- So this little guy rolled in yesterday, he came in on a trailer but his heart wasn't done for. Little gasoline, and a hot battery we brought her to life. The transmission seems to do its thing from what I can tell moving it around. However the freeze plug on the driver lower side is not holding in anything. This truck has the 2.8L v6, Rochester 2bbl carburetor and a 700r4 automatic transmission. Not exactly the combination I wanted. But it will do ! Thanks for watching guys, stay tuned for the build series.
There's something about the first gen sealed beams ones I like. Simple, clean, classic Chevy styling.
I would really like to upgrade it to the 91+ front end. But we will see how clean I can make this one look first. But totally agree, this is just a nice simple truck with a simple look
I prefer the older front grilles. They were made to look like the full size trucks of the time. Difference being the full size had quad lights except the work truck version. Chevy W/T.
I had an 84 s10 with a 2.8 in it. I drove it 178,000 miles and sold it to a guy who drove it for another three years....
They don't make them this good anymore.
Oh, man!! So, so, so many memories came back!! That was our first vehicle when we lived in the U.S. in the early 90's! It was a white 1986 S10, but I fell in love with it and I hope some day to be able to buy one and ship it here to Argentina! Thank you for saving it!
In high school I had an 88 that was almost identical except it had the 4 banger. It was slow as crap lol but dependable!
kyle wr Did you have the Iron duke?
Still have a 91 with an iron duke. It refuses to die.
@LoudNProud I've seen Iron duke engines with 500K miles on them if properly cared for
I've become something of an expert on S10 trucks in my community
my latest creation is a 1992 S10 truck with an AMC 4.0 liter strait 6 transplanted from a 1996 jeep cherokee XJ ,,it also has the XJ front axle and suspension ,, it's turbocharged and produces just shy of 300HP at the wheels
That's actually what I'm looking at for my first self purchased truck she's manual everything except for brakes and steering with the iron duke and a five speed
I'm glad you are saving her! S10s are great little trucks! Thank you Jaysmart! I guess with every "crappy" engine there are success stories. I've been around several 2.8V6 engines with well over 250k miles on original engines! Jaysmart if will find the fuel injection version with manual transmission in the 89-93 versions are way peppier! Glad you are saving her! Cool project! Oh yea it's 91-93 front clip your talking about and 1994 S10 Blazers are still the square bodies. Awesome Jaysmart!
I have one with over 300k when i sold it, and to this day boy still drives it! I regret every day selling that truck. Biggest mistake Ive ever made... Probably will never get it back either, but oh well you move on. And now ive got this one. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos on it !
i had an 85 camaro with the 2.8 mpfi v6. she went 250K and never burned oil between oil changes. I swapped over to a 350 TPI after the upper intake manifold gaskets went out on the 2.8
I had a '91 Sonoma with the 2.8 and a 5 speed, and it was surprisingly peppy...
the 2.8 was not bad for its day. My camaro wit the slush box 700r4 and 3.42 rear end could lite them up pretty easy. I could do a smokey burn out power-braking it also.
"Rattle Bomb Black" I'm going to start using that! Those 2.8 V6's were great engines, They're are virtually indestructable and make decent power after you desmog them, I'd just clean it up, fix the freeze plugs throw a cheap paint job on it and leave the 2.8 in and daily drive it, I don't even mind the wheels, They wouldn't be my 1st choice but they are already on, I'd just paint them the same color as the truck and use them or maybe paint them silver. I do like the idea of painting it white though, I think I would yank the cab and bed off media blast and repaint the frame silver as well. Magnet paint makes a really Chassis silver paint that's excellent.
Aw c'mon man! The first-gen S10 front clip looks awesome!
Thats an awesome find. The 2.8 with a 5 speed behind it was pretty quick.
Cool little truck, Jay. I wish you luck. Can't wait to see the progress on it.
That’s a good little truck . I’m glad it didn’t go to waste .i love those old trucks
That's a pretty tidy truck put a smile on my face when you turned the ignition and it didn't do all that bonging newer cars do like they're assuming we're all idiots who need reminding we're in a car....
I think it was suppose to have some sort of "chime" but it has long since stopped working. Wont hurt my feelings any though! Hate those stupid noises .
