I was about to modify this hammer with no thought of making a video. Then at the last minute it seemed to be a worthy idea.
Hopefully you thought so too!

I like, how there isnt any of that annoying music that usually comes with these types of videos. The sounds of the crafting process are much more enjoyable to listen to.
Many_Lives yes. Even the bits where it’s sped up like the hammering bits
I'm a fan of grinding, filing, hammering spam noise's with the narration.
Agreed
@@harrigoldsmith8280 🤣 Feels like he's hitting me with a metal tool and talking about the engineering
I agree
The star of the show... This guys sander. Flipping gorgeous machine.
*guy's
@@kyrie26 appreciated. I'll leave it as is so that others may also learn from it.
Low that sand band has to be expensive.
Made here in Australia 👌👍
Absolutely...YES
Never mind the hammer,
That SANDER !
I want more info on the work table
I came here to say just this!
That is nice, I like the tilting capability. I built this one last month!
czcams.com/video/xVs_uERKA6Y/video.html
Love that sander. Where can i get one
Please tell me where I can get one of those Sanders??
I'm more impressed by how you made that wedge than anything else... damn that was slick
Yeah I found the woodwork far more impressive that the grinding
Never thought I was going to type this but,
That's a nice hammer
Seeing how to forge a hammer from stock steel would be a real treat. I hope you decide to produce it.
Watch Alec steel then
Will do! Thanks for the recommendation.
@@DanHoke and zh fabrications does some gorgeous hammers too.

Old hickory forge is good too!
Hello from Ladysmith, BC, Canada. I have no need for a blacksmith's hammer but having watched this video and having been around horses most of my younger years I am now trying to talk myself out of making one. This is a wonderful demonstration of your ideas and skills. Thank you and have a great 2020.
Thank you so much for this video My sister is new to blacksmithing and she is having a hard time finding hammers with the right size and weight for her. This video shows a good alternative.
You should start a Scrap Metal Challenge series just so you can take your Scrap Wood Challenge intro and turn it into a metal song!
That's a FINE idea! Cheers! Chris.
Scrap brass challenge, scrap steel challenge
It’s rusted, it’s dull
But some of the lead is good

Yes, what Justin said. Do that, great idea
That would be really cool.
Collab with 331Erock.
I need to pin a comment as I keep getting told how cheap a cross pein hammer is. It seems when I explain I couldn't get one where I live and I needed one straight away, somehow that's not understood! I understand this isn't a high quality hammer and I'm not comparing it to one but it'll get me by for a while!
Also for everyone asking about the grinder, it really is an amazing machine, it's made by 84 Engineering and sold by www.artisansupplies.com.au :)
Great video! How is the hammer working out?
i think the hammer turned out stellar. It is a tool for your shop. would be cool if you engraved your logo or name into the handle though. something to give it that extra touch of personalization.
I like to use a coarse flap disc on an angle grinder for shaping handles, messy but quick and actually quite controllable.
Glad i wasnt the only one blown away by that belt sander...thing 😍 boy i need me one of them

