Oni is a third-person action video game developed by Bungie West, a division of Bungie. Released in 2001, it was Bungie West's only game. Gameplay consists of third-person shooting with hand-to-hand combat, with a focus on the latter. Originally planned just for the Mac OS and Windows, a PlayStation 2 port was concurrently developed by Rockstar Canada. The game's style was largely inspired by Ghost in the Shell and Akira and shares the same genre, being set in a cyberpunk world.
There are ten different guns in Oni, including handguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and energy weapons. Power-ups such as "hyposprays", which heal damage, and cloaking devices, which render the player invisible, can be found scattered throughout the levels or on corpses. Since the player can carry only one weapon at a time and ammunition is scarce, hand-to-hand combat is the most effective and common means of defeating enemies. The player can punch, kick, and throw enemies; progressing into later levels unlocks stronger moves and combos.
There are multiple classes of enemy, each with its own style of unarmed combat. Each class is subdivided into tiers of increasing strength. As in Bungie's earlier Marathon titles, tiers are color-coded, in this case by green (weakest), blue, and red (strongest). Also color-coded are the levels of health each opponent has, indicated by a flash when the player strikes or shoots them. Green flashes show the opponent has high health, red flashes show the enemy is near death.
Oni does not confine the player to fighting small groups of enemies in small arenas; each area is fully open to explore. The fourteen levels are of various sizes, some large enough to comprise an entire building. Bungie hired two architects to design the buildings.
The Oni engine implements a method of interpolation that tweens key frames, smoothing out the animation of complex martial-arts moves. However, frame slippage is a common problem when multiple non-player characters near the player are attacking.

But then Rockstar Games bought them outright, the game was cancelled, made them Rockstar San Diego, then, if the information I've come across is correct, the tech Angel Studios used for Oni 2 contributed to the creation of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) that powered Grand Theft Auto IV & subsequent Rockstar games.

And if you fall off a jump that was supposed to kill you, you end up in a limbo of pure darkness with the suggestion of lighting. Also fun fact, in the level where you fight the big dude that comes back up with the jetpack if you knock him off the building, you can jump off the building, run back up, all the enemies respawn, but when you make it to the roof again, the game reads it as if you won the fight. I don't know if that's a programming error, or a joke by the devs who put the cheat in the first place.

AgentRedemption They really didn't sellout to Microsoft. Bungie was a company that wanted to stay alive and make games, the only way to do that was through Microsoft.
Selling out doesn't mean making a bad deal or doing something for money. Selling out is when you give up a passion or something you believed in, only for greed or personal gain.
They actually did the opposite of seeking out because when Microsft asked them to make more games, they refused. Microsoft wanted them to make a Halo game every year like call of duty. They also wanted them to make a bunch of spin off games. They didn't even want to make Halo 3 odst or Halo reach, but they had no choice to due to contract. So they did that, then they bought themselves out of their contract and left to make Destiny. They would've made Destiny with Microsoft, but Microsoft refused. So they jumped ship.
Say what you will about Bungie, but they are not sellouts. When given the opportunity, they follow their passions. These guys created one of the biggest video game franchises of all time and then walked away from it. How can you call them sellouts for that?

And it's hard not because of bad design, but because of finely crafted, souls-like combat mechanics that are difficult to master and have a sharp learning curve.

I still remember the story to this day and it has stayed with me for years. The Marathon trilogy has one of the best stories i have ever experienced in an FPS game and has kept me guessing ever since i finished the games.
Durandal was a real bastard and I felt sad for Leela in the end, since you don't interact with her after the first game and you find out in Marathon 2, that she was left to rot in the Phor homeworld.
To put it in Durandal's words: "Poor Leela, she deserved better".
Erc0re is right, the Marathon trilogy deserves an episode. If it weren't for those games, Oni and Halo wouldn't exist since the Marathon games ended up putting Bungie on the map and making them famous.
I still remember that the manual of the first Marathon game had a message from Bungie on one of the pages, asking the users to not pirate the game, since a lot of work and effort had gone into creating it and that if they didn't get to make any money from it, they would shut their doors and no more games would be made.

The chrysalis part where she fell into the acid and all her external parts were replaced by the chrysalis was a fan favourite. Fuck this game was also challenging at times as well.
EDIT: A few years later we received the holy grail of PS2 games - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, a true triumph. If you don't agree, then fuck your couch.

For the time, those animations are really, really good. Hell, they're pretty damn good by modern standards. Just look at the way the movement animations transition so smoothly - there are plenty of big budget modern games who don't manage this.

By the way in 2022 there is still has active modding community.
It has unrivalled combat system with minimum required keys. (crouch, jump, left and right clicks, shift and wsad)
Only things missing in combat system is escape from graps and active block/parry system. But this can be countered by marvelous evade system.

So glad someone else mentioned Marathon!
1:20 - Actually the Marketing stuff is a result of Bungie dressing the character up and the Publisher making the character naked. If I recall.
And the game itself was inspired by 1995's Ghost in the Shell far more than just general anime.
    2:00 - *She's not.. an Android.*
And Kusanagi isn't an Android either but that's a more philosophical discussion.
But in short, Kusanagi is a Cyborg and Konoko is ( *SPOILER* ) spliced.
7:12 - I love the Airport Theme that starts with the slings and then goes forward.
I like the soundtrack. Plenty of good songs.
7:49 - Just stand still. It's simple as fmuck.
8:40 - I never had any problems with the combos. It's what made the game fun.
But I will agree that the special moves like Double Spinning Kick had a finnicky timing.
9:25 - You didn't react fast enough. You should had slid.
9:40 - Again, double spinning kick clears all enemies in your vicinity.
Aside from that. You can pick in 8 different directions. You have enough moves.
9:54 - That's a lie or just plain wrong. I've run past enemies and I've seen others do it as well.
10:20 - I think that's incorrect. Healing and Ammo carries over but not weapons. If I recall.
I could be wrong though but I certainly remember it doing so.
11:00 - I love the level design. Wtf are you talking about?
Not everything needs to be a tight maze of convoluted shit.
11:56 - As far as I am concerned. It's no different than compared to the good ol' days when we collected keys.
Except Keys were far more annoying since they could be hidden away in some bullshit secret wall or something.
14:06 - I think it's amazing. I think it's fantastic and extremely responsive for the most part.
With good music, good level design, and a lot of entertainment for the hours you'll spend with it.
Final - Overall I found this review to be rather disappointing but it's what I expected by now.
As well as things just being blatantly wrong - She's not an Android.

I remember hearing about this game when it was in development for the MAC! I remember an issue of MacAddict magazine with Oni on the front, but I forget if they included a demo on the disc that month or if it was just a written preview. I remember Halo was originally planned as a Mac game too.

If you ask me it should've got remade or a sequel, the game looks very interesting and the gameplay got potential if they tweaked it a bit more. I don't think it's a good idea to completely abandon it but what can you do.

FIRST GAME I EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE. I still remember as a child who did not even know how to use a computer back then I played this game. What I did was press anything on the keyboard and move around and then I was stuck how to open the tutorial door. I proceeded to run my hand through the keyboard until I got the keybind to use the door to open it. I ran back down to my family screaming in joy like I had achieved a great thing in my life. Halo was also my first FPS game also on PC. My uncle bought PC games on pirate for his PC and let me play on it after he was done as I did not even know how to turn on the PC on my own.
