- Join me for a few beautiful, tranquil moments out in the spring woods.
It was very lovely to spend a few moments just standing, looking at the beautiful spring flowers, however I am conscious that many people are not so lucky to have access to this sort of thing, and might be craving connection with nature and the outside world.
So, please join me, virtually, just taking a quiet, close look at the flowers of an English wood in springtime.
Slow TV isn't for everyone, and that's OK - nothing is scripted here - no narration or music - nothing much happens, except by natural chance. There are no sudden loud noises in this video, mostly you will just hear bird song, the white noise of a gentle breeze through the branches, and occasional other natural sounds. You may also occasionally hear the faraway background of human activity, but don't think on that for now - just enjoy this peaceful moment amongst the flowers...
(This video was going to be 10 minutes of just Ramsons flowers, but as I wandered about the woods, a theme emerged)

I can’t think of a nicer sound than birdsong and running water.
I wake up everyday just before the birds start to sing. In our lives we are so busy we forget the beautiful things around us.
So true. I long for the days I can slow down, sit on my porch in the morning and just listen to the world wake up all around me!
@@waffles4714 literally me. Only 31 so have a long way to go ☹️🤣
This posted seconds after I had just closed another Atomic Shrimp video tab.. perfect timing.
Same
hi shrimp, my dad passed away 2 days ago and your videos have really been keeping me sane, he was very crafty and an outdoorsman like yourself, so in a lot of ways you remind me of him. thank you for doing all that you do, your content helps a lot of people in so many ways
I love the wild garlic season, my favourite part is the flower as that can be nice and spicey, great video very relaxing and peaceful.
Yay! Watching the Atomic Shrimp from England. Finally. Could someone here adopt me so that I don't have to go back?
A welcome dose of anti-anxiety, anti-brain-fog video, by my favorite nuclear crustacean. So lovely. Thank you Mike for the smile on my face.
So cathartic.
Listening to this on loop. Having a tough time. Thank you for this video.
The songs of the birds, especially the blackbird, is so calming. No one can convince me that he’s not a beautiful storyteller. I love this so much, especially because I’m bound to my bed for the most of the time. Thank you for the beautiful concert.
just what I needed at 4am to fall asleep to, thank you
It's 1:50 am now here, and I just saw this... But I don't want to fall asleep and miss anything! 😧
Oh, how lovely! The birds in my garden began to sing and whistle just as I walked outside with this playing! Intercontinental bird songs 🎶 🕊️
Thank you for evoking fond memories of spring bliss in Germany. i am living in a tropical paradise garden of my own making now, surrounded by colourful Bougainvilleas and Hibiscus and waterlilies of different hues. But nothing compares to discovering the first Snowdrop or frail Anemone after a long winter. Even as a child i would sit a long time watching those tender wonders. Not to speak of the charm cherry blossoms, blackthorn, hawthorn.... and i do miss gathering mushrooms, too! i am so grateful i can still enjoy such events by watching your videos. Warmest greetings from India💖Ma
I was hiking a lot in April and saw many of these plants myself. The time of the white flowers is very nice
Very calming, like relaxing with a purring kitten.
This was a lovely memory walk for me, thank you. I don't think I knew the names when I was a kid in Yorkshire, but I remember the flowers and the birdsong.
Just when I had the need for something relaxing on TV while I did a few chores, Atomic Shrimp comes a calling.
He's watching you
@@ferdinandkuhn6975 I choose to see that as oddly comforting.
I had the entirety of this up and nothing changed! I hadn't realised it was meant to change much haha. Time to watch again. 😁
Wow! These flowers are so beautiful! And the birds chirping in the background...this is what Heaven must be like 😊❤
Amazing video thanks so much 😊
Relaxing ❤
Really appreciating the birdsong. We used to get greenfinches and blue tits on our bird feeders, robins and blackbirds on the lawn. As our city has grown and with more residents cars and cats and buildings on every scrap of land that was once feeding and nesting grounds for the birds we no longer get them - just rats and sky rats feeding on rubbish. Very very sad situation
My cat, Pony, was absolutely fascinated by this video...and I kinda liked it too🥰
I made a lot of wild garlic dishes last week.
I'm a bit obsessed with bird songs at the moment and use the Merlin app every day when walking my dog.
On this video it heard robin, blackbird, wren, blackbird, great tit, chiffchaff, blackcap, Garden warbler, Chaffinch, Redstart, tree creeper, blue tit, jackdaw, pheasant, carrion crow, mistle thrush, goldfinch.
It's mostly accurate... Though this morning it said I had a Teal in my local park which due to the location, local geography and past observations is not likely so...pinch of salt. Also I sometimes hear and identify birds (like this morning, a song thrush) that it doesn't pick up straight away. But it's been a massive help to learn and revise the most commonly heard birds! I even set my location to PNW and identified birds on a Boring Old Guy* hiking video
*he's awesome, I love him
there's whoBIRD also
@@fontende I will download it and compare the two!
My bluebells are the opposite, all white and 1 blue.
Love the way the flowers go through phases of colours in the spring.
Slow TV - The Modern Day Equivalent To The "Interlude" Films of Yesteryear.
