It occurs to me this entire list could just be examples from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Yeah, I don't understand why the tried and true gameplay of hedgehogs murdering people with uzis was changed to focus on momentum and platforming. That's not the Sonic I'm familiar with.
What happened to all the guns, murder and weird love affairs with human girls? That's the Sonic I grew up with.

With the resurgence of Fallout, I went back and restarted Fallout Shelter. I drew three pets, all cats, and had to give a shout out to my peeps from across the pond. They're named Ashton Catthews (obviously),Tiny Peter Pawstin, and Ben Clawtter.

I absolutely loved THU2 and still consider it one of the most fun games I've ever bought. I remember if making me fall in love with skateboarding and forever looking for something similar in the next skating games that would eventually come out like the Skate series but never found something so similarly stupid and crazy

@@dvdbox360 The only similarity is that they're over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooters. RE5 is a lot brighter, more bombastic, and more action-packed than 4, which still threads the needle on action and horror, with some schlocky humor to balance the tone.
RE4 = Dawn of the Dead remake
RE5 = Predator 1
RE6 = Cloud Atlas
Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse. A series known for being a grim philosophical journey about humanity in a post-apocalyptic world where even your friends might stab you in the back for the sake of their ideals, being turned into a happy go lucky comedic adventure about the power of friendship overcomming evil against all odds. Oh, and a beach episode while they were at it. And the really baffling thing about it was that they kept the grim setting from the previous game. So some pretty severe tonal whiplash.
Another one would be Drakengard 2. Take the dark and twisted original and turn it into a generic action rpg. Good thing the director of the first game came back to steer the series back on track.
THUG2 was more of a step back than a full misstep….Ride and Shred on the other hand🤮
And considering the whole Jackass thing pretty much got noticed and became a thing because of skate videos it made sense to bring it into the games
Agreed - the tone was a disaster but the gameplay was still there
It’s one of the few reasons I can replay that and remix so many years later, the gameplay was still super solid(especially with classic mode)
Well, Metroid the Other M could also earn a place in this list.....somewhere

Bomberman Act Zero would have been a long forgotten and entirely ignored game that didn't hurt the series at all if it weren't for people saying hey remember this bad game that killed the Bomberman series?

Wolfenstein 2009 and Doom 3 spring to mind. Great games but totally misread the audience.
People are still saying MGSV's story was incomplete even after its been confirmed like a million times it was by now smh

Did they really make the claim that no major Sonic 3D title was seen as bad until 2006? Dude, Shadow the Hedgehog was RIGHT THERE. And people still debate about Sonic Heroes, so it was far from seen as universally good.
The vid is about tonal shift, not divisive mainline (Heroes) or spin off games (Shadow The Edge Hog) by developers that affected the franchise.

I love Resident Evil 5 and 6. Fight me.
I was really shocked and dismayed when Mortal Kombat announced that the series was going to focus on hyper-religious nonviolent gameplay. Kinda weird for a fighting game, but i wish Midway (i mean WB) the best of luck.
Also, Shadow the Hedgehog was weird when he wasn't packing heat of a sudden. It's just so weird when your hyper violent hedgehog murder simulator suddenly turns into a 3D platformer focusing on speed and movement and not shooting everyone. Weird tonal shift there.

Me - What?? When did this series stray so badly? Maybe Metal Gear Acid, but that's still the only deckbuilder I've ever enjoyed.

A lot of people really loved THUG and actually got into TH games from there. But generally not the same people as those of us who consider 2 and 3 the best of the series.
Fallout 4 and/or 76 or not?

Final Fantasy 13 anyone? I mean, I personally didn't like FF9 at first. But get that it was popular and in hindsight it's a good game. If nowhere near my favourite FF game.
FF12 took me the longest time to get into. But that's aged better than a lot of other games. And Fran is to this day my favourite FF playable character. (and this in a series that has Terra and Celes.)
But FF13? It took me about 5 false starts to even get 2 hours into the game. Though I have since knuckled down and finished it a few times. (I even have all cheevs on the Steam version.)
I usually agree wholeheartedly with you guys, but y'all were really reaching when you came for THUG2. Otherwise, solid video

I completely understand where people are coming from with Sonic 06 and having human characters that just don't go with that universe but people always seem to overlook or just forget altogether that the original Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast featured realistically proportioned humans too? Admittedly only in the hub world, but the were still there none the less.
They kinda explained that in Sonic X (season 2 was adaptation of Adventure etc) he’d been transported to Earth…it wasn’t some fantasy land where they all came from like ‘06
Of course I don’t think that was explained in the games but still…I don’t think it’s the proportions that people take issue with but the ‘interspecies relationship’….which is kinda funny because nobody cared when it was a squirrel…
That's not exactly a good comparison; The humans in SA1 were nameless, unimportant background characters rendered in a simplistic anime style that generally fit the aesthetic of the series. If you look at their eyes, you'll notice that they even have the same elongated pupils as the anthro characters.

@@joshoshea3194 They look fine enough, especially with how their stupidly low polygon counts leave their finer anatomical details up for interpretation.
Sonic 06 wanted to be a Mario 64 game with its hub world.
No Tomb Raider? The Angel of Darkness killed Core Design and came dangerously close to killing the franchise outright.
Thats not tonal shift. Its more of bad game design and execution.
I think Front Mission Evolved is much worse than Left Alive. I prefer Left Alive over Front Mission Evolved. Since Evolved's tone. Akin to quppy dialogue, overuse of explosions, and action over philosophical beliefs. Square is known for this like video games such as Chrono Trigger, Valkyrie Profile, Final Fantasy, and many more. Front Mission Evolved is not considered canon and does not belong to the entire Front Mission series. It should never be canon at all.

Resident Evil started to go downhill from the 4th one when started to go more action oriented.

THUG 2 is dated and aged like milk because of the Jackass style stuff being a fad? Maybe it seems that way to people who only liked skating games and didn’t pay attention to it other than those

THUG2 was fun af! PoP WW is hands down the best game in the franchise and the video's take is total bs, play the game ffs instead of parroting other people's opinions
I wasn't a big fan of the Jak & Daxter games after the first.
I wasn't a fan of the change from the Advance Wars games thru Dual Strike that they made in Days of Ruin.
Metroid Other M is another misstep.

1. That is not the definition of jumping the shark. Jump in the shark is always been not a shift in tone but a clear sign that a series is in serious decline. That’s it
2. I really don’t get people objecting to inter species romance in a sonic game. I mean raise your hand here if you’ve played the Mass Effect games and you didn’t engage in inter species romance? I’ve never played sonic 06, but judging by the cut scenes it looks like it was just handled badly. But it’s not inherently bad to have inter species romance, at least when we’re talking about species who are on roughly equal ground, mentally.
No way you're comparing an M rated science fiction RPG that has multiple branching paths to a franchise that is primarily aimed at a younger audience and has only one path you can go down. Mass Effect let you have interspecies relationships but still generally humanoid partners. You probably like Bee Movie too and think the husband was in the wrong on that movie.
Also this video isn't just pointing out things that change their tone lol. They are choosing the games that permanently left a stain on the franchise due to this tonal shift which had a negative effect down the road.

Sonic Team may think bestiality is ok with Edge Hogs, but the rest of the sane world frowns upon such practice and then teaching said practice to kid gamers.
