As a veteran since ARR beta, I never had the opportunity to experience this game coming into it after all those changes made. What's fascinates me is back in ARR launch, the game was paced very well for combat. Granted we only had 1 to 50. But between those level, we also had cross job system. Basically a way for us to mix and match class skills. For example, White Mage ability to wield Blizzard 2 or Paladins with Death Blossom from Ninja. The system was made to encourage level all the classes so that we could build a unique Job. I believe this kept the game very interesting for those that started in ARR.

I've noticed over time that people who post one star reviews of a certain game, could be FF14 or really ANY game, typically are used to zombie shooters and have the attention span of a squirrel high on crack and Redbull. As a result I tend to just ignore them or default to, "Generic WoW fanboy clone No. 1,859,178."

Got back into the game a few months ago & somewhere along HW, I started paying attention (thanks, Aymeric, lol). Half the internet makes content out of other content. Its the endless cycle of birth and rebirth and continuous rebirth - until people get tired and want another topic XD But yeah, sometimes there's evergreen topics so go for it XD
Anyway, in my experiance, everyone will be disappointed with FF14 if they go into the game with expectations. Every game will fail to live up to your standarts if you expect it to be a certain, already familiar way. If you want to play a new game, any game, do away with your preconceptions and play it as if you've never played any (online) game before. Anything else is disappointment garantied.
When I started FF14, coming from WoW, I left behind a game to join another. There were similarities so it wasnt entirely new when it came to mechanics like tap-targeting and such, but I treated it like a whole new experiance. And I loved it! From the start! Yes, including ARR and post-ARR and the Titan quest line. Hell, I got to HW and I was like "whoot, already??". You wanna make yourself and others miserable, go and expect perfection - works everytime.

One of the issues they had with the servers during the Endwalker was the lack of extra servers because of the supply chain shortage that happened during the pandemic. To my knowledge they wanted to increase the server capacity but just didn't have the servers available. This launch wasn't as bad as the Stormblood launch because they were able to prep for it a bit, and if you look back at Shadowbringers they handled that one much better.

Somewhat agree about the negatives of the combat systems in this game, especially at low level where you only have a few buttons to press, it can feel boring really quick. When I started playing ffxiv, I came from mmoarpg's that have fast paced combat with combos & a focus on timing evasive maneuvers to dodge mechanics, I will always much prefer systems like that compared to tab target mmo's though ffxiv does improve when you're higher level with more skills to use, and it is more accessible to casual players and savage raiding provides enough of a challenge.

The thing about voice acting you mentioned at roughly 7:00 is just plain misinformation. Its not that they didnt care about the voice acting, the issue was that they didnt have even nearly enough funds to get a proper cast going to voice literally everything in arr. Which should be very understandable given the fact that yoshi p worked with what little he had to revive the game and something many people often just forget in the moment - arr is 50 levels of base msq, compared to the expansions which only have 10.

I know it’s almost fashionable to bash ARR and give a rote “but wait for the later story/expansions”. As someone who only started playing a bit over a year ago, I got sucked in almost immediately.
I say that as someone who came from MMOs all the way back to Ultima Online, running the gamut all the way to the usual suspects (WOW and SWTOR mostly). I had avoided it because I was never one for JRPGs and the whole “cat girl thing” just made me roll my eyes. But after a few long in-depth reviews, talking about the community and the story, and wanting to play an MMO again, what with WOW being dead to me, I took the leap. Wouldn’t cost me a cent after all, so why not?
If ARR hadn’t grabbed me almost from the start, I don’t think I would have continued. I’m a bookworm, reading long text boxes with story exposition doesn’t deter me. Class progression was smooth, as was introduction into the overall game mechanics. The story had some rough spots, but I’ve read worse first novels that turned into magnificent series.
That said Shadowbringers remains my favourite, with Endwalker only second (though the patch storylines are grabbing me almost more than the base expansion. YMMV). I’ll come out and say it, Stormblood was single-handedly ruined for me by Asahi. So sue me.

  • @k2k4
    @k2k4 Před rokem

As someone who started after wow classic switched to tbc and i couldn't stand it anymore, i found that the early game, specificly the 100 quests in ARR after the main scenario was resolved, was the hardest part. I mostly played solo, and stopped at 70, 80, and then 90 to level literally all jobs (though i didn't complete all the crafting and gathering jobs until 90). I'll say that putting that much time and effort into a completion effort was not something i would recommend to a new player, but in hindsight i feel like i got the experience i wanted out of the game. I am slowly taking my time with the 6.x patches but I've pretty much dropped off the last few weeks since my main goals are done in the game.
I get the critics though, as the endwalker launch kind of sucked for a few weeks, the early game was kind of a slog, and approaching a new MMO with 6 expansions you need to go through to get the experience that is amazing is a tall order for many people.

