While we do not make a toothpaste specifically for sensitive teeth or gums, with an RDA (relative dentin abrasivity) level of 119.92 ± 3.67, many have found that our All-One Toothpaste fits their needs.
What’s the RDA value of the toothpaste?
Hi Steve- RDA measures how abrasive a toothpaste is to the tooth enamel that protects the dentin beneath it. All dentifrices at or below 2.5 times the reference value, or 250 RDA, are considered safe and effective. Dr. Bronner’s Toothpaste measures at 119.92 ± 3.67 - well within the federal and international limits and is considered safe for a lifetime of continued use.
This dentist is a bit ingenuous. Silica is sand-abrasive to the "glass" on your teeth (as she called it). Fluoride is only in municipal water. About 25% of people in the US are not on municipal water and I am sure much higher elsewhere. Personally, not a fan of fluoridated water, prefer it just in my toothpaste. She lost some credibility in my eyes (catering to advertising this product). Does not mean I won't use the product, but I take the dentist's comments with a grain of salt. I do like that the toothpaste doesn't contain SLS which I have found I have problems with, but I find that it is missing in a lot of generic toothpastes (read the label).
Wait a minute, do you think you need fluoride in your toothpaste? Seriously?
@@davidbrucemusicvideo some do. not a one side fits all.
@@jamiehershon Um, no… it’s a drug that is a neurotoxin, and it was put in the water that the Jews drank during the Nazi regime to dumb them down. Look into it a little bit, my friend. You would be surprised what you find.🧡
@@davidbrucemusicvideo you're wrong friend
@@jamiehershon actually, I’m not. I have been researching this since 2002, and the last time I was at a dentist was February 2020, told my new dentist that I had not used fluoride since 2002, and my last cleaning was 2007. The guy was amazed because he said my teeth were totally healthy, and I was 55 years old in 2002.
Just do some research, my friend. 🧡 Not trying to fight with you, just letting you know that some of us understand things if we have researched them for a while, which I have been doing for years.
Also, fluoride is an actual drug that is allowed to be distributed in water sources in America without a prescription, and you don’t know how much fluoride you’re getting if you’re where the water first starts coming out into your town, or if you’re at the end of the line.
Also, if you’re drinking this water, you’re ingesting fluoride. But if you look at your fluoride toothpaste, the back of the package has a warning saying that you need to go to a poison control center if you ingest toothpaste in the amount of the size of a pea. There’s a reason for that, my friend. (if you haven’t seen this warning before, just go ahead and grab your tube of crest, or whatever you have, and you will see it right there.)
But this toothpaste has no expiration date. Kinda weird. How do you explain that?
Hi there- Our All-One Toothpaste has a 3-year shelf life from its manufacture date, which is represented by a lot code either on the crimped end of the tubes or on one of the small ends of the cardboard box and are in the form of a Julian date. The first number of the Julian Date will always represent the year that the products were manufactured. In the first example, products that begin with 1, represent 2021. The next 3 digits will what day out of 365 the product was manufactured. For example, February 1 is 032. We recommend that you use the product up 12 months after opening, before the 3-year mark.
What about the Citric Acid?
Hi there- The citric acid in our toothpaste serves as a pH adjuster, to bring the pH of the toothpaste down from slightly alkaline to nearer neutral. It also acts as a chelating agent, which helps prevent build up on teeth.

Doe it prevent cavities?
Hi Joshua- With regular use, our All-One Toothpaste can help maintain healthy oral hygiene, thus helping reduce the chances of getting cavities. However, our product will not help get rid of cavities that already exist.
I’m curious why after ordering 2 tubes of this toothpaste, the stuff dries up and hardens in about two months, and it’s extremely hard to get out of the tube, and I wonder why the 800 number found on the box is no longer working.
Hi Dave- What you're describing is not normal for our All-One Toothpaste. Thank you for letting us know. Please reach out to our Customer Service Team at

Safe for dogs?
Hi there- We haven’t explored this usage of the toothpaste, so we don’t fully know. Based on the ingredients, it seems like it would be okay, but check with your veterinarian to confirm. If you do get the go ahead, try the Anise flavor. Animals don’t typically like peppermint flavoring and the Cinnamon toothpaste is a bit spicy.
Watch out black maybe someone's name.
Why the packaging speaks of god ,,that's what i really want to know
If you read the entire package, you would see the Bronner family is of German-Jewish faith. I am not judging you though, fear of God is healthy! :)
dr. bronner was an interesting man. rip.
The subtitles being in Spanish makes this video really difficult to watch for those of us that rely on the CC but speak/read English and not Spanish. A better option may have been to do the CC in English and then have a user provided Spanish translation.
Kelly S the same could be said about those who rely on the CC to translate to spanish.
No, it couldn’t. They are separate options when using CZcams. Instead of uploading the Spanish translation as the “closed captions” they could’ve uploaded it as the “English-Spanish” translation, which would’ve been more appropriate AND is where a person that prefers to have the text in Spanish would normally look for a translation. Using the closed captioning option instead of the Spanish option means that Deaf or hard of hearing people cannot easily understand this video, AND it is a confusing place to put the Spanish translation for people that rely on that.
I wish they cut out the glycerin though ☹️

Are you actually a real bronner employee or just a leach?
Hi there- Emanuel Bronner, or Dr. Bronner who founded Dr. Bronner's Soaps, was my grandfather. He passed away in 1997 and the company was then run by his two sons - my dad Jim and my uncle Ralph, assisted by my mom Trudy. When my dad passed away the following year, my oldest brother David took the helm and was joined soon after my other brother Mike. They still run the company today. As often happens in a family-owned business, I’ve worn many different hats at the company over the years although my current role and title is Dr. Bronner’s consumer educator, advocate, and company spokesperson and editor-in-chief of the website, Going Green with Lisa Bronner.
