I always thought his drawings were just a result of him not spending that much time on them. He’s pretty good at some technical aspects of drawing like perspective but his drawings very much look like rough sketches more than finished artworks. I still think it fits with his character since he’s almost always portrayed as being a practical but not very open or expressive person.

I love the journal. It's a fantastic window into Arthur's psyche, and it contextualises how Arthur is studying the various plants and animals he encounters.
There's some other fun details in the journal as well. One of my favourites being in the missions with Angelo Bronte, Dutch and Bronte's henchmen address him as "Signor Bronte". But when Arthur writes about him in his journal, he writes it as "Señor Bronte".

@@venicec3310 Arthur is wayyyy more existential, he never did no book learnin’ but he’s actively trying to live a full life and enjoy the flowers. His family was taken from him so he does a lot of reflecting and mournful introspection. John still has a full plate in front of him, so he’s never pushed himself to understand anything more than what’s pragmatic to him

The way Arthur’s grave changes depending on honor haunts me. A weathered lonely “blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted” for low vs cared-for, flower adorned “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” for high. Great visualization of where each version of Arthur ends their journey and callback to John’s “blessed are the peacemakers”

Arthur was not worthy of either epitaph.
      Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
      1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
      Isaiah 64:6
We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
      Romans 3:19-23
19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it- 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
      Matthew 5:2-12
2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
------(James 4:6 ... “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”)
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
---(2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.)
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
---(Romans 12: 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.)
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
---(Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”)
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
--- (Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. James 2:13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.)
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
---(Hebrews 10:2 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.)
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
---(Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 10:13-15 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”)
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

My grandfather was born in 1899, and the rest were in the next decade. Two of them lived in Colorado, near places like "Valentine," another from Arkansas who would have traveled west through some of the areas depicted in the map such as "Rhodes." For me, this wasn't a video game. They mostly lived in cities, but it was a time machine to how things still were around them in their early days, in ways I could never imagine. It gave me insight into why they were in certain ways I didn't understand before. They all lived through an amazing transition into the 80s and early 90s. It's hard to believe the changes they experienced; from iron and steam power to aluminium and nuclear in no time. From cities of thousands to millions. From horses to interstates. From primitive Civil War era technology to computerized modern times (cell phones had even been sold by the time my last grandparent died). RDR2 connected me with my grandparents in ways they never could themselves. It's one of the most remarkable pieces of multi-media art combined with history teaching tools I've ever seen.
Coincidentally, Rockstar's LA Noire connected me with my mom's childhood Los Angeles, where she was born in 1940. I showed her that game which she says was incredibly accurate, enough so that she was able to direct me around the map to see certain things, including her West LA neighborhood. I suppose I owe Rockstar a big thank you for insight into my family's experience, or at least a little look into what the world around them was like.

California in that era was just dope. That was cowboy central with the sea.
I live in western Colorado so basically this game, and I’m sure this landscape and all is important to people who live in cities and stuff.
I never really got into it because it was slow paced. Saving it for when I have time ti enjoy it

    • @f1jones544
      @f1jones544 Před 2 měsíci +15

@@lindboknifeandtool my mom has a photo of my 1899 grandfather's Norwegian immigrant grandfather cooking food at a ranch where Los Angeles would be around 1870. Full on cowboy: suspenders, jeans, boots, hat, big knife. It's straight out of RDR2.
My other grandfather was native to Denver (where I am now too, full circle) so he's the one who'd have known the "Valentine" foothill towns in the Grizzlies. Speaking of west of the Divide, his sister and brother lived in Cedaredge.
I get what you mean about the slow pace. This connection I had with the game had me gripped the first time I played it and I couldn't put it down. Every time I've tried another playthrough it ends up being just for a visit, but I go back often.

It's a big insult that you ignored Team Bondi who made the game.
      Rockstar didn't make LA Noire.
Rockstar bankrupted Team Bondi which were forced to give game to them for franchise that will never exist in any future sequel.
GTA is making their houses full of money.
Every other game gave them much less.

Jakey made a video about the joy of watching other people play video games at one point and just recently had my girlfriend play through RDR2 and watching her get so immersed in the game and story and atmosphere was even more fun than when I played it.
Her actively crying when she lost her horse when Arthur and John run up the last mountain together, or the shocks of when characters she really loved died in the most insane ways was awesome.
Watching others experience and experiment with games is awesome and his perspective on it was one I think about all the time.

