6.4 and 6.7 powerstrokes have positive crank case pressure there will always be steam coming out of the oil fill and vent
Glad you were able help fix it. Iâm sure he really appreciated it. Not everyone has shop like yours.
Ford tech here. A bit of smoke out of the oil cap is normal, your friends 6.7 seemed more smokey than normal though. Just as long as there is not positive or negative pressure when you put your hand on it. Will be a bit hard to tell since he has a CCV reroute. If youâre concerned about the compression, have the dealership do a relative compression test on IDS. The 6R140 trans in the 6.7 is stout as fuck, too. Itâll take a beating. He must have a 11-14, because he has the twin scroll/dual boost turbo. Theyâre not bad turbos, but definitely not like the 15+ turbo that went back to a 6.0/Duramax style. You can actually retrofit the 2015+ 6.7 turbos using all factory parts.
Thanks for that info! It's got a 64.5 smeding non-vgt turbo on it actually, so I won't have to worry about the typical 11-14 turbo issues!
Probably with the 6.7 is that freaking cp4 pump
Also the 6.7 powerstroke is so bulletproof it never gets blowby
the trans is stout but not in the stock config. the valve body needs work and also the stock 11-14 turbos are garbage if you dont delete on day one because it will eat the bearings in the turbo. ask me how i know. i lost my exhaust wheel on a mild acceleration pull. it shot out into a corn field... as far as the blow by vapor mine has done it from day one and have done plenty of testing to see if there were issues with the rings or a broken ring land and everything comes back fine. my engine is about to get pulled to fix the cam gear issue because of my power level right now. i dont want the gear spinning on the cam and fixing the horribly designed double oil pan leak.
@@nmjm31 my truck is your twin except i have the tan interior panels instead of the darker gray or black. i have the 64.5 also and love it. my truck has the same amount of blow by vapor and i beat on my truck every time i drive it so id say your fine i also run high boost pressure with the turbo. probably around 50-60 psi so from what i see from the video is normal for me but thats just my two cents on it from experience on beating the dog crap out of my engine.
Power strokes all have a little blow by!!! Run that baby like you stole it! $27k is damn good for a king Ranch! Very clean truck
Thanks! So far, I love it. After Josh took care of all the boost leaks, it's running perfectly.
I paid $32K for a 2012 F350 Lariat Super Duty, 6.7 Powerstroke, 4 door, 8 ft box, 4x4, not a dually. I added a block heater and air bags. Was at 169K miles. Now 176K miles. I like it. Twice the horsepower over my 1995 F350 7.3 Powerstroke, 4x4 dually.
The âsmokeâ out of the oil cap is somewhat normal on these 6.7. Mine was doing it brand new, my friend bought his new as well and I asked him to check his at 5k miles and it was doing the same thing. What you donât want is pressure in the oil cap. It it pops then you have an issue
Hope it has the heated tailgate! Wouldnât want him to get frostbite pushing it home this winter.
Could say the same about your truck too đ everything breaks sometime
@@nmjm31 I agree! All the trucks break. Good decision to buy a Ford! They are good!
@Ron France I dont think he will get frostbite from pushing the truck. But i doubt that it will break because they are reliable.
HAHAHHAHAHAHđđđ
đ
Josh, everyone i know with a diesel truck carries. i was thinking he is missing 1 piece on that truck! then you showed it! nice job with the fix on it. check the ccv areas for that blow bye. Keep Rollin!
Iâve enjoyed watching and learning about diesels from your channel. Nice to see you working on and showcasing PSD on your channel đ
Literally down the road from you and if youâre ever up for changing glow plugs in a 7.3L PSD, hit me up đđŒđ€
Keep up the great work, Josh.
I build cummins, from 300hp-1500hp when I set my ring gap on higher Hp trucks I set them lose and I always get fumes/vapor. Itâs nothing to worry about. The only time you need to worry is when you are getting actual pressure out.
I've come to the conclusion that with trucks made after 2000, it's really a matter of choosing which set of issues you want to deal with. They all have some major upsides. They all have their downsides. But which set of downsides vs the upsides do you want to deal with?
You are soooo right!
When it comes to half tons buy a fuckin Tundra and no worries! 2nd generation go 300k with little to no issues!