Glad you saved it. My Dad & I have been driving S-10's since 1982. Iron Dukes, 2.8's, 4.3's. His original 82 2.8 died at 200k. The metric 200 tranny had to be rebuilt 3 times. My 96 4.3 died at 281k. My current 85 Iron Duke has a little over 150k, his current 98 4.3 has 198k. Good, reliable, easy to work on trucks.
Wow! Even has racing floor mats! Awesome!!!
I had an 84 s10. Same 2.8 v6. It never failed to start. I like the 2.8v6. The engine out lasted the body unfortunately.
Mail men trucks use the 2.8 and s10 chassis
The red bed looks cool.
that truck don't look to bad. nice catch man
aaron garrison thanks man . I'm pretty excited
I had an 85 single cab short bed 2.5 that I spray painted black like that for 14 years, bought it for 1300 with 30k miles, looked practically brand new when I got it. Just sold it to my buddy with over 300k on it a few months ago and he's now daily driving it and using it for work. I'm now driving an 03 4.3 4x4 extended cab. S10s are little tanks especially the older ones.
Worked as a delivery driver for an auto parts store in high school. Delivery truck was '90 S10 5 speed with 2.5 FI 4 cyl. That li'l guy was quick--it would spin tire through 3rd gear...until the owner of the store rolled the truck one night driving home drunk...
Looks good jay looking forward to the video series on u fixing it up
I love this truck !
My first new truck was a 85.
got a 1985 s10 my dad bought it in 1986 still got it and planning on sanding her down and repaint and new interior
Same here. I just got my dad's '86. Probably just put a new seat and tailgate on it and get rid of some rust spots.
My dad's buddy had one of these with a 454 BB and a hurst slap shift in it. they had to beat in the firewall to make it fit and take out the carpet cuz the floor got too hot lmao. That truck was scary fast!
It'll buff out LOL. Really looks like a sold little body and you have some good ideas for it.
Cool truck. Looks to be in good shape.
Super cool! I've always liked the old Chevy trucks. I'd like to own one one day.
glad you saved her!!!! I love pre 86 square body s-10. The dash layout is so much nicer then the 86 and up garbage dash.
Nice 85 survivor. And welcome to the 2.hate club. Have an 84 Tahoe package s10.
Korium thanks buddy. This isn't my first s10 with the 2.terrible. but it won't be my last one either.
I like the color. Shows the American spirit. Covered with fade but not done for yet
nice truck can't wait to see it when its all finished
Nice truck 👍 , I have the 83 s10 auto with extended cab , I haven't had any problems out of mechanically, these trucks have a bowtie on them for a reason lol they mean business, with regular maintenance these are the absolute best vehicle for some reason 👍
nice s10 had a 1993 s10 with a 2.8 tbi and 5 speed was a fun little truck
80fordmustang6 I had a 93 Tahoe package myself! Extended cab 2.8 5 speed. Hellofa truckb
I always remember that truck as the one in Terminator 2, when it wouldn't go faster than a fully loaded semi chasing it.
You got that right. The 4.3 version was much faster
Great find! Can't wait to see how this truck turns out.
Good I hope !haha
My gpa has a 87 S10 and me and my dad are in the process of putting a SBC 383 stroker in it right now. We got the factory 2.8 ready to be pulled out today.
Hey, that's a nice score---well done. Fixing the freeze plug and leaving the 2.8 in there is the right call---I think you'll be surprised at how long that 2.8 will last. I had one of those (with the crappy Pontiac 2.5 four)---it had manual everything, including the steering. That seat on that truck is an S10 seat, but I think the original was red.
HEEEEYYY..IVE NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH THE 2.8!!..HAD TWO OF THEM ONE 5 SPEED AND AN 85 4SPEED .MOST RELIABLE S-10'S EVER!!!
I love classic chevys they are so cool
Love them S10s you def can't go wrong with them, but its def In need of that small block
Lookin forward for this series
I LOVE SCRAP YARD TOYS MY LAST WAS A DUNE BUGGY. NOW A 2000 BLAZER , WHAT FUN ON ON THIS ONE ONLY 149,00 MILES AND NO RIPS ON SEATS, PAINT OK .ENGINE AWSOME.
Be glad it has a carburetor. So much simpler, cheaper, and easier to deal with than having a computer and about a dozen sensors controlling everything. I yanked the stock EFI 2.8 out of my '93 S10 and put a carbureted 383 V8 in it. No emissions garbage at all.
