FIXING DAD - The BBC Film about a Family Reversing Type 2 Diabetes

  • Want to reverse the diabetes of someone you love? Fixing Dad is a positive story of hope showing the recovery of a man from type 2 diabetes and the associated health complications.
When their dad Geoff was getting his affairs in order and the threat of diabetic foot amputation loomed, film-makers Anthony and Ian Whitington decided to step in. With their cameras holding him accountable for every aspect of his destructive lifestyle, they turn his stubborn resistance into iron resolve. As Geoff fought to regain his health amidst mounting complications, his sons battled against his years of poor diet, bad habits and ingrained negativity, with little more than hope and gritty determination to get them through.
There are no quick fixes as the brothers attempt to transform their dad from a barely mobile night security guard to a fighting fit endurance cyclist and global speaker on defeating type 2 diabetes. With more than a third of adults in the UK pre-diabetic - and millions living with type 2 already - they show that if Geoff can do it, anyone can. Through humour, support and determination, the family reminds us that those we love make us strong and that a life we love is worth fighting for.

KETO/very-low carb put me right! I was pre-diabetic, 69 years old, many symptoms creeping up. Now I'm 35 again, 27kg lighter, and my symptoms have all gone, and my blood results normal once again. LOVE eating keto-style: steak and eggs and bacon, fish fried in butter, marrowbones for soup, cream in my coffee, and a bit of veg as a garnish. NO fruit (nature's candy! evil stuff). And I seem to eat a lot less as steak and butter fills me up... so the expense of organic steak is offset by no junk food, no extra snacks etc. Win win!

Thank you so much for making this film. I'm 54 and was diagnosed with Type 2 3 months ago. I haven't taken it seriously until a few weeks ago, when I started doing research. Last year I went through menopause and got a sweet tooth due to hormone imbalance. The doctor told me this was quite common and as a result many women get Diabetes after menopause. Why isn't the info stressed more? It's like a conspiracy or silence. Your film has inspired me to go on the low carb diet I've read so much about. I'm still young. I have years of life yet, and I don't want to spend it as an invalid. Thanks again. :)

I think what saved their dad most was they became a support to him and walked with him through this journey to health. So many people die everyday cause of giving up on themselves and not having belief and confidence in themselves that they can be and do better. He proba la could not have recovered in this way without the love and support of tmhis sons pushing him to be better. Having loving people in your life can make such a big difference in how you choose to live.

It's really nice seeing at least some semblance of first-world health care in the UK. Both of my parents died in their early 60s, largely due to lack of medical care especially preventative screening. I'm watching my boss follow the standard "progression" of diabetes, and he's got decent medical care now but it's only because he's old enough to have Medicare which starts at age 65. I've talked and talked with the guy about his diet and how he can halt the progress of his type II diabetes and even reverse it, and he simply won't change his diet. Everyone I know (here in the US) who has diabetes or is overweight or both, will get worse and worse and die too young, before they'll change their diets. I watched another docu about the NHS and the fight against diabetes and there was a lady with a tent set up, offering free screenings, it was amazing - we used to have those long ago, here in the US. They'd set up in the park or most of the time at a library or Senior Center and screen for diabetes, all for free. As the US gets worse and worse, things like that are only distant memory. It will cost me a lot of money to just get tested for A1C which is the test to see if you're diabetic or pre-diabetic. Carry on, and don't let anyone interfere with the NHS!

I live in Oklahoma and on Social security now with type 2 and trying to fight it myself. This is what I'm looking for. Real people fighting the real fight with real hope!! Even a nutritionist told me to take metformin and live it up. Her comment "You don't expect to live forever do you" the advice from a "professional" here. So many conflicting stories here on CZcams, plant based only, keto only, even keto plant based only, we are right, you are wrong camps everywhere, medical community is ignorant on the subject in many cases it seems. Thanks for your sharing.

A touching documentary that perfectly captured the frustrations of people in this situation. It was also infuriating to hear the medical professionals lack of knowledge and ignorance about T2D and its reversability. This was made in 2016/17 (?) but in 2010 my cardioligist reversed my pre-T2D by getting me educated and having me follow a ketogenic diet. It's been known for decades that a LCHF diet or a full ketogenic diet can reverse many of the "modern" diseases caused by too much sugar and ultra-processed carbs. Hopefully this will change but it needs to happen sooner or more people are destined for a miserable middle and late age and early death from lack of decent advice.