Even pre 2000s have issues mainly rust and ride quality
â@@fredwilliams7893 as long as it's newer then 2007 and never a 2012
Could still argue that about a 6.9 vs 7.3 idi for example. Either the studs need reinforcing and you don't have overdrive, or you need to do serious work to get rid of the cavitation issue.
Ultimately could have a sweet ride in any case, but no truck is truly perfect. Definitely would love an all mechanical truck eventually though.
I have a 2014 with the retrofit turbo and HPFP. 566 to the tires!!! Love the KR interior!
Very common a freshly rebuilt engine to have blow by until the piston rings seat. See it all the time on rebuilds especially diesels
my LB7 was like that after it rebuilt
Thanks for that input Tyler! Definitely helping to put my mind at ease about it.
Compared to a 6.4 powerstroke thatâs hardly any blow by đ Iâve seen 6.4 trucks with brand new ford long blocks with excessive blow by. Just depends on what ring end gap the shop set the piston rings to when they rebuilt your 6.7
@@nmjm31 yea weâll keep us all posted! Good luck man nice truck!
I have a 2016 6.7 and it huffs out the oil fill too but with no pressure behind it. Been told itâs normal. Keep us updated
Itâs normal. Now if the pressure is blowing the cap off thatâs bad. Everyone freaks out when they see a little smoke
Heard on the video for sure. That 6.7 is miles a better motor than the 6.4 and 6 liter are. But, I still love my 6.6. No need to change it.
First time I rode in a 6.7, I was blown away by the acceleration. 7 people loaded up in the truck on a pool trip. The owner let it RIP, and I couldn't believe the stark difference to my dad's dog-slow 6.0.
Ya my buddy had a 13 I talked him into a true full 4" from the turbo back with a mild tune that thing moved for a truck
And the 6 oh was a big improvement over the 7.3.
Josh you are the man to figure it out. Love to see you helping other people. That's what we all should do. Man I am waiting on WIFEMAX!!! Like a kid in a candy shop. đđ
I bought a 2007 LBZ last spring, boy did i get screwed, someone was in it before me that had no clue what they were doing. So here i am after doing injectors, cp3, turbo rebuild, headgaskets, water pump, and a harmonic balancer later. Sucks that i had to blow through over 10k. No one should ever have to do that. Really made me want to get out of a diesel.
I just did basically the same rebuild after a stealth turbo blew up in mine. You not joking about the cost lol
My old 2015 6.7 would push vapors out of the oil fill, but no pressure. From all the research I did, it was a normal thing. I can't remember if it was to that extent or not, but I wouldn't be to concerned. Just keep an eye on it
Agreed
Who has a mechanic as a friend and doesn't take them with when they go and buy a new vehicle?!?
You are good friend ,help the other came from God, God bless you, today just fixing my duramax lb7 put a new fuell filter keep on shep thank you Bady
I had a ccv reroute and had blow by. I then put the stock ccv filter on an the blow by went away. Itâs because when the ccv hose is routed into into the turbo it pulls a vacuum on the crank case so when people do a reroute there isnât negative pressure and therefore creates blow by.
I've seen on a similar style air intake system where you reroute the ccv system through an aftermarket ccv where a incorrect bolt had been put in and wasn't allowing crank case pressure through and was causing excessive pressure through the cap.now that style of ccv was a type of air oil separated and was too far down causing it too stay closed.now you might have a different style of aftermarket ccv however I'd make sure it venting correctly and allowing enough pressure through and not restricting.aftermarket parts can be hit or miss, even if it is venting it may not be enough.
If the blow by isnât lifting up the oil cap I wouldnât worry about it.
Work it hard for break in! Nothing worse than babying the truck right after a rebuild. I was told by my Dad that a customer once brought in a 11 liter cummins less than 100
hours after a rebuild with loads of blow by. They took it for a road test and hooked it on to a heavy trailer and gave it all she had and came back. When they checked for blow by after it was gone.
Love the Trigicon Night sights on the 9mm đ not a Sig for sure passes for G19 đ .a surprise in every vid you post !!!
Minute 9:00, spray bottle with water and some dawn dish soap in it. Not sure if it would affect anything but thatâs what we use on dive boats to find leaks in our compressors, bailout tanks, etc. just look for any large bubbles. Saves time rather than trying to feel where the air is coming from.