Just for fun whilst watching I used my birdsong app to identify the birds singing. It was an interesting exercise, I wasn’t sure how well it would work on a video recording but it did and you have a good range of birds there.
I love slow tv! thanks, Mr Shrimp
You can call him Mike
Fantastic. And so much to eat! :)
Oooo..., and PURPLE!!
Found some ramsons last week! They're amazing when fresh! It's like garlicky lettuce. I'm frankly surprised they don't have them in stores.
On average one in every 10.000 Bluebells are white. So you have a good chance of finding a few if you wander around woodland full of them here in the UK. :) Please bare in mind though, that it is illegal to pick wild Bluebells here in the UK.
This! I just needed this ^^
Watching at 2x speed to catch up
love wild garlic , great in mashed potato or as a pesto.
I found your channel a couple of days ago through the seed scame video that went semi-viral, and I really appreciate the variety of content you have on your channel and the way you approach making it. It's good stuff
Beautiful peaceful garden ❤
What a lovely spring day. Thank you for sharing.
The leafs from the first white flower are edible we call it snake's garlic we use it in salads or we cook it on stews and soups
Lovely 🙂
For me there just isn't any sight that compares to vegetation moving gently in the breeze! Thanks!
Lovin' it
Thank you Mike. Absolutely lovely video.
This is such a calming video & thanks Atomic shrimp 🦐😊👍
Like the Van Gogh painting!
I like the bit where you narrated over the video.
Can you do a video on trying those Japanese candy making kits and maybe try doing your version of a homemade one?
What's the latest time in the year you can find ramsons usually? Love the videos keep them coming
question, if you cut the stem of a white bluebell, does it have a kind of onion/chive like smell? i remember years ago we had what we thought were a white form of bluebell, but the stems had that strong smell when cut. i didnt have much access to the internet back then and never got around to inquiring about it.
Bluebells don't smell of onion. I think you may have encountered Three-cornered Leek (which was my nemesis in the previous garden)
@@AtomicShrimp ah! thats the one!!
I appreciated that relaxing interlude whilst having my lunch. Have you noticed the abundance of hedge garlic this year?
Yes. It seems to be doing very well. White deadnettle too.
Wild garlic.
Can you eat wild garlic flowers?
Yes, the whole plant is edible. The leaves are the best bit in my opinion, but the flowers make an interesting garnish
@AtomicShrimp Thank you! There's a load growing in a nearby woodland near where I live. The smell is wonderful, I may have to do some ethical foraging tomorrow when we take the pup for his walk. I got some lovely ribeye steaks from the butchers today for tomorrow's dinner. I'm quite sure the leaves will go well with the butter I plan on adding to them and the flowers will go nice in the salad.
Do people eat ramsons much in the UK?
I think for people who forage, the appearance of the wild garlic is one of the highlights of the calendar and they pick it a lot, but it's probably a fairly small proportion of the public that do that.
No three-cornered leek flowers? I guess you could always plant some.
NEVER. AGAIN.
@@AtomicShrimp You need to be more emphatic than that!
Daffty
Are they ransoms/ wild garlic?
Yes. The plants are all identified in the timestamps
Why is the odour of wild garlic stronger than its taste?
Are you asking for a scientific answer or just wanting to engage in conversation? Because I can help with the second one.
I suppose its down to the ratio of the various flavour/aroma compounds in the plant - sulphur compounds I believe - some of them are volatile and you smell them, others are less volatile so you only experience them when you taste them - this is only a guess, but I think maybe it has more of the volatile stuff and less of the other.
I'm not sure, if putting it like this makes sense. Our tongue only supplies the basic information about taste, namely sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Although apparently dedicated receptors for alkaline, metallic, watery and fatty are being looked for as well.
The finer nuances of taste come via the nose. Which is why food tends to taste bland and unexciting, when we have a stuffed nose or loose our sense of smell for some reason.
So whatever you smell when you pick the garlic, should still contribute to the 'taste' when you eat it.
Unless we're talking about cooking it first, as those finicky aromatic compounds might break down when exposed to heat.
That's as good as I can explain it - I'm not a chemist or anything.
@@AtomicShrimp theres an abundance in my area! And it seems to die off and re-emerge like a circular conveyor!! Unusual to have had it around for so long. Its growing slightly inland of a riverbank where the tide flood reaches. Cemaes Bay, Anglesey.
I watched the video and couldn't detect any aroma. What type of device are you using to watch?
Robin, blackbird, chaffinch, pheasant, chiffchaff, wren, blackcap, whitethroat, great tit, blue tit, long-tailed tit, willow warbler, carrion crow, possible goldcrest??
Thank you! 🐦
hello
Didn't actually watch the footage, sorry. After you carefully set up all those shots, made sure your lighting was good, the cards were in the camers, they have enough battery, editing the whole thing together.
The birdsong was so lovely that it became my whole attention; something we don't often hear in central London above the loud ambient noise.
speaking as someone in central Texas with invasive sparrows in her house vents (which can't legally be removed for some reason... I've asked so many companies).... the birdsong gets old after a while 😅 and so do the mites. :( We have to wait til the babies hatch and leave, then remove their horrid moldy nests and block the vents with chicken wire.... grrr
had to turn off was a bit too fast for me.