I played ff14 for a long while. I really only made it to post-stormblood, though. I enjoyed most of my time with the game. My problem is kind of in the combat. Don't get me wrong, I think the combat is pretty cool, it's just the mentality for raids and stuff just isn't for me. Learning fights, coordinating with other people, etc. But then, I was never an mmo player. I trudged through ARR and got to Heavensward and after I finished HW I had never played a game, personally, with such great writing. It was sooo good. Stormblood... not so much imo. But then everyone said Shadowbringers even blew HW out of the water and I'm sad I never got there. I just haven't felt like going back to it.

I'm nearing 5,000 hours of playing this game, and I can say that I don't disagree with a lot of these complaints.
I completely skipped all cutscenes, and I don't regret it one bit. The game has really fun combat, great raids, and fun PvP. I would have never experienced any of it if I had stuck with the story. FFXIV story is too verbose and boring.
Having played the game for so long, I've begun watching the story whenever there are content droughts. ARR had very little intrigue, and honestly, Heavensward was not much better either. The way that the writers of XIV tell stories just isn't for me. Even FFXVI has elements of FFXIV in its storytelling, and it has caused me to come to a complete halt in progression because the storytelling and questing has hit a brick wall in terms of enjoyment.
Others love this style of storytelling, but I feel it is just not for everyone.

i believe that they didnt do anything about the increase in players at endwalkers release because, the player count will increase drastically at the release of an expansion but over the next few weeks its going to decrease again and go back to being its usual steady player count.
im not a business man so i cant say for sure but buying more servers would cost more resources than its worth, when you know the player count is gonna decrease and stabilze after a few weeks and you have to remember, at the end of the day it is a company and they gotta think about profits and stuff like that.
Even if yoshi-p aka jesus wanted to add more servers, he cant just do it, he is not the president of square enix so he cannot make those kinda moves without consulting the higher ups and you also have to think about square enix's investors and a billion other things.
Another thing is that, people say its an MMORPG, but if you think about it, its more like an RPGMMO, yes it sounds like the same thing and it pretty much is, however an MMORPG is first and foremost an MMO with RPG aspects while an RPGMMO is the opposite and RPG with MMO aspects and i feel that FFXIV is more of an RPGMMO due to its focus on the story and how most things regarding the story can be done solo, especially with the new trust system, you dont even need to queue with real player to complete dungeons, which is nice for dungeons that no one plays anymore. However the trust system does take away some of that MMO feel, but hey if you really wanna be immersed in the story and play the dungeons with the npcs you interact with, go ahead be my guest, if thats how you enjoy the game then keep doing it, i dont pay your sub, do what you think is fun and what makes you happy.

Mostly what I heard here is that ppl are just to lazy to read and actually give the game a chance lol ARR isn't as bad as everyone says it is honestly bc as someone that has read absolutely everything ARR is actually a very well told story I even enjoyed it more than Stormblood personally. But yeah you can't really listen to ppl that says the story is boring bc they were to lazy to read it smh. I'm not even the hugest fan of this game either I literally only play it for the story and to RP with my FC and to do some fishing. I think everything else in this game is pretty mediocre at best but come on these ppl make me laugh 😂

the review complaining about cutscenes baffles me the most, how do you spend bare minimum 600-700 hours on the expansion MSQ's and 3 different 8 man raid storylines only to not realise that you're playing a story driven MMO
that'd be like playing TF2 or OW and complaining about the incentive/need for teamwork and communication

I think people make the mistake of considering FFXIV to be an 'MMORPG', when it's more like an 'RPGMMO'
You are basically playing a Final Fantasy game that has the largest FF story and world to date, and gives you the ability to play it with other people.
People seem to come in expecting it to be WoW. But WoW actually bored me far more then 14 ever has, and I played WoW for something like six plus years. I think some of them forgot how ugh the early lving grind was there too.
I'll take 14's "kill three of this creature" over WoW's 'Kill as many as RNG needs to get ten of this item' (possibly 20 creatures) any day. xp Gathering ten wolf pelts as a newbie with two abilities seemed to take way too long.
People who think there are problems with getting a few angry people because they said anything bad about 14 need to watch out for the absolute roasting you can get in WoW. I have met a lot of good people in WoW, but the larger community I learned to stay away from because of a long track of negative experiences. Granted, I think people just so used to complaining about WoW at this point, it's own fans key among them, that no one really cares to defend it anymore. Fourteen isn't like that for the most part. Most of the fan base believes in supporting the devs who make the game and giving more structured critism rather then just lambasting.