I sold my 2003 Chevy S10 it had the 4.3 with a 5-speed it was fast though nothing would burn Rubber from here down the block if I wanted it too it was a short bed pretty red real sporty with bucket seats need that air condition to that is a must for me!
Hey my uncle just gave me a 1983 s10 just like this. It has v6 with 5 speed 2wd. Needs head gasket and water pump. Cant wait to get it running. My dream is to put a 283 in it tho! LoL..
Gotta love you a classic s10 run it till it dies then small block time man
Nice little truck
Lamans Waters which is exactly what I wanted
"2.8 liters of Chevrolet sadness" LOL
Bruin1010 I've owned these before. Not exactly impressive. But when they do run , well, they run.
It's cool little tlc
Jay Smart There's a lockout on the secondary valves in the carburator on the passenger side that is unlocked with the choke pulloff vacuum diaphrams. Over time these seem to get a lot of vacuum leaks and it won't unlock anymore. If you bend the end so it doesn't latch, it will disable it and unlock all the potential of the 2.8... which is sad indeed. Not bad for a free 5 minute fix though.
damn i love these 1st gen S10 trucks ,, I've owned 2 and still have my second one ,, it's a 1987 S10 tahoe 4x4 with the 2.8 liter V6 ,and has the B&W T5 5 speed ,,i just rebuilt the engine at 501,000 miles ,, i have barely 1000 miles on a serious performance rebuild , it now sports twin Garrett T3 50MM turbos
and breathes through a rochester 4 barrel throttle body capable of 500CFM ,,,not so much of a slouch as it used to be ,,still not a hotrod but i am getting 245HP at 4500 RPM and just shy of 320Lb/FT of torque at 2800
I made my first comment before i watched the whole video ,, personally i happen to like the 2.8 V6 ,, yes they were under-powered but they are also very durable and long lived even if tortured ,, as i can attest after 18 years of abusing mine it lasted 500K miles ,, i must say after having both an automatic and a 5 speed the 5 speed takes much better advantage of the 2.8's stock 130HP
damn you got a REAL BUY ,, $400 ,,i live in south western iowa ,, and that's a $1500 truck around where i live ,
it runs/drives , isn't rotted out and the freeze plug issue is easy to fix
My S10 is a king cab ,, it was originally gloss black ,,and i repainted it the original black when i had the body redone
it's a really beautiful truck now after having been a work truck for the last 17 years for me ,
just today i bought a set of Kenda Klever 285x75-16LT E tires for it ,, needs some bite to keep the rubber sticking to the road and to help it get through the mud
Nice truck I've got a 2003 s10 2.2 with a 5speed manual transmission there good little trucks and u can find there parts about anywhere for pretty reasonable good luck with it
I was never a big fan of the round body ones, but they seem to be decent trucks. However Ive had to replace tons of crap timing chains and head gaskets in those old 2.2s....
Great find Jay. I am a fan of S-10 s as well. Just a neat , durable truck. Years of dependability headed your way. I had a 2.8 before, great engine as far as I knew. But the better one was the 4.3 which is a descendent of the 350. Awesome engine. Still looking for the update on this ole girl. Looking
Nice catch
yes they do I actually own a Chevrolet celebrity 1985 with 2.8 with 2 barrel carburetor love that car I have videos of it on my channel the 2.8 engines are the best engines I've ever messed with or worked on easy work on and not to bad on parts well prices that it for parts but very hard to find but a friend of mine has a blue 92 model Chevy s10 with the 4.3 and had best friend in school had one that was white and had a bed cover on it and dual exhaust everything really nice truck had led headlights ran so good then one night a deer came on front of him and it totalled the truck
That's a nice save!! Just need a little love under the hood, that looks like a mess lol!!
Going to delete the smog and EGR along with most of that Vacuum line bullcrap.. Just retune the carb for the loss and she should be fine
Nice little truck. I had a 98 years back. Always liked them.
Im already over the moon with this one !
