Your comments about its the customers fault for not wanting to pay the Japanese rate are true. Same thing happened with the Malco eagle grip vice grips made in the USA. They where awesome vice grips. But they where more than the Chinese made vice grips. Unfortunately only after 2 years the factory closed.

I also bought the DTM52 18V multitool and a couple of sanders since then. Oh, and the HS006G from Japan last year to cut out my flooring. Next year, I'll finally be getting the XGT d-handle jigsaw.

Advertising = Consumption = $$$$. And over the years that has dropped off to a tiny end cap at one of our major tool chains and the other don't even carry them. Other companies constantly have their reps visiting these said stores as well which is something I haven't seen from Makita in ages. I heard that they canned the head honcho here in North America a few months ago so I am really hoping for change. Really hoping they come back to Supercross/Motocross. The sport is dominated by Japanese made bikes, seems legit.. plus my old Makita Suzuki hoodie is worn out.

Great analyzis of market economics 🤣👍 doesn't hurt to repeat.
You could always add more depth of course, why it's so expensive in some countries.
Often it's a huge part because of the over regulated and very overtaxed market in said country. It is what it is..
    Great video as always. ⭐️

    • @Servingsince
      @Servingsince Před 7 měsíci

Don't fall for the "over taxed" BS. Corps and share holders pay a lower tax rate than most workers because they fall under "capital gains" taxes. Capital gains max out at 20% in US. It is all about greed and how big of a boat can I buy. Profit margins are king and workers are just replaceable cogs that can be disposed of if they start to squeak. Same with "over regulation" Look up Love Canal and see why corps need regulation. Corps literally calculate if it is cheaper to break the rules and ignore safety standards vs actually trying to protect the water we drink, the air we breath, and the employees. Oh, it is 5 million fine but we make 8 million by ignoring the rule. Do it. Oh, we will have to pay out 5 million for a death, actuaries calculated there would only be one death per year but we make 10 million per year. Do it.

In the UK here, only Chinese-made tool I have is a DVC750L vacuum (underrated product, but wish, WISH it had a systainer compatible form-factor like Festool managed on one of their vacuums). All other tools, cordless router, circular saw, impact driver and drill are all made in Romania, and a random orbital sander is UK-made and very reasonably priced here, likely because it only had a 3-hour drive from the factory and no borders to deal with. There's possible a DMT52 multi-tool under the tree, will see if that's from somewhere else! Interestingly the LXT batteries are a mix of Singapore and Vietnam, the Vietnam ones were bundled with tools and Singapore ones were bought separately.

4:10 the 18V barrel grip is made in the UK and it is cheaper than the 40V China model. I think I have more non-China Makita tools than I have China made Makita tools. And barrel grip is superior, because you can cut upside down to avoid tearout.

i think makita plays everything safe, which is a good way to do things, because if you have any 18v battery you can run any 18v tool, where as i have milwaukee and while all of the tools in the m18 range run on m18 batteries some of them dont perform unless they have a high out put battery, which for someone who is new or hasnt learnt this yet can make you end up buying a tool only to realise you now need another newer more expensive battery even though it is meant to be all on the same platform, while this also is good because you can still put a smaller battery on to complete something quickly and get away with it, makita has stuck to never misleading their customers in that sense, however then some tools needing two batteries really is a downfall because two is now one etc etc, you need two you need to have two charged for when they die you need to be charging two etc, and in most cases milwaukee single battery tools can outperform makitas 2 battery tools not to say they are better tools but performance wise most cases they are, then makita has the old 36 volt batteries and now the 40v range, i understand that this is not a milwaukee vs makita video but when you condsider the fact that a company keeps changing their platforms which forces people to not know whether they can trust a platform or have to change platforms costs a lot of money for the customers, seems like no tool company is perfect no matter which platform you go with something will happen or it will have its downfalls. just invest in what you think is best for you. personally i like milwaukee as they provide specific tools for my trade and the performance is exceptional. i like makita but i can never justify swithching to them because they lack certain tools and i would want both lxt and xgt but i can't justify having to invest in both platforms that are not interchangable. basically this comment has nothing to do with this video but i just felt it was relevant somehow lol.

1:50, couldn’t agree more. For decades, we’ve become used to electrical items becoming cheaper and better, every time we replace one. Now, we’ve got what we wanted. Funny thing tho: fixing them takes just as long as it ever did, meaning labour cost of repair is way higher than labour cost of production here in NZ, for a tool made in China. Right to repair has to be balanced with the right of a repairer to make a living…

Makita tools should be THE tools of anyone who claims to believe in Right to Repair laws. It is quite brilliant actually how repairable they are.
Deandohertygreaser is an Irish rapiar technician who praises Makita often and absolutely loathes working on Milwaukee tools.
Makita do make duds to be sure, but they are either easily repaired or they are duds because they are third party manufacturers who license the Makita name, which Makita is getting away from slowly but surely.
I can personally attest to how easy the tools are to repair, it's a joy to get something working again for a only $10-20.

