    Text in the video:
    Well first of all, we have a tour to finish! Let me show you more of the beautiful surroundings, of Port Barton.
    In all the trips I made to the Philippines, there has always been one thing I missed out on. So Jeremy is determined to show me…
    It takes some time to find them. But then… yes!
    Meeting the sea turtles definitely touched me. But no time to linger! We’re off for what seems to be the smallest island of Palawan. No palmtrees. But the attraction here is under water.
    Though it might seem they are just laying still, look what happens when I speed up the clip.
    All in all a great end of the tour. Well Port Barton doesn’t receive as many tourists as El Nido, but still new spots are popping up. Like Gorgonzola! My favorite restaurant in Palawan. They got some really nice healthy food, but also…. Well, check it out yourself!
    Next day I am still thinking about the turtles. They can live for decades, but how would their life begin? Let’s find out!
    Secret Paradise Resort was built in a little bay. Loved by Humans, and turtles.
    Mothers lay their eggs on the beach, and the resorts protects them with nets. No monitor lizard will get his claws on these. It’s always a surprise when they’ll be hatching, but it might be one of these days! Well we have to wait till it’s dark. Let’s take a look at some of the older ones first.
    After the turtles are born, they get some time in here. To grow, and survive the long way to the ocean. Only the caretakers, with really clean hands, are allowed to touch them. Oooh, look at him!
    I cross my fingers for some of the eggs hatching this night. But you’ll never know for sure…
    The only thing we can do is get off to bed, and wait…
    There has been all kind of life this night, but no baby turtles. Ah, it’s ok. After all, that’s the beauty of nature!
    And back in town there is still something to surprise me. Who knew I would end up in the middle of a celebration? Well, I didn’t! Everyone looks amazing….
    It seems like the whole village and surroundings are here to celebrate. Including me of course! Jeremy explains a bit about what’s happening.
    And then there is also this dancing competition!
    Aah, well I see them all trying their best in front of the judges. And they have to do so for quite a long time!
    I can imagine you’d get exhausted at some point, so it’s good there’s food. For everyone! Also the toursts are invited.
    And after lunch and a lot of dancing, it’s time for the cooling down.

    This information may help you a little bit. A religious festival was included in that foundation celebration. This religious festival I believe was introduced by modern day settlers from Panay esp. Aklan where the Ati-atihan festival originated. The earliest inhabitants of most of Philippine Islands are the dark skinned Aetas or Negritos. When the first horde of Bornean settlers arrived in Panay, they were welcomed by the local Aeta king. The Bornean leader negotiated with king to allow them to settle in exchange of a solid gold hat, a long gold necklace for the queen, jewelry and other goods. A peace pact was made that the Aetas will occupy the mountains and the settlers, the plains; allowing the rivers as the free route for their access to the sea. A joyous celebration followed. The new settlers painted their bodies with soot to be one with the natives. When the Spaniards came, they incorporated this celebration to the feast day of the Holy Child Jesus. That's the reason why the image/s of Holy Child Jesus is in the procession. Ati-atihan means to be like an Aeta.

      Port Barton was known to some European travelers way back in the 1980's. They were talking about sand flies that could annoy you while trying to enjoy the beach. Are they still an issue? Because Port Barton was then quite remote I heard that some beaches were clothing optional. Just curious, do they still exist? I have no issue about it but it could be to others.

    • @TravelGretl
      @TravelGretl  Před 7 lety

      Yes, indeed, there are parts of the beach with sandflies where you don't want to lay your towel. But lots of beaches with no issues at all.

    Port Barton is awesome! I was there last May 22-28! My unforgettable experience was when we had to travel from Elsa's Resort, Port Barton to another island to get to a resort called Ricky's Paradise Cove at 12mn. It was MAGICAL! The moon is shining brightly, a sky filled with stars, and the most awesome part is watching the glowing planktons come from different areas near the speed boat. 😍

    Thank you. I have not been to the Netherlands, nor have I personally known and Dutch people. My European experience was limited to Germany and Italy. I should have guessed it though. You are just too good looking to be anything else. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching.

      @TravelGretl  Před 7 lety

      +William Johnson Germany is close enough 😉 though I think the Dutch sound and look a lot like the Swiss 😊 If I put the Dutch accent on really strong I am sure you must hear it 😉

    • @thexoftexas4267
      @thexoftexas4267 Před 7 lety

      I am a little familiar with the Swiss. My next door neighbor in Korea was a Swiss general, but I really doubt if I could identify his accent today. That was a very long time ago. It was in 1974, so far back, I am not sure I could calculate it. Need more fingers and toes. It's late for you. Better get some sleep. G'night.

      And also CZcams likes it since it figures if people start to react the vid must do something to them, so maybe more people would be interested? It starts spreading the vid more easily :)

    From one of your subscribers - Great video as usual. Have been to El Nido, Underground River, Puerto Princessa, etc on Palawan, as well as about 14 other main islands. My wife, my in-laws, and I might visit PB on our next trip to PI now that you introduced me to it. Thanks for letting me know about the beautiful place. If you do not mind, please let us know your nationality. I am trying to identify your accent, but I haven't figured it out. after 20 years in the US Army, I heard a lot, but yours is a bit difficult. I am thinking European, but I am not sure what country. Am I correct? Thanks again for the good work.

    Hi Gretl,
    Is it costly to go in Port Barton?

    • @TravelGretl
      @TravelGretl  Před 7 lety +1

      That's always a relative question, what does costly mean? :) Secret Paradise Resort is really a luxury stay, but Greenview for example costs around 1.000 pesos a night. A huge pizza is more expensive than the local food. It's about the same as the rest of Palawan, a bit cheaper than El Nido