Iâm not a mechanic so not sure if that would be all that helpful but just thought Iâd share. Cool truck
Josh if the oil has coolant in it sometimes that can thin the oil causing the blow by or a cheap break in oil take a look at the oil from the pan if there are shavings also if the piston rings were not clocked right blow by can happen or whatever cylinder it was that had the injector tip issue wasnât sleeved just reboared and a stock replacement piston and rings were put in on drag racing engines after a number of times where the rings are not touching the cylinder wall a bigger piston and rings get put in
My 2018 smoke out the oil fill as well. No pressure behind it. Was told if there are pressure to replace the crank case filter.
I've had multiple 6.7 trucks in at my work as we work on a large fleet of f450 trucks. There's been a few trucks with the crank case filter clogging and causing excessive pressure but that's a simple fix. Just had to replace the filter. There's been a few deleted trucks in with the ccv reroute and I'm not a fan of the reroute kits. They've all smoked like that and it just doesn't seem like a good kit to me. On my 2013 f250 6.7 I left the factory ccv housing on.
Thanks for that insight
Blow by could be from the ccv re route depending on how itâs re routed. Needs to be routed into atmosphere towards the rear of truck.
Needs to be routed back to the intake to relieve crank case pressure and prevent blowing out seals
I always put my oil cap on upside down while it's running if it doesn't immediately blow it off I'm not too worried There's always a little bit of blow by on every vehicle. Plus it looks like it's pretty cold out so it looks worse than what it is.
My 6.4 was that way. They were notorious for the gases coming out but never did it blow the oil cap off. Always a worry with them.
You guys are right. They are all awesome. The most fun I have ever had driving & Iâve owned some fun vehicles to drive. Iâd certainly sooner drive a diesel truck any day over a 4 banger or EVđ
Make sure the reroute hose isnât pinched if u have blow bye with a reroute check to see if u have anything coming out the hose under the drives side
Soapy water in a spray bottle would help you out when checking for boost leaks
The smoke from the oil is normal but when it blows it off thats when you gotta start getting ready for it
I just put a new motor in my lml and it does not have any smoke or steam coming out of the oil fill or dip stick tube like his does. It also didnât have any smoke or anything close to that before the original motor blew. That would definitely worry me
Iâve seen the turbo kit he has in action before the non vgt turbo sounds great slightly laggy but hauls the mail compared to factory
I just bought a 15 PS. Also light smoke out of oil cap. I was told itâs definitely normal with these trucks.
I came from a fully stock 2018 cummins Night and freakin day from the cummins. But my PS is completely taken care of and tuned Maybe itâs cause the cummins wasnât deleted. But I donât think Iâd go back to a cummins after driving a 6.7 PS. Truck is insanely fast
fresh built diesels will inevitably have blow by until the rings seat themselves and get a working groove in and seal completly. not to mention that amount of blowby is normal for ANY diesel with a CCV that vents to atmosphere. i'm assuming its got a CCV that vents to atmosphere. if it had a CCV. that was piped into the turbo like factory. then it'd definatly be cause for concern
Josh, your friend should have taken you along to look at truck before he brought it đ€
We had this same noise on a tractor trailer truck it was a loose clamp on a rubber hose coming off the turbo
That does t seem out of the ordinary for these 6.7 trucks. My old work truck was a 2012 and it had that much blow by off the lot. Sold the truck with 270k and no issues. I also have a 2012 6.7 and they have crank case pressure thatâs a little more then most diesels. I wouldnât be concerned.
Thank you for that perspective! Definitely helping me to put my mind at ease about it.
Certified ford diesel tech here, The vapors are normal especially when itâs cold out itâs more noticeable my 6.7s has been that way for years also after a fresh oil change but Make sure thereâs no kinks/ restrictions in the ccv reroute.
Thanks for that Justin. That gives me some peace of mind. I'll definitely check that.
Ccv hose is kinked. Cut the hose short and let it vent to the atmosphere. Route it over the brake booster and down beside the shock. Avoid a catch can in really cold temps. Condensation freezes and will cause increased crank case pressure and puke oil through the turbo and out the exhaust. Make you think the motor blew.
I have a 15 King Ranch Iâve spent some money on. Learning things the hard way. Iâve learned quite a bit over the 2.5 yrs Iâve owned mine. Bought it with 75k miles, it now has 113k miles. Catastrophic fuel system failure at 85k led to a bunch of new parts.