If you need bigger batteries have a 2nd one, now there is deal for €80 you get 2 pack 4Ah batteries , 5Ah are less than €60 and 6Ah under €80 each.
What does one 12 Ah battery cost again, same as 3 sets of 2 pack 4Ah Makita , twice as much Ah for same price and if one fails, you still have 5 batteries left.
Also you need to be able to use the tool , what is the point of having battery thats bigger than the tool you use, is it just for show, ? It's sure not for doing any work.

I havent gotten through the entire video yet, and ill edit this as i watch it, but i cant stand the Made in China debate.
I honestly feel that the "Made in China" debate is actually blanket racism, as if by having them manufactured in China, or having parts Made in China and assembled elsewhere, Makita are utilizing the stereotypical poor chinese sweatshop labor or supporting the communist party.
This IS a practice that is utilitized, and it does exist, but it is also possible to enact quality control as well and pay your workers more and it still be cheaper than elsewhere.
Its almost like the same thing can happen in any country, yes, even America. Milwaukee bought an old manufacturing plant they tried to retrofit and had to scrap it and build a new plant 10 miles away after a bit because the quality was terrible, and this was in America.
Americans give so much guff about Made in China but if their product says Made in Mexico they dont mind.
The Made in Mexico factories are often much newer and advanced so quality control can be high, but Chinese factories can be the same high level of quality.
It is unfortunate that "Made in China" has the reputation it does, it is such a big country, but Made in Japan in the 60s-70s was percieved as a bad thing as they was still lingering WW2 feelings, but Makita, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and other companies turned public opinion around.
Ultimately, if tools start failing and they say "Made in China" its confirmation bias, and if they say made anywhere else people are going to assume the parts come from China because everyone beeds a scapegoat.

If a company goes to a Chinese manufacturer and specifies that that want the product to be manufactured to a price point, then you'll get a usable tool, but not a quality tool. If the company specifies that the tool must be made to a certain high standard (specific materials, tolerances etc) and set a QC standard then you'll get an excellent product.
Where a tool is manufactured isn't the issue, as Tools has stated it's what we're prepared to pay. If we where happy to pay a few extra bucks, but demanded a higher quality, then it'll cost us a few more bucks but we'll get a nicer tool.

  • @thekiwinomad

    • @onikwa
      @onikwa Před 7 měsíci +1

Not really, labour is a really small part of the overall production costs. The price of labour in China is cheaper for sure, but that has a lot more to do with the internal economy of a country, PPP and stuff like that (for example housing, food, and healthcare is far cheaper for Chinese workers than American). It has much more to do with the fact that the Chinese supply chain is highly self sufficient. Steel, copper, lithium, magnets, all mined within the same country. All the manufacturing equipment for power tools? Also made in China. Plastics? China. Need specific parts like screws, motors, PCBs, battery cells? The factory down the road makes them. There's a reason Milwaukee chose to make hand tools in America but not impact drivers, because to build something like that at a competitive cost takes an entire economy, you can't just plant a factory and start pumping out something as complex as modern power tools are.

@@wearetheremnants1615 The UK has a lot of good manufacturers. We shouldn't just say it's almost dead and allow it to die. The reason Makita moves production to China isn't to save me money. It's to make them more.

A lot of makita tools are double or more of almost all other brands for there less ordinary tools and most of them are still made in China so thats not a very good excuse

That is a very US centric point of view where brands are free to undercut the market... But in the end the customers pay for it. In the rest of the world Milwaukee is usually more expensive.

Are you comparing professional tools to professional tools? Makita is here one of the more reasonable prices ones. Only with Dewalt coming out cheaper but then again Dewalt is often cheaper also in quality.

@riba2233 If brands aren't free to undercut the market, is it still a free market?

@@chipreier1 it is not that simple. If you let companies undercut the market, they will become dominant, eliminate the competition and raise prices. After that, you have a monopolistic market and that is not even close to a free market. Look what happened with amazon... So all in all, you want some regulation for a healthy market.

Bruh, “Made in Japan” = a.) they don’t want a stockpile of all of those different colored impacts and (most commonly) b.) they don’t plan to sell many. Coincidentally, B is why the higher price. Economies of scale and all that ish.

The Japanese made Makitas are the top of the line and have the best build quality of any tools i have used. Us, canadian and Uk made tools follow closely with chinese made being bottom of the barrel. They are still good tools but if i had the choice i would get the Japanese manufactured model.

Most likely all the parts are made in China for the tools that are made in the uk, japan, USA, etc. The tools are just assembled in them countries. The makita 18v BL high torque and high speed screwdriver even say assembly in the USA from global parts on the box.
Metabo is doing the same for their tools that say made in Germany, look at where all the parts are made, china.
I can import to Australia a coloured 172 impact driver made in japan cheaper than I can buy a teal 172 made in china. The point you are claiming in your video doesn’t make sense, made in japan cost more ?

Two kinds of Makita tools in the USA. Big box store (HD, Lowe’s, etc) sell lower spec mode;s ALL made in China. My local contractor store sells higher spec models and most not made in China. Only Makita tool I’ve had a problem is highest spec 18V handheld light. Bought 2 separate times and went through 3 switches. Did not have the option on buyin a non China model, it does not exists. Makita, if you make a tool then make a model NOT made in CHina, shame on you
