A curfew??? That was super lightly mentioned right at the end but definitely needs some elaboration! Never heard of something like that until now in any country
Yes hah! All bars and restaurants close quite early... and you generally need to be back at midnight! Some places don't follow those rules and you'll hear about them in Luang Prabang for example...

Is a sim card absolutely necessary to use cellphones in Laos? Or when traveling to Lao can we simply add an international travel/ calling package plan through our cellphone carrier?
You can definitely add an eSIM or something like that. It’s just that the local SIM card is a lot cheaper… you get lots of data for little money. eSIM plans can be expensive and don’t always work so well (especially in very rural zones)

Google maps does work in Laos! We used it in all the towns
Do you have info on Viang Xai? The Lao Communist caves during the Vietnam War?
We didn't visit! But off the beaten path places are sometimes pretty difficult to reach! hope you found a way