6.7âs are absolutely bulletproof. Chevy guys hate on them but the hate is beyond misplaced.
Facts
Always great to have a buddy extra set of eyes and ears when troubleshooting
My wife commented that the boost leak sounded like a sad ballon ( letting the air out by hand to make it squeal) đđ. No offense to Ford , or Ford owners , but their latest offerings arenât â Better Ideasâ in my opinion . Give me a mid 1970âs Ford F-250 4x4 any day over a new one . And Iâm a G.M. guy âŠâŠ. Love my Non Emission 2002 LB-7 2500 GMC Sierra âŠđ Glad you found the leak on your Buddyâs truck , as ANY leakage causes issues , especially with all the sensors & interplay between ECMâs & components.
I have a 96 7.3 600,000 plus an 01 with 400,000 plus and now a 14 6.7 with 230,000
Soapy water in spray bottle is good for finding boost leaks. My 2011 6.7 with 160k miles doesn't have any blue by yet. There are metal shavings in my fuel filter though, so my high pressure pump is probably gonna fail.
On a fresh inframe on a semi truck you get a lot of blow by until the motor is broke in maybe the 6.7 is the same way
Purchased my 2011 king ranch psd with 219k it has oil vapor similar maybe a lil less. Been to the floor more times then I can count and it doesn't care at all. Truck has 242k now still loves the abuse
Gotta love when people slap on "super duper race performance" parts but leave massive boost leaks everywhere
Make sure the hose on the crankcase reroute isn't kinked. That engine should not smoke like that if the reroute is installed correctly and the hose is not kinked.
Thanks for the info we will check that
It will if the piston rings havenât seated properly yet he said itâs a new rebuild and itâs pretty common for them to smoke too đ
I had to brand jump. I wanted another Ford but they haven't been able to build a decent one since the 7.3. Did some research and was able to pick up an LBZ with under 100,000 miles in the Southwest no rust for 29 plus taxes and fees. It took me two and a half months and had to travel close to 300 miles so I hope I made a good purchase
300 miles like itâs a lot lol, none drivers talking about miles is always worth a laugh
When doing a break in thatâs the time to get on it so the ring's seat. You shouldn't take it easy and let it idle for extended periods of time like in the video.
We are ALL overpaying for new or used, me included! My 2012 KR F350 DRW Had 28,800 miles on it and I gave $50k for it 5/22. Same colors. Love it, so worth it to me, it did have everything and some extras. Private party, owned by an airline pilot, garaged, looks new, everything aok so far, now with 30k miles. If I keep it 20 years the price really won't matter much. New one is 95k, so.... yeah it's all relative. 50k was below black wholesale. Pilot went and bought a f450 Platinum for $105k, so were all paying bigger bucks than just a few years back.
Great job the new stanadyne s&s pump is a game changer for these trucks
That blow by is not an issue. Unscrew the cap and set it on the hole if it doesnât blow the cap off itâs fine. Your going to have some crank case gasses on a diesel.
Mine was the exhaust manifold bolts. The gasket was like a blade of grass between your fingers and would make that sound.
I'm not a Powerstroke guy but one of my 6.7 Cummins has a small amount of vapor with no pressure, no issues with it so far. I think some motors just do it.
Check the ccv. If itâs re-routed, put it back to stock with a new filter and see if it still pushes blow by out the oil fill and dipstick.
Do not do this lol that isnât how that works
I don't think my 2011 has the filter, as his might not also.
I have the same exact truck. Bought it from a friend who put a brand new Ford long block in it. Had 150k on the chassis when I bought it and like 200 miles on the engine. Iâve had it 2.5 years only maybe 15k miles on it but itâs had zero issues. Itâs deleted but I donât hot rod it at all.
I rebuild diesel engines. Give it some time for rings to seat before condemming it.
Thatâs a good friend you have. I drive tractor trailer for a living. This is all normal.
Soapy water is an easy way to check for and locate boost leaks, or any kind of gas naan.
Should open up a shop, truck master diesel!! 27k too much for the truck. Just my thoughts!! Love the content!!
That was a good video, but I sure would like to see you use the Cummings more
Hello Josh. Your friend got a new Ford F250 Powerstroke 6.7 is sounding good. You can solve the problem.
