Had Kolo Mauni scored that 123rd minute winner against Argentina in the World Cup final, I am convinced that Kylian Mbappe would've been lifting that Ballon D'or last night. 54 goals and a world cup winner? Would've been Mbappe hands down.
The thing that I found the weirdest about the ballon dor rankings is that Bounou finished 13th in the Ballon dor while Martinez who won the Lev Yashin trophy finishes 15th with Ederson 2nd in the Lev Yashin trophy not even making the top 30. And Onana who finished 23rd was 6th in the Lev Yashin trophy. That’s when you know this Ballon dor is a joke
None of them should've touched ballondor nominations. Allison, Ter Stegen and courtois. They are the ones who performed all year. Even de gea > Martinez or Bono. Allison had a mid wc, Ter Stegen had a trash wc on the bench and courtois was grouped. That's why they didn't go above. But these guys performed at club level all year.
Fun fact their are different votings for the 2 awards And World Cup has always been the most important tournament when considered Eg R9 was awarded due to his world Cup performance in 2002 and not his champions league The world Cup will always be the most important trophy in the history of this sport
Lev Yashin award has a different criteria than Ballon D'or. For me, the most unfair thing was what happened to Griezmann, him being 21st feels like a robbery. He is easily in the top 15.
I love how the Striker of the year award is basically just the 'you lost to messi in the ballon d'or rankings' award. Also why isn't there a defender and midfielder of the year award?

the fact that Modric won in 2018 already made me 99% sure Messi was winning this. it's ridiculous how much world cup performance outweighs everything else in football. sure it can stay being the most important factor but not as disproportionately as this. the gap between it and winning the next best thing (the champion's league) is so wide that winning the champions league plus 2 other major trophies still isn't enough to outdo it. that's just stupid

Mourinho talking about who is better between Ronaldo and Messi back in 2013 " Both are incredible but let me be real. It's much harder to be Ronaldo than to be Messi. This has nothing to do with defending portugal. I've ripped into Ronaldo many times during our time together. So I'm just being honest. One of them plays with the players he grew up with in a team and a structure he grew up in. The other one became one of the best in his home country then became the best in England in a totally different structure. Then became even better in a team that was in decline when he arrived. One plays as a number 9. Or a 9 and a half but basically in the box more or less with no defensive duties whatsoever. The other one has been a winger for most of his life. A real winger. Not a false 9. He scored 42 goals as a winger under mister Ferguson. How can a winger score 42 goals in one season.? A player that isn't protected by anyone or anything. They see the huge animal in barcelona and for him to get one yellow card he would have to maybe kill a player. The other one. One foul. Yellow card and don't touch me again or you're out Let's stop playing. If we want to give awards for amazing players to honor their career. Okay. Let's create another trophy. Let's give one to Drogba who carried Chelsea to champions league glory. Let's give one to Samuel eto'o who won 3 champions leagues and 2 trebles. Let's give one to lampard. Let's give one to Zanetti the greatest capitan ever. Let's give a trophy to Steven gerrard who gave his life for anfield. We have lots of trophies to give. But if we're talking about the ballon d'or. We give it to the most impactfull player of that season. So if we agree that Messi and Ronaldo are equal. Here's my question. Is it normal that one has 1 and the other 4 No it should be 3 vs 3 or 3 vs 2. And don't get me started on the 2010 one. And now he wins again. And another thing. Ballon d'or without any trophies won? We're talking about big trophies. . Chelsea won the champions league. We won the league 9 points ahead of barcelona. How is Messi winning this one? "
Let's put unto perspective how biased the balon dor is. Imagine lionel messi went to man City, and in his first season, he has 60+ goal involvement, won the treble, the three most relevant trophies to win (epl, ucl and fa cup) while haaland went to a psg(lowest ranked league in europe) Won the league , didn't win the ucl, goes to the world Cup and scores 4 penalties, winning the world Cup with a star studded Argentina. Who do you think would have won the balon dor ???
Well, he just contradicted himself. Player perfomance im what they rate, and then he said they gave it to him with no trophies. It's not Maradona's era anymore, being the best player in the world or even in history alone won't get you trophies. This applies very well to what happened now. Messi just had possibly the best individual perfomance ever in a world cup. Meanwhile, Stats wise (Not trophies), Man City did worse than the previous season, Julian fits much better the system than Haaland, which is what Pep realised now, hence why he is being played much more and Haaland isn't quite doing as well. Haaland is a monster of scoring, but he doesn't play particularily well outside of the box.
@@brandonayong5823you mean the 2012 year? The year where Messi scored 91 goals? Cuz that's the year Jose is talking about as Chelsea won the champions league that season. Ronaldo didn't have the stats nor the trophies to win it that year so I don't know what you're talking about
then its just a popularity contest with the fans. the average fan is absolutely not equipped with the mental capacity to accurately identify the worlds best player
My issue with all of this is that the only argument Messi fans go to when defending him is that he won the world cup. Don't get me wrong, the world cup is prestigious, but surely we can all agree that the Champions League is harder to win. Also that's it. Messi had a good time at PSG, but Haaland was the key puzzle City needed to finally win the UCL. He outdid Messi in every metric. Can we just agree Haaland had a better year than Messi

