Wireless Android Auto on my 2020 Toyota Corolla! Using CarPlay CarlinKit 4 First Impression Review

  • Finally got Android Auto working on my 2020 Corolla! (No thanks to Toyota) I bought a product called CarlinKit 4.0 for under $100 CAD which made my Head Unit work wirelessly with my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE! Rejoice!! I can finally have WhatsApp messages in my car!
    This should work for newer Samsung Galaxy S23 owners as well!
    UPDATE: September 2023 - I've been getting a lot of questions about whether to buy the new CarlinKit 5. If you ONLY have CarPlay in your head-unit, get the CarlinKit 4 (the blue one). The CarlinKit 5 won't convert CarPlay into AA (as I understand it).

      @@squishyhammer well...we hit a roadblock on this previously sucessful story. The Carlinkit 4.0 worked extremely well in the 2020Corolla until my wife upgraded from her Samsung S21 to a new S24. Android Auto still works but using the phone has gone haywire. We figure it has to be a configuration issue either in the phone or the 4.0. The unit can make and receive calls but no audio is passed. Have been ready to tear some hair out on this one. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

      If since everything in the old S21 seemed to work flawlessly, I can't think why your S24 would produce such a symptom, aside from being pretty new. If all else, I'm leaning towards maybe the CarlinKit requires some sort of firmware update specific for the S24? only an assumption. Thanks for watching! I haven't found it to disconnect while driving however once in a while the screen does switch to the entune screen near when I start. I thought it may be when I switch the gears through park, reverse, and drive there may be some sort of power glitch but it happens seldomly. If movement of the cable is an issue, I think the best approach would be replacing the usb cable or yes, as you mentioned, stick the box somewhere else (3m under the dash?)

    I have carlinkit's full android box with ability to also connect android auto from a couple years ago... works, but a little clunky since it has to power a standalone android OS plus connect to android auto from the phone. • @squishyhammer
      @squishyhammer  Před rokem

      To be honest I do experience a bit of a lag with the touch responses. It's not too bad - since I expected something wireless to behave with a reasonable delay. As for the screen, most of the time its decently smooth with gmaps, I really have no intense apps to put it to the test with. I have yet to wifi into it to refine any relatable settings but I'll be sure to record a later video on it to see any notable changes. As for night mode, funny you suggest that because I had experienced a few random instances where it would start in daytime mode and not switching to night, blinding me really... not sure if its my fault but I set it to only display at night mode all the time afterwards!

      @@brendonmcmillan5589 Yes I heard many cases of such. There was a total lack of miscommunication on Toyotas part and / or that sales guys just straight out lied to us. It pisses me off that other countries have AA updates except us.

      @@squishyhammer So even though android Auto isn't on my car this device will let it run android auto? its been months since this video. How do you like it?

      @@brendonmcmillan5589 Yes if you only have the same Wired CarPlay, this device will basically let your Galaxy phone stream Android Auto using the CarPlay interface somewhat as a shell. Works fantastic still! Use it daily.

      @@squishyhammer Sorry if im bothering you. I live in America. The Carlinkit's I'm finding on amazon say "Fit for Factory Wired CarPlay Cars" does that not mean that my s23 wont work since the corolla doesn't have fit for factory

    Hardest video to not click off i have ever seen. Oh and delete your phone from the car radio not just the car from your phone.i have the 2019 corolla hatchback, same issue, it may be fixed via Toyota by the time you point

      I havent picked up my car yet, used, but, because of your video I will be getting one of these. Do you know if you can wire your phone to it instead of bluetooth? Or just power pass-through? I have the same phone as you in this video which makes me laugh. Its like the perfect video for me, it was 2019 hatchback and 2020 sedan. Not sure if there ever was an update via Toyota. Thanks for the video eh

      @@stiggsmasta I'm glad to be the guinea pig lol - the s20 has been working well with it. Aside from the lack of native AA, the 2020 still is an awesome drive! I just did a test with the usb end of the CarlinKit wired to the phone and the screen charging indicator does appear to be passing power (charging the phone). I also tried unpairing bluetooth to see if it works with AA via wired - *seems* to work as well if needed to though I haven't done a full test on that... Cheers

      Just picked up the car. Going to order this box tonight. Not sure if the newer carlinkit 5 is worth it. Sure I heard that it won't do AA on a carplay only deck. As this the 4 does. I just really want my maps on the screen. I'm in ontario so everything should work as yours does. Can't believe toyota left us north Americans without AA.

      @squishyhammer  Před 9 měsíci

      Congrats! :) Yes from what I briefly understand on their website the CarlinKit 5 will not be able to transform the CarPlay into AA, so in our case go with 4.0 (the blue one) which has that ability. Yes I even recall the Australian dealerships had the upgrade for their 2020 Corolla and people actually obtained the firmware online that the technicians used (region locked though). Later the website that hosted it unfortunately got a cease-and-desist from Toyota. Our 2020 was in line later to receive it but Toyota was being finicky with Google's privacy policies at the time till they finally caved for the later models... sigh @@stiggsmasta

    Lmaoo love how you interrupt yourself with text. How's the review for this device 5 months in? Is it still working and are there any weird quirks? Really, i just want my maps screen on the car infotainment and not on my phone.
    Also get an amazon affiliate link for yourself man! i'm not buying the kit until you put one in the description!

      Lol thanks for watching! Still working like a dream. I'll look into the amazon thing but really if you see a deal go for it. Make sure its the Carlinkit 4.0 (the blue one) as well. Cheers!