An unbalanced (face heavy) hammer is actually really nice for knife making. The weight helps keep the flat faced straight down without tilting sideways and making divots.
So jealous of your belt grinder!
Beautifully done. I'm glad you decided to film it!
Incredible show of craftsmanship for sure! Thanks for the show.
That’s a tough-looking tool, and you made it really nice.
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. It was when you put the bevel on the handle end that I realised just how hard that wood is. A good choice for the application I'm sure.
I started watching this because I was curious as to why you wouldn't just buy a cross pein hammer. I can fully see why, beautiful craftsmanship.
Thank you
I work for Vaughan and Bushnell mfg co. Out of Bushnell, IL USA and we make some of the best hammers and hand tools in the world. I work in the forge department. I started as a hammer operator and worked my way into maintenance and now I'm die maintenance in the forge department. I love my job and I love the forge department. It does get extremely hot as we have 12 slotted furnaces in our building and each furnace is around 2,200° F. But, it is a very hands on job and I've gotten a lot of experience and I've learned a lot from my job and it's an awesome environment to be in.
Those chisels look super sharp.
Luckily you made this vid man. That’s allot of views, hopefully you made allot of this video. Thank you for not having advertisements every few minutes I subbed
Blacksmith apprentices start out making their own tools once they graduate from sweeping up the shop and manning the bellows. I would love to see videos whilst you are making yours. Sending lots of love ❤ from sunny 🌅 Arizona 🌵 USA 🗽
Yas!!! When you start to forge your blacksmith Hammer I definitely want a video series on that. Still looking for property but will be building my own blacksmith Forge soon after I get some property so I will definitely need that video
I am making myself one tommorrow. Thanx for the inspiration
Great work Brother! I look forward to your videos, I always learn so much. Had you been my shop teacher back in the day, I might have actually enjoyed the class. Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos.
love it!
A superb and straight forward video, with no excessive wordiness!!!!
I really like the vinegar bath finish. I plan to make my first hammer soon.
You really nailed this hammer project. 🔨 👍
Your skills never cease to amaze! That hammer turned out great.
The guy definitely has talent.
I would like to see a "Can you tell?" episode, where five tools are next to five good quality, but production line made tools. Then have a expert, or not, pick.
Hold up there kills.
He made a $7 hammer out of a $10 one.
He did cure cancer.
Have you looked at - black bear forge - he has a lot of useful vids, he has one about avoiding tendon injury and talks about handle design and how it impact grip which can cause elbow tendon injury. He also uses a cross pein with the pien rotated 45 degrees from normal, I couldn’t figure it out until I noticed that the pein falls in line with the anvil when you take a normal comfortable stance in front of the anvil. All his stuff is worth watching.
I'll have to check the video about avoiding tendon injury, that would be really helpful! Thanks! :)
The latest "that works" vlog/whatever has some hammering tips too, I tried the technique they mentioned today and clearly need more practice.
Nice job! Thanks for sharing
You did a great job on this hammer.👍
This is so good. Love the homemade steel hammer wedges too; why didn’t I think of that!
I have that exact same hammer I've had it for almost 10 years it may be cheap but it's a damn good hammer. I use it when I build railroad tie retainers I can drive a 12 inch galvanized steel spike in four blows with that thing
Me too.
And this guy cut the handle off his.
Stupidity huh.
@@ChrisBrown-pw2lb why would you put a hard wood handle on it the composite handle does an awesome job of dampening the shock of use. I don't understand.
Some find wood handles to be superior for their jobs. Smiths tend to prefer wood handles for their performance. Additionally, wood handles resist damage from heat sources better than the composite.
i like how you present diffirent functionalities of your crafted tools : the belt sander with its multiple usage position, the clamp , the vice & all
sublime way to presnet your products
Very helpful video. Great job
Beautiful hammer. Love watching people make tools. Great work
In Russia we got old joke about this.
Some country bought assembly line for Soviet fighter jets, and some knocked down kits. However, after assembly they got tractor, not a plane. One retry, two, three, rereading plans - still got tractors. Then they called original manufacturers to ask what's wrong. Their responce is:
- Do you read assembly manual? You need to elaborately file the completed machine after the assembly!
Haha! I like it! :)
Yup sound like a scam to me
I don't get it:(
i like your humor, John, Australia.
scumbag benis Well if you file/remove enough material from a tractor itl eventually weigh as little as an aircraft
The real hero of this video is the belt on that belt sander hehe and of course the belt sander itself. Truly a beast!
That belt grinder is a beast!
Pask, I would watch you make a bowl of cereal. Don't ever not film something.
AMEN!! Totally agree
Changing "the kid's" diaper.

@@thickmike , thanks for the link to the video !
My thoughts exactly !! A true craftsman !!
Great video, I enjoy how you reuse and up-cycle tools and scrap into more useful things. Keep up the good work!
I like the you tell what you are doing. So that people can learn
This is the first of your videos I've watched, that's an amazing belt sander you have.
Holymoly that grinder moves a lot off material!