Oh boy! Thats a good looking truck! Good vid once aggain! :)
My truck has the auto 2.8 v6 and I pulled a 3500 pound car going the speed limit with no problems 😂 , these trucks are not weak , and my s10 is completely stock from 1983 lol
oh and my other s10 was a 5 speed as well 88 model so it had the throttle body injection, did some research and found a conversion kit so the carb will be going by by but i put a rebuilt carb on her till i get the money and time to upgrade. truckers called me the gray streak on I85 told me to back her down and saved me some tickets. hit a black bird with my wip antenna and yes i still have it and yes the top about a foot down it still bent. gotta love memories. lol
I had a truck just like that one but mine had a 2.5 4 cylinder engine with a 4 speed transmission. I love that truck
I had a 85 S10 I bought from the National Park Service Auction.. had 86,000+ miles on it.. it had a 2.8 throttle body injection.. it finally died at 288,000 miles
I miss my 85 S10. Body was in good shape. Had the 2.8 and gave me so much trouble. It burned a lot of oil and it constantly over heated. Bought it for $475.
👍 Nice old truck
That will make a nice little truck when you get in done another way I have found to check for problems with the heat gasket is check the radiator for oil in the water.
Awsome my first was 86 with 4 banger 4 speed manual bright red I wish I still had it.
My dad bought a manual 88' s10 and he kept it for a few years, then it was sabotaged (for personal reasons) it still drove for months. My dad fixed it, then gave it to my brother. He destroyed it. It currently sits alongside my house, and I'm hoping to get it back on the rode. For what it went through, s10's are dependable as hell.
Sweet truck . Everyone needs a little truck to get small jobs done
..nice introduction to your s10,..have one that smells of gas, and I have to pump it so many times to get it started@
Love iroc rim. Need a 350 an huger oranger paint lol
Really excited for this build
You and me both !
Nice find
Nice catch . can't wait to see the progress on this even if you don't get the 350 the 305 would be a big improvement
I actually like the 2.8 V6. They are reliable and easy to work on.
Those old S 10s are great trucks!! Obviously the best ones have the 4.3.
I love those square body short bed S10's. I've had 4 of them. I put V8's in the first 3 but the 89 that i have now has a good 4.3 with only 130k so i'm going to leave it alone for now. The truck is an auto with working AC and straight rust free body but needs paint and interior work. But i can't complain because i only paid $500 for it.
ki jay,i like it,do your thing and fix it up with a small block.good luck
Now I'm motivated to go work on my old 93 s10 blazer. I'm on my 2nd 93, sold the first one by mistake. Anyone thinking about getting into an older truck, I swear these old chevys are work horses. I have 259,000 on mine with the original 4.3 and trans. By the way I like the wheels, I'll trade you even for my 93 wheels with good tires all around.
What do your 93 wheels look like ! LoL I really dont like these irocs. But take that motivation and get it moving! Go fix her up!
91C4NVA k
Keep it & daily it then do it up good bit by bit. Keep up the great work.
J R I'm really excited to get this project started. Once the brake lights and a good thorough tune up is done I can start driving it. Then work a little on the body as I go.
Hey Jay, Mark here again. I had a 1969 Firebird in 1978. Since then in all my travels across the U.S. I have only seen 4 on the street. If you find one please do not scrape it. Camaros are a dime a dozen, 69 birds are super rare. Thanx for listening. Really like you channel. M
If I find one Ill hang on to it! Im a fellow firebird enthusiast. I have a 78!
Thanx bud. My bird was a triple green, auto with a transplanted 400cid Catalina engine with factory limited slip dif. with counsel. On a personal note it is hard making out with girls in the back seat. Years ago when I was young...
I love s10s I had a 98 round body 2wd with the 4.3, I miss that truck bad, i want to find another one
That's a sweet little truck, I'd love to have one myself. I'd run the 2.8 tell it blows too. Just started watching your channel, keep it up, you got a good channel.
Beautiful condition
going to be a good video series love the s10s hope to see a build progress on this truck . wish i lived closer to yall i love junk yards n getting to see wasteful people throw good stuff away would love to come work for yall if i was closer
We, we have all the staff we need right now but I appreciate the offer! And its alot of fun sometimes. But when the camera goes off there is still dirty work that has to be done. I just like to highlight the good fun stuff.
Awesome deal
I love the matte black paint. I know this guy at college that has one
nice catch, i found one for 350.00 plus title fees, figure when i get done ill put about a 1000.00 into it. yea i got the dreaded 2.8 as well but it runs well no smoke only thing ive got is they messed all the vacuum lines up so im trying to figure out how to get the vacuum advance to work correctly as well as the two diaphragms on the carburetor. i did find diagrams on line for vacuum system but im pulling what little hair out that i have lol. anyways maybe we can chat some time. had the tech four in the day brand new off the lot great little truck literally drove it all over the world and the states while in the military not one problem for 75000 miles then i sold it but thats another story.
shame it didnt have the 4.3 ... great engine
theprofreshonal gm still uses4.3 today with direct injection it makes 300hp
i have the 4.3 in my 85 el camino. with 200k miles, its still going strong. burns oil like crazy, but still amazing.
