In this Haikyuu!! video essay I dive into the mind of Kenma Kozume. In anticipation of his role in the new movie, Hiakyuu!! The Dumpster Battle, I wanted to give him a full character analyze of his inspiring journey to falling in love with volleyball.

I do like Kenma’s development to “I don’t wanna be here, I wanna go home” to “You know what? I’m actually gonna start trying”

Being surrounded by monster players, he is a monster himself when it comes to strategy.

I always thought it was funny how Kenma and Tsukishima are very similar Hinata gets along well with Kenma and can’t stand Tsukishima.

Kenma story and character is my favourite in Haikyuu, I love the intelligence of him and his character arc in the nationals was so fun

Ah, my favourite child Kenma ❤️ I really do love him and his character a lot.
    Movie spoilers past this point!!
One thing I noticed after the movie though, was that for all his apathy and his frankly unhinged train of thought when on the court (like Kenma please you are playing volleyball WHY are you committing psychological warfare on your opponents 😂), Kenma is actually such a deeply caring, loyal, and even sentimental person. Think back to that moment during the last point in the movie, where we see things in Kenma’s POV and he flashes back to the training camp, the sepia tone of the memory and how everyone was frozen in time as the camera does a 360 degree panning shot to take everyone in. He clearly values and cherishes that memory a lot to be thinking of it at such a critical moment, and thinks back fondly of that time and place and the people there with him even though training camps are probably loud and exhausting and messy and everything he dislikes. Think back again too to that last point in the Sarukawa match in S4, when he remembers the moment he told Hinata that Nekoma were strong together and it cut to that 360 shot of the Nekoma boys’ faces and their fists in a circle for their team chant that he always insisted was lame. If he and Kuroo are 9/10 years old when they met, Kenma would have played volleyball for at least 10 years before quitting, maybe more if they had been younger when they met. He doesn’t even particularly like volleyball at first, but he did it for Kuroo. And yes, he later finds fulfilment in being their strategist and winning, but their post-match talk after Sarukawa also proves that in no small part, Kenma’s effort is due to wanting to do his best for the people he calls his team. He is actually such a dedicated friend. No wonder all of Nekoma adores him and listens to his words like it’s a command. No wonder they trust him so unhesitatingly. No wonder they all still gather at his house to hang out as adults (the bonus magazines they handed out at the Japan movie premier even specifies that they show up uninvited and he lets them 😂). I bet not even Kuroo had imagined just how RIGHT he was when he called Kenma Nekoma’s brain and also its heart.

Kenma mixing in video game tactics into Volleyball and viewing Hinata as a boss was such an awesome analogy.
Kenma was a brilliant strategist and gave the boss (Hinata) a challenge, but Hinata was a boss that only got stronger the more you challenge him.

there is also the point that kageyama actually respects kenma as a setter because of his insane strategic style that despite getting coddle by the saves of his team, kenma actually has his own style of defeating or fooling blockers and despite being not-as-competitive-as-kageyama and as physically active, kenma actually puts the best and consistent set he could have for his spikers and being able to contribute silently to his team as the brain that he should be

My favorie thing Kenma did was unintentionally inspiring Fukunaga to become a comedian.

*** SLIGHT MOVIE AND MANGA SPOILERS ***
can't believe kenma got into volleyball because his bestie roped him into it and he was like kfine then eventually gaining a love for the game, his team, and his role as nekoma's setter. when he told hinata his team was strong and when he told his teammates in spring high that he (somtimes) wanted to do well for his friends!!! when started going full-out and started adopting the creepy ghost kid persona lmao. when he said he never wanted the dumpster battle to end because he was happy!!! and when he thanked kuroo for getting him into volleyball at the end of their match!!! LITERAL TEARS. kenma has come a long way. he truly is such an endearing character!