For all it’s faults, RDR2 will forever be my favourite game. I was at the lowest point of my life and planning on calling it a day, but I loved RDR1 and wanted to experience the new game first. I related to Arthur so much with how sad and angry he was at the world, but then I got to *that* scene… “take a gamble that love exists, and do a loving act”. I spent the rest of my playthrough redeeming Arthur, and come the end I was a different person. If it was possible for Arthur, why not me?

John introduces himself and says he read about the dude in arthurs journal, then they talk about arthur for a bit and then the normal mission starts. It's pretty cool

To each their own really. I found myself absolutely in love with Red Dead Redemption 2, especially near the end. At the start, it took me a while to hang up my GTA 5 Arcade-y style aiming and handling habits, and really get comfortable with the much slower, more cinematic handling and gun usage of RDR2. But as the story progressed, I almost started to ignore what I was doing in the missions because the story itself had hooked me. I wanted to know everything that was gonna happen, I listened to as much dialogue as I could, I ran to the next mission as soon as I could, it was almost like the game put me in a trance. The sheer stunning graphics actively made me stop, find a place that overlooked major chunks of the map, and just stare into this fake, but extremely real-like world. Specifically in the far mountains of the desert, I would stand there and look out on the massive land ahead of you, knowing full well I can explore all of it, seeing the towns and the occasional cowboy on his horse run by. The characters, even the ones who don't get much time before they die or leave, all feel very real and you quickly grow emotion for them. Obviously Arthur Morgan himself dying legitimately made me sad, Sean, Kieran, and especially Hosea and Lenny's passing's felt like your grandfather and your best friend just died.
The guns, while sluggish at first, quickly became one of my favourite parts of the game, being very fluid and quick to use, and the dead eye returning from the previous Red Dead games was the cherry on top to one of it's best accomplishments. I will admit, the wanted system was actively against me. The police would sometimes get angry at me for literally doing nothing wrong, then queue the 10 minute chase through the mountains, 15 dead cops and a $400 bounty in New Annesburg. However, all the other positives easily outweigh this issue, and as long as you stay careful you can avoid the annoying police. The honour system also partially was annoying, though even with all my shenanigans it never dropped into the low honour state, so either I'm too kind or you need to be one hell of a gunslinger to have low honour.
In the end, I continue to pour tens of hours into the game weekly, it's become one of my favourite games of all time (alongside GTA 5 and GTA 4), and replaying it recently gave me renewed hope that GTA 6 will be an instant, timeless classic when it releases late 2025. Rockstar may not be an honourable company, but you have to respect the dedication they pour into their games. When they care, they can practically change the entire industry with the release of a single videogame. Their attention to detail is unmatched, and they almost always exceed expectations.

The amount of subtle foreshadowing a poeticism with the camp interactions is so fun to take apart. Such an intricate game. Also love that i could zoom into decals with photo mode and actually read it. I loved the whole thing except for guarma. It genuinely felt like it didnt even happen. Also the whole revenge message was done so well. The fact that john is the reason the government intervined in rdr1 because he wanted revenge on micah and went up that mountain which in turn got the pinkertons on his trail flowed so well. Jakey, I discovered your channel back in 2018 when you released your first review video of RD2, and it’s a pretty beautiful thing to see you ‘coming home’ in a way to a subject that introduced me to your channel. It’s been an entertaining, hilarious, and joyful experience watching your channel evolve over the past six years, and I really hope that you continue to make very heartfelt videos and other art like this more in the future.
Btw- I also loved the hunting system in RD2. So much so that early in my second playthrough I hunted all of the necessary animals I needed to craft the perfect outfits that I wanted Arthur to wear at certain moments throughout the story to save & replay those moments whenever I liked. This game allows you to make it as cinematic of an experience as you want it to be. It very likely is Rockstar’s In Rainbows.

    Jakey,
I watched your initial Red Dead 2 video long before I ever ended up playing the game myself. Then finally last year, I started my first playthrough. And having watched your video, I think it gave me a decent insight into what to expect when playing, and probably ended up making my first playthrough somewhat better.
Fastforward to this year and I'm towards the end of my second playthrough, and not only have I been doing the same in taking in every detail possible, it has promoted it to without a doubt becoming my favorite game/story of all time. I don't think I exaggerate when I say that this second playthrough changed my life.
All this to say, watching you travel down the same path not only brought a smile to my face but tears to my eyes, as watching everything I've come to love be still held in such a high regard by the one who indirectly started me down this path.
    So thank you.

Dude I swear that game is like meditation for me. I'm the slowest RDR2 player when it comes to missions. Everytime I start up the game I just find myself exploring, hunting, talking with people, crafting gear and setting up camps at nice spots. Then I look at the time and it has been 2 hours and I haven't done a single mission. Which is fine tho because I then notice that I'm totally relaxed even after stressful days.