I learned how to drive a towed vehicle by my dad before I had a license.
Michigan born and raised.
Thereâs something about the 6.7 they always seem to have blow by everyone Iâve ever seen. Itâs just like that I would not worry about it.
They have a positive pressure block. Thatâs why they have crack case filter. Do the bypass on it like I did. Mines a 2019
A breather oil cap helps this. Relief of all the positive crank case pressure w the junk ccv the 6.7s have. Mine was clogged and started to cause some smoke until I put the billet breather oil cap from UPR on. Totally recommend
Ccv reroute isnât leaching the pressure out of the case enough.
Put back to stock or put a new/better reroute kit on
27 is about right for that truck.
It appears pretty clean with a fresh reman .
Mine was nearly same price and not a KR but lariat about 180k miles one owner and stock
Got my 2012 for 25 with 170k lariat with 6âBDS lift and 20â wheels 37â tires
@@braydonpayeur1366 pretty recently? Thatâs a really good price
check the vacuum pump and lines..... I know on my cummins if theres a vacuum leak it causes what looks like bad blow by
Thanks Brandon
I did the ccv re route on my 17, no blowby under normal driving but it does have about what u have with my 21k camper behind It
i have that excact same truck mine is 2012 107k mint condition! i love mine get comments aLL THE TIME
most of the newer 6.7âs have âblow byâ. i thereâs plenty of videos up on it. and i am a ford diesel tech and see alot of it
Great channel brother!
Hey Josh good test and a good job.
My boss had the same issue with his he had a lot of blow by on his number 3 cylinder long story short they had to tear the whole engine down and rebuild it Wait till it starts smoking out of the exhaust then it's time you can baby it for a while
Can you post up a link to the boost pressure gauge setup you used? Iâd like to check my truck for leaks.
Glow plugs werenât the issues with the early trucks. It dropped a valve and took the glow plug tip off.
all the boost leaks I can only wonder about the top end of the engine what's loose lol
Fresh motor new ringd. Little blow by. Is normal. Give it a few thousand miles. Then rings should seat. If it blows cap off. You have issues.
They have a positive pressure block. Thatâs why they have crack case filter. Do the bypass on it like I did. Mines a 2019
Did you route yours to atmosphere or vent into exhaust?? 2018 Plati 6.7. Thx
@@paul91103 atmosphere, have a hose that runs to back axel area
If its a new motor in that truck the rings are probably not seated yet thats probably why it has a little blow-by.
Hey I'm thinking about getting a power stroke 6.7. My budget's going to have to allow me over 100,000 miles I'm leaning towards upwards of 2015 I'd like your opinion on that also I'd like to know how this truck is holding up that you purchased in the video with the new engine
Best ford engine was the 7.3 still got one on the road with over 500 thousand with the original engine. LBZ to me was the best engine Chevy put out
I do agree the 7.3 is legendary
My 02 has 400k my 97 has just 250k
100% the 7.3 is the best diesel engine
agree, unfortuanely the 7.3 is a dawg and can't pull much weight. Well, that is if you want to go over 35 mph.
Did you mean best âinternationalâ engine?đ
Check the ccv reroute hose make sure itâs not pinched.
The problem with a rebuild is and will always be the human factor. Who can you trust. Without knowing the shop and mechanic personally I would never risk it.
That sounds like my exhaust manifold/ up pipe leak, which I need to fix, since putting on ppe up pipes.
The engine is fine, the PCV system creates the smoke. See it on trucks all the time low miles
Looks and sounds great!
But I would change the crank case filter frist be for thanking anything bad
Thanks thatâs a good point
I hope that helps and I hope thatâs the problem or maybe just a break in thing but I have never seen that on a new 6.7 unless itâs the filter
Replace the crank case ventilation filter, they get clogged up
It sounds to me like a turbo manifold leak. I had the same issue on my VW several years ago and the metal gasket was leaking under boost because the stud nuts became loose.
Thatâs common on a 6.7. Just run it and itâll be just fine
2011 had issues with ceramic bearings in the turbo, bad ideal, and dropping valves in heads
Question!! I got the same smoke issues but donât feel pressure with hand but when I push the cap in without screwing it it pops out and I can catch it mid air is that bad lol?
