    Here is the first model train review to come to kick-start 2013 with and here I am reviewing the Hornby R1155 Virgin Trains Alstom Pendolino Train Set which I picked up for a great price online at ModelZone. I have been meaning to get this set for a while as I do like the Class 390 Pendolino trains and the one included in this set is based on 390004 in the attractive "Alstom" livery. I have two additional trailers for this set which will make a six car formation that is seen in the test video. I would like to have seen Hornby release the additional matching "Alstom" liveried trailer cars to make the full set in the same livery, but the substituted default Virgin Pendolino carriages look okay in the formation and are not out of place.
    The Hornby Class 390 Pendolino model does have a working tilting mechanism as the model is designed to tilt on corners just like the real thing does on the West Coast Main Line. The train set consists of the R8250 train controller apparatus with the newer slimline transformer, an oval of track (8x R609 third radius curve track, 2x R601 double straight, 2 R600 straight pieces with a basic siding (R8213 left-hand point and a R608 single curved (often known as the "corrector" curve in sidings) piece and a standard buffer stop (the default siding is ideal for placing a stunning locomotive in for eye-candy). The set also comes with a trackmat which can be used with the additional track packs available from Hornby to create an interesting layout from the standard oval that is included with this set. So there is enough track included to get you started if you are a newcomer to this exciting hobby. The driving end trailers are DCC ready and do have a DCC 8 pin socket so you will require two decoders with an 8-pin plug harness for this model if you wish to run the train on DCC as I am going to fit two Lenz Silver decoders on this model when I upgrade it to DCC mode. I do apologise that my narration is not at its best in this video as I am recovering from a mucus bug cold that is going around. So I still need to drink more Jameson whiskey to shift the damn thing. Based on the price and what's included with the set, I have given this train set from Hornby a perfect 10 as it is an amazing set in my opinion.
    Overall Rating: 10/10.

    Thanks for positive comment. There is some videos of my "Phase I" layout which is mainly shown in my newer uploads before it got demolished as I am in the final steps of moving house and I should be covering more on my new layout project when I have settled in and moved house (Hopefully more space should mean a larger layout as I am getting an unfurnished house this time around rather than a furnished one). Also its going to be more meaningful next time around with better scenery etc.
    Ash.

    Ah, The Hornby Pendolino! I got this for Christmas last year, my first ever train set, it brought the model railway back to life, as my older brother and dad had one until it was put into storage as my older brother had no interest in it anymore, so I was very excited to open up the wrapping paper and see the Pendolino, I remember opening up that little bit and seeing "00 GAUGE TRAIN SET", the amount of excitement, the feel, and now we're planning on extending our layout for the second time! A nice terminus station with 2 line's leading to it, lots of platforms too! :D
    Enjoy your trains!
    Cheers!
    Ed.

      That's grand news mate. Many years ago in 1986, I got my first HST which was a Lima one. It was a simple train set with just two carriages and two end cars with an oval of track. When I open the wrapping on my birthday in that year. I remember just being overwhelmed with joy as I have always loved the Class 43 HST's from childhood. I built my first model railway in 1989 and what feeling it gives when one builds their first model railway. I have been hooked on railways and model railways ever since. I am hoping that once I settle down and build my family, I hope I can pass this exciting hobby onto my children as well :).
      Glad you enjoyed the video buddy and I wish you all the best with building your model railway.
      Kind Regards
      Ash.

    Nice review Ash,I've enjoyed browsing your videos over the last year as I'm new to this I'm looking for ideas. It is a nice set alright and I also was looking at getting one although in Ireland it's a little harder to get the Alstom version.I have to admit that controler that Hornby use is pretty bad. Glad your happy with your new purchase and keep drinking the Jameson for medicinal purposes. Daz

    Hi Ash.
    I do love the Pendolino, probably one of my favourite HST type trains out there!
    I had a pendolino before. It was the digital version, the R1076, sadly I was only 5 or 6, since I got it for Christmas. And I broke it within a few months because it kept falling off my table. Also the couplers ALL broke on them, especially the smaller hole-type ones.
    After that I never really had any opinion on it, until the Alstom one came in.
    I am definitely hoping to get this since I have a Virgin 125 HST and an Olympics London 2012 Javelin (Class 395) which STILL works to this day!
    Anyways I hope that you liked my small story.
    Regards

      @BritishRail60062  Před 9 lety

      Hornbylad200 Hello. I have to agree that the Pendolino is a nice modern looking train and I prefer it to the 800/801 class as its nicer looking. The Alstom branding looks great but my favourite all time train is the Class 43 HST diesel train as I prefer diesel power over the electric units to be honest. I would try someone like Hattons in Liverpool as they might still have this train set even though I bought this one 3 years ago.