When Modrić was given the Ballon D'or for carrying Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final, everyone complained. When Messi won the Ballon D'or this year after Argentina won the World Cup, no one complained. Fascinating.
@StillAwesome21 Putting it into perspective, Argentina is a country that at the time won 2 World Cups previously and has produced some of the world's best players of all time. Croatia by contrast is a country of 3 million people who only were independent since the 90's that were in their first and only ever World Cup final in 2018. Of course you can argue that Modrić didn't win the World Cup so he didn't deserve the Ballon D'or, but comparing the countries and their respective talent pools, I'd say there isn't much of a difference here.

@TheIrishGuy - Sir Stanley Matthews revolutionised the game like Johan Cruyff, Puskas or Pele has. That’s why he won it - plus I think comparing him to a different era isn’t the right comparison to do. The 1950s is nearly 75 years ago now and it’s easy to take the mick out of that era of football which isn’t fair because it was a different game. It's telling of how much Lionel Messi has aged that he now has to resort to the Luka Modric manner of winning Ballon D'ors. Have an alright club season and then win the World Cup Golden Ball.
Julian Alverez over Mo Salah did it for me. The World Cup itself isn't credible. You couldn't watch the final and not think things were going on that would never happen in the Champions League.

Thats the shitty thing they didnt gave to Lewa for 2020 2023 is equal as much for Messi as Haaland. Might be the Last one for MESSI now
Messi was more decisive when it mattered most, it's that simple. Maybe if Haaland wanted to win, he should've shown up when it mattered most. But no, in the UCL semis he was carried by KDB and Silva, in the FA cup semis he was carried by Mahrez, in the UCL final he was carried by Rodri, in the FA cup final was carried by Gundo. Haaland isn't even the best player on his team, Rodri and KDB are. Goals without context aren't everything.
it cannot be a coincidence that the season he turns up City finally win the Champions League. You are lecturing about context, but are yourself missing it. Even when Haaland didn't score he was a big presence in the opposition box, defenders would be focused on him, and that helped the other players find space to score goals. And he did score in big games. 2 goals and an assist over 2 legs against Bayern. Maybe Champions League quarterfinals are not big enough for you. A hattrick in the Manchester Derby, 2 goals across 2 games against nearest challengers Arsenal. Not big games? Maybe for you only goals in finals count. @StillAwesome21 Guy was played as a cb for the whole tournament, can't blame him for that. And I'll take a note from Messi fans always blaming the defense when Barca gets owned in the UCL, by saying that it ain't Rodris fault that Spains forwards are ass.
messi 100% deserved this ballon d’or. he dragged a pretty mid Argentina team to a world cup and had just as many direct goal contributions as Haaland in less games.
@@unlockedaccount was a joke but with an underlying point, haaland had excellent service and most of his goals were good chances inside the box, messi is more versatile when it comes to goalscoring, haalands not a tap in merchant but come on, messis goals are better
You talking as if Argentina didn't had Lautaro, Mac Allister, Di Maria, Dybala, Romero, Emi, Lisandro, Enzo, Julian Alvarez etc. Fine if u think Messi deserves it, the narrative that he had "no help" in the WC is a fcking joke.
Well if it was actually a best player award, it would've gone to messi for all the years from 2009 to 2019. Weird that ppl give ucl priority when it is way shorter than the 38 game league season but when its a world cup, its a 7 day tournament? You say Haaland is being punished for being in Norway but at the same time, he is playing for by far the best team in the world. If he was in man united, he would've been a good player but nothing more. If its like the trophies shouldn't matter then Kane had a way more impressive season than haaland. The ballon dor is not a celebration of the best player but who was the most marketable. If Haaland had performed like messi did in the world cup, he wouldve won. He is a great player but what messi did at the world cup, haaland didnt do in any 7 game stretch last year.
That's because Norway didn't qualify for the World Cup that's why everyone are saying Haaland don't deserve it because Norway didn't qualify. So now we are in a situation where the only way you can win the Balon D'or if you help you country win a trophy and forget what you did for your club.