Either read the story and don't skip cutscenes or don't play the game as you won't enjoy it. It's OK to not like story games but don't come here, skip the content and then say you don't like the content. That's like me making a character on wow and saying the games trash because it has no content, I didn't do any PVE or PVP as I don't like that aspect of MMo's but wow is trash as it has no content outside of Dungeons, raids and PVP which I do not enjoy so i skipped them all.

ARR is bad, it's completely irredeemable. If you don't know it gets better, or you are not a seasoned mmo veteran who also likes cat girls or expects a painful early game, it's a tough sell. I enjoy the game, however, I also have weird takes such as, Shadowbringers story is better than Heavensward, and I was always a cat girl enjoyer. I also researched every job to see how it plays at max lvl, before even playing the game. I can't imagine most people will do this, in fact, I imagine they are either going to get tired of unnecessary ungodly amounts of contextless text. And if that doesn't get them, a look at the early game of most jobs will be a quit moment, they will be like: is this all there is, 3 buttons at 2,5 sec gcd? And you know what, they are correct, cause that's all there is that level, you don't even get to see future abilities cause you don't have your job crystal.

I can understand a lot of these 1 star reviews I felt the same way after completing the expansion, the savage tier, the ultimates the extremes so far released. Endwalker was such a garbage ending to the Zodiark Hydealyn saga and it was set at a higher standard than most expansions because of how they did Shadowbringers. it's no different than a sequel to a video game like gears of war or any number of story based games like dead space etc.
Sequels need to add onto already good content and quite frankly Endwalker did the opposite it destroyed raiding and nullified the point of doing ultimate raids by making them so insanely hard people cheat to clear them, so if you actually do clear them legitimately then try to use the weapon glam or title or art in the adventure plate you just get told you're a cheater, it's frustrating after I spent months and get 5 clears of DSR and recently cleared TOP.
    complaint about story arc
Why did we need to prove ourselves to Hydaelyn in order to go and fight emo bird Meteion? we shouldn't have had to kill her period it was shit twist no one asked for and zodiark was considered her equal in power if not greater than her and we defeated him quite easily do to another random plot twist of Fandanial that again was a rando insert character with a really weak arc and then he dies like a lil bitch.
Shadowbringer was so stellar of a set up atmosphere and setting and pay off in comparison to how atrocious stormblood was on launch and on completion. shadowbringer answered a LOT of decade old questions while giving people that urge to wanna continue seeking the answer of many things, then endwalker literally dropped bird shit all over the entire story. We learned why Lahabrea was a dick we learned why Emet traveled with us and did what he did, it's explained painfully well and it's reasonable character development in shadowbringers.
Endwalker felt rushed and looked rushed who remembers the square grapes?
Sum up the story, Telepathic bird discovers life is pain and becomes psycho goth girl to cover up the fact she hates herself now meanwhile she can somehow end the entire star by being a goth girl no one asked for?
It's not even explained as to why she would destroy us other than "every other world did this because of suffering so I will destroy you before something else does." we had a cheeky dungeon explain this poorly.

EW isnt a 5 stars, HW and ShB are tho.. EW is all over the place and lacks coherence and logic, it should've been split into 2 expansions imo, one for Isabard (Garlemald and Thavnair) to give the empire a proper ending and have the WoL involved in the civil war and another for the end of times (space/time travel), still solid, 3,5/5

    • @plainsalt
      @plainsalt Před 11 měsíci

It has pacing issues 100% but I don't agree that it lacks logic and coherence. I'd agree on it being 2 expansions but when I think about that I feel like the Garlemald would easily end up feeling like Stormblood 2.0. Also some people already think that the Garlemald section in EW is "faschist sympathy" lol so I imagine that crowd wouldn't be happy, however i seeing that kind of action and possibly seeing a bit more of the ancient world would've been cool. Also Zenos should've 100% been dealt with sooner. Felt so sour that he has etched into the Endsinger fight but he's just a badly written character all around in my opinion. They did well in the end I'd say.