Yeah I've got a 2003 with the 4.3, thing has got some serious torque and tough as nails
The 4.3 was one of the best motors, we had a 1986 S10 that had over 300,00 on the original motor
I'm getting a 1982 S10 with an engine that's not the 2.8. I think it's the 4.3 Vortec V6 but I'm not sure.
looks great for its age!
damn that started fast
I have a '92 S10. 4.3, 700R4, 4x4, single cab, long bed. Great truck. Got it for $1000 and put about $800 into it to make it road worthy. It has about 120k miles on it. Speedo and odometer stopped working. Cant find the correct module and really dont much care anymore lol. I use it to haul scrap metal and other odd hauling jobs. It's name is Fred.
Have you tried a local pull a part yard? Or Maybe rock auto? These are awesome little trucks to have around!
Yeah, I tried. They are specific to tire size, gear ratio, 2wd or 4wd, and cable or sensor driven speedo. Apparently I have a rare tire size and gear ratio combination. 3.42 with 235/75/15 (29in). I checked out several yards with no luck. The module is also a bitch to get to. Yeah, it's a great little truck. Maybe in a few years I'll do a LS and SAS.
It's never been wrecked so it's pretty straight. I did have to replace the fenders, cab corners, and tailgate because of rust. The bed isnt that bad actually, just a little near the tires. The frame has some rust but not really anything concerning.
Jay I had a 89 s10 blazer but mine had a 4.3 v6 baby miss that thing
Wow this looks immaculate compared to my dads '86 S10. Luckily I got it running with a new fuel pump and tank, after it sat for the past five years
2.8 is reliable will never die. mine has over 200,000 but i have an 88 so fuel injected. who needs power when you get 24mpg on the hwy. thats great for an 80's truck
I can't wait to see how that white on black will look.
Were trying to finish up the rustang and the GT first, Soon this will get its day in the sun! Stay tuned
nice truck
First before you start doing work and spending money on it I would make very sure the frame, bottom of the cab, and other structural areas are not rusted out. I have a 1993 S10, the last year of the square bodies. It has that grille you are talking about, but I want the older style grille. I discovered the radiator support would have to be replaced to make it fit, and both fenders would have to come off to replace it. I don't believe it has ever been apart, so I just live with it. The biggest issue I have with it is the EFI. I would kill to have a carburetor. The whole engine is controlled by a computer, and I don't believe in mixing computers and cars. It's also loaded with smog crap, which I can't remove, because it has to have a smog test every 2 years. You are very lucky if you don't have to deal with that BS. It also has a 2.8, but with a manual 5 speed
i once had an s10, it was one of my shortest owned cars
Thank you.... Thank u so much. I hate seeing them in the yards. People really make me sick. When someone on Craigslist would gladly give you $1,000 for that and the junkyard would barely give you $150 why the hell would you junk it. Another saved thank god
Always been a fan of square body s10 trucks . I've had several. Actually had an 85 with a v8 305 swap. I have one now . Don't know how to post a pic of it. It's a 91 2.5 iron duke 5 speed . Love it .
That is an awesome find. Would have been nice if GM had of offered them in different configurations that came equipped with a 350 already.
Yea but thats sorta half the fun. IF chevy had made them ready for v8s, they would have been larger, bulkier, and pricier trucks. The fact they are so small, agile, and compact is the whole point of the swap! Big motor+ little truck= alot of fun!
Jay Smart Well lets not forget about cyclone they also had the blazer version typhoon 4.3 with a supercharger they were faster than a stock 350 small block
Nice little truck Jay! Good luck with it. I think it looks great as is. Fix water leak, dash cover, rhino line bed, maybe a tonneau cover , and while I like the rims, I think chrome ones would look better, and just drive it. A small block 350 would be hell on rear tires and trying to keep it straight on the road! I'll take an "Iron Duke 4" and a 5 speed stick !
Love those old iron dukes! had about the same HP as a go kart, and it feared nothing!
paint looks good
DAMN this thing is mint
Cool small block that truck will last many moons