@@cuthbertmcvane9159 buddy i clearly mentioned that haaland played for the best club in the world by far. If Messi played for city, he would've won everything too. And at the same time, norway had 2 players in the top 30 of the ballon d'or, just 1 less than Argentina did. So is norway really that bad? But the easiest way to prove who deserves the award is by asking yourself, would City be more successful without haaland or would Argentina be more successful without Leo? It's pretty clear after that tbh Leo won MOTM in all but one game at the biggest tournament and it happens once evey 4 years. He scored in all but one game. He was 2nd in the goalscoring charts and top in the assist charts. He was the golden ball winner. It's unprecedented what he did. What haaland did has been done before and will be done again. That's why Messi won it and it is pretty easy to see why
People say "tap-in" like scoring goals is so easy anyone could do it. I mean, it's not like he had the best season in the history of an entire league, right?
@@man4437 true... The problem though is a retarded donkey would have scored 30+ goals up front playing for man city last year. Without Haaland, city probably still win the treble. Without Messi, Argentina isn't even qualifying for the WC
I think that saying "tap in merchant" shows a lack of game knowledge. Do you think Guardiola would put up with a "tap in merchant" in his team? No, the reason Haaland is elite is because he has the ability to turn any opportunity into goals. Just watch his second against Burnley back in August. (Also there's a very strong argument to be made that what people call "tap-ins" are a skill in and of themself)
Why do people think the Ballon d'Or award is a top scorer award 😂 Its for the best player. You cannot tell me Haaland was more influential on that City side than Messi was to Argentina. This is why Messi won. City won the Champions league despite Haaland having very quiet games in the semi finals and final. This is because they have a billion pound super team. If Messi didn't turn up for one game for Argentina they are out! BTW I love Haaland and think hes a class act, but Messi deserves it for me. Haalands time will come.
Messi was influential for Argentina during a 7 game tournament, also why the hell are you comparing messis international performances to haalands club performances? 2 completely different categories, haaland was way better for city than messi was for psg
@@icecreamman3545 Exactly. So let's compare Haalands international performances with Messis. I mean for Norway not qualifying for the Euros is a disaster. They only came 3rd in their group despite having a way better squad than Scotland
@@dave-ld8mo Norway only has 4 players valued over 20million and an overall squad value of 458 million, on the other hand Messi Argentina is valued at 800million with 13 players valued over 20 million, it's an unfair comparison
@@icecreamman3545 You can compare them based on expectation. IMO it is harder for Argentina to win the world cup than it is for Norway to qualify for the Euros. Haaland should at least have qualified with Norway for the Euros where they came third. Scotland has an overall value of only 320 million and qualified in the same group. So the point I was making is that even with bad national teams, great players should be able to at least help their team qualifying for those events. Zlatan did it with Sweden, Lewandowski did it with Poland, Salah did it in 2018. This is now the second major tournament Norway fail to qualify
@@dave-ld8mo actually, Norway can still qualify through the Nations League. And if qualifying for the Euros is such a big deal, give Scott Mctominay the Balon d'or
So let me get this straight. Ronaldo is still revered for the greatest ever World Cup campaign by a striker in the 2002 WC, winning the Ballon D'or despite playing only 10 matches in the whole season for Inter. Cannavaro is a hero for winning it with Italy. Modric won it and is a darling for people for finishing second at the World Cup.Modric who btw, finished inside the top 10 yesterday despite the fact that he wasn't even Madrid's best midfielder and did absolutely nothing with Madrid last season, ahead of Gundogan, a treble winning captain, and we don't see any outrage, because he's overprotected by the Madrid PR. But suddenly, it's a disgrace when the best player at the World Cup, who got 60+G/A in the season wins it. What an absolute joke.
That Award is one, where National Coaches and Captains vote as well as a bunch of so called "expert" journalists, of course it's heavily influenced by the world cup, whe 2/3 of those voting are doing so in their national team function. if they manage to get the voting right, that is, there are always some, that manage to mess up their votes... 😅
16 goals, 16 assists in the league and 4 and 4 in the champions league. For Messi yes you'll say it's average or good but any other player you'll drool over the prospect of having such stats. And Michael, Iniesta didn't win it in 2010 coz he was injured half the season. And he missed games after the world cup as well.
@@jimmyjohn8999 Ofc not any other year he'd have had his name on the plaque from the day the final ended. But since BDO changed the rules of the award to a seasonal one and the wc does come in that period it's bizarre to overlook the outcome of the wc.