Hi P...I've decided, your awesomeness has no bounds. Super video - no crap music just the sounds of your labours. And a new super tool to add to the collection. Sometimes i like the peace of manual tools when time allows, the older i get the crankier i get about noisy anything. Grumpy? Me? Nah! Stay safe and keep up the good work.
Lovely camera work (as well as the obvious woodwork being brilliant too, well done)
I love your videos. Keep making!
That’s awesome! Great touch with metal wedges to lock it all up! Never seen that!
i got my cross pein hammer by luck .. driving down the highway i seen something in the road i slowed to see what it was an sure enough a cross pein with no handle picked it up made a handle from old broken axe i been saving for this exact occasion haha. i find old axe heads n different hammers from time to time can never have enough hand tools.
I got a hammer much like that one, but it needs a new handle.. fun to watch your video
Watching you watch paint dry would still be a good video :)
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers
I agree about using the rasp to shape a handle. Somehow it just seems right to use your hands to fit a tool that will be used by the same.
1:25 am, second day of Coronavirus lock down... got lost! Watching someone grinding a hammer... hi from South of France. One love
I hope you are doing well...
From California, the Bay Area were holding in there..
Hahaha me too.... ottawa, Canada
Amazing craftsmanship
I'm not a Smith but I still love these videos, there entering and I always learn something new
If you can forge a hammer, you can forge a ball!
Er...something like that
Great comment and great reference to Rip Torn, who just died a few days ago and uttered the line "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." What a treasure.
I think it's if you can dodge the cops you can dodge child support?
Is it "necessary" that I drink my own urine?
@@joebodynobody764 Sterile. Drink a lot and 50/50 you feel great or you feel sick as a dog
I assume he already forged a couple of balls, since his appear to be made of steel
Amazing...! I realize after watching this video that steady with a creative mind resulting in a good production.
Beautifully made
That turned out great! Glad you decided to share. Thank You
Nice looking hammer, and I love the vinegar finish.
Very nice job, I’ve been wanting to try doing the same thing to one of my old sledgehammers. Now you’ve given me the inspiration to give it a go!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Damn, that sander is an absolute unit.
Regional differences are funny, cross peen hammers are available at any store that sells tools in the USA. I have never seen a straight peen here and if I needed one would likely have to make one. Great video.
Same here in Romania. Ball peens are harder to find, but everything it's possible
Your awesome! Thank you for not putting crapy music
*You're
Was literally thinking about doing this today with my 2.5lb Dewalt hammer since I upgraded to handmade hammer last year
Awesome as always 👌🏻
That is one badasses belt sander. Of course that was very good work as well.
Roger Jordan what kind is it ?
The Breeders said it best. That is “one divine hammer”!
Beautiful work
Im here to support people helping people make cheaper tools themselves.
I’m so glad I found this channel
Quick question and a request. Did you make your belt grinder? And could we please have a video about your grinder with lots of shots of it’s setup and how it’s put together. Thanks. Mick 😃👍
I knew I should check the comments first before I asked the same question! Yes please, to seeing a little more of this!
I also want to know and se more about this!
Same
I thought about making one but I decided to buy instead. I love this machine, it's extremely well built, I use it every day and it's going to last me years so I'm very happy with my purchase. You can see a tour of the grinder in this video czcams.com/video/F-jHm-AQZac/video.html and this is where I bought it from www.artisansupplies.com.au :)
That's truly Awesome i don't know Why but I would never have thought to modifying a hammer great job please keep the videos coming they are very helpful take care and God bless you and yours 🙋♂️
Nice hammer. I have heard legends of the toughness of the Gum tree. That handle should be most excellent
I'd love to see the forging a hammer as a series! Sure, it's been done elsewhere, but everyone has a different take on the process and nuggets of knowledge come from each and every one.
This is like the Simpsons chilli episode. "They say he carved it from a bigger spoon" - Lenny. 🤣
The is one beautiful grinder machine, multi angle and all, who makes that?
Would be interested to know make of grinder too
As do I

Nice one bro. Love your idea and your craft. 👍
I liked this one. Makes me want to make custom handles for all my crap hammers 😂

Once again: WHAT A GREAT PROJECT!!!! It always baffels me how you come up with those amazing ideas. There can‘t be many people who, instead of buying a new hammer, look at the ones they already have and then make a new one out of them. And not only making a new hammer: It also looks great! IMPRESSIVE! 👏👍
I love your channel! Can‘t wait to see with what you are comming up next. 😁
Greetings from Switzerland
My belt sander don't pack that punch 😂
Awesome job man
Imagine spending that kind of time turning a $10 hammer into a $7 hammer.
My thoughts EXACTLY...!
Not everything is about money. But if you wanna talk about money, this video got 2.4M views which I'm sure generated more than $10 in ad revenue.
THANK YOU!
And spending $30 on sandpaper in the process.
I believe he said he was having trouble finding one locally, so it makes sense to me that he would convert what he had at hand... and make something exactly the way he wanted it
I ready do enjoy your work.
Loved the wedges!!
The steel wedges would have held a bit stronger if they weren't such a smooth surface, but I think it will hold. Might be worth keeping in mind though when you make a better hammer.
I cut little barbs in the side of mine with a bandsaw
I think you should do a video on that sander that you're using that thing's pretty cool
8:17 making steel shims that way ...simply brilliant!
Great project!
Pretty sparkles 😍