As someone who’s family has lived in New Orleans and it’s surrounding areas since 1699, I have to say that Saint Denis is literally a PERFECT recreation of that city in the late 19th century. It’s recreation of the French quarter especially is exquisite, down to specific monuments and buildings (e.g. Jackson square). Sometimes I reinstall the game just to walk around the city with a VR mod in first person because I want to experience seeing what my great great grandmother saw when she was little living there. At the end of the day I wish the city was a little more dynamic but I can’t fault it given the already huge size of the game. The bayous of lemoyne are also extremely accurate to the marshes of Louisiana and coastal Mississippi where I grew up. The flora and fauna especially are impressive, they didn’t just copy what it looks like today, they did their research on what it originally looked like before the state it’s in now (no overgrowth, no invasive species like kudzu all over the place etc.) the animals are all perfectly placed and accurate (except there are too many gators. Gators generally like to have more open space to themselves and in the late 19th century they were super endangered and would not be everywhere like they are in game). They even include extinct species of the region that were still alive at the time such as the Carolina parakeet (only parrot native to the USA) and the fabled ivory bill woodpecker (aka the “lord god bird” the holy grail for any serious birder and presumed extinct since 1944).
I work in the wilderness a lot cleaning up litter and stuff and do a lot of hiking and wildlife photography so I know those habitats like the back of my hand and can say with confidence that the ecology of the region is as perfect as a game could reasonably make it. It’s wonderful. I imagine people familiar with the Rocky Mountains and the open plains of the Midwest feel similarly about how they are portrayed in other parts of the map. You can tell the developers really wanted to capture the last of the open wilds of America. It’s so lovingly and meticulously done.

I don't quite remember if I heard the famous Rockstar mission design complained before that video or not, but it's definitely the first time I've seen it delved into in a deeper way and well-formulated my thoughts on it. And made me aware of how it even seeps into the open-world content in their recent games. It's the reason why a notable tweaking of their mission structure is one of my biggest wishes for GTA VI and all their future titles.

    • @FelipedPaulaSantos
      @FelipedPaulaSantos Před 2 měsíci +1

@@themadtitan7603Like Jake said in his previous video, it's pretty damn hard to merge a Lego-sandbox-style gameplay with Uncharted, and that's why Rockstar doesnt even try to do it. They keep those styles completely separated.
I highly doubt they're going to change that for GTA VI. Financially speaking it's not worth it.

    • @themadtitan7603
      @themadtitan7603 Před 2 měsíci

@@FelipedPaulaSantos To be clear, I'm not expecting nor hoping for some Hitman-eque open level structure to be adopted in GTA VI nor any of their future titles - unless they take a crack at a new IP one day that has several core differences from the established "formula".
I won't even bet on getting something that's like GTA III's mission design. I just see a scenario where they can break away from the hand-holdy objective system that has gotten exacerbated in their most recent titles, in my and others' opinion.
A GTA VI where potentially, you don't fail a mission because you didn't park a wagon/car or plant bait in the specific square area they want you to (which makes complete no-mini map playthroughs nigh impossible) and doubles down on some of the freedom of approach they mingled with in RDR2. Where they allowed players to choose e.g; what time and how they'd rob a household in 'The Spines of America'. And maybe, more open side quests, activities and events since they aren't as narratively driven.

    • @FelipedPaulaSantos
      @FelipedPaulaSantos Před 2 měsíci

@@themadtitan7603 I get you, but to be honest, I dont think GTA VI's missions will be any different than RDR2. Simply because Rockstar has no reason to change. The game will likely score high 95s, sell billions and be popular for a decade even with those super rigid, story-heavy, mass-pleasing "missions".
And just to clarify, I would also love to see missions designed a bit more creatively. But oh well.

Seeing your Video in my feed actually made me revisit RDR2 and finally finish it, after abandoning it at the start of Act 6 (I didn't know I was actually so close to the end). The main reason was to not ruin the ending or any other surprises the game had to offer, cuz I was gonna finish it... someday...eventually. So after a good 2 years of not touching RDR2 something clicked for me. I initially ran through the main story missions like I'd do in a GTA for example, not realising I robbed myselfe from so many side missions/interactions and ultimately the fun and immersion this game has to offer. Slowing down, noticing the insane amount of details on display and just vibing through the game made me see this game in a whole new light. I expected a fancy RDR1 with horse balls and missed the entire point for 85% of my first playthrough.