Why did we not see what was happening now I know we could have helped him. Turns out he was on prescription drugs he had no need being on you know the kind doctors put old people on statins, aspirin, anti acids and flu jabs. He had been a smoker in the past and so when he started feeling not well probably thought the worst, as we are all repeated told that one in three will get cancer. Slowly, eating less because the anti acids weren't working, which of course don't work and the doctors know best situation he became so deficient he had a stroke and then taken into hospital where they well and truly finished him off.

Diet is the most important factor in regaining health; regular mild-moderate exercise and strength training helps, especially for autophagy but it's not necessary, T2D can be cured with diet and fasting alone. Those who are obese should concentrate on weight loss through diet before they start putting stress on their joints and organs with heavy exercise. At least... that's my personal take.

bit concerned here. It is very well documented that type 2 diabetes is a self-made disease. 99% of type 2 diabetics can reverse and get rid of the illness by changing lifestyle, including activities/exercise, and diet. I am a little surprised that the message doesn't seem to be getting through to mainstream. Type 2 is a 'cause and effect' illness. you cause it.
Thoroughly enjoyed the film, very uplifting. Good job guys.

That maybe because current advice does not recommend limiting carbs upping healthy fats, Davidm to reverse type 2 and reduce/eliminate the need for (expensive for the NHS) medication. Once this changes, we may begin to see our population's health start to improve and pre-diabetes/type 2 diabetes figures decline.

Wow what an Amazing Film,so thought provoking, Brilliant,Beautiful story of the Love of Their Father. They cared so much to help their Dad make Vital Life changing decisions, that at times brought fear and helplessness into all of their lives. To see the way that Geoff made this changes was was really an honour to watch. I got goosebumps watching Geoff getting to the finish line after his huge race for Diabetes. The best thing of all was Seeing Geoff speaking out in front of an Audience of People, getting this Vital message out. What a champion you are Geoff.. to his Sons,Thankyou for getting this Important message out,and for Caring and Loving your Dear Dad ❤️

About Dad's refusal to cook - Why can't you just teach Marilyn how to fix/cook proper food for him and how to pack his lunch? Teach her keto. She's already cooking so why not just teach her the dos and don'ts? I'm missing something here.

I reversed my diabetes though diet. Its pretty simple don't eat the sugar or carbs, and you won't need the insulin. I eat meats, salads, berries, yogurt, eggs, mushrooms green fruits like cucumbers and peppers. But more important what I don't eat, Sugary fruits, candy, carbs (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes), bad oils (omega 6's) seed oil and veg oil, peanut oil, margarine. My tip is Eat lots of good fats (avacado, oilve oil, nuts, butter, fatty meats like bacon, or steak) because fat makes you feel full and satisfied. If your starving and hungry all the time your diet won't last very long. Don't count calories, Just eat protein and fats, and some veggies.

I discovered Veganism almost 4 years ago. I lost well over 140 pounds, It so good I have peope I know who is shocked, dismayed, a doctor thought I had to become a drug addict. She thought it was no way I could lost 120 plus pounds in 18 months, Trust me it was hard. I reached a point that this lifestyle had me skipping meals. I wasnt hungry as I used to be. I tot scared during Covid as I did no exercise d say many weeks of a 3 to 5 pounds lost in a week...But now to am so deep into it, I am upset if my scale shows a 2 to 3 pounds weight gain. I learned that Vegan Junk food exists. I am careful now to never skip reading labels

I guess there's still not much hope listening to the doctor's and experts in the video. It's not carbs that cause diabetes, it's ultra processed food. Unfortunately there's way too much money there to do anything about that soon. It took decades before action was taken against tobacco even.

I can't express how angry it makes me when someone makes no distinction between the simplest carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates, and this especially when it comes from a physician (@14:17) who is expected to provide clarity and insight. Indigestible fiber is a carbohydrate that we need and come from plant foods that contain a superabundance of carbohydrates, most of which are complex.

He said eat above ground vegetables they have fibre and are carbs. But reality is the aren’t needed. Animal protein and fats is all you need.

@@CountBeetle The evidence provided by "petrified poopies" from our cave-man ancestors suggests that we should eat a high-fiber diet that provides between 100 and 200 grams of fiber per day.
