  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after the Dali container ship struck a support column early Tuesday. The crash appeared to be accidental, not intentional, officials said.
    ABC News analyzed the Baltimore harbor livestream footage minute-by-minute, pieced together official radio communications, and sourced statements from authorities to assess a timeline of events leading to the near-total collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

      There have been multiple reports about the six missing workers. My understanding private company hired by MDOT to repair pot holes on the bridge. They were all immigrants from Honduras and Guatemala. Primarily Spanish speaking. Most likely not monitoring shipping or emergency channels. Less than 2 minutes from "mayday " call to impact. Doesn't look like any LEO could have driven the distance to warn them and get back off the bridge

    Interesting that the bridges in San Francisco Bay are all protected by fenders, and FSK bridge was not. When the FSK bridge is rebuilt, they should be required design features. The SF Bay Bridge was also hit by a cargo ship - and the fenders did what they were supposed to do. Also, having the tug boats escort the ships all the way out beyond bridge structures is a good low-tech way to keep something like this from happening again. Use 4 tugs instead of 2.
    As to the Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, he hasn't displayed the job skills necessary to perform well in this capacity. And to be fair, his prior job was mayor of South Bend. President Biden should replace him - maybe shift PB over to Health and Human Services or Office of General Services. While the the fender design was done right at the SF Bay Bridge, the entire project went 4 times over budget and suffered from immediate defects owing to poor government management. It also took 25 years. The original bridge was built in 4. Someone more competent needs to be at the helm for the FSK bridge project.

    Highway bridge collapses seem to have become more frequent in recent years, which really shows how car dependence is killing us. Highway failures like this one are exactly why we need to build more public transport, walkable neighbourhoods, and cycling infrastructure. Good cities are designed so that driving is not the only viable option to go anywhere. This highway collapse is the perfect opportunity to increase and improve MARC regional rail service. It's time we provide better alternative transport options to driving.
    Also, notice the news media bias! If this was a passenger rail bright that collapsed, the news media would either be silent or have no sympathy, and all rail service would be suspended indefinitely while repairs are uncertain. However, a highway collapses and everyone freaks out and demands answers, then the state and federal governments order a multi-billion dollar aid package to repair the highway immediately. So unfair how Americans hate all transport methods other than driving. Car culture needs to stop.

      Define "trucking"?? The speed of travel was within port requirements. You simply cannot stop the forward momentum of this much mass in 2/3 of a mile. Experts are saying it would take up to 3 miles to come to full stop WITH full control of the ship

      @user-qs4yi9lb3i Před 2 měsíci +2

      Correct. They were up to speed allowed for the channel when they suddenly lost power including steering. They did drop an anchor. It is also speculated the plume of black smoke was an engine coming back on line and the attempt to put it in reverse. Check out the video from yesterday at what's going on with shipping channel. This maritime expert shows the real time tracking data from the port including time stamps and speed as well as when the tugs disengaged and anchor was dropped. He overlays it with the video. They lost power 2/3 of a mile from the bridge. I'm a visual learner and this 10 minute video was remarkable

      @sorcierx2604 Před 2 měsíci +3

      there's no explosions, seriously, have you ever seen a firecracker go off? those make more " explosions " than are showed in this entire clip. There's a light at the top of the bridge ( so planes don't hit it. ) camera angle makes it a little funny I get it, the bridge starts twisting before you see the light, the lights on the left side are the flashing lights you normally see on bridges but you're probably not paying enough attention to remember. This was a 95,000 ton ship, it hit 1 of the most needed lower support structures, there was no way the the upper supports were going to hold this bridge w/o the lower support.

This maritime expert shows the actual tracking data from the port. He overlays it with the video from the port CCTV livestream. Pretty strong proof of accident. It would involve a significant amount of people to conspire to prove intentiality. I'm not a maritime expert but I do have a high level of critical thinking skills and ability to find sources of expertise and data to make informed judgment. I see a crew fighting with what available resources they had with a 100,000 ton ship to correct the issue. Unfortunately the mass x velocity created a force that was catastrophic