He was a good player for PSG and the centre piece of the team that won the most prestigious tournament in football and possibly sports. Many top players and coaches share the same opinion as well.
I am from Argentina and even I think Haaland should have won it. Messi is a great player even at 36 and yes he won the World Cup. But come on. Haaland had a better season overall, won the treble and broke the Premier League scoring record. This award is feeling less and less important

" Both are incredible but let me be real.
One foul. Yellow card and don't touch me again or you're out
Let's stop playing.
Because he won, big difference. 😂
Of course you can argue that Modrić didn't win the World Cup so he didn't deserve the Ballon D'or, but comparing the countries and their respective talent pools, I'd say there isn't much of a difference here.

it cannot be a coincidence that the season he turns up City finally win the Champions League.
Ye Ye Whatever lets u sleep at night pepsi fan
@@yuvan600 And you're still crying, right?
That Award is one, where National Coaches and Captains vote as well as a bunch of so called "expert" journalists, of course it's heavily influenced by the world cup, whe 2/3 of those voting are doing so in their national team function. if they manage to get the voting right, that is, there are always some, that manage to mess up their votes... 😅
Messi deserved it, the world doesn't revolve around epl
16 goals, 16 assists in the league and 4 and 4 in the champions league. For Messi yes you'll say it's average or good but any other player you'll drool over the prospect of having such stats. And Michael, Iniesta didn't win it in 2010 coz he was injured half the season. And he missed games after the world cup as well.
36 in 35 games in the league for haaland, 12 in 11 in the champions league. and those numbers are worse then messi’s?
@@jimmyjohn8999 Ofc not any other year he'd have had his name on the plaque from the day the final ended. But since BDO changed the rules of the award to a seasonal one and the wc does come in that period it's bizarre to overlook the outcome of the wc.
@@aaronmathew3129 it's bizarre to overlook the WC but not bizarre to overlook the treble. Got it
@@nikolas8203 I didn't say Haaland's treble is a small achievment. Any other year and if prolly any other team had won the wc(except England, France or Portugal) he'd have had it. I'm just arguing for my case where people are saying Messi doesn't even deserve 1% of this. He was a good player for PSG and the centre piece of the team that won the most prestigious tournament in football and possibly sports. Many top players and coaches share the same opinion as well.
I didn't think we could get a bigger robbery than 2021, but here we are.
How was 2021 a robbery? Messi statiscally was clear of Lewandowski. Same this year.
You're absolutely spot on Irish guy
I am from Argentina and even I think Haaland should have won it. Messi is a great player even at 36 and yes he won the World Cup. But come on. Haaland had a better season overall, won the treble and broke the Premier League scoring record. This award is feeling less and less important

