    It's the Hilux of RC planes. I bought a couple of the XUAV versions several years back and I still fly the first one regularly, long range FPV.
    It does everything well, has great efficiency (Sunnysky 2212/1400kV - 7x6) and thermals well. Even fully loaded it does 10:1 glide ratio in still air.
    Some people bag them for their docile manner, but the reality is, they just don't try to kill themselves like sportier planes, for FPV why would you want
    something worse or more prone to tip stalling?
    Good to see someone is keeping them available anyway. I might have to grab another ... spare.
    Cheers.

    For those interested there's a range of x8 on aliexpress . Some have different cabin covers. Most of the shorter style. This long style cabin is the rare one there but can be found. It's slightly more expensive

    Great build/assembly montage (from 5:48).
    With a couple 9-gram cameras, you might even be able to mount both onboard at same time without worries. It could make for some additional editing possibilities.

    I've always thought this style plane is a good choice for newbies. The only issue is that many are a challenge to launch since the motor thrust cannot be aligned the the longitudinal drag axis. A great many of them tend to launch into the ground in the hands of a newbie. With proper balance and trim, launch can be simple and reliable, but a learner may have trouble getting there before re-kitting the plane. Curious if this one is any different.

    Andrew:
    This was your usual expert videography, with very pleasant background music, and what I perceive is a new text- supplemented still frame photo presentation that very succinctly & clearly illustrates assembly. Top marks for these! Can't wait for your sloping video on this model.
    I'm curious if you have had enough practice with the Express LRS Tx/Rx systems to offer some tricks to most effectively use this equipment, especially the EPW5 from HappyModel.
    I'm perplexed about how to best use ch5 to select flight controller modes, either with a 3 position switch or perhaps a slider set up for 5 modes on that one potentiometer.
    Is this a challenge that you would enjoy?
    Jim

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  Před rokem

      Ch 5 is fixed as two position, even with a slider. Cant change that behavior. It's intended as the arm channel.

    made by - who knows?
    I guess you might know it first cause you had them in hand, but I guess it is their usual game of giving a contract to a tiny manufacturer to make the next iteration of the Skysurfer but unfortunatelly they do not learn that much from the previous model someone else has made for them before.
    It is the usual game of fire and forget, cause once you ask Banggood for spareparts of these products you end up in a silence or a kind of sour sweet deal offer to get a new one with a small discount.
    At least 2:07 sounds like a strong magnet when you closed the canopee.
    The externally mounted motor will also increase the performance a lot cause #1 the motor will be a lot better cooled and the prop is not hidden by the foam.
    5:57 when will they finally get rid of all these plastic bags, which at the end is quite expensive oil? The bags bring no benefit - if there is a shipping damage then the wing will be damaged the same was regardless if they are in a bag or not. Strange luxury not needed.
    Have you moved forward to the LiIon 18650 cells instead LiPo you had been using before. Have you done a video about this topic and your experience ?
    I am still a bit hesitant and if I guess I would go for my own built to make sure I get the best cell like those high C rated e bike Cells from Samsung.
    The Phoenix Volantex was the best one I guess considering its molded nice fuselage instead of a delicate and breakable foam one (especially the nose) and also the wing connection with clips insted of screws. I had thought you had still the Ranger 1600 in your hangar at least before you moved out.
    I like these pushers a lot too, very versatile especially for fpv platform and affordable, at least the ranger cause for the ranger you can get spare parts and find lot of thingiverse 3D prints and build hacks. Unfortunatelly the price has gone up a lot.

  • @batmojuice5704
    @batmojuice5704 Před rokem

    I bought this one. Good plane for the price. Some issues: tail push rods can get springy/mushy which affects control, despite being a good glider airframe, plane can stall, with heavy weight it tends to get damaged in a crash, nose and thin tail boom will break in a crash, prop seems a little small, so it can’t pull you out of trouble when you need it. It was a great learning experience, but in the end this was the only plane that I ever had that ended up getting scrapped due to me getting weary of repairs. I’m sure you will have better luck 🍀

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Sometimes hot glue is the only one that sticks. UHU Por is contact cement so it can't be moved once brought together. Foam glue might be the best all round for foam models but they all have their good points.

    Had one of the originals and it was a piece of junk..........wing tubes had been installed crooked and would not allow wings to join so major surgery to fix that........ one servo was dead........... and the motor had bad internal connections (would only stutter when powered....2 phasing I believe they call it ) in which I had to pull the motor apart and repair. All in all and extra couple of days before it was able to be flown. Contacted Banggood at the time and they would not do anything to rectify, replace or any compensation what-so-ever. Provided photos of the problems and a short video which did no good either.

  • @jeffbluejets2626
    @jeffbluejets2626 Před 3 měsíci

    I had to cut the guts out of each wing and relocate the spar tubes as they were installed wayyyyy out of alignment......took ages to fix....then motor had a bad connection which caused the motor to oscillate violently back and forth instead of rotating....so had to cut the guts out of that to get access to the motor to repair it....again took ages to fix.....finally I thought all done but ...nooo...one servo was dead....contacted them and reply was basically tough titty.....never buy there again.