    • @jamtart606
      @jamtart606 Před 9 lety

      Sometimes its best to just give them a ring and ask them if they have it in stock mate. Failing that, just check on eBay as these sets do come on there at times.

    • @jamtart606
      @jamtart606 Před 9 lety

      ***** I usually buy from Ebay since they have very good offer prices for these particular train sets, I would usually go for "Buy it now" rather than bids since they usually put the P&P very high, and sometimes ridiculously high.
      The cheapest I could find is £139/140.
      Because I live in London I would recommend West London Models since they have model trains, (including the Pendolino) for amazing prices.

  • @BritishRail60062

    Thanks. As for the lubrication. I would recommend add a drop of Gaugemaster or Peco Powerlube to the exposed gears which should help keep them running smooth. Never ever use WD40 as that stuff will damage the models as its not a lubricant. You can get spare traction tyres from Pete's Spares on eBay. Hope this helps.

    Hello there. I am pleased that you liked the video and found this review useful. I have a solution which could fulfil your son's dream. How about if you bought him a train set like this one and put it away in the loft or somewhere well hidden and then give it to him when he becomes about 5 or 6 years old? As I got my very first set at the age of just 6 (it all took off from there) which was a Lima HST. I am sure that he would love that and it would give him hours of fun on his first layout! :).

    Nice video! Your set actually looks nicer than the real thing! Nowadays the colours seem to have faded in the weather and the red looks more like a faded pink/red. Definitely in need of a repaint. At least some of the coaches anyway.

    • @BritishRail60062
      @BritishRail60062  Před 9 lety

      Thank you for the comment. I think the reason is that Virgin Trains will likely lose the WCML operations this year as they have just gained the ECML franchise from East Coast Trains. So the likelyhood of the real pendolino trains getting repainted by Virgin West Coast is zero although I do agree that a fresh paint job would spruce them up a lot :). I reckon Hornby will make a 225 set next year in the Virgin Trains East Coast livery based on the launch set :).
      Ash.

    • @gkeaoyrge
      @gkeaoyrge Před 9 lety

      ***** I didn't think of that, yeah good call! I like the new livery on the 225 too. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the upcoming Hitachi Class 800/801 sets that are to replace the 125/225. Maybe I'm just being too old-fashioned or maybe I just like the old HST and Electra cars too much haha.

    • @BritishRail60062
      @BritishRail60062  Před 9 lety

      kingofkeyboards I have to agree mate. I know I am probably going to get slapped with the reality-stick here for being over sentimental. But it wells me up inside that the father country that gave birth to the railway in the 1800's no longer produces or builds its own trains outside of Bombardier in Derby. This will mean that both the HST and the 225 sets will be the last British-built and designed high speed trains that will run on its home turf and both trains will be legendary trains in my opinion as the HST is still the fastest diesel passenger train in the world and nothing has even beaten the 1973 speed record of 148.3mph during its testing.
      I know a lot of people disliked the MTU repowered HST's but it kept them alive and most importantly, it was better than being completely replaced by the inadequate Class 220/221/222 or a 180 set which I have never accepted as a full fledged passenger express train :). Just had a look at the Class 800/801 sets and to me, they look very similar to the Class 395's at the front with a design mixed with the Amtrak "Acela" trains that run in America along the NorthEast Corridor if you have seen them mate? At the moment I am neutral with the new Hitachi trains but maybe they will grow on me in the future and might look better in the Virgin Trains "Stealth" livery :).
      Ash.

    • @BritishRail60062
      @BritishRail60062  Před 9 lety +1

      Louis Chesney
      I would assume that the weather has bleached the red to some degree. It will not be repainted now because as Virgin Trains now has east coast, someone else will be taking over the West Coast operations. Most likely First or Abellio will win it.

      OO is a scale of 4mm to the foot and HO is 3.5mm to the foot, both running on the same track which is more or less the correct gauge for HO scale at 16mm OO scale is closer to 18mm. OO was originally made bigger to fit the larger motors of the time inside the smaller British loading gauge, when HO or half O gauge was introduced.