I’m actually happy with the Ballon D’or standings for once 😅
Messi 1st, alvarez 7th, modric top 10 one of the worst years in a while
Emiliano Martinez getting nominated alone is woeful
@@harveythatguy2757lol Modric and Alvarez should of been lower (salah and lewa top 10 instead imo) messi or haaland to win it was a coin flip

Let them complain, it won't change history. Messi won, End of discussion. It's that simple. 🤷🏾♂️
Literally, “no,no,no,no,no”.
always top notch Irish guy
irish guy what's ur height
I remember English fans crying about World cup being boring and them wanting their weekend football back as soon as they were kicked out. Ofc they won't know the value of a trophy they can't get even a sniff at.
My man, just stop. You don't have any good defense. You are just pulling random arguments here and there
Wait so you’re telling me when someone’s international team got knocked out of a tournament, they actually want to get back to club football. That’s mental, I’ve never heard anything so preposterous
@@animamaster And you literally said “muh 50 goals” and now you’re projecting. Talk ball let’s go,
@@Pricklypeen Ok, what all did Messi contribute to in PSG. How far did PSG go to the Champions League stages. How did they do in the Coupe de France
@@animamaster 32 g/a in 32 games in the league. 4 goals in 7 games in the UCL. That is playing in the free role that KDB plays for city btw.
winning the World Cup is the best trophy a player can win, so yes of course Messi deserves win the Ballon D'Or.. i think people forget how much an international competition can have an impact on the Ballon D'Or.. There's NOTHING better than winning a World Cup or a even Euros that's what ppl don't seem to understand, that's why i predict that Mbappé will win the Ballon D'Or next season because i think we'll win the Euros!
France winning the euros 😂
If messi deserved the ballondor for the WC, griezman or mbappe deserved in 2018, neuer in 2014, iniesta or xavi in 2010 and so on
then why did Messi win it in 2010, why did Griezmann or Mbappe not win it in 2018
Lowkey hate how speed was there
Inter Miami has the same amount of Ballon d'Ors as PSG and Liverpool.
Nah Messi absolutely deserved it for captaining his country to winning the World Cup
Curyff was right it’s just an award where journalists vote for there friends
Cruyff also said Messi was the best player he'd ever seen. How will you dispute that?
@@chloeninetynine cruyff was right I like Messi but haaland was far better last season than Messi
Ngl, all you've done is justify why he won the world cup with those 2002 and 2004 comparisons. Like yeah, those guys didn't deserve to win it now that you mention it, but 20 years down the line and noone cares, everyones moved on. You have to actually check who came second and who deserved it.
Not only is the World Cup one month, but also only every 4 years, wtf is this? 😒
Biggest world tournament
Biggest pressure
Biggest meaning
Just give the ballon d'or to Messi till he dies. He will win it even if he scores 1 goal. Has no value now. The majority of the fans don't even care about it. It's only a leverage for people to use in arguments for the club they support.
He wasn't nominated last year btw. You're just salty.
